That's the point this video has overlooked. The technological disparity means that even if the weapon systems might normally be inferior, the sheer advances in tech means it doesn't even matter. Stormtrooper armor is entirely invulnerable to even 50 cal weapons. You could have rifleman shooting at the stormtroopers and, unless they hit the joints, they're doing zero to that stormtrooper. The same applies to every level of the imperial military save maybe tie fighters.
Imagine fighting an enemy where their soldiers can just leisurely walk towards your squad, tanking every bullet you put down range where a single blaster bolt kills you. Imagine fighting a walker that shrugs off every tank round, artillery shell, and missile thrown at it and just effortlessly one-shots your tanks with a single blaster cannon bolt.
There's a reason you never see projectile weapons used in SW and it's because they're so out-dated that even the most advanced projectile weapon is nigh worthless against armored soldiers.

I grant you that Canon Star Wars is laughably stupid in how underdeveloped Imperial technology is. Take literally any ship from Legends though, and it's a whole other story. Do you know the primary reason ships fight so close in Star Wars? A lot of people like to say it's because turbolasers have very short range, but they forget a very crucial detail. The reason turbolasers cannot fire at great distances is never specified. They always say "we're out of range" or "we're out of effective range", not "our turbolasers won't effect them at this range" or something similar. So, if we want the actual reason turbolasers aren't useful at long range, we have to look at the Legends Canon reason why battles are so close. It's because the energy shields of capital ships produce a sensor fog that jams tracking, transmissions, and other ECM capabilities of enemy ships due to how the energy field is structured. Due to this, the long range targeting software that gunners use to target ships is unable to get a lock on enemy ships. So, to counteract the lack of sensor capability, ships have to fight in visual range in order to actually have something they can hit. They can't use their FTL sensors to hit things that aren't within visual range due to the jamming, so instead they're forced to use visual targeting which can only work up close. That's why turbolasers are ineffective at long range, because the automatic effect if how energy shields in Star Wars works prohibit any kind of electronic warfare and sensor targeting. Against anything we have, however, they have no such restrictions. So they're free to shoot at us from orbit or wherever.

The biggest issue with the infantry section is that you’re forgetting the entire Imperial Army. The Stormtrooper Corp is technically a part of the Imperial Navy, but functions much like modern marines, being deployed planetside. The Imperial Army is, well, the army, and consists of different units and divisions, such as an Engineering Corps, Army Air Corps, Assault Armor Division, Artillery Corps, etc. The Army is better suited for ground operations than the Stormtrooper Corps, so I don’t know why they would be doing anything much more than policing and holding captured areas.
Also it’s worth mentioning that earth can only make so much ammunition, and faced against a galactic force it will eventually run out of resources without outside help.
If the empire wanted to take earth they would likely hit key targets from orbit, like radar stations, air defence grids, naval bases, etc. then jam all communications. Then they’d take over the Middle East which produces almost all the world’s oil, and would offer much less resistance than a large nation with a massive modern military like the US or China. Then it’s just a matter of whittling down the other countries with its galaxy amount of reserve troops.
If the Rebel Alliance doesn’t come in to help earth, or at least take advantage of the Empire’s situation to hit key targets to take pressure off earth, then earth will either run out of resources and be taken over without a real military threat or be carpet bombed when the Empire decides we aren’t worth a years-long campaign.

Agreed. I think the Empire would just fly a small fleet, including a couple of Star Destroyers, into orbit then proceed to annihilate a major city in a couple of minutes. The they might take out a few pieces of key infrastructure (like our satellite networks -which would be easy pickings for TIE fighters), and give the people of Earth an ultimatum. My guess is that the reason that space battles happen at such close range in Star Wars is that countermeasures are employed that make fighting at close range necessary. All the Empire would need to do, to greatly diminish our war fighting capabilities, would be destroy all of the artificial satellites around the Earth. My guess is TIE pilots would make quick work of those.

It never occurred to the Empire to make armor that withstood clubs and rocks, or walkers that would have to deal with getting smashed by logs. If that's the case, we might actually do pretty okay against them in a ground invasion, however my suspicion is that we'd surrender long before that became a problem. The empire doesn't *have* to invade. They have but to sit up there in their nice, safe, city-sized ships and say, "Surrender now please, we have you surrounded," and if we had any sense that's exactly what we'd do, lest they melt the whole planet down to the fossil record.

      - Japan being able to copy the drill from European countries
      - The US allowing exiled German Scientists to work on Nuclear weapons during ww2

One thing that I always come back to about being technologically advanced is that you might not be advanced in what matters. Look at TIE Strikers for example. It's just so odd. Here you have a plane with laser weapons, shielding, and ion engines.
Yet it's still technologically inferior to something such as a MiG-21 or Dassualt AlphaJet. Even a B-57B. An A-10 Warthog, an outdated plane not even meant for air-to-air combat, would still smack it because the technology gap is surreal.

Knowing a bit of star wars lore the largest battle the empire took part in was over the forest moon of Endor. The imperial fleet had a grand total of, 35 star destroyers a super star destroyer and the death star. The empire was so overstretched that they couldn't spare to send too many more without the rebellion noticing or occupied worlds starting uprisings. For our world in our level of technology compared to theirs, even getting 2 star destroyers over our world would be excessive. Most likely some old flotilla of no more than 1 Venator with smaller support ships would stumble here. And they have weaker shields and less weapons than a victory or imperial 1 or 2 star destroyer.

@@Brother_O4TS My theories on why technology in the Star Wars universe is "stagnating" are from points of view from inverse and real life. George Lucas wanted the Star Wars universe to look and feel like a futuristic WWII/Vietnam battleground. Have you seen the movie, "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow"? That's a weird movie from the perspective of how sci-fi/fantasy was envisioned from the 1930's of the future. In the real ever-expanding technology of Earth, close-quarter combat of aircraft is almost non-existent. Targets are hit with missiles hundreds of miles away without eye-contact. I think Lucas wanted Star Wars to have a particular feel of close-quarter combat which is awesome. Now onto why it appears technology in Star Wars is stagnating... I view the Star Wars "Universe" in the light of the God/Source/Force expansion of an earlier incarnation of time and space that is more limited than the Universe that includes Earth. "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." implies to me that certain technological achievements are not able to be "unlocked". What would take thousands of years for some worlds to evolve into a "modern" technological era only took Earth 300 years. My view is a mix of evolutionary/philosophical/technological reasons why we see a "stagnated" technology. Think about it, the Death Star was the biggest technological device ever constructed in the galaxy and it was only the size of a small moon, but hyperspace technology has been around for thousands of years connecting thousands of star systems with access to the latest technologies. From how Earth is progressing from the last 300 years alone, we will be beyond that Star Wars technology 300 years from now. Our current incarnation has more "unlocked" features in every aspect. That's just my views of it all.

  • @MaitlandJones
    @MaitlandJones 4 года назад +348

A few points. Blasters have no stealth, which is likely why the Empire had forsaken camo. No use wasting credits that could go towards building the Death Star. I think a more interesting fight would be earth vs the Galactic Republic. Clone troopers are FAR more disciplined than storm troopers, and their weapons and gear are much higher quality. The Republic put more focus on Quality than quantity. That boils down to context though. The Republic was fighting a major galaxy spanning war, the Empire on the other hand already controlled the galaxy.
So the Empire's shock and awe doctrine is better designed to keeping down an already pacified civilian populace. All while keeping the gear cheap, if the Empire loses a bucket head, pull in the next schmuck and equip him with more cheap gear. Anything past rioting civilians and disgruntled nerf herders with their varmint shooters, the Empire has it's logistical network spanning the galaxy, plenty of bodies to throw at a problem. We can start to see why they eventually lost out to the Rebels, who where they could, invested in higher quality gear and starfighters.
Whether the Empire could win a war against earth depends on how much resources they could dedicate towards the invasion. But even in a "Victory" scenario, there would still be a guerrilla war going on all throughout the occupation, and would likely mirror their failures on Lothal. Cases in real wars show that a dedicated guerrilla army can match a technologically superior army. (See Vietnam and various Middle Eastern conflicts.)
Ultimately, if I were tasked with occupying Earth, I would try to take the planet through diplomacy and propaganda. I would offer individual nations membership into the Empire with a simple deal, run things as you like, pay Imperial taxes, get Imperial technology. Those nations would be propped up by that technology against their neighbors in the event that the neighbors become hostile. But good chance they will sign on too to avoid being left behind by the countries that joined the Empire. What's more, I could directly recruit new soldiers from Earth very easily, many would jump at the chance to leave to explore the galaxy. Without even taking the planet I could provide the Empire with the Earth's superior military personnel.
Just imagine how much they Empire could benefit from hiring a veteran from the Iraq war working as an adviser on how to put down some local insurrection on a distant alien planet.
If it really came down to an actual conflict though, why should I waste a single drop of Imperial blood? To fight a Terran, you send a Terran. Either, your allies win, or if they ultimately lose, Earth will have spent much blood and treasure to have ousted them. At this point, they should be battered, weak, and war weary. Invade, hopefully with a force that has learned a thing or two from Terran military doctrine or perhaps composed of Terrans loyal to the Empire. Reinstall Empire friendly leadership, and leave a garrison composed of Terrans, with Imperial overseers. Rinse and repeat the process, always have Terrans do the fighting for you, waste naught, want naught.
Start mining and build shipyards on Mars. I don't necessarily need full political control of Earth to exploit the star system's resources to feed the Imperial war machine.

    1) AT-ST can reach 90km/h on flat terrain and similar speeds in terrains most Earth vehicles couldn´t reach. They´re not that well armored, but their mobility could be important. AT-AT is still good only for parades though.
    2) Stormtrooper armor is made to withstand heat of blaster fire, not power of gunfire. That´s why any bullet is going to go through as if the armor wouldn´t be there. It´s kinda weird, given that bullet shooting guns exist in Star Wars.
    3) The cyber attack depends on how Star Wars computer works in comparison to Earth one. It propably would be possible to hack Imperial computers, but Earth would need to understand the computers first.

There's a couple problems with your arguments here. The main thing that I think you're missing is that the Empire would attempt to incentivize existing governments to join the Galactic Empire willingly. Essentially just show the kinds of technological advancements that could be achieved through sharing technology since in terms of space travel and artificial intelligence and energy production Earth is relatively incredibly backwards. Once they've gotten the most powerful Earth governments to agree to joining the Empire they would then slowly but surely let economics become the weapon that they use to bring the rest of the planet under control. They wouldn't need to launch a full scale invasion. Governments like in America, China and Russia would be tripping over themselves to destroy any dissenters in order to acquire that technology. Meanwhile the Empire is just using us to strip mine our own solar system for them.

Don't forget the military industrial complex that pretty much took over the U.S's checkbook. Give us a couple of TIE fighters and a light cruiser to research and Lockheed Martin would have a new fighter out as quick as possible and if the empire gave our government ships and mining equipment, we'd mine the entire solar system for materials and create our own fleet of star destroyers. Plus our spec ops teams could be used to train imperial troopers on guerilla warfare. Honestly, it would be a win win on both sides.

The practicalities of large scale war come down to logistics. The Star Destroyers could sit in orbit and strike factories, rail heads, sea ports and runways and they win. No matter the courage or POSSIBLE tactical advantage of Terran militaries, as soon as the Empire's ships hold the orbitals, there is no winning the war. :(

@@Explodingtntfan I genuinely don't think any Terran militaries have a developed capacity to take down large targets outside of very low Earth orbit. ICBMs don't actually have very powerful rockets, in space terms. And their targeting systems really aren't set up for orbital targets either (probably). To add to the problem, nukes aren't great as space weapons, they would have to detonate in contact with the hull to do real damage. Could Terrans develop that sort of anti-spaceship weaponry versus high-orbiting targets, absolutely. Could we do it while under observation of a hostile force, without that force destroying the necessarily-large rockets first, I don't really think so. :)

      @mrdragon5142 Год назад +18

@@nathanramage1275 I am not an expert, by any means, but I don't think that the explosion from a nuke will be very effective in near vacuum, unless in pretty-much-direct contact. And I would assume that a space-faring warship is pretty well armored against small debris, even moving at orbital speeds. But, again, I think the real problem is primarily range. As I understand them, ICBMs really only have the power to loft their payloads into sub-orbital or very low earth orbit, as that is all they need to create the necessary range. Once there, the warheads are un powered and un guided, and simply wouldn't be in a high enough orbit to reach the Star Destroyers. *shrug* That's my guess, anyway.

As for the ICBMs you mentioned in your other comment, I'd imagine they very much do have the power to do so. ICBMs don't just launch their payload up, they travel sort-of horizontally, minimizing time in orbit as to avoid detection, while also heading directly to the target. If you pointed an ICBM straight up, you just saved a shit ton of fuel that you can now use to go straight up.

You're over rating earth soooo much
I reckon this is what the empire would need to conquer earth
2 Star Destroyers, multiple TIE fighter and some ground troops to use for occupation when it is over.
First, destroy every satellite on earth, that gets instantly rid of any non-cable communication methods we have as well as GPS and, since it's in space, we can't do crap about it.
      Then, start the bombardment.
Even if an ICBM manages to get into orbit and hit a destroyer (which I don't think would do anything because shields are a thing and ICBMS aren't precise to the meter, much less without GPS or other navigation methods) but, even IF it worked, and a destroyer was taken down...
Then just give the order, screw it, this planet is too backwards, glass it, the destroyer would retreat into a higher orbit from were no weapons could touch it and give an ultimatum, surrender or face total surface annihilation.
      Imperial Win.
Even if they decided for some reason to use conventional methods like ground troops and aerial dogfight they would still hold the edge over us.
They have likely an army of millions with thousands of air fighters. Now, admittedly TIE fighters would go down rather quickly (tho they probably have some sort of long range radar to detect stuff like missiles so it is kinda dubious if our famous missiles would be able to hit them at all) but as soon as the units with shields get in, we're screwed.
For ground units they can just use Russian tactics and flood us with men, men with good armour, canonically good aim (remember what Obi Wan said about Stormtroopers being great marksman? It's just that heroes often have meters thick plot armour that deflects blaster fire) and they have bacta and other solutions (so downed soldiers could be brought right back into action in a matter of minutes or hours rather than weeks or months)
Overall their tech skill is way too high for us to overcome, especially in stuff like prosthetics and other methods, if a soldier loses a leg here on earth, that's it, he's no longer able to fight but if a stormtrooper loses it he can get a robot one and be back to the battlefield in a day.
      About hacking... Maybe?
Except that, what you all seem to miss, is that they don't use USB, or standard computing, they're from a galaxy far far away, why the heck do we think they're gonna use normal computers?!
We'll need to first study their tech and coding If we want any hope at all to defeat their cyberdefense and that takes time.
Time that we'll not be given, because the empire will crush us.
(As an example, the rebels can hack into imperial systems quite easily... Because compared to them they at least are on the same tech field, we're trying to compare our computers to those of an empire which has figured out FTL flight, galaxy-wide colonisation, cloning, etc...)
So I ask again, what hope do we have?
If I had to say, this will be looking less like an actual war and more like War of the Worlds, our entire military struggling against a vastly superior enemy and failing at it for a while (tho in this case we may actually be able to down their walkers and TIE fighters given how badly they seem to be designed)
Or maybe the 7 hour war from Half Life? Something like that probably.
