man, the amount of detail still achievable with film so old is so rad. I have a few rolls of panatomic x and this makes me really excited to try it! I might have too send you some!
There has to be some kind of magic going on outside of it just being low iso for it to last this well haha! There's no fogging or anything! And the results are beautiful to boot! I would be monumentally grateful if you did decide to send some panatomic vibes this way haha!
In high school photo class, 1989-90 year, teacher asked me to clean out the back room and fridge, throw it all out… I was granted a 1986 expired 100’ roll of panatomic X and Kodak Extachrome 100, 1986 as well. We were already using tmax 100 and 400, tri-X and plus-x was basically done. I remember having the upper hand with my craft when I had all that pan-x to mess with. I still have 2 rolls expired in 90 sitting in my freezer. At some point, I hoarded as much as I could find. Combined with HC110, it was made for pan-x.
Ah what a beautiful set of circumstances haha! Jealous that you still have two rolls on hand, they'll probably dev just like this and look brand new haha!
How cool is this?! There’s a lot I don’t know, and I can’t say I ever remember this film. I was young when it was made, but still…. Excellent share Will 😊Thanks for bringing this story to life. It was definitely enjoyable to watch. Cheers 🍻. Also, hot dog! You made me tired watching you walk up those stairs.
Hahah cheers Justin! The worst part of that rock traversal was my shoes soles are quite worn down and slick so I kept slipping all over the show which was somewhat stressful haha! Weird how there are stocks that are ubiquitous for some folks that others have never heard of hey! I think there are a bunch out there that I have yet to discover, but am looking forward to giving them a go haha!
Cheers Asher! It's a wild spot indeed, feels like a different world haha! Glad to hear things are progressing on the gym front from your eyes, seems like slow going to me but the new habit is fun still at least lol! #Ashersquaaad
Cool shots, i remember my photography professor rambling about this film stock. Also thanks for the disclosure about the caravans. Makes your casual exploration of the wreckage way less worrisome.
Nice video and images, that looks like a cool area to photograph! Pan-X was a great film, I discovered it right at the end of its life. Another nice one was Kodak Tech Pan, I still have a dozen rolls of 120 that I should run through my RB one of these days.
Nice. B/W is the biggest reason I started shooting my film cameras again. I really understand about the filters. I don’t think B/W should be used without at least a yellow filter. The 3 stop loss with the red filter can be annoying but I’ve found the 2 stop loss Orange filter to be a good alternative. Be careful out there without a hat you could get a bad burn on that dome of yours
Cheers Bob! I reckon you’re definitely right, orange is probably the perfect middle ground, although I’d just use a tripod with it anyway since things always seem sharper with mirror up on the RB. Also thanks for the excellent advice regarding head gear haha, I was a bit too brazen on that day and got a very light burn but am more cautious now as a result!
Oh WOW. Some truly epic pictures made with very polished videography to accompany your artworks ❤. That caravan seems to have needed wings! 😢. Always a good day when a Sheepskin video alert pops up ❤
David did a really excellent job!! That caravan must’ve had wings of some kind cus it managed to travel a decent distance horizontally before coming to rest haha! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Justin, Will here, I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed the images, and I try keep the RB in constant action lest it break down on me haha! The back actually had a minor leak on a couple of these frames, but oh well!
Ahh of course you'd have a stash you legend! I hope they bring you much joy, I'm going to jump on the first lot that shows itself around here for sure!
this film works beautifully with the landscape, you're so spoilt for choice in SA, i struggle so much in London and often don't pick up my camera until i'm overseas. On a random note, i watched the movie Civil war last week and as a photographer it kinda blew my mind seeing the perspective of a documentary photographer, the trailer is actually pretty diff from the movie itself. anyway i thought i'd mention incase you're interested, i left the cinema feeling totally stunned and hyped at the same time lol
I had the same experience with London! Although when I got to go on trips to smaller coastal towns I found that quite exciting. Folkstone is probably my favorite place I went in the uk, theres a house on a hill there that you can see from the docks I think and it looks like it's straight out of a novel. Plus the verticality of the town was cool too! If I ever go back to the UK for an extended period I'll be back there and on the hunt for other cool small towns haha! I'll definitely check out Civil War, have been hearing a lot about it!
@@willysheepskin that’s what I’ve been thinking actually, to visit some costal places, thanks for the recommendation . Devon would be another great place but it be cheaper to fly somewhere else in Europe then go and stay there lol if ur ever back in the London the barbican is quite a nice and unusual spot to photograph. Enjoy the movie!
Panatomic X was my favorite film for portraits and architechture in olden times. I was sad to see it go. However, Ilford Pan F is very similar, and still available. Give it a try.
Ah man finally some b&w for us! I would love to see more of your b&w work and especially your darkroom prints. Loved the video and the picture of the steps carved into the rock is just top notch
Duuuude my whole black and white neg folder just evaporated somehow during my move last year and I just rage quit black and white for a while as a result haha. I mean I still shoot 35mm bw in the Mju but haven't touched it for 120 in ages, after this experience though I'm going to get back on it and put a gps on my neg folder or something lol, sigh. The chain and the steps on that rock are probably my fave too! The clouds were putting in work haha, very glad you enjoyed that one!
@@willysheepskin nooo that’s such a heartbreak, I can’t even imagine. Good news is you can always make more and prints are harder to lose haha look forward to seeing them
@@Tokrm Yeah I really still don't understand what could've happened to it since I keep everything together and am really precious with my negs, who knows they might still pop up somewhere strange, but for now I just have to assume everything needs to be remade lol!
South Africa really is a gorgeous nation, certainly on my bucket list. I'm not sure what your future plans are but if you go to Namibia or Mozambique for a photo project, the outcome would be legendary! Great video as always, and hope you're doing well. Also, bridge shots are OP! - Alp
Namibia is definitely on the list! Also slowly scheming a way to head back to Tanzania where I grew up and make some work there, the scenes would be elite! Glad to hear you enjoyed it Alp, and very glad to say I am indeed doing well! I hope the same for you!
I shot Pan-X in the 70s almost exclusively before moving on to Kodachrome 25 in 1978. Nothing really like it now. Ilford Pan F not even close. 100 ISO T grain Films are a good approximation.
Envious to hear that you got to have a good run with it! I'll have to have a crack at Tmax 100 again then! Very keen on an approximation of this stuff, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I’d be interested to see how this compares to something modern and low(ish) speed like FP4. It’s a shame there aren’t many low speed black and white film stocks for 120 that aren’t T-Max, lower volume stuff like Adox, or the super high contrast Ferrania stuff.
I've never been particularly interested in the low speed black and white stuff, but given how rad this turned out I reckon I'm going to have to try source some things to compare for sure!
Cheers Reimann! It does somewhat, but actually is slightly flatter whilst still having nice contrast going on which I'm a large fan of. That location is super wild though hey!

Wait a minute... so you're opening the shutter with the camera trigger and closing it with the wire trigger that is plugged on the lens? How the hell havi I never heard about that 😂😂
It's a specific RB/RZ thing, that particular way of doing it. You can do similar things with other cameras but they usually achieve it with a button on the body to lock the mirror up.
