Age is just a number and right now Phil's number is 1. I've waited for him to move into broadcasting because I admire his articulation, IQ, honesty and candid attitude. Turns out I'll be waiting longer due to those qualities making him an inspirational golfer, who's story isn't even close to being done.
He & his wife have been through a lot together: his wife nearly died while giving birth to their 3rd child, then his wife had advanced breast cancer which Phil took a year off from golf to help her beat it. Phil also had Rheumatoid Arthritis which he's had to deal with.
Notice the psychological aspects that Phil emphasized. Worked harder physically and worked harder to maintain psychologically. He believed in himself. This is what Abraham Maslow described as a Peak Experience. Hard work, perseverance, study, mental control all lead to true happiness and success. All young people should learn from this example of the end result of commitment and hard work.
Let's not forget that 366 yard drive!! The reason Phil is a fan fave is his authenticity, his willingness to Go For It and his appreciation for his fans. He is a solid man. We all wish the best for Phil going forward..

He can't hold a candle to Bobby Jones, nor can any other golfer hold a candle to him, including Jack or Tiger. Bobby Jones won a major at the US open in 1923 as an 21yr old. He played ONLY as an amateur, only played part-time and won 13 majors between 1923-1930. He remains the only golfer to win the calendar year grand slam in 1930. The only golfer to receive a ticker tape parade on Broadway in Manhattan. He also helped create the Master's tournament. Enough said...

The BEST part of this interview IMO is the fact that he pays homage to Tom Watson's miracle run at the British Open at age 59+ as being one of the top SPORTS achievements in history. I concur. A perfect 8 iron into the 72nd hole that inexplicably rolled over the green and a missed 8 foot putt, kept Watson from a major win at 59.
