  • Monster Hunter World's version of Lunastra gets alot of hate, but is it warranted? Let's have a retrospective look at the monster and see just what she brought to the table and why people get so dang mad about it.

I really think her main issue is that she creates too many fire patches. The patches themselves are fine and bring some interesting mechanics, but she makes so many so fast that the area just becomes an unavoidable minefield in minutes. Then her nova sets them all off and there’s practically nowhere to go. The nova itself would be manageable if the patches weren’t all over the place. Just throw on a fireproof mantle and it does literally nothing to you

Now that I think about it, the patch that added Lunastra to World was the beginning of most of my major issues with World/Iceborn. Attacks that kill you outright unless you stop what you're doing and perform a very specific minigame to survive, temporal mantle, and the overall power creep seesaw that occurred every patch.

The first part is still really annoying even in Rise. Just look at MR Allmother Dragonator attack. The only reliable way to counter is to use the farcaster.
The Gaismagorm minigame where you have to shoot it is atleast more creative and interesting.
So far Rise/Sunbreak have no power creep so far. Some new armor is really good but only because they are endgame monsters. Otherwise other armor and weapons from much weaker monsters are still really reliable.

My two main issues with lunastra:
1- her special assignment before you can actually slay her. She had too much HP that needed to be taken down in 15 minutes and the arena you fought her in made her supernova unavoidable. You either had to pretty much perfectly execute a sequence of dives or you're dead. You can't play too defensive either or you fail the ridiculously strict DPS check.
2- the nova, that's my only problem with the fight itself. The puddles are annoying as hell but manageable. The nova just feels so artificially difficult. Dying to the nova rarely ever feels like your fault. Its pretty telling when I went back to her HR fight with endgame MR gear and the nova can still bring you to almost dead

The thing that irritates me about Lunastra is not necessarily the puddles, and not even really the nova, it’s how she runs up to you and flinches you which leaves you staggered and opens you up to her next attack. She roars and runs you down and knocks you on your ass and then hits you with harder attacks. I just found it annoying how she’s so aggressive but her moves aren’t easily avoidable. I get it that she’s supposed to be hard but I just found it really annoying to fight her. There’s other monsters and bosses that are hard that are more fair and predictable.
For example Velkhana is pretty challenging and she has charge attacks but they’re much more easily avoidable and her moves are predictable and fair.
I know you can jewel in flinch free, ear plugs, windproof but I find it’s way too much of a stat investment and you’re gonna be sacrificing a lot of dps to do so.

This. I don't like complaining about the wind pressure or the flames since you as a hunter can bring skills to counter it. But the thing i hated the most with her is the headbutt and she chains it so many times it's actually annoying. Pair it with her non stop wind pressure and constant heat damage and it's a recipe for a sour experience.

  • @fartoocritical9409

The only issue I’ve ever had with the Luna fight was her hypernova and the fact it was basically unavoidable. You HAD to take to dragon strength wind pressure during the nova which more often than not, leaves you in a bad position. You couldn’t superman dive or I-frame roll through it. There was essentially no way to counteract that unless you made the kushala set which I was very unwilling to do. I always use high damage sets on monsters I never go defensive. The fire patches I can see the complaint about tho. She shouldn’t make as much at one time and the hit boxes should be fixed on them. Other than that, she’s honestly great. I personally love her aggression and her mix ups on attacks. The fact she has two variations of the tail whip is really cool and both still have their own telegraphs.

Escaton judgement doesn't come with wind pressure or a flinch or whatever, and deals lower damage if you've done enough elemental damage to alatreon.

  • @rudy_wolff
    @rudy_wolff Год назад +5

My problem with lunastra is that she uses two mechanics that I just really hate: mines and wind pressure. I see mines as a cheap way of damaging a hunter after an attack is dodged. For example, glavenus will shoot a fireball at you, which explodes a second later. Not the worst thing, but I just feel like it's kinda cheap. Also wind pressure. WIND PRESSURE. Wind fucking pressure. Oh no its windy! I must cover my face? Wind pressure seems like it should just knock you on your butt most the time, but instead the smallest amount of wind will force your character to cover their face (for whatever reason) or they will just stand there posing for a few seconds, giving the monster a very big opening to hit you.

What I love the most about the nova are the completely random fire bursts that can't really be dodged and will not only damage you but cancel what you're doing and make it almost impossible to still have to go out of the way. Her nova is so annoying that I generally choose to just farcast away and apparently for the very first frames of the animation for farcasters you aren't invincible already so even though I spammed my farcaster as soon as possible a random fire burst blasted me away to certain death (was against her AT).
Overall I think Lunastra is just badly unbalanced and certain parts of her fight feel not thought through. She isn't close to feel as justifiably difficult as Fatalis and Alatreon (which were my favourite hunts in the game) and is just annoying. I don't even think she is that difficult and certainly not if you are using both the rocksteady and fire protection mantle while playing solo but still feels unfair. Her being an Elder Dragon isn't a 5D chess move from Capcom to convey that she is supposed to be that and I think it only really could justify a certain amount of difficulty you would expect from an Elder Dragon and not whatever this is

I don't know why so many hunters can encourage the others to take it easy; just max your fire res, use fireproof mantle, etc. It is hard and not enjoyable, at least for me, and some other hunters. Saying our judgement of a particular monster is misplaced, was a total understatement. Why we can not angry for what we have got but we can not enjoy? Why the developers give us something we can not understand? "Lunastra intended to be the new final monster", what the hell was that? "Lunastra is an Elder Dragon that is supposed to be hard", yeah we knew it! I don't know why you've come up with that excuse while totally comprehend that Alatreon's problems are decided by the developers' choice (but I'm glad you admit it). We can not enjoy as you guys do. It is what it is. Please, admit that not all of us are as good as you. I've seen your Alatreon video and thank you for being generous over you statement regarding Alatreon mechanics. I think Lunastra was terribly executed, and deserves her hate (though not every criticism is fair). Her concept though, excellent. Napalm counterpart to Teostra is really neat, mostly unique to the series. However, the main two problems are how ENORMOUS the hitboxes are on the fire puddle explosions, and of course the nova. I am not a fan of how much more damage the attacks she shares with Teostra do either. I think the fixes to her are extremely simple, just adjust the size of the fire explosions, the timing on her nova, and her physical attack damage and I think she'd actually be a very good fight. As of now though she is absolutely not a fair fight. I have faith in MH6's rendition of her though

I agree with just about everything here, but I’d like to add that Lunastra’s hitzones are probably the worst in the game:
Cut weapons do the most damage to the wings, which outside of knockdowns and the IG are pretty much unavailable at all times
Shot weapons do the most damage at the tail, even more than cut weapons (????) but good luck getting behind lunastra for longer than half a second. The tail, like the wings, is also usually too high for cut weapons to reach
There are no weakpoints on her forelegs, body or hindlegs so you’re doing pitiful damage for most of the hunt unless you crowd the head. Her worst attacks come from directly in front of her and in multiplayer you have to deal with tripping because all 4 hunters are basically forced to attack the head outside of knockdowns
Her neck and foreleg hitzones are deceptively big and her head hitzone is quite small. You can line up an attack on what you think is the head and end up hitting something that isn’t a weak point and has bad hitzone values
On top of all of this she’s SO FAST. Any attack you try on tail or head will probably end up in you getting hit or she moves and you hit legs or body. Put together, I never feel like I can land a good hit against this thing.

  • @thenadei9477

Commenting this as I watch it, but the main reason people disliked her on launch was because she was broken.
Capcom gave her the wrong stats, which they fixed in the following update. Lunastras stats were always set to 'Tempered' (or Arch Tempered? I forgot which). Which, of course, made her way too powerful.
That, with the reasons you named, was why people hated her.

1 thing that isn't stated enough about how poorly designed Lunastra is is her topple value. Every monster has stagger values where you hit a part and after you reach this stagger threshold once or twice on the body part the monster will topple. For over half the monsters in Monster Hunter World it's 2 staggers to the legs. For Teostra and most Elder Dragons it's 2 to the head and this is shared between all but 3 Elder Dragons, those being Kushala 1 to the head, Xeno'jiva 1 to the legs and Lunastra who is visually a carbon copy of Teostra you'd assume shares 2 to the head but no, Lunastra is 2 to the legs to get a topple. Teostra and Lunastra both have this majestic crown on their head which is the most visually striking part of their entire design and unlike with Xeno'Jiva the only other Elder Dragon to share the leg topple, Lunastra's legs are not a good hitzone. Lunastra also came out in base World, IE a world without the Clutch Claw and tenderizing so her shit hitzone legs were always shit.
This is objectively just bad design, she's a failure of communicative design because her most visually defining aspect is not the best spot to attack her, she's a failure of contextual design because if you fight her like her palette swap you're fighting her wrong and she's a failure of gameplay design for all those reasons. She's also a failure of her own design because back in the day you broke Lunastra and Teostra's horns to mitigate their flame aura.
Lunastra isn't designed to be a good fight, she isn't designed to be a fun fight and she isn't even designed to be a hard fight. She's designed to be a cheap "gotcha" from the devs because no matter which angle you look at Lunastra she betrays any basic concept of basic design principles.

I don't have any solid evidence to back this up, but I felt like High Rank Lunastra was harder than Master Rank. I remembered her being super aggressive in HR and would never stop moving, but in MR they toned it down quite a bit. I actually really enjoyed MR Lunastra, despite HR Lunastra being so infuriating to me that I took a break from MHW for a month or so.
Maybe it's because I learned how to better fight her, or because MR armor just has better skills and stats on it, but I genuinely believe they listened to the players who complained about Lunastra when she launched and toned down her AI in Master Rank.

It's definitely a fight that with the hindsight of iceborne, i think found it's place. It somehow got easier in Iceborne with MR Lunastra not doing her hypernova as much thanks to her new Nova cone move which was alot easier to avoid. Plus definitely had some of my fave baseWorld weapons with the XenoLunastra tree having razorsharp skill being a nice comfort skill early on.
As a worldnoob, I appreciate how many fundamentals her fight taught me properly, such as the superman dive, utilising skills and mantles and prepwork before heading out. And making use of dragonseal to lower the amount of novas she'd do. Basically only use dragon type weapons whenever fighting Teo or Luna in world to lessen their flame properties in a fight.
Kinda wish that was still a thing in Rise but I get why they didn't

While I am 2 years late to this,
Lunastra I think is the devs trying to make the players visit defensive skills, things as mentioned wind pressure negate from Kush can outright negate Nova pressure, but also Fireproof Mantle can drastically reduce heat dmg as well. This is also on on top of the fact that sushifish/astera jerky can heal all the heat dmg taken in an instant. Lunastra's wide range of puddles are like Brachy's slime, while being on the ground they act as a danger spot the hunter needs to move around. While it is true that they gave her a bit too much of it, Master Rank certainly reduces it quite a bit so I think the devs knew what they did wrong there.
Personally speaking I found Luna (AT) easiest when playing with Bow back in base World because of how much defensive skills absolutely neutralizes her fight. For comparison's sake I never solo-ed any of the other ATs with Bow, which is the weapon I played and learned the entire base game with including all World endgame. She's a bit too different from the other elders for her time, and I think that's what made her hellish and hate-able to fight.

I'mma have to fight her again because though I had trouble with the arena the special assignment for Teo and Luna didn't give me much trouble. With The Legiana Swaxe, combined with some wexploit, power prolonger, attack boost, and ice attack, as well as the fire and vitality mantles, they didn't give me much trouble. Fire resistance doesn't do much, but every bit of health counts. Overall the main issue is reading attacks whilst keeping up the offensive, just like any monster. Lunastra is hard, but compared to other fights not so much. Idk my opinion will change when I go after AT Luna.

Meanwhile your gameplay is you running around shooting it with insect or sniping the wings with arial attacks. The problem with lunastra is really the hit zones above everything else. They make all these tiny problems much much bigger. Her hitzones would make you think you need to aim for the head because that’s where most weapons get the most damage until she falls over so you can hit her wings. Unfortunately most of her moves are frame one or close to it active around her head. Standing in her face is a death sentence. So where do you hit then? Her hind legs with most melee weapons until she falls over. If you position right you are pretty safe around her hips unless she decides to stand in a puddle. That makes puddles worse because when you stand near her hips she tends to do moves that don’t move her. Oh but in iceborn you can soften her hind legs for better damage right? Wrong. You grapple her tail and it just softens the tail. The only thing I don’t agree with people on is the nova. When she is about to pop just flash her and run. If you flash lunastra while she is in her final flame aura she will nova 100% of the time. Honorable mention to when she just decides to fly forever and blow flames and waste your time.

Look, I hate her, I do not like or enjoy fighting her but I will admit I was happy she no longer was a 'blue Teostra' as she was dubbed in my head and I am happy she is back, with prep she isn't that bad a fight but I still hate her and I still don't like fighting her.
Personally my main problem with her is the wind preassure. Fire puddles? That's what fire mantle is for, Insect Glaive or just outright avoid them. Heat damage? Freedome Unite trained me well, I knew that is what the cold drink is/was for. Supernova? Just run, superman dive or farcaster out of there. Wind preassure? I know the negate skill helps but at that point I had tried using that skill maxed out against Kushala Daora and it did not work (I believe if I remember correctly that skill was bugged during a period of time, it left a bad taste and I never used it again)
What took me a while to learn though, was the fact that flashbombs simply trigger/accelerated the rate at which she would 'omaewa mo shinderu' the hunter out of existance, like an idiot I kept using them. But after my friends and I figure this out we would trigger her supernova when we were all at full health and ready.
All in all once the anger passed I realized it wasn't that bad. It still doesn't change the fact that I hate her and that I rather not fight her nor do I enjoy doing so.

Bro, this monster is garbage. Broken hitboxes that all have wind pressure on them, insane fire patches, roars and attacks you after, attacks you when she's stationary and powering up. Harder to KO, broken super nova, constantly moving super fast. If I didn't have a rocksteady mantle it would be almost impossible.
Obviously there's going to be skill creep that's set the part from the main. But people on average wanna enjoy fighting too, and this monster is broken. Especially since she's considered the wife of teostra. If Teostra had these broken wind mechanics etc to his game I'd understand, but he doesn't. He's quite literally the weakest and easiest elder to fight, so why isn't she on par with that but with a different moveset.
Let's say her attack patterns are the same but her hitboxes are like Teostra and lacked wind pressure. She'd be much more enjoyable and make more sense

I'm a middling to fair MH player, not that great but not awful, but my favorite elder dragons were Lunastra and Alatreon. I love fights that overwhelm you at first but with enough prep and patience you can turn the tables on the monsters. I think most people's aggravation come from not wanting to change their play style, weapon or gear to beat a new monster. They seem to be happier to have the same fights with a new gimmick and a different skin.
P.s. I mostly play solo so I don't have full party wipes from their novas. That would be aggravating for sure!

I think so too. I've seen so many posts on the Steam Community pages or the Monster Hunter subreddits, complaining about certain monster, about how they're "bullshit" and "unfair". But most of those could've been solved by just proper prep. It seems like they have this one-size-fits-all armor set that they refuse to part with or change whenever their weaknesses gets exploited by certain monsters. Sometimes you have to change your build, sometimes you have to change your weapon, sometimes you need to play slower. That's just how MH has always been.

@@kurosan0079 I don't like if people are forced into playing a certain Meta like they did with Alatreon.
Monster Hunter was always about choosing you own playstyle. Generations even embraced it much more.
But because the Iceborne Meta was so broken, you basicly had no choice but to use the newest Meta to deal good damage compared to others. Normal IB weapons and armor became almost completely useless with Safijiiva or Raging Brachydios.
But with Alatreon they are directly forced to use Elemental Meta, which was only Safi'jiiva and rarely Silver Rathalos armor.
Also the secret multipler still doesn't help much because weapons like GS still deal barely any elemental damage.
If they wanted to push elemental meta they could atleast given Alatreon actual good elemental weakspots and a better mechanic where you are not forced, but more like "rewarded" if you played elemental.
So basicly in the end, everyone used the same Meta with every new update and Alatreon just made it worse.
If the build crafting only relies on looking up videos on RUclips, then there is something wrong
Rise/Sunbreak has atleast much better balancing. Early and mid game armor are often still good and reliable and not every new monster changes the new Meta, let it be armor or weapons.
Yes, the newer armor and weapons tend to be a bit better than most other, but only because they are made from post/endgame monsters.

I’ve never really bought into the hate for Luna. Even if she WERE a poorly designed fight, I’ll take a unique shitty fight over “Teo but blue” any day. But I like her fight quite a lot. I like having to manage my surroundings alongside the monster, I like using elemental damage to my advantage, I like that her hitzones encourage unorthodox play, and I LOVE how dangerous her nova is. THIS is how powerful Elder Dragons should be, I should prepare myself before going after a Teostra, not slaughtering them by the dozens without a second thought. As it stands, quite a few of the Elders don’t feel nearly as special as they once did. My hope is that the next mainline title goes fully open world, and an Elder Dragon sighting will be a rare event that hunters either dread and mark places to avoid on their maps, or get excited about and set about pulling out all the stops in preparation. In any case, thank you for the great analysis! I just discovered the channel and really appreciate the insight you bring to the table.
