The story goes that his mom begged the Tulsa coach to give Wes a shot & promised that Wes would transform the Tulsa program. Supposedly the Tulsa HC said "I want to be the HC of the Dallas Cowboys, but it isn't going to happen."
Some of us who followed recruiting closely, thought he would walk-on at OU, but it turns out that they didn't even want him as a walk on.
Tech wouldn't even have a ship available for him if a JUCO DB didn't spur us on NSD to play with his brother at BC. The story goes is that Mike Leach said "If we offered you today, when do you think you decide?" To which Welker supposedly said something to the effect of "I'd commit right now!"
He played RB sparingly early on and would gain 4-7 yards on plays that our supposedly 2 top level RBs would get 0-1 yard on, which kept a lot of us from completely giving up on Leach's new O. One RB was recovering from an ACL injury & had a good 2001 season, but the other RB just didn't fit the system and transferred to Bama and started for them a season or two.
Early on, he took a lot of fair catches on the PR, but John Norman, who returned punts before Wes, told him he needs to stop doing that & BAM, 8 TDs later.
What I noticed about him at Tech & in the NFL, is that he is able to maintain his top speed longer than most guys. I don't think he ever had a timed 40 less than 4.7, but all those speedsters would fade behind him. They would rush up to him like a cheetah, then burn out & fade, but Wes never lost steam.
Sorry for the long post, but he is one of the top 10 all time Red Raiders in any sport.
