It is not logical to assume that space programs could be the same way? And in the alternate universe of Valerian (Point of divergence being the Apollo-Soyuz mission of 1975) the CNSA and NASA might have specific flags and symbols that they put on their astronaut's suits while their space craft use the more widely recognized national flag?

Oh, and shore up the systems with gateways/wormholes. We don't want any pesky aliens sneaking in whilst we're off boiling potatoes.

This is all speculation, but who knows how many armed conflicts or actual wars were prevented by negotation and dealmaking in the halls of the UN. Once a conflict starts, however, no way the UN itself can do anything. However, as long as it remains there, politicians and diplomats still have an avenue to negotiate a cessation of hostilities, such as what happened to end the Suez Crisis in the 50s.

As a side note, an amazing opening that was so good, it made the rest of the film seem pedestrian in comparison - my friend thought it was a fun space opera cause he didn't have the letdown of the film never meeting the same heights again.

Same would go for non-chinese in a chinese spaceship, for any reason they would work together.

Oh! Man! I've known Valerian (and Laureline) since the 70s, and rarely I've seen a movie butcher a serie like this one did (even Disney's Star wars can't beat that). Valerian, then was well in advance for its time and still hold up to this days. The movie title combine 2 books of the collection : "l'empire des mille planètes" (Empire of a thousands planets) and "l'Ambassadeur des ombres" (The ambassador of the shadowed). Station Omega was in fact "Point Central" - A meeting place for all of the races of the known universe. Who created it? No one knows for sure as it was so long ago. All it is certain is that one day, a station was placed that the crossroad of the most traveled trade routes. Then, as in the movie, every races added part to the constructs (sometimes complete part of their homeworld) for what will be soon to be called Central Point. When Valerian and Laureline arrived at the station, they were escorting the fist Galaxity's Ambassador as Earth was just admitted to hold residence in it. Of course, Galaxity main interest in Central point was to use its "gunboat diplomacy" to regulate the business happening there... spoiler alerte!!!!!
It did not go well or as planed. The original story is way better and Laureline shine it this story.

Now imagine you're trying to design a flag representing every nation on earth. How do you get every country to agree on something when that peace is probably fragile?
e.g no one wants someone to be see as more important than them, so a lazy/bad design rises to the top. SO my case it its believeable that bad design exists.

While these are all valid criticisms, i think its important to take into account the kind of themes the Valerian is after.
It's the heavy science fantasy route, and in this kinda story you can kinda defend the stylistic choice to sacrifice details that would make the world make more sense in favour of helping the narative.
For example, having a flag made of 100's of nation flags instead of a new symbol is a bad idea realistically, but doing it this way helps to communicate to the viewer that the human federation exists and what it is in an instant, which is especially useful when the details of said federation are not particularly important given it's history and not particularly relevant to the story.

That's your critique? That the one specific flaw with this movie is its cinematography, the one thing it does well and frankly spent too much time on, forcing it to compromise on narrative, pacing, and character development?

3:46 can we mention the fact that there the Flag for WWI German and Facist Italy on a flag that supposedly was made at least 100 year after both flags were updated and changed at least once

English is the 3rd most popular language by # of speakers but it is the default for diplomacy and the UN and it is an American movie so I get why they chose it, its the least problematic part of the flag for me (having words on a flag is weird to begin with).

I’ve only read the first few Valerian comics, but they seemed to have scrapped the fun, colorful adventures of two agents of an Utopian Earth as they adventure through time and space with drab militaristic sci-fi in somewhat wondrous locals.

    You done wooshed my friend.
Given Valerian's tone, I'd argue 90% of the lazy mess is part of the intentional baked in campiness. I mean the Star Wars prequels are dead serious compared to this, so it's kind of expected.
You gave us great insight on important design aspects, but for this world, YOLOing it was the point. And you staightmaning for their joke was unintentional comedy gold.

"At least Nepal's flag isn't partially covered by the seal." I can see at least one flag being cropped by the seal in such a way that Nepal's flag sans insulting white space would have been left untouched. Couldn't they have at least swapped the two flags? -_-

Lazy sums up that whole movie really. The one thing that I noted during the opening "world building" scenes that you were showing was how the production quality was something more akin to a TV series rather than a 2017 movie with a budget of around $209M. Those uniforms particularly.
