In this drum lesson, I show you how to count and play 5-note groupings, then give you some creative ways to orchestrate them around the kit. This is a great way to expand your vocabulary and develop your ability to keep track of odd-note groupings that go over the barline.

Dude, the transcript overlay is awesome! Congrats! It looks really sleek and having it all on the screen like that really helps go through it while paused (as opposed to scrolling bar that other channels have)
Also -- thanks for a very creative lesson!
Lots of love from Romania!
Thanks, glad you dig it :)
Seriously, he's always killing it with the video editing 🙌
I took each line and learned it like a drum fill. Actually I learned it on the pad while keeping time with the hats. Time to take it to the kit now.
that snare sound is really awesome!!
That virgil donati analysis was inspirational indeed! This is great! Thanks!
Austin, I just downloaded the Creative Pad Patterns course, and I must say, you sir, are wise beyond your years. Very informative and educational! I've been telling the drum employees at my local Guitar Center about you!
Austin is kinda.... *BEAUTIFUL!*
I appreciate the 5 groupings, I’ve been looking for exactly that, and here it is from the man himself.
I’m happy you took the time for the sheet music on the side it’s great!
I like the notation on screen! Nice job.
Never fails to raise the bar over and over again. Excellent. Even the overlay is trick.
Dude. This is so important. Thank you.
Love the snare sound.
Thank YOu for a perfect video, exactly how its supposed to be. Great sounding, Clear notation (amazing job, looks very good). Very very helpful. I started to feel effortlessnes on the left hand doubles at the end of the 5 stroke. Super excited.
Very rhythmic, it's like a massage to our ears. A shame many drummers lack this dynamic. Great work
Really well explained, thanks Austin 👍🏻
Excellent Austin! Magic stuff! Thanks 🙌🙌👏👏
Austin! You are the man!
I like the appeareance of your score...make it easy to learn...thx Austin...
Really like that transcription style. Keep up the great work. Thank you for you videos :)
it does look pretty cool and it is helpful. definitively keep it if its not unreasonable. appreciate thee extra work!
I appreciate what you do. Please keep helping drummers🤘🏾
Man, I really like the way you explain rhythm concepts not only with this lesson, but at all) Very clear and understandable speech!
Outstanding explanatión...as always!!
Great stuff, very creative, must admit never really thought of 5,s like this, it’s usually 7’s.I like the way you work the patterns in that sound natural.
I always like the transcription on screen. On more complex ones, the suggested limb assignment (L,R,K) is nice. I think you are doing a great job.
Thanks for the video!
sheet notation is always welcome in my book. and something else you demonstrate is counting which drummers forget or think it not helpful. helps getting the rhythym in my head. great job austin👌👍
Amazing sounding drums. Great recording dude.
Side notation overlay looks awesome! All your content is incredible thanks man!
great video - great drumsound!
Hola, desde España te doy gracias por tu dedicacion y por darnos instrucciones sobre las tecnicas y groove de grades bateristas y tu buen gusto por interpretar esas tecnicas,tu ejecución es muy buena y pedagógica gracias.
This is SO good. Just found, love it
I was just going to go through my videos to wrap my head around these five note groupings and this video popped up. I’ve been following you for awhile with Study the Greats, but I’m really glad you’re doing some instructional videos. This is the best one I’ve seen explaining the counting, which is the most difficult thing for me. I hope you will be doing more of these. Your videos are always first class and very helpful. Thanks Austin.
Another awesome video Austin!
"mmmmm" that was awesome!
I dig the transcription overlay. Keep it!
Good video. Thank you so much for this video lesson.
Thanks a lot Austin really helped me. Happy new year.
Chart overlay looks amazing, thanks.
looks awesome, having the notes on the side is perfect
Best Austin Burcham lesson yet!
I’ll have to check the notation on something bigger than my iPhone but so far it looks great.
Thanks for a great, well made lesson
haha I'm really bad with sheet music and this one-ee-and-ee-ööa--aa thing. As soon as you started playing this I was surprised that it was really familiar rhythm. I've been using this a long time in beats and fills. It's great. Love it.
I think a lot of drummers intuitively feel odd note groupings but if you really want to manipulate it creatively, it definitely helps to understand the technical framework underneath.
Man.. the whole design of your videos is top notch and that overlay just underlines it. Great video by every means
Very nice. I always work with these concepts like this too 👌🏽🎶🥁
The notation is sick
Thanks for posting this!
Brilliant, you are a very good communicator. And what a beautiful sounding kit
Great lesson, very well structured, clearly explained. This is how teaching should be done!
Austin, just wanted to say thanks for your recording series. I’m just starting to record and you have helped me greatly. Keep at it bro!
the face at 5:23 is literally my favorite thing
Austin I have to say that I am stunned by your videos. I've been following you for quite some time now and I always really liked your content. That being said you made huge improvements with video editing, mixing not to mention how good of a drummer you are and how good of an educator you are. Your kit sounds amazing, your videos look amazing, your playing is amazing, your teaching is amazing and you make very interesting content ! Thank you
Thanks Dylan, I appreciate that a lot man. 🙏🏼
I've been experimenting with this concept a bit in the last couple years and I agree it's fun to play around with and helps when creative block becomes a problem. 7 note groupings can add even more spice! Great video!
Thank you austin, very nice lesson, your transcription looks great and easy to follow with your comments.
Yeah! !
Saludos desde Barcelona. .
😉
Killer dude! I try to work with this in the next week.
I´ll upload my progress and let you know how I did :D
Thanks for the exercise!
Love from Germany
Easily one of your best videos. Nice job, man! Thanks for the great content!
Your approach and on screen style is very accessible. Great explanations and the on screen transcription is clutch!
I have recently been working on the exact same concept except I am working on it as triplets. 5 beats of triplets = 3 groups of 5. When playing 4 bar phrases you can start the pattern on beat 4 of the 3rd measure and then it will end up back on beat 1 at the beginning of the 4 bar phrase. Playing over the pulse in the hi hat is definitely the most important part because otherwise its easy to lose the beat.
Yo! As a drum teacher this is definitely a very good beggining lesson into the world of 5's for our most advanced students! Top 3 drum youtuber for sure AB! Wish you great success.
Great overlay!!!! Love it and easier to follow in real time. Nice job!
Thank you Austin nice video! Absolutely like the notation layout (finally something that won't be covered by the play bar) and really like that snare sound too!
even with my laptop at a low volume, your snare sounds incredible, sick content also! keep up the good work!
Fantastic playing, great lesson, yes great vocal delivery (!), beautiful video. I am a pianist... Thank you so very much for your dedication!
Agreed with Alex on the transcript overlay, Austin...looks great!
I really like to use this patter in conjunction with RlRlr just because it switches you to left hand lead at the end. Makes it really interesting to explore the kit.
Awesom 🥢🥁damn that snare Sound good 🥳
transcription graphic looks awesome man!!
The transcript is great visuals are an easier way to learn. Try counting 12 123 12 123 as it progresses thru the chart. Austin is great at allowing us to be better players.
Love the notation. Easy to follow along
EXCELLENT Austin well done all around. Clear explanation, to the point, sounds great, and an excellent exercise!
I dig your current way of displaying the notation graphic. I’ve been experimenting with groups of 5 but in the context of one bar of 4/4 as a fill because in pop amd praise/worship where I play the most I don’t have to play 5 measures of a 5 note grouping.
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and knowledge. This tutorial is a great way to utilize 5 note groupings.
I loved this lesson because it’s so helpful yet easy to understand. Good job!
Austin, definately like the new note vision and grouping ,like the chop ,and like the 1-2-3-45 almost like the six stroke roll sound when played at 160 ,like the track too follow by as well. Thanks! Very cool.
Great vid, love the new transcription with the white over black. Made me go, “Oooo” before you even mentioned it. I like playing with RLLRR LRRLL w accenting the first note of each sticking w a kick.
Yea I use that sticking all the time! Smoothed out like a quintuplet but I hear/play it as a hand to hand triplet, just playing doubles between the accents.
@@abbdrums Right? Same here. Almost like a paradiddle-diddle . . . but missing a note of course.
This one is a banger(pun intended) just like all the rest that I have watched. Thank you for the great content!
I like the new look of the on-screen transcription... nice to see a multi-bar phrase laid out as a block rather than the more familiar one/two bar scroll through.
I love 5-note groupings and your orchestration(s) are nice and versatile. I agree it's good to count out all measures till it fully resolves on the one, to reinforce the note placement.
Also great to practice 1/2/3.. measure variants and coming out on the "1" on any measure you choose.
well explained!
You keep this up and soon we’ll be watching videos studying your greatness! I learn TONS from every video you make. 🤘🏻
Learning how to actually verbalize the counting like that is indeed very difficult. Most people can't do this right away. But man does it firm up your ability to actually play it.
Excellent lesson, the notation layout to the side looks great! And I don't even read drum music haha.
Man, between your playing, your teaching and grooving, the sound of the drums, and the recording quality, this lesson has been impactful as hell. You own that bitch! If you close your eyes at the end of this lesson you can hear a little Vinnie in there... Just sayin'
Bruhhh I dig the chart 🔥😭👌
Like this sticking a lot. I have been using rlrrl. good to mix tem. Also good for an alt jazz ride eg 5.5.6 or two bar fill 5.5.5.2.5.5.5 also nice variations with double paradiddles and paradiddlediddles
VERY COOL!! I am just getting back into drumming...timing is just as if I were beginning for the very first time. What a great exercise to get that time and stick control back in shape!!
Great chop! Great video! Great sound! Great teaching!....GREAT Austin 😃 Thanks for your incredible work man 🙏
Great work
love it, thank you
good one. thanks!
I really like the transcript overlay! Good work on that!
The 5 grouping improvise on top of that bass line sounds sooo good! I'm gonna practice it this week, thanks
Great 🥁 teacher
graphics are excellent thanks+1
Hi Austin. I found the counting actually easier if you count 1-2 1-2-3 in 16ths over the bar-line against the 4/4 quarter note pulse. Try it. :-)
That's easier but not better for keeping track of where you are in 4/4! You need to keep track of the beats and bars to really stay locked in.
Great exercise for combine with some paradiddle fills.
Loving the notation design Austin!! cool lesson aldo!
THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!
great lesson as always, Austin! I've tried this a couple of weeks ago for the first time and I've found that mixing both of the variations of the beats you've showed sounds awesome during my practice sessions, you could try that too if you haven't already (accenting 1 and 3 in the first beat and then 1, 2 and 3 in the second)
Thank you for your amazing content you're keeping upload! and seeing it in such an incredible quality is just pure fun
Love it thank you 🙏🏻
Yeah man, great vid, love the transcription overlay! Do that man! That floor Tom is fatter than me!
Nice lesson bro! Can you make another drum lesson how to make tasty groupings? With a variety of other groupings
Excelente transcrição e explicação Austin! Sempre usei as 5-Notes e suo muito nos dias atuais! Parabéns !!! Belíssimo vídeo..... Grande abraço aqui do Brasil...
Great video
Looks good, man!
