I strongly considered the Samyang here but went with the Sony 24mm. The build quality and smaller size and better AF was the tipping point for me. I wanted a few small lenses that I wouldn't hesitate to carry so I can ACTUALLY SHOOT MORE. I have /had fast 1.4 glass and while great, I never grab unless I'm doing paid work and the camera and lenses sit and a smaller 1" compact camera goes. So wanted to change that. We'll see if if I start shooting more with my FF cameras.
This was a great review. Do you have a review between the Sony 40mm and the samyang 45mm? The Samyang is actually smaller and appears to have better focus breathing !
I had the Samyang, it was the only bad copy out of all my Samyang lenses… they were supposed to send me another copy for review, but dealing with a non native English speaking marketing team has been challenging and waiting on the lens.
Now I'm interested to see a comparision the Samyang f/2.8 to the Sony G version since they're similar size. I expect the Sony wins in most categories except the weight.
I have one Samyang AF ... a 12mm ... It does not have any focus problems and works as well as my Sony lenses in that regard. I generally prefer Sony lenses, but they really put a price premium on speed. The 50mm f1.8 is a very good lens and is priced reasonably ... most aren't
just keep in mind that this was an absolute stress test, one tiny light in the opposite side of the room with blackout curtains at night. ISO is around 12800 with 1/60 shutter speed f1.8, and underexposed at that level. With normal nighttime lighting, it works fine, and on a newer body like the siii, it also does fine in extreme low light. The purpose of the test is mostly to street it to get an idea of how solid the focus can acquire be, which translates into better acquisition of low contrast subjects and consistency. Sigma and Tamron have broke in these light levels for reference. I think the sony 28 and 50 also failed to acquire in these light levels despite wider apertures. Anyhow, thanks for watching.
@@CharlieVN Thanks for explaining the test parameters ... lot of lenses struggle in low light, understandably. I enjoyed your show ... was done well. Thanks.
For Sony a7III I would recommend checking your settings. Did you know for instance that turning on proxy file recording, shuts down eye focus? There are tons of settings which makes auto focus (face/eye detection) less reliable.
I'm testing the Sigma 24 f2 dg dn right now, and I'm thinking the samyang is slightly better based on my tests, samyang does not look as sexy, but definitely a high performer.
I should receive Samyang 24mm 1.8 tomorrow. Your test about autofocus - I would surely test it, because I mostly need it for low light and if it true that it cannot focus using phase detect in low light I will return it and will keep my Sony 20mm 1.8.
I have the Sony 24mm GM, I sometimes think about buying the Sony 24mm G, but the GM is so damn sharp. The 24mm GM & 35mm GM are actually not that big compared to other GM. I just bought the 50mm G f2.5 and I was surprised how sharp and small(like this Sony you are reviewing) it is.
not gonna lie, love the compact G lenses, also have the GM but tired of the size. the 24g is not really SY or GM level optics, but it sure is pleasant to use. I simply put it in the smallest bag and go. not a care in the world type of experience. I’ve been eyeing the 50 once I recover from holiday finances 😅
The morphing shot showing the lens size comparison when mounted on the camera is awesome! Thanks!

I find myself using the compact g more as well, I’ll have to do a lot of selling this year.

@@BrennFilm Can you provide a link where I can access these settings?
IMO Samyang is the best value FF 24mm with AF on the market.

but when it comes to low light shooting , like astro . Wider aperture is everthing IMO.
For sure
This is the type of lens comparison review I need to determine the best of the smaller primes at relatively affordable prices. Many thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Sigma 24 f2 is up next....... I just need more hours in a day

let me know how it turned out
Thanks for the video and great quality as always. Love watching your comparison videos. Audio was kind of acting funky at the end.
Hey great video, thanks! But… the collar on your shirt was bugging me so bad haha. I had to keep rewinding. Guess it ain’t all that bad!
😅 I've done that on accident a few times, and fixed it before, not sure how I missed it
Mr, how to make flare shape like a star ?
stop down to f16
@@CharlieVN thanks for answer 🤝
We're still comparing 1.8 to 2.8 in focus makes no sense 😬 great video tho
I bought the Samyang 24mm 1.8 and the CA is insane, sent back for a replacement because its unbelievably bad.
and was the replacement better?
@@tobiasjo1657 Nope!
@@JackWoodhams That's sad, thank you
Make a comparison video between Sony 20mm F1.8G vs Samyang 24mm F1.8
I'll see if I can get one, for the next one, it'll be compared to the sigma 24mm f2 😇

Real competitor of samy is 20 1.8 but its more like 19mm
Black people love anime too 😉
and camera lenses apparently 😄
sony 2.8 as sharp or sharper than the much brighter samyang. Sony the clear winner.
disappointed with the results of samyang, its a lens I really could do with trying , for now my aps-c 16mm sigma in super 35 wins above any of these
these new 24’s are quite good, different variations of excellence.
