Another new A7C owner here! Looking for a quality 24mm lens without breaking the bank. This looks great! I’m in between this one and the Sigma 24mm f1.4. Also very nice, but more expensive, around $900 and quite larger/heavier. 🤯 Decisions....
Congrats for your body. I also tried the sigma, optically not bad at all, however AF suffers shooting against the sun and also has much weaker performance in the corners for astro. Not talking about size and weight... The sigma is heavy duty... would be way front heavy with the 7C.
What a breath of fresh air. As we're information seekers, practical comparisons from an astrophotographer, truly seals the deal. I was on the fence about Samyang/Rokinon, but their recent history into the mirrorless segment is improving. I may need to subscribe to learn more.

Thank you for this great duel! I also did not expect that both lenses would be so similar in their image. I have now ordered the Samyang and I am excited to see how it will be used, because the price is very tempting.
Which is funny because the sun is as white as it gets (technically slightly blueish, but that is not perceivable). Simple test case: snow is white, not yellow ;-)
I have the Sony 24mm GM and was considering selling it for buying the Samyang, mainly because it would fit better on my A7CII, and the minor weight. But I love the rendering of the Sony since the first picture I took. Fortunately you compare the bokeh at different appertures between this two lenses, and as I see, Sony is more pleasant. Thank you for the comparison beyond the pixel-peeping, which I'm not very interested in. I guess I'll keep the GM! Congratulations for the comparison.
Amazing comparison! I've been struggling to choose between getting this new Samyang 24 or the 24 gm to pair with my 35 gm. And since there were no direct comparison videos between them, I've instead waited since I felt that the Samyang might deliver on their promises of its astro capabilities. And just 'wow'! Considering how cheap it is, it's almost a crime not to at least consider buying it. Thanks a lot for producing such a great comparison video. I will order the Samyang tomorrow and I doubt that I will be disappointed. I'm looking forward to more videos from you! And if you find something odd and/or bad with the Samyang, please share your thoughts.

If Samyang could release a 14mm 1.8 to compete with the Sony 14mm GM lens, I would be extremely happy. Especially if they could include that “Astro button” on it. I have the Samyang 24mm 1.8, and the Samyang MF 14mm 2.8 but I don’t like their 14mm much. Been trying to save up for the Sony GM 14mm.
If they would release one, I'll compare them. I can tell you that the 14 Gm is one of the best lenses out there, will be hard to compete with. Tested against the sigma 14 1.8... there is not a lot to say

Sorry, i might’ve missed this. But you said that you recalibrated the Samyang lens due to incorrect infinity focus? How did you do that? Via the docking station? Thank you.
Indeed, by default my copy was not perfect for infinity focus. The calibration is easy simply adjust the correct focus then press and hold the button for 3 seconds and this will become your new infinity focus. In the description there is also a video on the custom button

Thanks for a good review. the star trail at the corner of the frame of Samyang, imo It is an affect of the distortion of the lens. the star is streched by that affect.

Hi, thank you, appreciate your feedback. Yes, I've tested, there are almost identical. AF Speed is 1:1, the transition might look a little smoother to my eye on the GM.
Interesting review, thank you for doing this. We can see that from 1.4 the sony has a little more contrast. very interesting comparison. At f1.8 and f2, which lens has an advantage in vignetting ? and any idea how much ? I have owned the 24GM and loved it for its rendering. Tried on stars, good result even wide open, but some CA. I now have the Sony 20mm f1.8, basically no Ca, sharper.. but I kind of miss the 24mm focal length and the GM has better vignetting (which means less need to correct / increase the noise in the corners).
Thank you, appreciate your feedback. The samyang only has the advantage in vignetting wide open. Once you stop down the GM, it has the advantage. I agree that there is some CA on the GM, however I can live with that due to the aperture advantage. I also the had the 20 1.8... Sold it after 2 weeks... For me the GM was the clear winner. On top of that I could not live with the moving/wobbling part in the 20 1.8, annoyed me every time I touched it... But that's my bad 😅
Great video, Laszlo! What type of calibration did you do after first using to fix focus problems? Some manipulation inside sony camera or samyang dock station?
Nice review, thanks. It's a remarkable little lens, holding it's own against the GM. Although I'm still not clear what the M1/M2 switch is for....if anyone knows?
@@bellalaszlo2294 I can recommend the Sony ECM-W2BT...It gives an amazing 200 meter range with full strereo audio, it is USB rechargeable and it has a 2 hour longer battery life than the Rode equivalent (9 hours vs 7 hours). It comes as two parts...One that slides onto the cameras hot shoe and the other is a bluetooth clip on mic. They can be used separately, or both together, and you can plug a Lavalier mic into the blutooth mic to eliminate more background audio. Sony do an optional stereo Lavalier mic specially for this purpose. The unit on the camera transfers the audio to the camera through the hotshoe, so it is completely wireless/cordless mic option.
While you’re at it, you don’t need music throughout. Most of the time you don’t need it at all. Audio is at times more important than the video. Keep it high quality and simple! Good luck.
Probably because he mostly tested infinity focus where the Samyang is optimised for. Astro, landscape. The GM works equally well up close, the Samyang really loses the race there. Also: colors, contrast. The latter was mentioned in the video though. Samyang does have much less focus breathing, but alas also much lower light transmission.
Do you think this lens or a tamron 17-28 would be better suited for landscape shots in general? I would like the Sony gm but can’t afford so this is where I’m at..
If I would need a "general" lens I would go for the Tamron. If I would mainly shoot the MW and astro landscapes I would go for the Samyang. I also have a 12-24 f4 lens for the "general" landscape shots ;-)
@@laszlobella-lighthunters thank you so much for your response and review! Now if you had to pick between the tam 17-28 vs Sony 15-35 f4, what would you choose? 🧐
As I had the Sony zeiss 16-35 f4 I know exactly how amazing that lens is, I would go for that one. For general landscape f4 is more than enough, 1mm on the wide end also makes a difference. I loved the sun star the zeiss produces. I agree, that for astro it's not the perfect lens, however you can buy an entry level star tracker ;-)
I'm so confused. I own a Canon R6 and also Sony A74 and I need a 24mm lens for either body. Do I get the Canon RF 24mm F1.8 STM or do I get the newly released Sigma 24mm F1.4 Art for the Sony - and now the Samyung 24mm or look for a used Sony native 24mm f1.4 GM or even the Sony 20mm F1.8 G. So many choices - Thanks Steve ( Istvan ) from Canada. Mostly needed for family outings and family vlogs.
Hi Steve, I understand you're confused, considering you need to think about two different bodies. Unfortunately I have never owner Canon mirrorless body, don't count on me with that :) For the Sony body I would go for a second hand 24gm as it's also good for investment. It's an outstanding all around lens. If you're on a budget, go for the Samyang 24mm. An extra advice: I probably would not have the same focal length for both bodies ;)
Szia!
If you test the lenses on winter landscapes where there is a lot of snow, then the GM 24mm 1.4 has quite serious chromatic aberrations. But Samyangs, according to numerous reviews, having an ideal optical component, are very weak in terms of design, they often break down, just crumble into pieces in hands.
Yes, I could agree with that. It never broke in my own hand but seen pictures and stories around that. Agree with CA on the GM, it suffers a bit. Still offers better corner sharpness and a massive build.
Thank you and appreciate your comment. Had so many challenges that I could not produce to much video content. I'll be back, now the things have settled!
Forgive the stupid question I'm about to ask but since I've never done astrophotography yet I'm trying to figure it out. Is the orange at the bottom of the photo the sun coming up just before dawn or is it just after sunset? I live in Arizona and I'm thinking of getting this lens to try to get into astrophotography. Lot's of extremely dark places in the desert out here with little to no light pollution. Great video by the way!
There is no stupid question, we all starting to learn from scratch ;) This orange colour is light pollution. If you're shooting astro landscape, it's not enough to go to a dark spot. You'll need to consider cities, villages in your shooting direction. I would recommend this lens to start with, good bang for buck. Watch some astro videos to understand the basics (even better if you can join some workshops) then use every clear night to go out and practice ;)
@@bellalaszlo2294 thanks for the response. I live in Arizona and there's a lot of very dark places around me in the desert with very little light pollution. I'm probably going to buy this lens, although I do have the Samyang 45mm 1.8 that I might try first although I realize it's not very wide. I really do like the button and led light to automatically put it to infinity which is really cool.
@@highwayman1224 sounds great. The 45mm focal length could be an option, however then you'll need to stitch panoramas. I would recommend start with the basics then move to the next level, step by step ;)
@@highwayman1224 Just go out with a tripod and shoot shots under about 30 seconds (when star trails become very noticeable) - assuming after you've watched some how-to videos. I've gone out with an f4 and taken some fun shots. I assume you'll go south towards Patagonia, AZ.
@@charmerci I live just west of Phoenix in Buckeye. I ended up buying a Samyang 24mm 1.8 and went out to my fishing spot in Arlington and got some nice pictures. I also just got a Rokinon 14mm 2.8 so I can get more of the milky-way in the sky. Fun stuff for sure.
The eye af work excellent on both lenses, honestly I could not spot any difference in stills. In video the Samyang had a little more af noise, but it was still negligible. That is why I did not dedicate a particular spot in the video
I wouldn't say negligible, but manageable. If you have the money every stop brings value. The question is always how much more you're willing to pay for the extra light. There isn't a full stop difference, ISO 1600 vs 2500.
@@laszlobella-lighthunters thanks for your honest answer. The Sigma 24mm 1.4 weight is almost 3 times more than the samyang one this is definitely something which I'm thinking about. Would you still take the sigma 24mm 1.4 with 665g?
I've tried the Sigma as well. Was no doubt for me to get the GM. I would not even use it at 1.4 was not really impressed with the aberrations...I would go for the Samyang
Én meg vallom őszintén, a Samyang egyre jobb. Főleg az új szeriák. A régieket én útáltam, pénzkidobás. I had the Batis as well. Did not compare them side by side, however by impression they are on the same level, in terms of image quality. CA is well handled on the batis, the Samyang is a touch sharper though. I wouldn't pay that much for the Batis, doesn't worth that much more

Abszolút egyetértek. Ha nem nagyítok bele, tényleg elhanyagolható a különbség, dehát ezért vagyunk fotósok, hogy vizslassuk a pixeleket :) Ár érték arányban abszolút nyerő a Samy

Great review, but sound recording (when talking) could be better.
Thanks for the feedback, I already did some steps to improve for the next one 😉
Thank you for the amazing comparison! Have you had a try the Samyang lens on crop body, for example A6000?
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I had no chance yet to try on apsc body. I'm pretty sure that the result would be very similar
@@laszlobella-lighthunters Thank you so much!
@bellalaszlo2294
Great video, Laszlo! What type of calibration did you do after first using to fix focus problems? Some manipulation inside sony camera or samyang dock station?
I only used the lens button to calibrate it, normally this is the only thing you have to do.
Nice review, thanks. It's a remarkable little lens, holding it's own against the GM. Although I'm still not clear what the M1/M2 switch is for....if anyone knows?
You badly need a mic. Can hardly hear you. Otherwise a good video.
No doubts to get a nice mic, will have it for the next one 😉
Good luck.
When a guy who is on national geography says its good it has too haha
Haha, thanks, indeed when I say it I mean it ;-)
This guy feels so bad after paying for his GM Lens and discovered this lens
Haha, good one, and kind of true story
Unfortunately I have never owner Canon mirrorless body, don't count on me with that :)
For the Sony body I would go for a second hand 24gm as it's also good for investment.
Complimenti per il video e la recensione.. Sembra davvero un ottimo obiettivo e sopratutto quanta differenza in soldi! Grazie ancora buona giornata!
Thank you man for this video….really!!!!!!
You're very welcome, appreciate your comment
Great video, very informative, get ng this lens too. Pity you stopped.
Thank you and appreciate your comment. Had so many challenges that I could not produce to much video content. I'll be back, now the things have settled!
Hello from Hungary my Astro Maestro friend
Hello back from Hungary as well :)
@@laszlobella-lighthunters let's get rock
Forgive the stupid question I'm about to ask but since I've never done astrophotography yet I'm trying to figure it out. Is the orange at the bottom of the photo the sun coming up just before dawn or is it just after sunset? I live in Arizona and I'm thinking of getting this lens to try to get into astrophotography. Lot's of extremely dark places in the desert out here with little to no light pollution. Great video by the way!
There is no stupid question, we all starting to learn from scratch ;)
This orange colour is light pollution.
Fun stuff for sure.
you ar a lucky one! Your samyang Lens is far far better than my.
Really? Sad to hear that this lens also has different copies
What the point of looking at the lens resolution when the video is just 1080?
It's already a good for reference for support a decision. You can pixel peep the pictures yourself 😉
The Sony had much creamier bokeh even at f/1.8. Otherwise both excellent. Please test the eye / face autofocus on both. Compare. Thank you.
The eye af work excellent on both lenses, honestly I could not spot any difference in stills. In video the Samyang had a little more af noise, but it was still negligible. That is why I did not dedicate a particular spot in the video
Is there a huge difference comparing F1.4 against f1.8?
Köszi a videót!
This lens can convince me to buy A7C. Especially it have the custom 2 function can easy switch to the control of aperture.
how was the focusing sound for the samyang?
It was close to silent. In Af-c eye af it was totally silent, with Af-s spot it had a very quite sound, just like the GM
I was going for a batis 25 when I learn about this samyang...now I don't know if I should get the batis of this samy :)
I had the Batis as well. Did not compare them side by side, however by impression they are on the same level, in terms of image quality. CA is well handled on the batis, the Samyang is a touch sharper though. I wouldn't pay that much for the Batis, doesn't worth that much more
@@laszlobella-lighthunters Got the batis :), not new, used market around 700 usd is ok. I have two other batis so Why I decided that. I love it so far . Thanks
I can remember that you sold your GM recently. Is that means that you sticked with the Samyang at the end?
I currently sold both 😅
I will try something new and then I'll decide what to keep 😄
@@laszlobella-lighthunters what new means in your case?
@@ophoto.peterorban A new perspective (again) and the 35GM 😉
Great video it's very informative, but the audio is terrible.
Thank you and I have to fully agree with you. Had my lesson, will be better for the next one 😉
perfect review
Appreciate David, thanks a lot
Is this lens the same as the Samyang AF24mm f1.8 Sony FE?
Yes, it is indeed.
@@laszlobella-lighthunters Thanks. And i know you said the 24mm was designed for astrophotography, but do you know if there are any other Samyang lenses that have the infinity focus led?
For the time being this is the only lens with this feature. Hopefully they'll come out soon with other focal lengths
@@laszlobella-lighthunters 👍
I use 24 2.8 profile and I think it is good enough
This or the Viltrox!?
Have not tried the Viltrox yet, based on what I've seen from the Samyang, can't imagine that the Viltrox can be better ;)
Samyang is considerably better. Dustin Abbot compares the two a bit in his review.

voice is too low!
Thanks for the feedback, I'll work on the sound quality
6:20 the Sony 23mm F1.8 GM has the purple color at the highlight area.
Indeed it also has some CA, not strong, easy to fix but it has some
Thanks so much
Thank you too
Your audio needs to be normalized. I shouldn't have to crank my speakers up to hear you speak only to have my ears blown out from music in the same video.
A very common problem among youtubers. Hardly anybody has a clue how to balance the volume of spoken parts and background music. I mean, *no clue*.
how about focusing speed in daily use ?
Focusing is nearly identical both for photo and video. I could not spot any significant difference
Vol ++
Thank you, appreciate, now I have the tech for the better audio, coming up with more content soon!
Ár érték arányban abszolút nyerő a Samy
