      I noticed this also. I almost bought them but without the ability to have the display in a fixed location instead of following the wearer's vision it was a no go for me. Later, when normal people started reviewing them I found out they were horrible for computer use so I'm glad I held off.

    I own a pair of the Xreal air 1.Really great for traveling. I throw them on with a pair of noise canceling headphones on a plane and game or watch movies in my own personal theater. Its a great experience. At home I use them mostly in bed, watching anime or gaming a little bit just before bed in the dark. Much nicer than being bound to the living room and it is an experience that can go to hotels and such with me.

    Hey Techdweeb! Thanks for this review, it's honestly incredibly helpful as I had been considering getting a pair of these, but you've raised some valid points that have me now reconsidering if they really will be something I can or want to use, especially when discussing the big elephant in the vr/ar room of motion sickness (something I tend to suffer from). I think I'll probably skip these but it's definitely really cool technology that I'm very interested in seeing where it goes. Maybe I'll even get something like this down the road once they've ironed out a lot of the early adoption issues. Looking forward to your next informative and entertaining review of awesome tech!

    Good morning TD! Delightful as always 🙂 I'm really conflicted on monitor glasses in general, but hey, keep letting us know about the stuff that comes your way. I see the advantage of private viewing while traveling, but that isn't very tempting for me. VR is cool, but seems to require lots of money and a Faustian deal with a mega-corporation. I gave away my Oculus Go when it required a Facebook sign-in. If the tech gets cheap enough someday I could see a Roku, or something like it, that comes with two pairs (with the option to buy more) for a shared big TV experience in a small apartment. But that is a long way off too. I'll keep watching the tech, but, at this point, it isn't solving any problems I have, at a price I'm willing to pay.

    I am really interested in the device and the future of them. Glad you included talk about prescription lenses as these types of devices seem to go to reviewers that either have perfect vision or wear contact lenses using them. Have not watched the whole video yet, but a little PSA as a customer:
    If you buy these be prepared for one of the worst software support on any tech product, these guys have taken months and months to update their nebula for Windows and it only works reasonably well if you have a powerful Nvidia graphics card. Nebula for android drains your phone's battery in 2 hours and even if you have a samsung, dex drains it in 3 and a half.
    I wouldn't recommend using them without nebula for any other phone brand cause they keep the main screen on at all times.
    I would ONLY recommend these if all you want is the best, largest portable OLED TV on the market right now. As a screen, yes it is THAT good, but the 3D or AR functionality is terrible. And they're not making the SDK available for developers, so you have to rely on them for updates and extra functionality.

Protips if you have lots of cash, the xreal Beam will let you sideload apps now. Also while it's a competitor, the Rokid Station (A google TV dongle with battery made for AR glasses) works with the glasses. You just have to change the glasses to HDMI mode (hold the brightness button) or the sound won't work.

    The "xreal" truth is : it all *depends* on how tech savvy the user is.
    The beam can be "jailbroken" and it adds another layer of possibilities.
    The beam also moves the image in the screens on the horizontal parallax to simulate depth, literally taking advantage of stereo vision and it's the reason why you perceive the virtual screen as near or far away.
    With various apps on linux/ windows/mac , the glasses also become a VR headset with head tracking and SBS 3D capabilities.
    The real thing that turns me off is the extremely small FOV. I have both the glasses and the beam and I'm having a blast. Yet again, the FOV is what makes the experience less enjoyable overall.
    It can be modded though, but I have yet to make custom lenses just for that.
    What's really frustrating is how poorly made the beam is and how any freaking smartphone could actually have the same functionality the beam has and all it takes is their Eva app (installed in the beam, which is just a stupid android SBC with an extremely underpowered CPU). *That* and the absurd amount of cables and usb-c hubs you gotta buy/try before finding those who *actually* deliver alt-mode, dock and charging, which *cannot be done* on a single device since two are required, given how bad the beam is in regards to the way they have separated data/video-in/video-out/audio-out lines and charging lines on the USB-C ports.
    Anyway, personally, I have had *zero issues* with audio lag; it's definitely something in your setup.
    For me though, *it is* a game changer. I've replaced the monitor on my main PC with these glasses. With more users joining, more tutorials and possibly with a community of modders, this thing can become a huge hit.

    The first time I used VR, it was a samsung thing where you put the phone in a device, like a pro Google cardbaord. The first thing I thought is this was going to replace TV's and computer monitors. So I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Their new one will have cameras on it so you can fix the monitor in space so it acts like a real TV or monitor and that will advance it enough for me to adopt it. I'll just wait for their second version of those glasses to be safe. Also, it will need to be good enough for general computer use so I can get rid of my two computer monitors. So it might be a few more years. . .

    Ok TechDweeb that was a great video, but I got a few corrections/observations about your points:
    1. The switch is not compatible, you have to use it docked for it to work and at that point why would you even bother.
    2. You never touched on the Nebula App, which is ok, but it adds a bit of extra AR space functionality with some android devices (i guess that's why, becaause the list of supported devices is tiny)
    3. You said in the video that the prescription glasses cut off your screen, but that may be solved by adjusting the angle of the glasses, you can just push the arms of the glassses up or down to adjust the "angle of attack" so to speak.
    4. You said the Air2 Pro has "local dimming" but it definitely doesn't, the screens are OLED so they don't need local dimming. What you meant to say is they have electrocromic glass, which can self darken to make the screen more visible.
    5. As for the face-locked screen causing motion sickness, all I would say is you just get used to moving your pupils instead of your whole head around, and once you do, it is really cool for games and pretty much everything.
    As a portable screen I love the Nreal Air, but as a multi monitor productivity boosting device it falls flat.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  5 месяцев назад +1

      Good points.
      1. It's compatible if you use the beam. Not directly into the glasses.

I ask because the beam caps framerate at 72hz and i just have to have 120hz with these glasses as they are capable of that but can't reqch ut because the beam limits their framerate. I ditched the Beam for now. It kept glitching and the battery life... uhg... The body anchor is hard to describe - it is disappointing the "139" screen stays put but is completely cut off on the sides top/bottom when you look around. The only way to relieve this is too shrink the screen down and don't move you head around very much. Just seems like a feature that could be majorly improved and not worth messing around the clunky, slow, HOT, Beam - I LOVE the glasses - don't get me wrong. I just like the ease of plugging them directly into my iphone and having alight set up with the magic floating screen that I cannot adjust (cough... make and IOS app for setting XREAL please!).

    Quick question, how's the scaling when you plug in your Steam Deck with graphic heavy games. When you send the signal to a larger display, it typically doesn't look nearly as good as when compressed to the SD's screen size. I'm wondering if the glasses look equally terrible when scaling up games like Baldur's Gate 3, etc.
    Thanks for the critical review. The only other review I watched that contained honest critiques was from someone who bought them himself, and he had some things to say about that dongle (including a terrible whine from the fan).

      Any device with USBC video out will work with the just the glasses. They treat USBC video sources as a standard 1080p source. So if you just want the glasses without the Beam, you're good.
      The problem comes when combining the glasses and the Beam with external devices. The Beam is a battery bank, and also a media player, and also a controller for the screen, so sometimes you'll plug in a device to the beam and it'll get detected as a battery, or as a media player, rather than a monitor. And there's nothing you can do to switch that. In those cases I used an HDMI dongle, and that worked, however that introduces some weird problems with devices that don't use a standard 1080p video signal for their output. I couldn't get any of my retro handhelds to work like that.
      Long story short, the Odin 2 SHOULD be fine, but I can't test it for you because I don't have one on hand.

Also, too if the technology gets even more perfected with this new product at the very end, hopefully it fixes some issues from the older that’s already out and if not then, hopefully these things still get use so then there’s more encouragement to perfect the technology even further🤩

      It's basic novelty at this point hence the price you have to remember the market for this type of stuff is not there now same with vr and foldable phones as time goes on the technology will advance and get more affordable at the same time as has happened with tech for most of history

    • @azenyr
      @azenyr 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@shade6997 i understand all of that but having the basic functions behind an additional $149 just so they can say the glasses are a much lower price is a stupid anti consumer move. I'd rather see them including the additional thing in the box with the glasses and selling the glasses at a bigger price than this "starting at" BS that requires extra, expensive sell ups to be usable. Or just have that screen resize functionality in the glasses themselves. I feel like they are just trying very hard ti justify the additional purchase. Just like Apple selling $2000 laptops but having just 8GB of RAM so they can say "starts at just X price" knowing everyone will upgrade the ram to the next tier because the "starting at" model is unusable. Yes you can use them without the additional sell up but it's a damn bad experience.
      At the end of the day, they removed an extremely basic and necessary feature (resizing the screen) and moved it to an external $149 accessory. That's an 4ss move in my opinion. Because if I JUST want the resizing option I have to pay those $149 and get features I don't care about. • @azenyr
      @azenyr 5 месяцев назад

      @@TechDweeb yes but if you just want to resize the screen you have to buy a whole $149 product. That's the thing. Screen resizing could very well be on the glasses themselves. Imagine if your PC monitor had an additional $149 device that you had to buy to be able to change the monitor brightness (and a bunch more features that you didn't care about). That's how it feels.
