      @@defaultname9674 that's a really good point. I don't have a problem with them being the number one team here at all, they went undefeated and won the Super Bowl, then repeated as champions. But I would also say the undefeated team only won the Super Bowl 14-7, it would've been 17-0 if not for the Dolphins shooting themselves in the foot with a bad snap that lead to the Redskins scoring but it still happened and so it was 14-7. I think that mistake with the "they didn't play anybody" narrative and the no name defense identity they had hurts how ppl view them, whether that's fair or not Idk but I do think it's fair to question whether they could beat some of the other really great teams like the 84 or 89 49ers or the 85 Bears, or even the 07 undefeated regular season Patriots that lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl. And I really don't know if they could beat any one of those teams, not in my opinion anyway but that's my opinion. But either way, I do believe they should have the #1 spot on this list bc they played in 3 straight Super Bowls, going 2-1, going undefeated in the second season while winning the Super Bowl, then winning the Super Bowl again the following season.

    • @gordonshumway5933
      @gordonshumway5933 4 года назад +2

      @@defaultname9674 I meant to respond awhile back, Idk why I didn't but a like brought me back to the post now. Anyway, I agree 100% about the 73 Dolphins, they had the great 72 season and repeated likely getting everybodys best in 73 and beat up a Bud Grant coached Vikings team 24-7, that also went to multiple Super Bowls with a bunch of HOF's on both sides of the ball. The 71 team lost to a returning Cowboys team that had lost the 70 Super Bowl and that counts for something too, it certainly would seem to give Dallas an edge. One on one I'd take 73 over 72, but the undefeated season makes that team look better imo and the 73 team losing 2 games makes them look worse but I'd still take 73, while still giving 72 the top spot here. And I think the early 70s Dolphins despite getting the top spot are still one of the most underrated teams ever, maybe second only to those early 90s Bills teams who get no respect bc they never won the SB, which isn't fair bc they went to four in a row losing to the Giants and Redskins who already were SB championship teams then twice to an eventual three time championship Cowboys dynasty. Idk exact three year streaks that would match that Dolphins team, not with SB wins to go with it. I think if Montana doesn't go down against the Giants the 49ers may have won three straight, but that's only a what if and the first of that streak was a six loss team beating the Bengals in the SB. Another what if for me is if the Giants didn't lose to the Patriots in the final game of the undefeated season, if they don't play in the regular season, I don't believe the Giants win that SB.

      @Harry Engel Its a toss up. The 85 patriots had a slightly better overall offense but committed more penalties and the broncos had a better defense yardage wise. Both teams are actually pretty equal, i'd say its a toss up, the patriots were more prone to make mistakes but their defense was much better at getting turnovers. In their playoff run they got 18(!!!) turnovers over 4 games, while the broncos got 5 over 3 games (none in the sb).

      You can live with that? I can't because the 1989 49ers deserve #1 because they had the most dominating playoff run in NFL History. The 1984 49ers deserve #2 because they were one BS penalty away from a perfect season, losing one reg season game to the Steelers by 3 pts on a controversial penalty. 1989 49ers #5 1984 49ers #4 I don't think so!
      USA Today Top 100 Greatest Teams of All Time has the 1984 49ers #2 and I can live with that.

Troy, Emmitt, Irvin, Novacek, Moose Johnson, all in their prime. One of the most dominate OL in the history of the NFL. The number one defense in the NFL that year they were super deep and it was the youngest team in the NFL meaning they were fast and athletic and in their primes. And for some inane reason they managed to avoid the Raiders, who practically owned them.

      I don’t know man. Those type of hypothetical scenarios can never keep all variables the same, with not only those 2 teams but the whole league. New England could have certainly won either of those years but it’s certainly not a given. Whose to say the Chargers with Manning could have somehow changed the playoff matchups and advantages with Manning. Maybe New England beats or loses to another NFC team. Or Maybe Rivers and the Giants are the favorites. Either way I think both of those QBs are Hall of Famers. It will be a close vote though.

The 84 team outscored their opponents by 248 points in the regular season compared to the 89 team who outscored their opponents by 189 and the almighty 85 Bears who outscored their opponents by 258. And that 84 defense shutout their playoff opponents in 9 outta 12 quarters. But the 89 team was all time dominant in the playoffs as defending SB champs, so I get the argument. ’72 Dolphins faced a strength of schedule of below .350. Nowadays it’s pretty much impossible to be assigned one below .450. Their schedule was three times farther from .500 than is even possible to get nowadays. They also won six games by less than a TD. Really good team, far from the best ever.

    The differences between the top 5 teams is so small you almost can't see them. I'm from Chicago so you know who gets my vote for #1, especially since half the Dolphins schedule was against teams with losing records. Plus, even though Ryan deserves a ton of credit, he's the one that lost that game to Miami by refusing to adjust at halftime to have better pass coverage, as Ditka suggested to him in the locker room at the half.

    With all due respect to the 1972 Dolphins, the 1989 49ers are the greatest, most talented, most utterly DOMINANT football team ever assembled. When you score almost 28 pts/game, allow less than 16 per game, go 15-1, then enter the playoffs by rattling off victories of 41-13, 30-3, before ANNIHILATING the #1 defense in football that year (Broncos allowed 14.1 pts/game in the regular season) 55-10...………………..…….. I thought they'd put one of the 9ers at 1. For me though, I put '85 Bears at 1, '72 Dolphins at 2, and move the '07 Pats to 3 because even though they lost the Super Bowl, that is the complete and dominant team ever, but they didn't bring the chip home. I don't mind the Fins at 1 and Bears at 2 though, both were dominant teams.
