The SC-Campground Gig Wedding

- The Sound Couple heads off in the Ford van to support a wedding celebration at a camp ground! In the heart of the fall colors, we provide production for the ceremony and band. With some snow accumulation just a few days before, we felt they were very lucky to be able to pull this off!
As temperatures dipped into the 40's, we preferred to be outside, but the inside option wouldn't have been as challenging as we would have initially thought. The space was modernized and well equipped, but you should be a bit concerned anytime you know you will be gigging in a wooded campground!
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16
Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.
Thanks bart and Stacey, I found the way to translate into Italian. I always follow you with joy. Excellent technical ideas and a lot of humanity.
Thanks Paolo! We are glad you were able to figure out a way that works for you. We just don't understand the inability for RUclips to manage subtitles in other languages better than they appear to. We have looked into it and it's confusing.
what a beautiful location .....btw....the video is now one month old....miss you guys ;) the band is good, nice sound brad. the bass player and drummer are running tight ship there
Thank you! We are still documenting every gig we do, so plenty more to come! We are hoping to get a new one out here as soon as we can, but these gigs keep getting in the way! Ha ha!
@@thesoundcouple great,
hi bart and stacey i,m from the netherlands and i like your video's. I'm a singer and do it all alone on stage, but its nice to see how much work you have with a whole band and i'm verry interterested in your CDL sound system. I use Dynacord Corus evalution 15.2 and 1.18 but maybe one day i need to go on the CDL presonus system. now you have the 12 inch and the new 10 inch i like a compair video
thanks allot and keep on going
Thanks for watching! Yes, we plan on doing a comparison video soon!
As always, a big “Thank You!” to The Sound Couple for sharing this gig with us.
A campground wedding in the chilly fall outdoors in Minnesota: what an experience! And, still gigging with the classic van.
Strictly to help me remember the lessons in this gig, I note these learning points:
1. It is always great to see the drink sliders employed at the various venues.
2. One aspect of this venue: lots of room to set up. This allows The Sound Couple to vary the layout of the monitors.
3. I always appreciate it when Bart shows us exactly how he configures the mixing software. Each step is so important.
4. On to the ceremony: setting up outdoors, in the midst of trees, offers an interesting venue. Sound check at the ceremony site proceeds, even with a nearby horseshoe match-wow!
5. Bart’s tip: Always download music from whatever music provider is used. That way if the connection to the Internet fails, such failure doesn’t affect the availability of the music.
6. As has become all too often: no sound check. At least The Sound Couple always-always-does a thorough line check.
7. Quite interesting to see band members, guests, and The Sound Couple bundled up against the fall Minnesota chill.
8. Bart shows us the older mics he had repaired. Buying quality mics from a very reputable manufacturer that continues to provide service is golden.
9. Power is so important. Bart’s summary toward the end of the video illustrating the number of circuits he had to use for this gig illustrates the kind of flexibility that a production company must employ.
10. The hearty Minnesotans rock into the night. No loss of energy for this group-even as The Sound Couple loads out, the party continues.
I cannot begin to adequately express how much I appreciate Bart and Stacy, along with their willingness to share their gigs with us. A giant salute to The Sound Couple and their continued quest for excellence.
Hi Dean - Thanks again for your summary....We were not sure what you were going to think about where the location of the band was...that wasn't our call! We always seem to pull out something of value which can be surprising to us...so thank you for your insights in sharing. We are heading into another busy stretch of gigs, but we have one more outdoor show to share with everyone in 2022 that we are working on next! We are excited to share some bands with insane talent!
Like you Bart, I far prefer clip-on mic's. Some of the horn players I work with bring their own microphones (typically they bring SM57s) but for the most part they bring clip-ons. They're much easier to work with for me too. What is handy is companies like Thomann do some of their own branded microphones for horns; I don't own a set myself, but a friend does and they're brilliant for what they cost.
We recently purchased SGPro wireless clip ons...these are very impressive for the money and have had no drop outs. We have also upgraded to newer AKG ATM350's wired which are nice. With the older AKG's discussed here - we were running into situations where the short necked ones were picking up too much instrument noise.
Hi Bart and stacey, your videos are great. I look at it with great pleasure. Speaking of cold last Wednesday was king's night in the Netherlands. that is the night before our king's birthday. This year it was seriously cold I had to scrape the ice off my car window before we could drive home. The evening with a tent full of people was doable, but after that it quickly became very cold. but hey, it was a great party. I look forward to your next adventure. Greetings from Patrick from the Netherlands. Keep warm😅
Thanks for sharing Patrick! We have another one in the works!
Bart i here you out of breath you too young buddy. Nice work again.
LOL! Thanks....just added that for effect!
Use use those Donner IEM amps too! I love them! Many musicians bought them after using mine at a gig!
The only concern is the rechargeable battery...but assuming they are similar to our DMX, they still work great!
thanks Bart ande Stacey, always something happening ,a joy to follow you're videos.A.
Thank you! We will have another one posted shortly!
Finally, always eagerly awaiting your wonderful videos. Keep it up. Greetings from the Netherlands
😄 it’s nice to know you’ve been missed!
Now the weather is heating up, i hope there are more funny gigs outside 🙂At our Theater we have a nice terrace with an outside bar. Where we often have small bands play in the summer, sometimes duets / trios. Maybe even a bigger band this year. I always look forward to that time of year. People cozy on the terrace eating / drinking a bit while having fun.
Because we have quite a lot of regular visitors, there are sometimes some who always spontaneously offer help when i'm tearing down the gear. That's really fun the tear down is done in 15/20 minutes 🙂
Sound like a nice time! We are still trying to warm up here, but some outdoor will soon be happening for us as well. Thanks for sharing!
"five zero or one five?" is something I always have to ask lol English is so weird. Great episode! The planner's energy really does set the mood for the day.
Wedding planners can truly make the difference in setting the mood for the day!
The audio quality is top notch ❤
Thank you! Appreciate that!
@@thesoundcouple really good sound what i hear on my beyerdynamics ;)
@@p.m-audio Thank you! It's the sound recorded from our iPhones and they do a nice job!
Awesome stuff
Thanks!
Great drummer in that band!
Yes....but wait to you see him on the next video!
i like the old van....👍
It does have a price! LOL!
you 2 are awsome I always learn something new with your videos thank you.
Thank you for letting know we are on the right track!
I'm not too familiar with the new pre-Sonus stuff but that routing seems like it's stretched across multiple tabs. I'm familiar with the Behringer stuff and the phantoms stays with the input. But it can also I think be copied assuming you move it to an input that supports phantom. You're making me want to dig out a mixer and check.
Yep it follows the input I guess maybe they don't want you to copy phantom onto a channel that shouldn't have it and make you enable it if you absolutely need it.
An new old video. October? Sheesh.
That drummer was on point all night long. 🤘🏽
Isn't it nice to know there is plenty more to come? Videos take a lot of time to make and we have more gigs to share than we can keep up with...but we get them out as quickly as we can!
You guys always make great videos. Y’all should take as much time as you need to do it right. Keep it going! :)
Thank you Bart for showing us your Universal Control setup. I don’t have a digital snake myself, yet lol.
You're welcome....some would say (including myself), wouldn't an analog patch be faster (or easier)? Arguably yes in some cases, but the flexibility in digital routing is nice....you just got keep things straight in your head.

Gratias tibi!
I could totally see a few blizzard hypno beams in your setup. They’re only $630, and they have really good specs.
Thanks for the suggestion... will have to check them out!
It must be very cold in this place, but congratulations on the job.
Thanks! We live in Minnesota which is a cold weather state....so yes, this time of year it starts to get very cold!
Hermoso lugar saludos desde uruguay muy linda equipación
¡Gracias por tomarse el tiempo de mirar!
Why don't you guys have moving lights and disco lights that move around and change colors throughout the parties
We do have moving lights, but that comes out when the budget allows for it!
"Another One!"....Great video stepping through such an unorthodox event. I know power was on hand for the ceremony, but why your decision on not using a battery-powered "Set-Up" for the ceremony??? Keep Up the great work. And you've got other "Sound Couples" out here conquering the rigors of mobile sound!
Glad to hear we have partners in crime!
We did not have our new battery powered option at this time… but would have totally used it!
Good sound quality and mix , you have great musician's in Minnesota to work with what species of polar bear are they. Thanks from Righteous Medicine in Colorado outdoor gigs rule. Take care
Thank you...you won't get it arguments here...the quality of musicians in this area I think is pretty amazing. Sometimes it bums me out how the average local person can't comprehend how lucky we are....and it's out of town guests are the ones that notice. Appreciate you watching!
This is a beautiful location 😀
What draws you to the Presonus equipment, as opposed to EV, Yamaha, QSC, etc?
Any advice you can impart for getting gigs? I've been struggling quite a bit to find and land them since Covid restrictions eased and things have opened more and more (I live in the Seattle area, which is, of course, different from Minnesota). I lost at least 2 years of booked events when Covid hit (as I'm sure most everyone did) and have had a lot of trouble getting them back, even from people with whom I worked for many years.
We started with PreSonus when we went digital. For the time, the original StudioLives were a good choice. Then they were the first in offering a robust rack mixer which once we started using that, we couldn't go back. With their ecosystem expanding into the Series 3, we stuck with it.
That's rough that the gigs are hard to come by. That's a reminder to us that it wouldn't take much for us to be in the same boat, but thankfully, we have a couple key contacts that provide us a stream of steady work sprinkled in with other people that we have known over the years that provide referrals or occasionally need production. I would try to understand what changed with your existing relationships...did they go with someone else? If so, why? Then it's on to try to make some other contacts...For example, we used to get some referrals from a production company in which the gigs were not big enough for them, so they would send them our way!
Do you know what is the table you use for the mixer since I am trying to find one since my table is not strong enough to hold my gear on top since it almost snapped in half so I am looking for a new table 😢

Where is the other van?
Our primary van was in the body shop getting some rust repair done. We have it back now and it looks great! The prices of these vehicles have gone up quite a bit so we decided to invest in our van to make sure it will be looking good for a few more years!
Hi Bart, I just wondering how much your rental fee for your gear? I mean for this video.
Our rates can vary depending on the event...for this particular gig, we are part of the musician pool and are offered to accept or decline the offer. We really can't get more specific than that in the comments, but you can contact us if you want more info.
Missing a new video. Are you busy or have no bookings?
We have been busy....but definitely have more in the works. Thanks for checking in!
What mixer and mics did you use for the ceremony?
We used our backup PreSonus 32r mixer.
Hey Bart, I would love to get your take on coupling subs together in the center? Thanks as always
Well.....I do think you gain some efficiencies and coverage. Equally, if not more important, we need to consider logistics and aesthetics. The mains are designed to mount over the subs and be nice and secure using an efficient footprint. For many of the gigs we do, I couldn't imagine plopping subs in the middle on the dance floor with two sets of trees not only for lighting, but now the speakers as well on each side of the stage. So we tend to not go this route unless we need the extra horsepower on the low-end. Most of these type gigs, we can go under the stage with them.
@@thesoundcouple great answer, ty
What brand of speakers you uses for monitors
Those are PreSonus 328ai's. They are fantastic speakers, but unfortunately discontinued.
I love your vedios. But it seems it s getting longer and longer between them.???
Hi Robert - You are correct, it's taking us a bit longer than we like to get a video out! We are working on it so hang in there with us!
Hey Bart, i’m running into an issue with my 32R. When doing Aux fed subs, the max output is limited to 18 dbu while my subs can go to 24dbu. Thats quite the difference. This means when pushing full throttle, the subs still arent peaking (not even a little) so lots of loss here.. any idea on how to work around?
You could try adding additional gain via the aux’s compressor gain.
Bart and Stacey. I’m a DJ for over 25 years and a bass player In several bands in my lifetime. I absolutely love your videos, and watch everyone from start to end. However, every time I watch you set up a full sound system for your ceremonies it drives me crazy wondering why you are not employing battery, powered speakers and wireless mic receivers at the speaker. Watching you both struggling to push that cart through the leaves to your set up point made me have to write. I do a ceremony almost every weekend, and there is so much great equipment nowadays that sound amazing, especially when it’s just recorded music and voice you’re trying to amplify. My latest and greatest is the Everse 8 system by Electrovoice. Couple a set of those on sticks with a Sennheiser receiver pack on each tuned to the microphone, and you have a fantastic sounding fully battery powered system that goes up and down in a minute. Please put me out of my misery and explain why you do not make the step to this type of ceremony system.
Completely agree...probably the biggest reason is using equipment that can be deployed to do multiple jobs, which can lead to it not being the "easiest" or efficient for every task but maximizes it's use and ROI. For example, our ceremony set-up is using our back up mixer and speaker monitors we already carry with us. Investing in gear for specialized use makes that specific task easier, but you need to know you need it, remember to bring it, it takes up additional space in the truck, and then you need to store it when not in use. There is a turning point where you do enough of something where it makes sense and maybe we have crossed that line, but it would be easier pill to swallow if that line item would have a larger $$ attached to it....truth is, we don't get much to provide this service. We have made some big investments in the past few months to help us be more efficient at related tasks, but a "ceremony" rig was put on hold for now.
@@thesoundcouple Perfect explanation that makes perfect sense. Certainly the cost factor cannot be overlooked. As a DJ, I am expected and paid to provide a good sounding system at outdoor ceremonies, but for me quickness of set up and tear down … and especially flexibility for whatever is thrown at me…. is of utmost importance. I can certainly understand when you are contracted for doing sound for a live band, and this requirement gets tagged on, it would be frustrating to know the right equipment is out there, but if your client is not helping to pay for it, it’s not realistic to have available in those sorts of cases. In that case using what you already have with you makes perfect sense. Still, I look forward to the day when I can relax knowing you both are saving your backs when one day I will see you setting some nice portable Everse units up lol.
@@terrymckone9616 Good convo..thanks!
@@thesoundcouple thanks !! Love your videos, I have so much respect for your knowledge on audio engineering….I wish I could do that for my living….keep doing what you two do!!
What do you guys use to record multi tracks
We will use either Capture or Studio One. We have several videos showing these in use.
Do you guys use aux fed subs?
We do not.
good old 418's . still have a few in use. smaller rack toms
Yes....and the neat part about it is that AKG was willing to repair them. You don't expect that type of service these days on older products.
Bart and Stacey- great job on your sound company- quick ?- I’m running sound for a great band part time- currently using a QSC system ( 18” subs and K12’s- I’m looking to replace the high packs - you seem to have good luck with the cdl12p’s - how would you compare? Would appreciate your input. Thanks Ted
Hi Ted - We don't work on the QSC systems, but I have operated them over the years. It wouldn't be fair to even try to throw out an unbiased opinion because I really don't know. We like the smoothness of the CDL cabinets and how well they work in so many environments....However, QSC makes good gear, and if anything, they seem very committed to designing and supporting quality products....in the end, it's probably more about your needs.
Thanks👍
Hey Bart
I just got 2 Cdl12p speakers-they sound great- had to eq 2000 down- run them at unity gain- some clipping - adjusted to + 8 - helped slow down clipping
Any hint or stuff I am missing
Thanks Ted
@@tstorto They do "appear" to be more sensitive to clipping. We understand that technically, this could be an issue, but we use our cabinets...hopefully not abuse and they are flashing a bit, we don't worry about it. After 3 years of pretty steady work, they are still doing great!
Hey Bart
Just a quick update- had a job last Saturday - 900 people plus outdoors - the Cdl12p were great - band was very impress - I do need to get them a little higher from the subs - what crank poles do you use?
Thanks Ted
I have a shure slxd4 wireless microphone system. It works great.
We like our Shure microphones!
Wait cut- did Bart tell Stacy I can’t get it..
🤦🏻♀️
Hi Bart and Stacey - love all your videos! I am seriously curious what the dollar amount budget was for this gig? You have great gear like ULXD quad and tons of presonos not to mention that Bart and Stacey are pros delivering reliable results. I am guessing between $1k and $2k but would appreciate if you could share this info. thanks...Mark
Hi Mark - are rates vary depending on the band and gig, so to be fair, we are not able to disclose our pricing as it's not consistent.
24:52 - Bart: makes me .... on edge....
I am pretty focused at gigs!
Do you feel that two single 18"s are enough for this type of outdoor gig in terms of low end reproduction? I have invested in two JBL SRX818SP but haven't had the chance to take them to an outside gig yet :)
Well....we could have done with more, but it worked out in this case. We also consider the amount of gear based on the event, budgets, and space. We find that you can typically get by with a bit more conservative system for a wedding. Low end is relative, subjective and negotiable....getting the clarity of vocals and instruments is more important.
@@thesoundcouple totally agree about clarity vs low end. Will be interesting to see how the JBLs will perform. Thank you for the reply and have a great weekend!

I noticed the yellow tape on the tripods. I had to do the same thing because every drunk woman had to fall on it and bend them. I think even with the tape people are hell bend on destroying my stuff.
Sorry to hear that...yeah, we do what we can but it seems like people are going to do what they are going to do and it sucks when it negatively impacts you!
The grounds actually look like the camp in American Pie 2.
Right? Stacy and I were commenting on everything we didn't see when we were there...it's pretty cool to watch this on video.
What dmx do u use for lights
We use Luminair for control connected to an Enntec ODE box.
27:25 oh so it's one of those atmospheric heaters it adds atmosphere and not heat. It's almost like heat rises or something?
I had a corporate talk and the hotel had issues with the heat and it was a really cold day. I don't do cold well so I brought my own heater. The heater pulls a good 15+A and it was no problem Sharing with all the equipment, until somebody brought the heater from the hallway and pluged it into the same circuit. Just as we took a break I started hearing beeping and I'm like oh that's weird the projectors often wears this beeping coming from ..... oh the UPS. Had to reboot the projector and a camera but no ill affects. after that I moved to the other wall which was a different circuit, I didn't want to risk being knocked off again even though I prepared with a critical things on the UPS.
And don't let anybody tell you can use a kerosene heater indoors, you can but you probably shouldn't unless it's very well ventilated.
The hotel brought in a salamander heater cranked it up and then turned it off right as we started because it was very loud, so we started warm and it progressively got colder and colder. except for those of us next to the tech table with my 20 amp space heater. (somebody gave it to me it's one of those cube things but it works very good. it pulls like 20A until it warms up, I've tripped so many breakers with that thing but totally worth if I got a dedicated circuit or two).
Watch out for tripping hazards. Watching Stacy walking backwards carrying the FOH rack with the backpack laying on the ground was scary.
Yes...sometimes you get too focused.
Love you guys... buy you need a camera with better dynamic range @29:35 .... But thats not what this channel is about... this is the cinematographer in me talking... Ok, "Shut up Mike"! lol
Not a bad point, but yes....it's a balance. We mostly use our iPhones which allows us be fluid and seamless and overall, they do great with a wide dynamic range we put them through.
The locking out GFCI thing was a thing a few years ago. I think it's so stupid just imagine you have a refrigerator or freezer plugged into a GFCI in the garage in your power goes out that thing ain't coming back on. It's a feature looking for safety. And I think and hope we're finally moving away from that.
DID YOU ALL FALL OFF OF THE FACE OF THE EARTH ?????? WHERE YA BEEN??????
We are here! New video coming soon!
I met the guy from Under Cover at NAMM and went into a rant about The Sound Couple. "You should thank your lucky stars that they use your products..." that sort of thing. I probably should have toned it down...
That's awesome! They have reached out to thank us. One of our founding goals of our channel is to share with others of what has worked for us for those that are interested. We appreciate that RUclips can support us with this approach and you don't need sponsorships or lots of money to share your experiences.
Is the drummer the only one with in-ears? And everyone else is using the wedges to hear themselves?
Yes...he is happy to use in-ears for us.
This one time at Band Camp….
🤣
As a guitar player, I can't imagine how awful playing in 40 degree weather would be. Those strings get cold and my fingers wouldn't want to work.
Agreed...the band did make a call to stop early which was understood as a possible outcome by the client.
I want to be friends with you on facebook
We will let you know if we get a page!
