This is my first video lesson I've ever done on RUclips. I figured I would start with something that I use regularly in my practice routine that I think would benefit a lot of guys out there who may be struggling with developing a strong sense of time. I call them "Ghost Clicks"... I'm not sure if there is a more common term for this but I think it works pretty well. It's a simple concept... just setup a click track to play for 1 bar and then be silent on the 2nd bar and just repeat that over and over. The challenge is to keep the time when the click is silent and to see how far off you are when the click comes back in. This can be a very difficult exercise to do but it actually does become pretty fun because it almost becomes like a game of trying to match up with the click when it comes back in. I think this is one of the best ways to really force you to learn to subdivide in your head and develop your inner clock when you have no audible reference point to keep you on track. Figure out a way to record yourself so you can objectively listen back and see how off or on you actually were. This exercise is a serious wake up call! Download the practice tracks from the link at the top and give it a shot next time you practice and let me know how it works for you guys! See you in the next one...

Something about your Traditional grip, your badass look, and the way you speak or throw random Ghost movie scenes in has convinced me that you are my new favorite youtube drumming instructor
haha that's awesome man, thanks
Close your eyes. It's the beard that's manly. The beard is the most essential rudiment... This includes women. Manicure that beard on your vertical smile, but don't shave it off. Your rhythm suffers... And asking to see your ID is more creepy than this comment :/
😅o
Man, I'm glad I found this channel! Enough of the ridiculous 60min Drumeo vids, you just give me the straight material I need to get better!
1:25 - 1:54 - - - > That's me. :)))
Thank you Mr. Austin! Will definitely follow your advice. Great job! God bless!
I love how when the metronome comes back in it sounds like your kick drum is triggering the cowbell. Excellent exercise and video. Thanks for the lesson.
Great video! Another way I found this practice useful is to play three bars of time and play various fills for the 4th bar ghost click. It will really tighten up your fills! Great stuff Austin!!
Austin, thanks so much for the ghost click files. They're great! Happy New Year and have a great 2016!!
Thanks Austin! Your Ghost Clicks are the most practical things I've ever downloaded!
Nice, glad you dig em!
I think this is one of my first "likes" and comments on RUclips, but I have been working with a click for awhile and I never thought about using it this way, this should be a most known for any musician, drummer or not. Thanks man !
Thanks man! It's a useful practice tool for sure...
Thanks for the amazing tip Austin! I will for sure study with your click audios. Another good tip for time keeping, is to practice with an almost unhearable click, so you will hear it just when you get off or when you stop.
Cheers!
Thank you Mr. Burcham! You just made the metronome my favorite type of video game.
Nice approach, i'm gonna try this out!
btw - your snare sounds sweet af! :-D
Austin, you are not only an awesome player, but an amazing teacher. In just the couple of videos I watched I already learned so much. Thank you, brother. God bless :-)
Thanks man 🙏
Great video! Thanks for the ghost click tracks
Thanks for those click tracks... this is really useful.
***** no problem, hope they help!
They're especially great to use with a loop pedal. My ehx22500 lets me upload my own rhythm tracks and change the tempo, so these are perfect. I don't have space for a drum set anymore but even as a guitarist these are super useful.
Good stuff! I understand how it's important to not just rely on the click but trust your own meter. Good exercise!
awesome video, alot of drummers struggle with timing. Great video with a nice tracks!
Great practice. Never tried it. Thank you for those tracks!
Thanks a lot for theclick tracks... very useful
Thank You so much, Austin !! Greatings from Stuttgart in Germany.
Thank you for making this video and Ghost Click tracks!
Great stuff to practice right here. Thanks for the ghosty clicks!
+tdrum21 no problem!
Thanks for the click tracks they're a big help
Very nice Austin.
Wicked trick right there. Thanks for sharing this tip.
Good idea... Thanks ... i will practice this metronome
Thanks mate!
Well man I have read this exercice in many books or tutorial... Never tried because of my internal lazyness, but I guess you convinced me. Anyway, will start next week...lol. Congrats man and thanks for your lessons, they are all really cool, I hope they will have a great echo on drummers. And you're a great drummer by the way, l !! see ya.
Thanks so much man... now I've gotta catch up to your channel! haha, killin it
thanks, this is very good tool!
Awesome lesson! Zero dislikes! I hope it stays that way!
Thank you for this info, really appreciated. ^_^
thanks a lot Austin!
0 Dislikes! Really deserved Austin, great video!
Great vid!!!
THANKS
Your RUclips page is awesome
Hi there, congrats on your channel all your vids are really helpful!, question what sofware do you use to play vids in slow motion?
Nailed it!
Man, your snare drum sounds just amazing. Outstanding tutorials bro! Btw... any tips on tuning? Your drums sound amazing. Also... what are the specs of your setup? Drum brand, mics?
+Alexis Solis I'm planning on eventually doing some videos on tuning in the future. Also check my website to see my full gear list... abbdrums.com
Hi, so you are graduated from MI, nice.... yeah this one is very help. Thanks for the tips
Thank you !
hey man! I took lessons with Jason at MI too, been practicing with this concept ever since.
+Ankylophobia Nice! That's awesome.
Very good!
Thank you for sharing this tip! Can I know if you have tips on how to transit between various subdivisions (table of time) accurately? Like, from 8th triplets to 16th and back.
Reconsidered suicide after trying this. Still a great exercise!
Michel Araujo reconsidered haahhahahaaa
What a great lesson, I’ve been trying to get a sense of timing for quite some time ?? This so spot on and really simplistic. I’m looking forward to some of your other course on drum tunning and faster hand technic . How do I go about downloading. I have several metronomes how do I find the ghost clicks . Thanks
Hi Edwin, when you access a course on the website, all the downloadable files will be available on the first page of the course :)
Thanks Austin .
Tricky exercise! Let me get to it
I promise these clicks are doing my head in
still helpful
Great idea, thanks for sharing it! Anyone know about a programmable metronome or computer software that you could make ur own ghost click tracks with? My first thought is using guitar pro cause I've got that but maybe there's a better tool. I know there's online metronomes, maybe one of them could do this.
Great idea. Crap. Now I gotta try it.
What click app are you using in this video? Good stuff!
+TheJu2ber It's just a cowbell sound I had programmed inside Pro Tools. In my newer videos I use an app called Tempo Advance which is a cool metronome if you've got an iOS device.
good ass teachers are in again
Austin, I have no problem locking in when playing a pattern. I can stay on time for a measure or two and come back in with no problem. My problem comes when I move to a fill. that's where is all falls apart. Got any suggestions hints or clues for me here?
Your Tempo changes, when your feel change. So the secret is to keep the feel stable, even during fill ins. ;-) Big challenge. Try this system: inner-pulse-trainer.com/en/home/
thanksssssssssss
oh man you studied at MI !!!! cool. Are you a full time instructor ??
+krthkh nah, i was just a student there from 2008-2010
What cymbal setup are you using right to left?
+Eric Spencer I have an extensive gear list on my website at abbdrums.com if you'd like to check that out.
Man, your timing is better than most. Maybe some pro Drumeo guests playing for 1million years are better... Meh. They should fly you out to Drumeo HQ IMO. You get down to business and show how things should be done, MMMMMMM!
Wait, wait, wait, wait, WAIT! So, what you're telling me is, I actually need LESS cowbell?! Like, exactly HALF as much? OMG, Christopher Walken lied to me! I'm so confused!
Some of the links dont work ://
No dislike wowow
U in. A band ?
You look like Peter Forsberg
salve che strumento è quello che hai sul lato sinistro, sembra un metronomo, puoi informarmi grazie .
从白衣少侠那里来的举手。
I just come to the video by the introduction in that video made by someone.
