A video on the heights of running backs would be interesting. Majority of them are around 5'10" but then you have guys like Derrick Henry and Darren Sproles
I went to school with Jakeem “The Dream” Grant, there was no question that man was heading to the NFL. He used his size in the slot to disappear and is part of the reason Patrick Mahomes developed his crazy improv skills and short pass accuracy
Jakeem has been one of my favorite players since before he was even drafted, when I saw him take a running jump onto a six-foot platform. I hope he still has a couple good years left.
I remember when the Steeler drafted Weegie Thompson who was around 6’6”. They would loft balls up to him even when he was covered and hope he could out-rebound the defender. He certainly wasn’t dominant, but serviceable for a 4th rounder.
There are about 300 times more American men who are under 5'8" than who are at least 6'6". The short guys overpower the tall guys on sheer numbers. The fact that it is so close, shows what an advantage height is.
Baseball pitchers and basketball players tend to be tall, in football, hockey, and in the non-pitching element of baseball, height is much less important.
John Madden and Vin Scully were the voices of my childhood. Thanks for the memories John. And Vin, pls take your time and and stick around for a while longer. You may not be calling games anymore but it’s great to see and hear you around from time to time. Thank you for the memories, gentlemen.
Highest winning percentage in the LAST 90 YEARS. Above Shula. Above Lombardi. Only one guy above and it was 100 years ago. Strong argument as being most popular, by _both_ players and fans. So enigmatic that they named a football game after him. Was so beloved that people were interested in where he ate in cities before games. Or in the booth. Made Thanksgiving great again. Created awards in his name and NOBODY argued his choices. Talk about a man that could do not wrong. Made heroes and folk legends of less famous players just for making one historic play - with or without their helmet missing !
5:24 to add on to your 3rd point about tall guys normally playing TE or lineman, I think that's mainly a coaching thing. When a 6'5+ highschool player says he's a receiver, 90% of coaches tell them to bulk up and play TE. As someone who was 6'5 and 185 lbs my senior year of highschool (bulked up from 160 to 185 at my coach's request), I hated being slotted in as a blocker at TE instead of lining up on the outside as a primary receiving target and ended up quitting the team cause of that. The transition from highschool football to pickup games in college was super fun tho 😅
THANK you for showing 24 Everson Walls being beat on that outtro Carmichael touchdown, ha ha. Everson was a nice guy, a great guy, but I watched every play he made and he was beat over and over and over and over. That positioned him perfectly to intercept underthrown balls, more common than you think, as QB is hit or pressured. Most people only saw him on weekly highlights and thought he was great. Unfortunately he was beat more than any DB I've ever seen. BTW, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated - being beat by Dwight Clark making "The Catch".
A video about shortest and tallest offensive/defensive lineman would be dope. I was a 5'9 Guard in d1 (not anymore, injuries) and am curious if there's ever been any successful short but bulky guys in NFL history.

Jakeem Grant is one of my favorite Madden pickups in Fanchise mode. put him returning kicks for the first season and return them all to be the leader in kick return yards for some great XP for the next season and then becomes a decent WR for slants/deep routes
i got to talk to Carmichael a few years ago at an eagles game. such a great dude who absolutely loved football. he showed off his NFC champ ring too. the definition of one of a kind.
I honestly feel like extreme height or lack of height both have it's strengths and limitations where as a lot of players 6'1-6'3" have the best chance of succeeding/having the best of both PS Grant was traded when David Montgomery went down so Khalil Herbert didn't have to return kicks anymore to fill in at RB
Carmichael was unstoppable. As you've said, receivers could be hit a lot more in that era, but Carmichael had such arm length that he could often avoid contact at a distance that still afforded him separation. Of course, the 'throw high' strategy was huge as well. Truly a great NFL player.
I have been discussing this topic for years. I played corner when I was young and | was 5"9. I think receiver size is a response to corner size. Corner size is a response to receiver size in return. Both follow trends in football that last years. Smart coaches are the reason it happens. Because of this players cannot be compared from different eras. This applies to all positions in team sports really. Often teams that are not good in one era will adapt first and start trends in the following era. Shifty receivers will do well in an era where big corners started to work against big receivers. Understand? It is a never ending cycle that is the basis for successful strategic coaching like Belichick pulled off.
I remember Matt Jones made waves when he ran a 4.37 in the 40 yard dash at the combine. Converted QB or not, hard to not to take a chance on a guy like that; you can teach a guy to run routes and catch passes, but not how to be tall and fast. That situation in Jacksonville was pretty interesting for going against multiple stereotypes; the fast, athletic QB moved to WR was a white guy, while all three QBs on the roster were black guys who were not particularly athletic at all.
It was the Cowboy's Irvin and Harper duo that sent the average height up in the 90s. They dominated even the best corners and safeties throughout most of the decade.
I really like the vid but I feel like it should had been at 6’5 because there is a WHOLE BUNCH of great receivers from Calvin Johnson, malcom Floyd, Vincent Jackson, mike evans, placxico burress tall receivers got game. Would had been a bit more of a compelling vid but great work nonetheless. Your work is awesome 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Ifeanyi Momah was 6’7 and came into the NFL as an UDFA WR. Bounced on and off rosters for three seasons (Eagles, Browns & Lions) before converting to TE with the Cardinals. Only 96 yards and 3 receptions in his career.
Brandon Colman was a key piece to mark Ingram and kamaras success in there first year together because he was such a great blocker, that’s why they cut Willy snead because he was the third option but they didn’t need him anymore because Colman became the third option do to his blocking ability.
His blocking ability was very valuable and his catching ability was only average but average was all we need from him because he helped out so well in the running game.
now way in hell Tyreek Hill 5' 10" GTFOH - he's 5' 8" at best! This was so awesome and so short - I want more! You did too good of a job, as usual - this could be an hour long. Where is Steve Smith, Andre Reed, Antonio Brown, etc? The shorter guys are insanely productive.
Carmichael is insane from this clips. Also to me Kyle Pitts is basically a receiver and could fit this vid. I mean the dude has the look of one and can lineup outside. Also Jakeem Grant is a beast man! Super underrated
I hope he makes a video about Tight ends and running backs. It would be amazing if there was a 6’2 185 speedy RB. Like a track runner transitioning into football.
I think what these videos miss is the important information that what is average in the NFL is not average in the real world. Meaning that, there is a greater pool of the exceptionally small players to pick from than exceptionally tall. That means that if you are in the NFL and you are short, you have already proved yourself as a competitor at many points in your life. As opposed to the 6'6"+ players, who are generally rare in regular life. This means that likely, at many points in their life, they probably were able to take advantage of that even if they were not the one trying the hardest on the field or frankly, just not that good at the sport other than "being tall". Obviously everyone is good in the NFL, but I would bet you that most of the small guys had to work for it much harder to get there.
I don't know about your last line. But I agree that he should have talked about the average more, especially when he said that players plus/minus 3 inches off the average tend to be more rare. But if the average WR height was....say 6'0, then we should have been comparing 6'3 guys and 5'9 guys. Going to the extremes was fun too, however. Also, like you mentioned, seeing the representation of certain heights in the NFL relative to the general population would be cool!
I never played football the only sport I ever was interested in was Swim team but I fell in love with the game madden and that lead to me watching football so thank you John Madden for getting me into football.
Great video, that Carmichael is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of him and I’m 34. Also madden yes totally agree that’s one of the things that drew me to football I remember playing Madden 98 on Super Nintendo then 64 they had actual dialogue with Sumeral, then PlayStation with madden 03 and yes 04 was mike Vick on the cover great version of madden, first time you had training camp drills in the preseason to increase player attributes. Sooooooo much wow.
I lovvvvve drafting/signing tall recievers in videogames. 6'4, preferably 6'5+ WRs & TEs 😍 honestly i get excited for acquiring tall dudes for every position lol
I knew Carmichael would be on this video and as an Eagles' fan I already knew of him, but man I didn't know how special and unique he was!! An absoulte legend!!
Kris Durham was a guy I was trying to remember for years lol, because I remember watching a Lions game once and seeing Kris Durham and Megatron and I was just thinking about how crazy it was that their receivers were so huge.
Grant was a really awesome player in Miami, his hands just became a liability in what was supposed to be a stacked WR room. He'd catch everything one week and drop everything the next.
The thing about tall and big receivers is that the defense could always find a big and tall defender to cover them, so unless they got super speed as well, there's just not much to them. Finding a defender that's agile and shifty enough to keep up with a tiny speedster is hard, because they'd be one-trick ponies on that defense.
Solid vid, would've liked for the brief Madden tribute alone. He said it best at Summerall's funeral, ironically, "This is the third goodbye. It's the toughest."
Carmichael played several years in the 80’s as well, helping Philly to get to the 80/81 Super Bowl!! So, his most prolific years came end of 70’s and into the 80’s!!
I was like 10 and I asked my dad who the best coach in football was...he said "John Madden or Vince Lombardi take your pick." Madden 06 was my first Madden. I had 1 year if football under my belt and it helped me learn the game of football and my playbook
i knew Carmichael was great but did not know he popularized the wr screen. That is CRAZY, its insane he was even able to stay healthy. Kinda a super basic observation but them dudes got LONG LEGS like how did they never get their knees blown out etc.??? crazy
5:27 to add to this I’d say that if Harold Carmichael were around today he would definitely be a tight end, he just wouldn’t be a blocking tight end. Blocking has become less and less important for tight ends
A video about heights of cornerbacks would be good
I’m enjoying this series!
Everson Walls was covering Carmichael in the outro, dude's single season cowboys INT record about to be broken
Or running backs
That would be the first position that's "more short than tall", is Richard Sherman the tallest CB ever?

Also, like you mentioned, seeing the representation of certain heights in the NFL relative to the general population would be cool!
Another missed one is Tanner McEvoy at 6’6”. Didn’t do much in the league, but he had a touchdown or two I think.
Tyreek is 5’10” in cleats with a helmet maybe. He’s 5’8” otherwise. And still one of the best.
As a Miami fan I loved jakeem grant during his time in Miami and still rout for him whenever I see him
R.I.P. John Madden, I still play Madden 04 to this day! My personal favorite football game ever. Peace and love y'all 🤟
Jakeem's true height is and will forever be a mystery.
I never played football the only sport I ever was interested in was Swim team but I fell in love with the game madden and that lead to me watching football so thank you John Madden for getting me into football.
I went to LSU when Trindon Holliday was there. The guy was great. I loved to watch him next to Herman Johnson at LSU.
Great video, dude. I think you’re on to something with videos grading players production vs. physical attributes.
I like how you picked 6 foot 6 that happens to be very conveniently 1 inch higher than Megatron
Matt Jones former Arkansas QB and NFL WR is listed as 6’6”
I knew Carmichael would be on this video and as an Eagles' fan I already knew of him, but man I didn't know how special and unique he was!! An absoulte legend!!
Kris Durham was a guy I was trying to remember for years lol, because I remember watching a Lions game once and seeing Kris Durham and Megatron and I was just thinking about how crazy it was that their receivers were so huge.
1:01 Deonte Harris is raw
Darren Waller was a Wr before turning into a TE, he is 6’6
Grant was a really awesome player in Miami, his hands just became a liability in what was supposed to be a stacked WR room.
Running backs next? Love this series
happy new years thanks for the post 🙏
I know hes a rookie but Rondale Moore is a WR and is only 5' 7"
I say shorter b/c they are mostly faster but if there freak off nature like dk that are just hood at jump ball and route running and speed
Funny that you cut the top end at 6'-6", neglecting the best WR of all time... Calvin Johnson at 6'-5"
Solid vid, would've liked for the brief Madden tribute alone. He said it best at Summerall's funeral, ironically, "This is the third goodbye. It's the toughest."
Agudois is currently killing it in the cfl before getting injured and looked to be a future star in winnipeg
A KTO upload on NYE puts a smile on my face.
Carmichael played several years in the 80’s as well, helping Philly to get to the 80/81 Super Bowl!! So, his most prolific years came end of 70’s and into the 80’s!!
Cant wait for this video 🔥🔥
A video about the shortest and tallest linemen would be cool.
Keep a eye out for Johnny Wilson he about 6’7 and just transferred to Florida state
Looks like he gonna be a bballer
You should do heaviest Vs lightest linebackers
I was like 10 and I asked my dad who the best coach in football was...he said "John Madden or Vince Lombardi take your pick." Madden 06 was my first Madden. I had 1 year if football under my belt and it helped me learn the game of football and my playbook
That Carmichael dude looks like a beast👀 Thanks for the video KTO!
without a doubt a unicorn, amazing someone that tall and skinny wasnt plagued with injuries
i knew Carmichael was great but did not know he popularized the wr screen. That is CRAZY, its insane he was even able to stay healthy. Kinda a super basic observation but them dudes got LONG LEGS like how did they never get their knees blown out etc.??? crazy
I thought Steve Smith was going to be in this video. He might be the best wide receiver under 5'10.
Brandon Banks went from being an average returner for the Chiefs to it all star in the CFL God bless the bigger fields
In 1980, the Atlanta Falcons had a 5-4 receiver who played on special teams. His name was Reggie Smith
5:27 to add to this I’d say that if Harold Carmichael were around today he would definitely be a tight end, he just wouldn’t be a blocking tight end. Blocking has become less and less important for tight ends
Dude the Madden bit at the end got me. You could probably do an entire series of videos just on him.
Madden 04 was my first sports game as well. RIP legend
Great info, Thanks! I never heard of Harold Carmichael, dude was a beast!
