Advanced Triplet Ostinato Groove | Quick Concepts

  • In this first episode of Quick Concepts, I share a fairly advanced groove I'm working on which features a triplet ostinato with the left hand on the hi hat, while the right hand shifts between quarter notes and quarter note triplets on the stack. It's tough to play but pretty cool when you get it down!

      I second that notion. Great job Austin. The triplet ostinato pattern reminds me of a Danny Carey syncopated groove but a can’t recall the name of the song.

    This shall hence forth be known as the Austinato!
    Really like the idea of this series. If I may suggest, I think it would be more accessible if the Quick Concept had more of an evolution to it from super beginner mode to beast mode. No practice pads or anything, keep it quick, I just mean starting a little more basic and build it (I know the title is advanced of course)

    That's a bad ass groove concept! Have you tried playing it as a straight time groove instead of half time? I would love to see that, especially with the quarter note triplets! That would be one busy right hand and would have a neat polyrhythmic/meter feel!

    I like the format. Hope you don’t stop with study the greats altogether though. The enthusiasm you’d have for the licks from study the greats was nice.
    For this one, I wasn’t so much a fan of the groove at first but the quarter note triplets brought a very interesting aspect to it. Interested to try it for myself. Thanks! Keep up the great work!

  • @radiosant
    @radiosant 6 лет назад

    Hey Austin,
    I’ve been watching and immensely enjoying your videos for quite a while (the Keith Carlock paraddidle concept initially pulled me in) but I’ve not commented before. One slight variation with this new pattern that I would like to see you try is playing the right hand on the ride as you did, but moving to the bell of the cymbal for the quarter note triplets. When I heard you play this pattern, it struck me that with some very slight adjustments this could easily become a Latin feel, and shifting that part of the pattern to the bell is a step in that direction. Thanks again.

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  6 лет назад

      Hey Anthony, I had actually tried that when I was practicing it but I was having trouble traversing the distance from the bell back to the snare in time for it to sound clean so I just didn’t attempt it in the video. The bell does sound cool in this groove though if you can pull it off.👌🏼

    • @radiosant
      @radiosant 6 лет назад

      Hey Austin, thanks for the reply. I've not yet even had the guts to attempt this groove, and your comments on the difficulty of moving the ride cymbal pattern to the bell makes a lot of sense. Also, please don't think my comment was intended in any way as a criticism or a pissing content - if anything, your response is that much more dispiriting to me; when I read it, I thought, "damn, if he chose to omit the bell, there's no way in hell I'm ever playing it!" Thank you so much for all of your hard work. The transcriptions and conceptual ideas you've provided in STG have improved me as a drummer immensely.

    Good stuff.
    Melody and independence.
    Great vocabulary builder.
    Lessons with the greats are fun and all but this feels like it builds more individuality in a drummers voice and identity. I suppose they both do but this turns away from hero worship and aping a well known cats style.

    • @abbdrums

      For some reason I just never ended up liking it in the final video. I feel like it's pretty easy to see what my kick is doing from the overhead shot so I just let that take care of all that. If I'm demonstrating foot technique though, I definitely use the foot cam for that.

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  6 лет назад +2

      Man, there's just something about these headphones I still love. I can still hear the acoustic low end from the drums but it filters out all of the harsh high end and it just sounds more natural than the in-ears. The in-ears are definitely more accurate and clear, though, so for certain applications I will go with those. But for practicing/informal stuff, I still dig the headphones 🤷🏻‍♂️
