Scared to Death (also known as The Aberdeen Experiment and Scared to Death: Syngenor) is a 1980 American science fiction horror film directed by William Malone and starring John Stinson
A monster stalks Los Angeles as a Bio-Engineered creature called a Syngenor (which stands for SYNthesized GENetic ORganism) takes refuge in the city's sewer system and then hits the streets at night in search of human spinal fluid. The only person who stands in the way of the creature's unstoppable killing spree is Ted Londergan, a former detective turned Private Investigator. When he is offered a job to look at the case by his former partner, several people on the police force doubt he can help solve it, as he is regarded by many to be a hotshot who has a loose temper. As time goes by, however, and the body count begins to mount, Ted is eventually brought in on the case.
Syngenor (also known as Scared To Death 2) is a 1990 B horror/science fiction film that was a sequel to the 1980 film Scared to Death. The film was directed by George Elanjian Jr and written by Michael Carmody and Brent V. Friedman. It features David Gale and Kathryn Noble.
Norton Cyberdyne provides high-tech military technology and their latest super weapon is "Syngenor" (SYNthesized GENetic ORganism). A prototype breaks loose and starts leaving a trail of bodies. As bodies pile up other Syngenors emerge from the basement and a battle rages between the monsters and the corporate humans.

Hello hello, I'm here to nerd out about the David Gale fun facts.
In the commentary for Syngenor, a member of the crew talks about how on set, David came up with a backstory for Carter Brown which really informs his behavior in the movie. David's story goes that Carter was abused by his aunt, giving him a complicated relationship with women (he's so easily manipulated by Paula, and there's all that "hold me, hold me" stuff-- I guess he lacks a good female role in his life, despite calling his mother midway through the film). "David kept coming to me having new ideas about the character, and he really wanted all of this to be about his mother. So a lot of the lines were crafted right there on the set, between takes, to define those little angles and moments... everything would be about his relationship with his mother and aunt who beat him."
In terms of what the reagent substance is, it was intentionally left ambiguous. David's idea, though, was that the substance was something Carter commissioned from Norton Cyberdine to help with "some sort of neurological issue". Friends of mine have wondered if maybe Carter was schizophrenic, the crew member who spoke to this in the commentary remarks he "thinks it acts like some sort of sedative".
All of this comes to a head when Carter starts with the weird party lingo and such, implying that he's living out some violent birthday party nightmare inspired by his trauma as a child. A lot of his behavior, honestly, implies that Carter's sometimes kind of stunted, and regresses back to a childlike, vulnerable state of mind when he breaks down.
I know this is definitely looking into it too much, but these little things make Syngenor much more interesting for me, and probably would have been interesting if they were outright put into the film. David often did this with the roles he was given, and in a magazine interview even gives his own take on Dr. Hill's backstory from Re-Animator, and apparently also pitched an alternate opening for Bride of Re-Animator as well, which involved Hill stitching himself back together in an easy chair, getting ready to take revenge.
David always dreamt of becoming a writer/director and doing his own projects, and collaborated with Brent Friedman, Syngenor's writer, on his own screenplay called "Hydra" that David would also star in, but unfortunately he passed before it could get made. If I remember correctly, it was going to be about a detective who was exposed to so many traumatic situations that he would eventually go insane. Friedman also went on to cast him as the heavy in Ticks, but he passed before he could fulfill that as well. Apparently Gale and Friedman had a pretty good relationship, and did a lot of getting to know eachother while shooting Syngenor.
Rant over! Great video, guys!
Just have to give props to the halloween short. Joe as Lumis was hilarious. I choked with laughter when Joe shot michael "6" times 😂🤣😂.
I think the guy from Scared To Death looks like the reformed criminal in The Usual Suspects...
She's only 17!🕺💃what is that whitesnake? My bad it's Winger..the nerdy kid from Beavis and Butthead reps the Winger shirt lol
Damn, all of these years I always thought these were the same movie with different titles! Crazy. Remember seeing the mask in Fangoria magazine ads back in the day. Always loved it. Good job, guys!
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
There's a "mutant baby" movie you guys forgot; "It's Alive!" I believe there was 3 movies in the series.
Weirdly enough, when I said "The Unborn", I actually was thinking of "It's Alive!" 🤣 -Sean
@@MovieDumpster LOL!
Yup. Island of the Alive was the third one. Has a VERY tense courtroom scene at the beginning, but then becomes a standard 80s/90s B horror film sadly.
Don't forget Slugs lol they were most likely in that sewer too! Lol..
The Halloween in 5 minutes was great! I think Joe's Dr. Lumis was the best part, with Mr. Lobo being a close 2nd
Two great movies for the low low price of one monster effects artist :):):)
A double feature episode was a really cool idea.
This is a hard one for me guys. If I put these movies in the dumpster, they would go right on top. But the problem lies there. If I go to open the dumpster later on to put something in and see these movies on top...Id pull them out and put them on the shelf to watch later. When the time comes to watch it, I would ask myself, why the hell was this on the shelf and put it back on top of the dumpster AND REPEAT!
One of my parents' video stores had Syngenor!
I loved the double feature! Occasionally doing these for movies that have a big connection would be great. Also, can't wait to watch Syngenor now.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙏💚📼
Have you guys ever covered Student Bodies? That's such a great comedy slasher that doesn't get enough praise
Not yet! I was just talking about that the other day. I love that flick and would love to cover it. -Joe
I LOVE THAT MOVIE; so underrated! Pandemonium is a good one too.
Been awhile but I remember a funny scene in Student Bodies, when this old suit and tie guy breaks the 4th wall and says something like, "In order to achieve an R rating, the film you are watching has to contain: nudity, violence and foul language. Since studies have shown R rated movies to be very popular with movie going public. The producers have asked me to take the oppurinty to say, "Fuck you." 👍🤣
@@RoyceLovesHisShotgun I remember that scene too, as well as the killer calling a female victim on the phone, and can't say anything except boobs over and over lol
Met the dude who wore the suit of the monster in this movie yesterday at a convention I attended. He makes comics now and is a very cool dude
can't wait to see what this one is all about lol
As a patron, this is great, it required me finding both movies before and delivered like five hours of entertainment. Thanks guys!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the support!! 🙏💚📼
Sacred to Death was released on DVD by RetroMedia years ago. It is the copy that I own. It has a William Malone interview as the special feature, where he tells the Rick Springfield story
Did it really? Can’t believe I missed it. Thanks for the heads up! -Joe
@@MovieDumpster no worries. The cover of that DVD release is the bright neon green image of Syngenor that you guys used in the video thumbnail
Started watching/listening to your show back in the summer with the super fucking awesome Predator 2 episode. Hoping you get around to covering the movie 'Route 666' with Lou Diamond & Phillips, Lori Petty and Steven Williams. It's one of my all time favorites!...
Can't wait to see what this is about! I always love watching your content! I make it a point to watch your reviews with uncle tony on hack the movies, plus the Halloween episodes of both hack the movies and talking about tapes. Also Cinemassacre's Monster Madness, and nostalgia critic's nostalgiaween reviews!!
Thank you so much! Glad you’re enjoying the show! 🙏💚📼
THAT FIRST MOVIE WAS RUFF,RUFF!!!!!!!!!!
GOOD COMPARISON ON EVIL DEAD AND EVIL DEAD 2.
This movie sounds ace!
Watch both this flims for the frist snd back to back a few nights a go hade a blast i ilke syngenor more than scared to death that monster mask looks great
Omg this is the movie that traumatized me as a kid. For years I thought I just made it up. For some reason when I was a kid I thought it was a snake coming out of its mouth and despite all my searching I could not find the movie. Now I have to go back and watch it as an adult. Thank you movie dumpster!!!
We hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
Aliens hurt by water, I thought that sounded ridiculous in Signs
Well, they were grown in a lab so they aren’t aliens. However, building in the water handicap sounds like a terrible idea. I’m thinking it was Valentine’s “fuck you” to the company before he split. -Joe
Great video did like you guys covering 2 movies in one video also would love to see you guys cover The Burning one of my favorite slasher movies a very great movie
The Burning is one of my favs! -Joe
Great review guys!
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
I've seen maybe 4 or 5 of the movies you guys have reviewed but have watched every episode you guys posted on RUclips some even multiple times I think my favorite episode is probably one of the fighter episodes since I love fighting games I'm gonna say double dragon just cause it's stupid and totally 80s/90s shit
Great episode I'd never heard of these I'll have to check em out!! Also speaking of Vinegar Syndrome, you boys getting that sweet Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 4k Blu ray??
You know it!
Coincidence Sean I watched these back-to-back today on RUclips LoL. I remember seeing Syngenor at FYE all the time and its advertisement for David Gale. Thank you for introducing me to Scared to Death and I kinda enjoyed it. I never would have known about it. I always thought Syngenor was a one & done movie. Good point about Evil Dead 1&2 but even Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1&2. Great episode!
Thanks for all of your support! 🙏💚📼
The spinal fluid sucking reminds me of the Bloodlines comics DC did in the 90’s. They tried to make their own version on mutants since X-Men was kicking ass at the time. Creatures sucked peoples’ fluid and gave them super powers. It failed hard. Hitman was the only successful series that came from it.
Great reviews. Subbed ya.
Thank you!
Forgot all about Wild and Crazy Kids... Also you guys should totally do Amityville Dollhouse!¡!
What the heck these masks were everywhere back in the late 89s/90s and I thought everyone knew about Syngenor and I did not know my first purchased vhs of Scared To Death from a Suncoast for 9.99 is finally on blu! I need to find this mask they are so Scarce!
Wizard of oz...the OG turf war lol
Is God in showbusiness too?
Y’all should do a review where you go the beat by beat review style you have been doing - but how each of your favourite looney tunes character(s) would fair in each scene and how
I finally watched all the reanimators back to back haha that's that guy...lol where the main character basicly tells him he don't know shit and he stole his predecessors shit...great stuff. Love tubi..most everything I've watched has been great some meh but...
BLEEDERS you guys need to add them to your collection of underground and sewer dwellers. I remember renting it as a kid because the gimmick box cover that had "blood" you could squish around the cover.
We did an episode on BLEEDERS-that’s the origin of Granny Van Daam! I also have that very VHS, haha. It’s a solid flick. -Joe
Hmm the monster design reminds me a little of the Species alien
Well, Bill Malone was inspired by H.R. Giger who designed Sil from Species!
Hell Yeah for the One Piece reference!
Ummmm excuse me Joe it's actually pupa not pupil! Harumph! Lol I'm just busting your balls. Love you guys!
I just recently watched a movie that resembles something yall reviewed...where a prisoner basicly becomes electricity or some shit..I gotta find it. 1 sec. It was the Horror Show with Lance Henrickson and Brion uhh something..the dude who always Has a goatee 5th element and a million other things. I dunno if he did the laugh in the movie but it's great at first, then gets old fast 'cuz they use the shit out of it...heeheeeheehee. the one you guys reviewed had the guy from X-files..he's like they boss in the beginning. I just thought they were basicly the same movie..that's all..
Yea, dude! That’s the Horror Show aka House 3! -Joe
@@MovieDumpster oh, what?! I watched the first one, I believe..have to revisit..
Ten years prior sounds like a helluva Crack binge. Lord I shouldn't a said that I apologize...RIP.. Richard Prior lol
Please do cigarette burns from masters of horror
Classic shizzz my guys
Idk how recently the episode was but I remember joe referencing big money hustlas in a episode any chance for a episode similar to this episode with big money hustlas and big money rustlas?
I think it was on the Petey Wheatstraw episode. Nothing’s impossible! -Joe
@@MovieDumpster if it helps both are on RUclips in full dvd format :ppp
NECRID FROM SOULCALIBER 2
Can definitely see it in the face!
How about do a review on its alive from 1974 and it's 2 sequals
They are on the list, haha.
How is Evil Dead 2 basically the same movie as Evil Dead 1? Beyond being at the cabin, they have 2 totally different events.
In terms that it’s like a remake of the first film with a higher budget. -Joe
@@MovieDumpster but it's not a remake. It just has a recap since most at the time never saw the first. The movie literally starts where the first one ended.
I think you might be confusing the intro of Army of Darkness with the intro of Evil Dead 2. ED2 recaps the history of the book, Ash has seemingly never been to the cabin before and voluntarily plays the Knoby tape and releases the evil.
It’s my favorite of the franchise, but it’s basically a remake with AoD being its direct sequel. -Joe
Yo Movie Dumpster! VinSyn has 'Creature' for $10 today.. Scoop up an extra copy for a loved-one!!
Crazy good deal!
Did Stan find out that you and Snot have a youtube show?
.44 AUTOMAG
He got it from Dirty Harry, not Barry Burton then!
@@MovieDumpster Needs Paul Kersey's 475 Wildey Magnum for this beast!
While watching Syngenor, I was like ,where do I know that weasley business man from? That Charles Lucia guy played this jerk politician on TNG that mentally emptied his repressed stress and anger onto people and killed them. Knows how to play a good jerk, or butt head maybe?
TGRI
TCRI in the comics 😉 -Joe
These old direct-to-video sci-fi/horror movies are so derivative. Syngenor is a shameless ripoff of Aliens and Robocop.
I remember first seeing Syngenor as a young boy back in 1994 on the Sci-Fi Channel. They showed a lot of these type of movies in the 90s. As bad and derivative as they were, they are still leagues better than the C(rap)GI monster-of-the-week assembly line movies (mostly from the Asylum) the later rebranded SyFy Channel would churn out in the 00s onward.
I think a Masters of horror minisode series would be epic!
Also wouldn't mind a minisode of Fear Dot Com because I actually really enjoy that movie. It's stupid but creepy. Definitely one I revisit randomly every couple of years.
Great video!
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
@@MovieDumpster always! You guys are the best! Also, now that I think of it, Fear Dot Com would actually fit within the MDU considering the cast.
🤘😈
Joe is too cool for school🫡
I’m just a dude who loves b-movies. -Joe
It's the backwards cap.
