Man, it sucks that this guy doesn't do videos anymore. Some of the best, most straight forward stuff on RUclips. And he legitimately might have the best sounding drums I've ever heard. Great player too!
Agreed. I would love to hear more of that in contemporary rock and even metal music. Today it's always either that low muddy "thud" sound or that tired old "gunshot" sample -_-
Here's how I was finally able to do this comfortably: After many failure attempts for the first groove, I realized something with my independence is wrong. So I put my pad infront of me and I started doing double strokes. As I was doing so, I accented the second note of each double. Easy peasy still, I know. Then I tried adding a foot on each unaccented note (the first note of each double) and that's when I realized that THAT! is the reason I couldn't do the groove. I COULDN'T PLACE MY FOOT ON AN UNACCENTED NOTE! Took it reeeaal slooow. Just double strokes, second notes accented and a bass drum on the unaccented. You do that and I guarantee you, the first groove will be peace of cake to achieve
Awsome Lesson Austin! Very clear. I love the idea of teaching the strong vs the weak beats on the bass drum without losing the groove of the hi-hat... then trying to make the weak beats feel just as good as the strong beats. Nicely done. Definitely gonna share this with my students.
A few years back I used to struggle with this... until my band wanted to cover Tom Sawyer by Rush. After that I can put the bass drum at any point in the time/space continuum no problem! xD
@@mattmarkus4868 I was making a call back to when he covered the song with some band on some cruise ship when he played eighth notes instead of sixteenths
Every video I've seen Austin publish has been enough above my skillset to push me past my current ability. I thought I had my 1/2 X shuffle solid. I've never put the bass only/all the ah's before, and it humbled me instantly. I still use his practice pad warmup before I begin practicing. I look forward to more videos. Thanks for taking the time to put to put these lessons up!
Great video 👍 This is definitely much harder than you think when you’re looking at the dynamics of keeping it all uniform and in sync. Especially with the hi-hat. Thanks again!!
I've been trying to perfect that ghost note after the backbeat on the uptempo halftime shuffle for a year. I still suck.... yours is super clean! Thanks for the lesson...
This guy is a great teacher. His hands warm up video is my go to warm up. His half time shuffle exercise, as well as the Moller upstroke bass drum exercise isn't as easy as some think.
OMG! This one did it for me. I immediately jumped on my kit and started practicing it. Cause I've struggled with those 16th notes and Bass Drum for years. Now I know how to work it out. For years I've wanted to learn the Purdie Shuffle. Here it starts!
Great lesson. I always enjoy your videos and that's a cool mini-panning effect during your explanations, makes it feel more virtual like you're almost in the room!
Austin, these exercises are a great way of isolating the difficulty in many grooves that I’ve struggled with. Hopefully they will get my 16th note stuff to a level that I’ll be comfortable enough to not concentrate so much and let it flow more. I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I don’t normally comment on stuff, but I gotta acknowledge the value of your video here. Thanks.
Austin, thx for a focused drum lesson. I'm a resurrected drum player after a 50 year hiatus, and now retired playing for pleasure and as a Hobby. This is great tip for coordination of hand and foot. My goal is to be able to equal the caliber of my playing to the level of say, Dino Danelli (Rascals). I play each day, to My Music : Petty, Mellencamp, CCR, Stones, Beatles, Cars, Shaw Blades, Capton, Melissa E., Eagles even Linda Ronstadt( probably the original Diva.....She was damn good and her studio band [some of whom beca e The Eagles], and more....basic Rock. Playing Music is a real pleasure in life. So I try to keep it enjoyable and not let it get to me by frustrating me. Be well all, halpy drumming.
Great lesson Austin. Went upstairs and worked on it right away. No problems with the sixteen note groove but the half time shuffle was a little tricky but I eventually got it using the push pull method on the hats. The dynamics sounded and felt great. Thanks man.
Regarding the half time shuffle example: Even trickier is putting the bass drum on the SECOND triplet, essentially mirroring the ghost notes on the snare.
That halftime shuffle! Thank you Bernard Purty!!! My Man! And this explanation with the bar line , very informative and i enjoy teaching style Thank you
Great content as always Austin. This is something I’ve really been focusing on lately. Not only trying to eliminate flaming between my limbs but trying to sharpen my ears so that I can lock up a band in this way. For years I never realized that I had been neglecting such a crucial aspect of making a band sound good. Once I started getting chewed out by band leaders on paying gigs I realized I had to do some maintenance. I’d love to hear your take on listening intently to the players around you to eliminate flamming within a band mix.
U have some good videos man. Thx for showing ur techniques. I played the snare for 3 yrs in school and I self taught myself on the kit. I'm not a pro or anything and it's always good to study other people's techniques. Carter Beauford was a drummer I looked up to highly. So him and Dave Weckl and Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan r pretty much the type of drumming I love. Thx again and keep'm coming!
I just bought a kit again after 20 years and am enjoying my drumming more than ever with some good stuff on RUclips but your lesson and style wins hands down. The two songs mentioned by others below (Tom Sawyer by Rush) and Rosanna by Toto).... cool. You just helped me crack these elusive beats. I really enjoyed your lesson. So concise and to the point, exceptionally well executed with great tips (and what a snare sound!!) You just got yourself a new subscriber from this one video. Thank you and looking forward to seeing more. :)
Great idea. thanks for sharing. Always enjoy your posts. Another idea on the first exercise could be to run down say the first page of Stone, playing the BD where the left (or right) hand is notated, to give some more patterns to shed (e.g., what you showed would be the first two exercises of the first page of stone...with the BD playing the RH notes only, and keeping the HH going throughout and snare on 2 and 4). Keep up the great work!
i should've tried this before chiming in on variations. :) This is deceptively hard...to play it with limbs lining up and make it groove and move up the tempo. I played around with the first one a bit today...I've got a lot of work to do to get it up to an 'Africa' like tempo...
I don’t even play drums but guys who do drums lessons always seem so cool and down to earth usually anyone doing guitar lessons is at least somewhat annoying
Nicely played with good feel. The one thing that raises the value of this clip is the explanation of the role of brain functioning in conceptualising limb synchronisation.😀👍
I have just got this down. Been practicing drums for ten years and have developed quite a bit. But i starter notice that I changed my hi-hat hand During groves. Incredibly irritating and I couldnt stop me from doing that. But back to basic With practice like this i have now much more control.
this is awesome Austin, thanks so much! I've done similar exercises using Gary Chafee's permutations, and have seen much improvement in how tight things sound
um 7 days is a 5/8 , the hi-hat plays 8th notes not 16th notes ;) There is a accent on every second quarter note on the hats which makes them toggle from down beat to up beat from bar to bar. It is a tricky groove , the 8th notes are pretty fast as well because the bpm is fast.. but they are not 16th notes , hth
I remember a few months ago trying to learn "Inhale" by Plini, and it was really difficult placing the bass drum in all these weird places while keeping that 6/8 shuffle groove going on the hats. I still struggle playing it to speed, but it's a cool thing to work on. Troy Wright is an absolute beast! Too bad he isn't with Plini anymore. :(
Hey Austin....can you make a video .to break down a buddy rich fill.......its bugle call rag from drummerworld......the fill is at the 1.40 mark of the video

That snare sound is giving me goosebumps... 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Maybe this is the most beautiful snare sound I heard on youtube in a long time!
Agreed. I would love to hear more of that in contemporary rock and even metal music. Today it's always either that low muddy "thud" sound or that tired old "gunshot" sample -_-
Maybe cut out a bit of the ring, but yeah, it's a great sound.
It’s really about solidifying your eternal clock which is the next step
after getting down the dynamics & coordination!
Thats a beautiful snare sound! You’re really pulling the tone out of the drum. Great lesson as well, thanks 🙏🏻
seconded. that snare sound.....damn.
Indeed
Third..ed? That snare sounds sweet AF
Because most non millennials get pissed at everything millennials do and it's really fucking funny to watch.

I was just about to make a comment about Tom Sawyer. That'll teach you some foot independence for sure, unless you're portnoy!
Or Danny Carey lol
Nathan Worobey stop perpetuating that myth about portnoy. Please. He’s not a great drummer.
@@mattmarkus4868 I was making a call back to when he covered the song with some band on some cruise ship when he played eighth notes instead of sixteenths
@@mattmarkus4868 Also, he is one hell of a drummer. He's better on the drums than you are at anything.

It's tough man! It still gives me trouble... and traditional grip certainly doesn't make it any easier either haha.

Great lesson. I always enjoy your videos and that's a cool mini-panning effect during your explanations, makes it feel more virtual like you're almost in the room!
Excellent lesson Austin! You're a great player and instructor. I'm a seasoned player, but you can never stop learning. Thanks for the inspiration.
You can also try the middle triplet on the shuffle. Bit more tricky but great for coordination & bd accuracy
Incredible lesson from one of the greats! Congrats, what you do for the drumming community is really amazing.
Austin, these exercises are a great way of isolating the difficulty in many grooves that I’ve struggled with. It's cool seeing a drummer who also uses traditional grip! Cool exercise grooves
I have my students practice so fresh & so clean for this. Great exercise & points/sounds here. Quality of execution is key 🔑 👌🏽🥁
It’s not simple at all to play that groove accurately as you did. Thank you Austin.
Love that snare !!
This video was very refreshing to watch, very clear explanation and practical exercise

Right on, man. I dig your videos. Thank you for the inspiration.

Excellent demonstration Austin on just how simplistic exercises can improve the quality of your playing ay all levels.
Exactly what I needed for the kick, you rule.
Great approach, we need a series with precision lessons for every element! GO! :D

Awesome exercise Austin! I'm going to try the 16th hand pattern and half-time hand pattern with bass drum doubles too.

I like the notation for the ghost notes. Much better than using so many parentheses cluttering up the sheet music.
