Albert Bouchard and his wife (?) Caryn wrote this song. Albert was bound to throw in some jazz interludes. He's a jazz drummer at heart.
This is the kind of song where a bunch of musicians came together and threw in their own ingredients. They added a saxophone player, Mark Rivera to the ensemble, even though it all sounded like a full-on jazz band. It's one of BOC's coolest deep cuts. Makes me think they were trying on a Robert Fripp style arrangement back and forth with the hard rock theme breaking into jazz jamming. Had to be a lot of fun recording.
Here's a song from the old days to try on: "Baby Ice Dog," one of my favorites from Tyranny & Mutation.

Absolutely amazing band and love all of their stuff. When I first heard this song, my jaw dropped at the jazzy interludes, but I came to love it and all of its quirkiness.

Love this song and album! When I first heard Megadeth, some of their riffs reminded me of the heavy riff in this song. BOC were the kings of sci-fi heavy metal in the early 80's. Black Blade and Lips in the Hills are great from this album too.

How did I miss this reaction back in January? Now subscribed because of this. Thank you.
You can never underestimate Blue Oyster Cult and their many sounds and abilities. No band was quite like them and probably never will be again. No album sounded the same as their last and all songs within the album sounded different than the others.

I've seen these guys 8 times. In 2006 Eric Bloom had me come back stage to get autographs. Earlier, we talked about music and baseball during their break. It was an outdoor show with other bands in Council Bluffs iowa Amphitheater. They have been around since the early 70s. Their music neo metallic with tons of layers sounds.

First time to watch you. Your eyebrows said it all. I was wondering what you were going to do when that sax came in and then the classical piano riffs. I know this song like the back of my hand. I think it's songs like this that set the bar so high, that I just expect everyone else to at least try to reach that bar again and few know it exists. This song is an example of great storytelling skills, which I wonder if you were listening to the words because I did not see you reading them... and it's an example of creative musicianship at its finest. Your reaction was beautiful. I enjoyed this. Being a drummer, you repeated that rock beat well, for hearing it just once. I hope you went back and listened to this a few more times. Those saxophone note runs, sound fading out down low and the breath control used as that musician takes the notes up to a high peak, are just incredible!
Now try a song by Kansas, 'Magnum Opus'.

Not my fave from the Cult, although I always thought the jazz transition was.......interesting. "Lips In The Hills" is a flat out rocker. Looking for a "vampire love song"? "I Love The Night"(original from 1977's "Spectres"). Editing, because I forgot to mention, "Shooting Shark" from their 1983 "The Revolution By Night" has some smooth sax too. Not as jazzy as this, but smooth.

Great reaction! I am glad and impressed that you have the introspect to choose some of the under the radar BOC tunes.. Another one to feature is "Hot Rails to Hell", possibly one of the first speed metal songs ever.. it is the lead up song to "7 Diz-Busters", which you've reacted to previously.. Thanks.

The Cultosaurus Erectus lp was a much needed attempt to go back to the heavier balls out rock that they mostly avoided on the previous lp Mirrors, which was largely awful by BOC previous standards. Bringing Martin Birch in to produce it was a smart move. A good comeback lp.
