    Pretty wild to think that Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi and Bill Belichick were all coordinators with the Giants but all of them had to go elsewhere to get their first head coaching job.

    • @ThePumasboy300
      @ThePumasboy300 3 года назад +9

      To be fair, all those coaches went to shitty or new teams and made them the best
      (Landry to new Dallas franchise, Lombardi to GB which was nothing up to that point, and BB going to NE, and Cleveland before)

    • @nicknorris2540
      @nicknorris2540 3 года назад +9

      @@ThePumasboy300 That's kind of my point though. You give Belichick the '91 Giants and he still might be coaching there (of course some of that had to do with Parcells retiring after Belichick took the Browns job). I do understand that the Giants were a a championship contender in the late '50's and early '60's but if they hired either one of Lombardi or Landry during that time frame instead of letting them go to Green Bay and Dallas they most likely would not have struggled so bad from 1964 until the 1980's. My comment was mostly an observation and not a critique of the Giants because it would've been difficult to replace Howell at that point when he had already won an NFL championship and appeared in 2 more. Although the Giants did replace Howell after the 1960 season both Lombardi and Landry were already gone so it was bad timing on their part. I will say that I don't think it was coincidence that once both Lombardi and Landry were gone that the Giants went from 9-3 in 1958 (Lombardi's last year with the Gants) to 10-2 in 1959 (Landry's last year with the Giants) to 6-4-2 in 1960, and missing the playoffs.

      It's funny that the two coaches Jim Lee Howell employed would go on to achievements eclipsing their former boss and if you went to the common NFL stadium on any given Sunday if you mentioned the former by name you'd be bound to get an answer, "Who?"

He said Noll realized that O'Neil was learning a new position and would have liked to keep him, but it was Noll's first season and he was learning his position as well and couldn't keep O'Neil - but he did offer to recommend him to the Eagles staff (they had a lot of injuries and needed players) - but O'Neil realized that he was done - too many injuries - but he always appreciated Noll's kindness

    Never been a patriots fan but I admire how Coach Bill is a true student of the game. Granted he’s probably old enough to have watched a lot of these legends in the 60s and 70s but his knowledge in the history of football decades prior to that has to be a big contributing factor to his success as a coach. I’m biased to Coach Landry being the GOAT because im not only a lifelong Cowboys fan but he grew up in my hometown in Mission TX. He’s definitely been one of the best XOXOs coaches and it shows with his 4-3 defense being arguably the most popular scheme run today.

Look at the top 10 rushers all time, none of the defenses you mentioned are in the top 10. And additionally the top 10 passing offenses have all been inside the modern era i.e. since the year 2000, and also outside the teams you made a reference to. All do respect to all of these legendary men, but there's mountains of evidence to show that the football we see executed today was first orchestrated by Bill Walsh. A master of the short to intermediate game, occasionally could hurt you deep, and utilized running backs, fullbacks, tight ends in ways that no other coach had thought to do before. So when you see all these incredible athletes at non traditional positions running a myriad of routes, just remember that the originator of that level of creativity was William Ernest Walsh

    • @RDSports5
      @RDSports5 4 года назад +3

      @MadMax™ Paul Brown had Bill Walsh send in the plays he wanted, and used Bill for his genius. Then, when it came time to promote Bill, he instead hired someone else, and bad mouthed him to the rest of the league so much that he had to go coach at Stanford, which is where he showed his plays, his system worked in any environment. Eddie DeBartolo saw his talent, and gave him full control of the roster/coaching decisions. I'll say again, there have been MANY great coaches in this league, but modern football as we see it today with the variety of players used as receivers, and the mastery of the short to intermediate passing game were things that Bill Walsh originated. Several great former coaches have said this, from Mike Holmgren, Bill Belichick, Brian Billick, Andy Reid, and the list goes on.
