Just leaving a thank u for going through the long process of comparing the pushed film to the stock and all the different results from various scanners!
Very nice, answering the questions no one has really asked yet. I will say, awctshually medium format doesn't have increased tonal range, that is determined purely by the emulsion and not the size of the negative. The only change is the size of the grain when compared to the image size, medium format yeilds smoother transitions between between tones, highlights and shadows, and will have slightly better color saturation and tone preproduction.
Should ask the owners of CFS if their back hurts from carrying Film Photography in SA. (Also if they want to expand north to JHB/PT 👀 . We desperate here)
I saw you in public one but was to shy to approach you. It's so sick to see all these familiar places interpreted by a film photographer with your artistic vision and style. Thanks
Come say hi next time mate! Glad that you enjoy seeing the Cape scenes as a local haha! Next I'll have to go up the mountain, or hang around the waterfront or something lol!
Wow the saturation from the pushed scans is beautiful. Also I've tried a few rolls myself and I 100% prefer the rendering of the colours and dynamic range compared to its 35mm counterpart. Really surprised with it.
I'm glad you dig em man! I was worried that they looked terrible and that folks would be like "wtf is going on here" ahahah, I'm very pleasantly surprised with it overall too though!
Mad respect to you for planning to donate your hair to charity. I've been growing mine out for the past two years to do the same, but it's not nearly as long as yours. Proud of you for doing that! Also great video as always! It was nice to see the side by side comparisons between the box speed and pushed!
Ahaha whenever I think about how long it's taken to grow it out I'm like "hmmmm maybe I should just hold off for a bit" lol! Think I've been growing it since like 2018 now, so it's taken some time but will be worth it when the time comes to give it away! Also glad you enjoyed the video man, happy to provide some insights into things haha!
Really stunning landscapes and locations for photography! To my (old) eye, the pushed shots had a feel of Kodachrome (25/64) to them -- the heavier contrast and yellow/red oversaturation. And with the 120 negatives, still very acceptable grain. But even the box-speed shots had a great "Kodak" look to them. A nice addition to medium-format stock! Thank you for all of that work to make those comparisons.
Thank you Aengus! Cape town is a special place indeed! Lovely to hear that you got a kodachrome feel from the pushed stuff too, I wish I'd been around when Kodachrome was a thing haha! Only a pleasure to do the work for the comparisons, I'd have been curious forever if they hadn't been done haha!
@@willysheepskin -- Grew up with Kodachrome (35mm *AND* Super8!) and TriX. So I lean towards that warmish "Kodak" look (though I do like an expired Fuji 800 in 35mm!). And thank you for donating your hair -- my first ex-wife passed away from cancer in 2015, and our daughters grew/donated their hair -- it can make all the difference to someone going through chemo to feel "normal."
This was a great review of what this film can do. I just finished processing a roll of pushed Gold 200 +1 stop and its a great balance between the overly contrasty/saturated look of the pushed 3 stops results.
It just gets better. I learned plenty and loved it. Liked the warmth of the pushed and the hand printed. There's an outcry!! Love your hair Will but cutting it for a good cause - love that too! Looking forward to the trips!
Haha I'm sure the outcry will recover if I do end up cutting it! Glad that you learnt and enjoyed things though, the hand prints definitely win for me too!
Man the way you carried the RB at the beginning had me on th edge of my chair. It was pretty interesting to see the comparisons across the scanners and the color hand print with them. #willportraskinforever
Wow. What a comprehensive review! I definitely love the 200 versions, and I really appreciate how you mentioned the thinness of the negatives. Very important to know. Knocked it out of the park Will! Thank you 🙏. Looking forward to you overseas trip, and cut you hair or don’t. You do what you want. Cheers 🍻 😊
Cheers Justin! Glad to hear someone likes the box speed like me ahah! Always happy to mention things that I notice! The overseas trip should be a blast hey, but mainly excited to share stuff from expeditions that have already taken place haha, so ready! Have a good one man!
2:13 is a gorgeous example of why to push. Left feels too airy. Right looks like a proper darkroom print. Still never leaving my lord and savior, Portra 160 though.
Yeah man for sure! I think that one is a great example for when the push goes right, although I should probably bump the contrast in the box speed scan anyway it is still a bit flat haha! I need to give portra 160 a go again, don't think I've shot it in years now
I actually really like how the pushed GOLD looks, and that says a lot because I already love GOLD! Looks kinda like a subtle Lomo Xpro cross processed vibe. And he'll yeah, shout out to Cape Film Supply for sponsoring you bru!😭🔥 Lekker video, as always💯
I'm so excited with all the new films coming out! I don't think I would personally want to push Gold 200, but I'm really glad you did this test. Also, the colors you get in your final images are so good! Can't wait to try Gold 200 in 120 for myself!
Cheers Reimann! The more film the merrier! Also yeah the raw scans always look extra terrible especially from the Imacons cus I like to scan as flat and janky as I can and then pull the colors back out of the file haha, gives me more room to experiment!
I think that's a much more reasonable push to make haha! I should just shoot 4 different rolls and push them to 400 800 1600 and 3200 to see how far this stock can go and what looks best lol!
Wow the first in the country who can test a new film. that's great :D At least now I know that gold looks really good and should definitely not be pushed. XD
Ahah you're the gold expert with your horde of 35mm my good sir! Very honored to have been given the first pack of this around here though, was so cool to try out!
already missed you willy, awesome video like always and wonderful photos you took. Ngl I'm super jealous that you have so much sun over there, here in germany it's rainy and cloudy day in day out haha Keep it going man, looking forward to the big trip video ❤ (btw I will miss your long hair, but it's for a good cause so it's okay. Hope you will grow it out again afterwards)
I missed you too ahah! Glad that you enjoyed the video though, and don't worry that was the only properly sunnyish day this week, it's been cloudy and rainy here since lol! Winter is coming! Looking forward greatly to sharing some trip stuff!
i love your long hair!!! will be sad to see it go! :( (but happy for the cause but still sad) thanks for doing this vid! i really love the print of the bushes, i think this is the first ive seen anyone experiment with the new gold. I have a fisher price cam from my childhood that take this film, i should did if out (it has two view finders, hand grips and is red, blue and yellow :D)
Cheers Acirimis! The DVC is going to make a return as soon as I've got a nice new tape to film on cus all of my current ones have decided to shuffle off their mortal coil and can't be used lol!
Found your channel through your comment on Bryan's video yesterday and I'm so glad I did. Lately I've been contemplating the jump back into film photography, specifically medium format, and I find this all really helpful -- especially being able to see the difference between the scans in addition to the box speed vs. pushed. Also, I totally feel you on the long hair struggle during winter lol Love to hear that you are planning on donating your hair too! I'm just a few inches away from meeting the length requirement and have considered doing the same once I get there and winter rolls back around.
Oh that's awesome Jake! Bryan's the Goat haha, that latest video of his is so rad (they all are but the latest one is too haha). I reckon get back into it if you're contemplating! So much fun to be had and many photos to be made! Glad to hear that you feel my pain on the long hair in winter front haha, I'm still psyching myself up to do it but the time is nigh at this point lol!
Ahhh cheers Sreeku! My pleasure! I'm very keen to play with it some more for sure, I think it has immense potential, and you are most welcome for the detailed review haha!
I'm blown away by what you made with Gold man 👏 IMO some of the tones in the pushed shots were oh so wavy-almost wavier than box speed in some light. Won't lie it won't be the same without your glorious locks, but donating it all to cancer is a damn fine reason if there ever was one.
Cheers Brendon! I reckon I should just cruise around for a bunch of sunsets with it, it shines for the sunsets lol! Especially the pushed stuff actually! Maybe I just shoot exclusively pushed gold at sunset for a month haha, that'd be interesting! Also yeah man I'm still in the seriously contemplating stage about the whole hair thing, but it feels like the time is coming and I'm sure it'll go to good use!
@@willysheepskin I mentioned it to her on the phone but said I couldn't afford to buy any, a few weeks later I got a random package and there it was, still waiting for some good weather to shoot it all.
Best review yet, I’ve not used it yet but it looks like a nice summer walk around film stock. Don’t think I’ll push it though, rendered much nicer (in my opinion) at box speed. Loved seeing the hand prints. My darkroom at home is finally finished so I’m going to start hand printing then flatbed scanning those prints.
Cheers Robbie! I'm jealous of your flatbed for print scanning haha, I should probably see if I can score one for a good price sometime since I have a fair few prints that I should probably scan lol! Hope you get to experiment heavily in your new darkroom very soon! (Also I definitely prefer it at box speed too, although the sunset stuff did have a vibe to it pushed haha)
Ahaha I laughed at that edit! Yeah the contrast and look of the pushed stuff lends itself well to a scene that benefits from the contrast, but contrast is very rarely good for the sort of portraits I make lol! All about the soft gradation in a portrait I am!
Stunning scenes. I love the saturated look, but if buying a print to display on my wall would probably go for a softer option... So very difficult to choose 🙈
Amazing video... just got an old film camera with limited f stops and shutter speeds... but a box of Gold 200 burning a hole in my film pouch. Thinking 400 and 800 push should be just right (like the contrast and color shift your samples showed)
I'm trying to understand the "push" process, is this only related to when you developp? so you're basicly not changing neither the shutter speed nor the aperture on the cam right? Everything happens in the dev?
Great video as always! I didn't think Gold in medium format would push so well! The results I've seen from pushed 35mm Gold have not gotten close to the rendition you were able to achieve with 120 film. Makes sense though since there is more tonality/information on the larger negative (as you explained). Always love to see darkroom prints as well. I'm considering signing up for my Uni's color darkroom, because setting up my home darkroom for RA-4 seems like a bit of a pain. Do you have access to the new Color Mission film by ADOX in South Africa? I know you mainly shoot medium format, but I would really like to see your take on that stock!
Doooo it the uni darkroom is where I learnt how to do stuff haha! Spent many happy hours in there, and would deffo highly reccomend it over setting up RA4 at home. I'm not sure if we have access to Color Mission, but I'll ask around and see if I can maybe get some in!
As soon as I saw the IG story you posted of how much Gold you got, I literally could not wait for this video. I do agree with the other comment here, pushed really does look better.
Man, it feels like it’s been forever since I’ve chatted with you in the comments lol. I’m looking forward to seeing how your trip went and what these spectacular photographs look like . That said, I also have a question for you. Recently I’ve been listening and watching a lot of videos of contemporary photographers giving interviews that touched on a wide range of subject matter. Things like photo theory, project inspiration, etc. As a result, photography and the abstract ideas surrounding it have been on my mind a lot recently. My question to you is: What inspires you the most? I know on the surface that is one of the most cliche and basic questions one can ask a creative/artist, but I really want you to try and run with this 😂. I suppose if I had to try and narrow the question down, I would ask: When looking back, what things in your life have left a significant impact on how and why you do what you do in regard to photography? This literally could include anything from a memory to a song to just inspiring ppl like me with your work and videos. Ik this is a very long and drawn out question but it’s been a while, and I’m excited to be active in the comment section again 😭 (After reading that post, I realize how impractical it is to expect someone to come up with an answer off the top of their head. I personally think it’s an fascinating to hear people share their thoughts on their creative process so I’m going to leave the comment up, but feel free to answer whenever and whatever capacity you sit fit 🤝).
Ahoy Kamari! Lovely to catch you in the comments once more haha! That's a super interesting question, and one that's definitely tricky to answer lol! I don't think there's a single thing that inspires me in photography really, the act of making the photographs or finding something to make an image of is what get's me most excited I reckon! When there's a final image to look at it feels like the journey of it's creation is over and it's almost sad. When I'm out there making things and something super special happens or shows up though, that's what gets me going and keeps me on the hunt for images! When a scene or situation pops up that's suuuuper special it's like being struck by a bolt of lightning and I go into like hyper focus mode and try figure out how I'm going to make an image that's worthy of the situation. It happens veeery rarely, but the idea of scenarios like that popping up is what I'm always chasing lol! Hope that helps!
@@willysheepskin William Sheepskin, you’re an incredible person. I never doubted the fact that you’ll eventually respond to a message I’ve sent in the comments, yet every time I get a notification that you’ve responded I’m pretty excited. I don’t even respond/read my emails in a timely fashion, but you somehow manage to give thoughtful response to nearly every comment under your videos. It might not seem like a big deal but given how superficial the internet can be it’s remarkable to see people striving for genuine and authentic interactions on here. -Enough with the lengthy tangents though - I definitely understand your answer and I can see how the film medium suits you. I can also relate to the appreciating the journey or process surrounding creating a photograph. I think regardless of level of expertise there’s an element of ‘randomness’ built into the medium that can’t always be taken into account when shooting film. That is to say, there is always a new perspective or something different to consider that pushes you to want to make “the next picture.” Idk if the Shrek movie franchise is as popular SA as it is in the States, but there is this quote where Shrek basically compares himself to an onion because he “has [so many] layers.” I feel the same way about film. Infinite layers and room to play and explore. Therefore the process of trying to take it all into account and make the best picture you can in that specific moment is exciting. In the context of what you shoot, I think your work is pretty successful as well from an artistic standpoint. Obviously I can’t speak on the specific artistic intentions behind your images, but your work is inspiring beyond a technical aspect. I myself feel compelled to want to travel more and see not only the places you’ve photographed, but more of the world in general. So to that I say thank you William
Ahaha how dare you! Jk I definitely like the sunset ones a bunch too, I'm just a fan of maximum TONEZ so the scenes where it crushed the detail out of the shadows I wasn't too big a fan of lol! Also no no, the red one was metering for 1600 and the black one was set to 200, that way I didn't have to constantly adjust the ISO on em haha!
@@willysheepskin ah ok that makes total sense re: 2 light meters. I found some of the pushed ones had that extra contrast but didnt see the lost shadow detail as much. But definitely an interesting look pushed 3 stops. I thought you just pushed 1 stop and was surprised there was such a big color shift. Then i remembered you did 1600iso
I have two meters and figured I'd save myself some momentary mental gymnastics and just roll with two meters haha, guaranteed accuracy without relying on my dodgy numerical ability that way too!
Didn’t really think I’d be interested in shooting it, but it looks like it actually is a viable option. Still preferred Fuji and luckily just picked up a box of 400H for the price of Kodak Gold. Where will you go overseas?
Dang that's an excellent price for 400H well done! Although it still scares me cus I've never managed to scan it nicely ahah - I'm potentially headed to an island someplace around Asia that I've never been to before!
@@akaYu07 Nooo I'd have sent you a message for sure if that was the case haha! I'll chat to you about it as soon as I've got tickets confirmed lol, don't wanna jinx myself!
Should be! If you can adjust the iso manually you just set it to meter for 1600, and if you can't manually adjust look up something called "DX code hacking" and you can push it that way!
I got the first pack out of the first box to arrive at the Kodak distributor for Africa ahah! Although to be honest someone probably already brought some in from overseas at this point, first legit box though lolol!
I haven’t heard anyone talk about this: HOW DOES THE FILM DRY AFTER DEVELOPING? Does it dry flat (like 400H or Tri-X in 120) or does it curl heavy (like Lomo 400 in 120 or Tri-X in 35)? How flat it dries will impact how easy or hard of a time a person will have scanning it and this is now the main thing I look at when evaluating films….
I like your videos such source of inspiration and knowledge. And also can anyone please assist me with places or shops that deal with Film photography in Durban or Mpumalanga
Ah sorry Jo! I kind of figure that one can pause the video more easily than it would be to skip through them if they were on screen for too long haha! Shall post stuff soon though and then they'll be there to see for as long as you like!
@@willysheepskin true, but keep in mind many people like me like to watch it on their tv RUclips app. And there is a giant overlay when you pause, so that’s not really a good option. Just a few seconds longer would be fantastic :)

Ahaha I only bring it out on the most special occasions!
Some of the pushed photos look really good. Produces a unique look - similar to the hand print - that would otherwise be difficult to create.

My mum surprised me with a pack the day it came out!
Dang Barney your mums a legend!
Pushed looks slightly better imo
I think it looks cool in some scenarios but in general I'd rather have the extra tonal range to play around with personally!
absolutely amazing comparisons, thank you so much!
Fantastic comparison
Thank you Alexander!
wow!
Gold pushed 3 stops looks amazing!
edit: not on people though
Ahaha I laughed at that edit! Yeah the contrast and look of the pushed stuff lends itself well to a scene that benefits from the contrast, but contrast is very rarely good for the sort of portraits I make lol! All about the soft gradation in a portrait I am!
@@willysheepskin same
And just to clarify, it's only the film which is not the best.
Maya is looking even more gorgeous than ever!
Inspirational, Thanks.
Thank you Taoren!
WILLY!
PAIN! MISSED YA LAST WEEK!
Stunning scenes. I love the saturated look, but if buying a print to display on my wall would probably go for a softer option... So very difficult to choose 🙈
I'm going to have to go back and reevalute how things look now too haha! The scenes were definitely nice though!
This is hilarous, I wrote this comment when I paused at 2:48 exactly and he explains/answer my question at 2:50. Thanks Will.
Think it could be quite nice at 800 for something a bit more subtle!
Very true hey! Might have to give it a go sometime and then compare all 3 haha!
Wow I think it looks so much better pushed. Great job 👍🏼
So interesting seeing how some folks prefer box speed vs. pushed! Glad to have given you some ideas for how to shoot it though Michael!
@@willysheepskin I’m definitely going to try this now!
As soon as I saw the IG story you posted of how much Gold you got, I literally could not wait for this video. I do agree with the other comment here, pushed really does look better.
Ahah cheers Marco! Gotta test the waters you know! I might have to reevaluate my take on things if more people prefer the look of the pushed too haha!
Ik this is a very long and drawn out question but it’s been a while, and I’m excited to be active in the comment section again 😭
(After reading that post, I realize how impractical it is to expect someone to come up with an answer off the top of their head.
-Enough with the lengthy tangents though -
I definitely understand your answer and I can see how the film medium suits you.
Actually liked the pushed ones more =X also, did you use hang the red sekonic around your neck and use a regular black one for metering????
Is there a reason you wouldn't just take the 200 reading and cut 3 stops for the 1600 shot? ... thus avoiding the need for 2 light meters
I have two meters and figured I'd save myself some momentary mental gymnastics and just roll with two meters haha, guaranteed accuracy without relying on my dodgy numerical ability that way too!
@@willysheepskin haha fair enough
Didn’t really think I’d be interested in shooting it, but it looks like it actually is a viable option. Still preferred Fuji and luckily just picked up a box of 400H for the price of Kodak Gold.
Where will you go overseas?
Dang that's an excellent price for 400H well done! Although it still scares me cus I've never managed to scan it nicely ahah - I'm potentially headed to an island someplace around Asia that I've never been to before!
@@willysheepskin Not Taiwan right? Otherwise I’ll hook you up with some locals!
@@akaYu07 Nooo I'd have sent you a message for sure if that was the case haha! I'll chat to you about it as soon as I've got tickets confirmed lol, don't wanna jinx myself!
Late to the party, but SHEESH some nice videography this time
Thank you, I had an expert called Maya help me out
I like to push 6x6. I’m a squarepusher 🙉
ahahah I should try out squarepushing sometime!
is it possible to push film on an Olympus IS3-DLX
Should be! If you can adjust the iso manually you just set it to meter for 1600, and if you can't manually adjust look up something called "DX code hacking" and you can push it that way!
when you push to 1600 and get it develop, did you tell developer that need to go a few stops?
lol what a flex. first on the continent. =)
I got the first pack out of the first box to arrive at the Kodak distributor for Africa ahah! Although to be honest someone probably already brought some in from overseas at this point, first legit box though lolol!
Thinner negative base - just cheaper to produce :D
Ahaha someone at the lab made the joke that it was so thin cus they just cut Portra in half, I laughed so loud!
I haven’t heard anyone talk about this:
HOW DOES THE FILM DRY AFTER DEVELOPING? Does it dry flat (like 400H or Tri-X in 120) or does it curl heavy (like Lomo 400 in 120 or Tri-X in 35)?
How flat it dries will impact how easy or hard of a time a person will have scanning it and this is now the main thing I look at when evaluating films….
Oh don't you worry if it was a curly fella I'd have mentioned it haha, it dries flat flat flat it's great in that respect, just flimsy lol!
what are your thoughts to use expired Kodak gold 200 year 2002 pushed to 1600 or 6400?
The goldpusha
Das me 8-)
I like your videos such source of inspiration and knowledge.
And also can anyone please assist me with places or shops that deal with Film photography in Durban or Mpumalanga
Thats a scary way to carry your RB...
Gotta keep it living on the edge so it's never sure what picture will be it's last, that way it always has to try it it's best ahaha !
Gotta keep the hair Will.
Ahhh it might stick around for a little while yet but the writing is on the wall for it at this point I reckon haha!
Also, shave it off for a portrait pls
Only if you take the portrait muahahha!
Dam that film is nasty
So sad that you are showing your pictures so fast. No time to really look at them. You have the time..
@@Jo-np7rr dang I’d never thought of that actually, thanks for letting me know will keep it in mind going forward!
Agreed. We need at LEAST 3 Californias 😁
