    Thanks for watching. 🙏 Do you like Nickelback...ehm I mean Kodak Gold?

    • @AlexOnStreets
      @AlexOnStreets 3 года назад +1

      I like ONE Nickelback song ok? OK!? It's "Someday" but for the love of god don't watch the music video! It's like when you come to Japan you will do Karaoke and if you select this song in the machine you wont know if it's one of those generic music videos for (insert rock band) or if it's specifically made for the song. BUT for some reason I like the song. This is not a proud moment for me.

    • @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel
      @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel  3 года назад +1

      @@AlexOnStreets i think i can resist watching the nickelback music video.... just like that. 😆
      For karaoke, the songs are certainly quite good. 😆 I liked the fact that a game developer once called his project Nickelback to make sure that no one investigates. 😂 But yes everyone has certainly a "favorite" NIckelback song.

    • @Herfinnur
      @Herfinnur 3 года назад +1

      Well, it never, ever looked anything at all like that when I used it some 20 years ago. I still liked it, but what the hell did you do to make it look that good? Do you develop it yourself? And no, I've never ever looked any Nickelback song. I remember thinking that at least their guitar sound was really good, for about twenty days until they annoyed me so much that I completely stopped listening to any pop-rock music at all for several years.

    • @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel
      @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel  3 года назад

      @@Herfinnur maybe 20 years ago it could be a different film stock. Like the portra 400 we have now didn't exist 20 years ago. 😄 I meteres for the shadows and give it a extra stop of light. the rest is post processing with negative lab pro and a bit of a white balance change. nothing a good lab couldn't do. ✌Haha yeah that's probably the biggest problem with Nickelback. They have been played so many times that you just don't like them anymore for that reason.

    I love that your generation thinks buying 57 rolls is out of the ordinary. Buy all you can find and empty all the shelves. It will help send the message to film manufactures to keep making film. In my 20's and 30's I would buy around 400 rolls of 36 for a trip to another country. I still have a freezer dedicated to film and buy film by the brick even though I shoot 80 percent digital. Keep film alive! Buy lots and shoot more!

    • @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel
      @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel  3 года назад +3

      People even got mad at me in the comments for buying that amount of film. 😅 400Rolls. 😳 That's insane. A film chest that will definitely be on my wish list. 😄 i'm doing my best to convince as many people as possible about film. as you said well, only through sales do you show the companies that film is still alive.

    Yes, I was going to comment that your Gold photos were the most unsaturated, pastel colors that I have ever seen come out of Gold especially in sunlight. It was designed as a film targeted to a saturated blue and yellow/gold look in bright sunlight. So, it was interesting to hear that you have a processing technique that in essence desaturates the normal look the film was designed for. It would interesting to hear how your processing does this.

    • @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel
      @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel  3 года назад +10

      The first step is to overexpose Gold and meter for the shadows. Then i just scan it with my Fujifilm camera at +1. When i convert it with negative lab pro it just looks like you described. saturated blues and gold colors all over the place. Then i just crank up the exposure. I will explain everything in a future tutorial series. 😄

    I started shooting film when I was 11. (1981) Tried many different brands of film and processing labs. Of all the combinations of film and prints I used Kodak film printed on Kodak paper is the most accurate. It looks as good as the day it was printed (some is 35 years old ). None of those prints have shifted colour over time.

    Every once in a while I take a trip from The Netherlands to Germany to buy... Kodak Gold. My last trip was 3 weeks ago and it was widely available but when i check out the availability on the website it looks like not a single store in Germany has any Gold stock? Do you think it's coming back? I am a bit scared that DM will stop having this 3pack and film in general in their assortment and that would sadden me for real. Or, at least for these great prices. I know there was a worldwide price increase and 10 euro a pack is still a steal of a deal but.. it was only 7,50 last year so seeing the availability in red everywhere makes me... a bit nervous to be honest.

    • @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel
      @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel  3 года назад

      The film is guaranteed to come back! Kodak does not permanently produce a film stock but rather one after the other. Now only the current batch is bought up and you have to wait until the next one is sent to germany again. As for price stability, it can be difficult. Rossmann has drastically increased its prices the same can happen in the DM. So when gold is available again grab as many as you can. 😄

    If you don't use up all those films, trow them in the deep freeze. So you can end up like me, having all kind of untouched, almost fresh, interesting films from the 90's, early 2000's and some even from late 80's !
    Now fun aside, I've used Kodak Gold in those times too. But it feels kinda differently than your photos, and I can't decide is the difference it in your editing or the film itself is somewhat different.
    And a side note: sometimes, when you move or pan, your GoPro video footage almost falls apart. Just saying...

      Yes I bought a great kodak bag in my flea market video. there are now all the films in the freezer waiting for their turn. 😄
      I think the emulsion shouldn't be that much different but my editing of the film is already heavily customized to my style.
      I've even noticed that with the gopro. is probably a problem of the bitrate in the action cam itself, but I can not change. 24fps is probably not helpful but I like the look. 😄 thanks for commenting.

I would like to shoot Colorplus instead because it's very similar but without the warm cast which is not ideal for indoor or shaded photos for my taste. I prefer C200 more and actually I never got any of the muddy browns or weird color shift in the shadows. I shot +1/3 to +1 EV using exposure comp on my Olympic OM2n and sent it to a legendary film lab in southern US. I couldn't believe how much better my C200 scans looked than more than half of the samples I saw before shooting it. Either they exposed incorrectly or their lab doesn't handle it as well. • @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel
      @TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel  3 года назад +1

      oh hey, i think with any film it's always the post processing that determines the end result. to me, films are just raw material that you can edit the way you want.
      That means also a portra can look "bad" or gold can look like portra.
      First of all, the exposure of the film must be correct. Under-exposure rarely looks good. then it also depends on how you scan the images. there you really only have to get the white balance and brightness right. if you get portra scans from the lab and they don't look good, i would change labs. Otherwise I will make a detailed tutorial in the future how to get good results. 😀
