    Indian history gives way too much importance to Kings, Emperors, Queens and Warriors and politicians. No one learns about the ordinary men and women, peasants, merchants, poets, musicians, scholars or aristocrats. Ordinary people contribute just as much to history. We should be learning about life in cities and villages , evolution of laws and medicine, trade routes, cultural and religious movements, evolution of society and social evils and things that generally teach us moral lessons that will genuinely help us in the future. What is the point of learning about a King fighting a battle 1000 years ago ?

      The sad thing is,not much is written abt the common folk of that age. Writers and saints emphasized only on the lifestyles of kings, the community was spared from the conversation. On the other hand,in the west writers wrote vividly of the community. We dont have any such accounts here :'

      History writing by Indians had a new string of thought that came up in the 1980s, its known as Subaltern school of history. Its like a breath of fresh air, an attempt to look at history from the perspective of those who stood at the threshold of it but couldn't speak- common people.
      Of course it has moved beyond the domains of history into sociology and all. But if you do get a chance to read about Subaltern history, or get a chance to read a book that has a subaltern perspective, please do. Such things exist it's just that people aren't aware about it. I am a history student and thus know about the existence of such a thought, but sadly such things aren't easily discoverable by the lay man
      Hope this helps!

      @@srijanabaruah756 Historians actually know quite a bit about common life in India, more so medieval than ancient though. For example, we know the the taxes levied by many different rulers. We know the prices of food and other items and how cheap they were during times of surplus and how expensive they were during times of famine. We know about how people were dressed and what they kept in their houses. We know about how large cities were and how they were planned and organised. We do know about the ancient and medieval internal trade like the Uttarapath and the Dakshinapath. We know how well India was connected in the Continental and Maritime Silk roads. We know about how the economy functioned. We know about social evils like sati, purdah etc. We know about the laws people had to abide to what punishments were for breaching them. We know Ayurvedic medicine evolved with its contact with the medicines of Persia Greece and Western Europe. We know about how daily life played out in the Wadas and Havelis. We know about the evolution of the Indian education systems like Gurukal. We have the auto biographies of saints, poets and musicians like Purandaradasa, Chaitanya, Tansen and Ghalib. We know about the Buddhist, Bhakti and Sufi movements around India. We have a lot of information already on the history of commoners in India and all this information can easily be found online and more is being learnt everyday. For example, historians generally did not know what the wooden Imperial palaces of Vijayanagara looked like; Wikipedia and other sources always talked about how this information was unknown. However, now we have digital reconstructions of the Imperial Audience Hall of Hampi and we know that it was a larger version of the Audience Hall of the Tipu Sultan Summer Palace in Bengaluru. India was as good as China, Europe or Persia when it came to recording history but we still know a lot but instead we choose to merely glorify the deeds of Kings and ignore the history of ordinary people

    History tells me to respect Raja Ram Mohan Roy.. for eradicating Sati-Pratha and also Savitribai Phule who pioneered education for women in India. Basically these people are responsible for freedom and empowerment of women in the true sense but ironically we don't get to hear a lot about them. All I can say because it's male dominated country , and women's history has always been sidelined.

      @goldi1018 3 года назад

      @@aquahorns8995 I didn't mean to offend you. I apologize, if you felt like that. But it's not just from a "single statement", I could conjecture some parts of your standpoint to the specific Topic, because your comments are everywhere here, in this commentsection of the video. But if one part of the society asks (not even demands) for help, for the betterment of the society and many of them refuse (its just an example-> no empericim here), doesn't it goes against Humanitarianism? Ofcource changes can be made alone, but it's much more exhausting and takes more time. It's just funny, if you stand for Humanitarianism and say "if you want change, do it yourself" ( which is partly justefied) and don't acknowledge the other side, which doesn't shows any emphaty or helpfulness towards the people, who ask for help.
      And isn't it bold to assume, that I don't think many man are helping? Maybe meant: there is room for more people?
      I also apologize for my grammatical errors🙏🏽.

      @aquahorns8995 3 года назад

      @@goldi1018 I do acknowledge the "other side", of course I'm not saying that "Yeah whatever deal with your shit yourself", no. I guess that's the limitation of texting, instead of a live conversation, assumptions are made here unless someone agrees with you. You sound like a nice man.
      Also, it's really subjective regarding "room for more people". If you're talking about the fight against rapes, foeticides, harassment, and other bad things, then I'm sure most would always be in the struggle, except for the accused himself/herself. But if it's about the 'struggles' of modern day third wave of feminism, this is where it gets really subjective. I can only give my example. I'm totally not in support of topics like 'body shaming' , wage gap, and a lot of other topics, which you can find on this channel or even buzzfeed. But if it's against catcalling, or somw other truly genuine reasons like females not getting sanitation in rural areas, that's something I stand with.

    This! I have been reading history from some time, and now I understand why men seem to gloat over the fact their contribution is much higher in scale towards the progress of humanity. I do not belittle anyone's contribution, but I also feel the necessity to include more female role models.
    Girls shouldn't have to struggle to find good role models in their textbooks. And for this, we need to revise the textbooks and include more women.

    History isn't about the rulers and the powerful one's and even amidst this women never got the deserved representation in history this is not only disturbing but raises the question that should we consider the history we are studying now as legitimate original complete history? It's high time we perceive history more than just years and wars and names of kings. History has a lot to teach us if written and perceived in the right way.

    • @aquahorns8995

      History isn't meant to 'teach' you something. History simply tells you what happened in the past, and you draw your own conclusions and learn from that. India's history is harsh.

    What about child Khudiram (14 years) hanged by the British & children slaughtered in Jalianwala Bagh Massacre, 13-year-old Rani Gaidinliu of Zeliangrong tribe who at age 16, was sentenced to life imprisonment for leading a movement to drive out the colonial rulers from Manipur and Nagaland ? Who will acknowledge and document these tenderfoot soldiers of our freedom struggle? Alas, history should never be man or woman made but chronicled by conscious citizens.

      1. I never said it was completely omitted. I said 'hardly' which meant there was some part of them mentioned in school books.
      2. You gave your example of school text books but syllabus throughout India isn't same because the only women I have heard of are Rani Laxmi Bai and Razia sultan (fun fact- both of their paragraphs combined will not even make it into whole page)
      3. You said I'm giving misinformation but all I did was to say what I've read
      4. You called me a feminist. More appropriately you assumed me to be one! Which I'm not. The things I believe in, I don't think so can be categorised in a term.
