  • This lens is definitely not a cheap lens, especially for these budget-friendly Canon Mirrorless Cameras. So how does it stack up? I share my thoughts and compare the Canon 32mm F1.4 to a more affordable lens in this mini-review.

    I have this lens, and although it is expensive, for photography it is by far the best lens I have for the Canon M system. The sharpness, colours and depth of field really make the images pop and look very 3D. When I look back at my photos, my favourites were taken all with this lens. If you’re a photographer, try and test one out. As I say, it is expensive though.

    Ah Zeek... do you have any idea how gratifying it is to have been watching your vids for a couple of years now? You have rapidly become the most reliable and authoritative source on the in-depth possibilities of the Canon M MILC system. Other channels have targeted content like for vloggers with the EOS M system. But your work both goes deep and shows how to go cheap. But yeah, the bad manual focus would probably be the STM motor, I think; because it is the latency of the electronic motor actuation (since it's not physical). It's one of the reasons that I never bought the STM nifty fifty. I don't mind the noise so much when using an off camera shotgun pointing forward. For that matter, the Yongnuo clone of it is even cheaper. $50 USD is just awesome. Thanks again for your work. Best regards to you and your loved ones.

    another great video zeek, the reason why sigma lens frame still fit in the speedbooster is because sigma want to maintain corner to corner sharpness.
    the corner for sigma lens are essentially the middle part as other lens are concern and that's why they are so bulky.
    your discovery of 30mm art sigma for the speedbooster change the game for many of us, essentially bringing two focal lengths for the price of one with high performance from we all know sigma.
    another one i found works with this method is from tokina 11-16mm
    i suspect many other sigma lens for crop sensor will work. mind if you do more experiment with other lens

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing :) The older Sigma 30mm ex f1.4 doesn't work with speedboosters apparently, only the art. I'm surprised the 11-16mm Tokina Works, I would think otherwise...
      The Sigma Art 30mm F1.4 Works perfect on 5D2 as well, no vignette :)

    Thanks for the review Zeek. Just as an aside, the Sigma lenses are all made in Japan whereas the Canon is made in Malaysia. The original Sigma 30 1.4 made cropped sensor lenses was what put Sigma back onto the path of righteousness. 20 years ago they were pretty hit and miss quality wise. Now they truly rock.

    Hi, thanks for the video. What about photos only, which one is sharper between the two lenses, adapted Sigma or native Canon?

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад +2

      For photos both are just about equal in sharpness, maybe the Sigma just a bit more. There is more difference in colour. I like the Canon Lens more for colour, but the Sigma when Adapter to the speedbooster gives more shallow depth of field and does look quite cinematic if that's a way of putting it.

  • @meatsim65
    @meatsim65 4 года назад +2

    Why not compare the direct competitor Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC-DN for EF-M? The sigma 30mm EF lens with speedbooster is great, but with a different effective field of view, it has a different purpose. If you compared shots without the speedbooster it would be a close match. Another nearly equivalent combo like the canon or yongnuo 50mm f1.8 EF with speedbooster would be interesting to compare as well. Keep up the good work!

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the suggestion 👍 I didn't have a purpose to buy the Sigma Ef-m version, because I had the EF Version which I could also use on my Full-frame camera. The sigma with the normal adapter focuses even quicker with the normal adapter, but I just wanted to show how simple focal length lens could be added to a speedbooster to create a full frame type look and at a cheaper price than the 32mm F1.4. Thanks!

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад +1

      Cheers Paul! I didn't even add any post sharpen to the 32mm. The Sigma is about the same in sharpness and in terms of colour, I actually prefer the Sigma with the Speedbooster or even other vintage glass. The build what is a deal breaker for me, and this lens feels quite cheap for the price.
      I just wanted to share my honest thoughts in case people were thinking about picking this up but weren't sure...

    I'd say form factor is on the side of the M lens, plus less bulk without the need of the booster. Speaking of which, is it the viltrox you're using? Wouldn't that automatically soften corners?

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  2 года назад

      Even with the booster, it still feels like a light package. The manual focus feel on the 32mm is awkward and laggy. I'm using the Viltrox M2 Speedbooster for EOS M Mount. I also have the Metabones EF to EOS M. The corners are fine stopped down to F5.6 / 8 as is with the 32mm.

      I wanted to like the Canon, but it doesn't feel.like an expenst lens in hand, at least with the Sigma EF 30mm F1.4 you can get up to F1.0 with the Speedbooster, and in general it's a fantastic lens for the price. Even the 18-35mm F1.8

    Sigma 30mm 1.4 is $200 cheaper than this.

    I'm assuming you're a video guy? If you're into photography then this lens is insanely sharp and on an M6 Mk II the images are indistinguishable from a 5Div or EOS R with expensive glass!
    Even in your video, the Sigma 30mm was definitely not as sharp. The Canon is sharp edge-to-edge and the price is cheap compared to what yoy have to pay for a FF lens to match it.

      Thanks for sharing 👍
      I started off in photography, but moved to Video. I do photos now and then though definitely not as much as I used to. The Canon 32mm F1.4 is extremely sharp, sharper than the Canon F1.2 L I had, but for video that isn't attractive for most people. For photography, I can say this lens is fantastically crisp, beautiful colours and will deliver excellent detail across the frame. But imagine taking a photo with a Helios lens. Cost peanuts and can set photos apart from the crowd. But I guess it depends on the image you're looking to achieve, that will determine your choice of lens, as well as budget 😎👍

      @@ZeekEOSZ I only just discovered your channel and I'm not too knowledgeable with video. I realise you shoot the EOS M cameras for the benefits Magic Lantern brings. Would an M5 be any good to you, knowing there isn't a version of Magic Lantern for that camera?
      My first ever DSLR was a Zenit and it had the Helios 58mm f/2 lens on it when I bought it. Great lens.

      Cool 👍
      For canon mirrorless, it's only available on the M and M2. The M50 is a working progress.

    The Sigma 30mm is a much better lens especially that it's cheaper

    Good review.
    Coud we use autofocus when we use ML in eos m? Even I choose AF+ML, the EF-M 22mm f2 cannot do autofocus when I half-press the shutter button.

      Yes you can! You have to enable in the Canon menu "AF while recording movie".

      In the ML Menu, #3 Customize Buttons, disable half-press configurations, that should help. You definitely can AF with Half press in video mode. I do it a lot.
