cephadrome in gen2 is more annoying to deal with than ples. can't even fight the thing without burning my stock of sonic bombs. plesi on the other hand is just waiting for the water gun move then get close charge the GS(im a great sword user) dodge roll behind, charge again rinse and repeat. or just use a heavy bowgun with auto reload if u wanna cheese the f*ckin b*tch. green plesi, is just the same but a little faster.

Personally, while I don't like Cephadrome, Plesioth is 50 times worse. Depending on your weapon, you can hit Cephadrome in the sand with certain attacks, like the Hammer's downwards slam and the Long Swords downwards slice and roundhouse slash. Plesioth can only be hit by certain ammo from Gunner Weapons when in the water.

Funnily enough, the hip check rarely went further than it should. It usually just hit behind the attack, which messed up a lot of hunters trying to reposition. His hitboxes are janky but his AI is super easy to manipulate in mh1. All you have to do is stand a few feet in front of him and slightly to his left. If you positioned yourself correctly he will only spam the water beam which is both easy to avoid and gives you a nice opening afterwards. This will also work for cephadrome's sand breath.
Also in at least freedom 2/unite, you can sorta cheese plessy with LS. You almost stand right on the toes of his left foot. None of his attacks will reach you except for the hipcheck, but you can actually roll forward through it quite easily. Just don't get too greedy and anticipate the attack. This can work for green plessy as well but it's increased speed makes it much more difficult imo

In fact the worst thing about Plesioth : it's that it has an actual great design ! While Lagiacrus is a sea Crocodile, Plesioth is a river Shark. From an ecology point, he's cool. Thanks to its design which is incredible, i mean, it's imposible to mix 2 badass animals like a dragon and a shark, and not saying this is sick. So yea the only real issue and wasted potential with Plesioth is its fight. And yea, no surprise, it's excruciatingly overwhelming. Since the beginning, Plesioth always felt off because, he had the exact same moves as Gravios but with less weight. Which is very weird because he has hitboxes which transcend multiverses, but unlike Gravios, it doesn't look like it belongs to him. As a freaking agile Shark-Dragon, he should have quick and erratic movements and attack like but not really (there's only the knock-over animation) In this regard, Cephadrome and Lavasioth fights look far more "fishy". At least not until 3U, where i presume, most OG's were mindblown by this HUGE STEP UP for Plesioth. And this is pretty much the last true update plesioth had. And it was kinda great. Of course the fight was still painful, but at least it felt like i was fighting a fish with sicks moves underwater. This is very sad to say, but it was the only time, since the beginning of the franchise, when i could say : "WoW he's stylish" (underwater only ) rather than "WoW he stinks" (most of the time). So i must say, if Capcom succeeded at reworking and making FREAKING YIAN GARUGA and Rajang : *FUN* to fight in Iceborne. Then i have hope for 6th Gen Plesioth !!!!

Plesioth to me isn't an annoying or a bad monster, but I can understand how it can be perceived that way and it's also maybe due to me being a bow main.
It is the one monster I will say to just use ranged weapons exclusively against it except for in 3U.
The majority of people who really dislike/hate Plesioth are nearly all Melee weapons mains and somehow it seems like a large portion of them always forget to bring frogs and Sonic Bombs.
In all the compilation videos about Plesioth I have seen and of playthroughs by newer fans visiting the older games I have watched they nearly always go with a melee weapon and don't bring sonic bombs.
The only annoying thing about Plesioth to me is killing while it is still in the water in the Gen 1, 2 games and in Generations.

Interesting to see the changes to Plesioth over the years. My only experience with it is from GU, as I'm newer to the series and haven't played (nor do I really intend to play) the older games. Rise and GU only so far, though I'm eagerly awaiting MH6.
However, I absolutely hated my times fighting the big dumb fish (SwAx and LS user in GU). While its hitboxes are better in GU than they are in older games from footage I've seen, they're still really bad. Because it's so damn tall, you can really only attack its legs with most melee weapons, sometimes getting a hit in other zones. Yes, there are attacks that will reach its head or tail, but the stupid thing moves around so much they can be very inaccurate. On top of that, a bunch of its attacks turn its entire body into a hitbox, sending you flying. The sleep bite is ridiculous and unnecessary. While it stays out of the water longer than older games, it will still dive back in basically whenever it wants, and zone changes with it were just exercises in frustration.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I like fighting Jyuratodus more. Overall, IMO, Piscine Wyverns are far and away the worst monster type in every incarnation.

So the sleep was always there, they just gave it to an attack that can actually hit in its 4th gen version :p

Plesioth in Tri was largely the same on land. In water it was tuned to actually fight there. But the biggest reason that people were fine with that was because we could actually chase the bastard into the water. It's one of those fights where I try very hard to kill it as fast as possible and pray I don't need to farm materials from it.

How to not feel pain against Plesioth
1: Use bow(Pierce bow are fine, Scatter is good)
2: Prepare some status coating and/or Bombs
3: Run circle around it(preferably on your right)

  • @Evan-mt7bc

One of the biggest issues with Plesioth in the early games was it's size, Plesioth was tall as hell and the only way you could deal meaningful damage was to hit it's tiny little stick legs, the great sword couldn't even hit Plesioth anywhere else but it's legs. This being the early generations you had to buy your animations a nice ring and plan a big wedding because you were committed to every attack for life so you'd attack Plesioth's legs then Plesioth would pretty much every single time hit you with a hip check or tail spin unless you managed to it and asking someone to a monster like 100 times in a 20 minute fight was an insane tall ask. Plesioth's damage was also insane so it's not like you could tank it. Because you had to play so careful and slow against Plesioth not committing to anything made the fight a lot longer and more annoying.
If you were playing Lance Plesioth was a bit better because you could alternate stabs and shield which would make Plesioth still annoying but less frustrating. Some people who dedicated themselves to learning Plesioth did find out an AI manipulation trick that would pretty much lock Plesioth into using it's Water Beam attack on repeat with some clever player movement allowing you to just wail on Plesioth's weak little head and not deal with his most annoying moves. When they finally shrunk Plesioth in Generations he became a ton more bearable being able to actually hit his meaty parts and position better against his janky attacks but also he became sort of mid, even though they like tripled his movepool he is just kinda boring.

Using Pierce Light Bow Guns vs Plesioth and Green Plesioth in 3 Ultimate were some of the most fun I ever had against these monsters, a duel between snipers and sweet sweet revenge! Heh heh
Also, both of these make a cameo in 4 and 4U where you can make their gear just by fishing them, not hunt required (especially since their not available, giving a little more focus to Cephadrome).

A little bit off topic but in MH. Capcom should introduce new RANGE weapons, one being a "Monster Breath", being a cannon(slow move) that could shoot rocks and bombs, while its special would be an elemental "breath" being 3 types: beam, thrower and ball. In this case a "Monster Breath" made of Plesioth would have its special move a Water Beam. Rathalos would be a FireBall. Teostra would be a Flamethrower.

I actually really like the Plesioth visually. No other Monster has huge fins like it. It's like meeting an old Rival. The fact that he was THAT BAD made him memorable in his own right. So having a fixed version like Gen 3 would be really nice with current tech. He has nostalgia value.

  • @browncow5210

As someone who plays GU, he found a whole new way to annoy me besides the hypserpace hip checks and sphere of pain tail spin. There was a Prowler quest I did in Misty Peaks. The goal was to catch and deliver 3 silver fish. It turns out that when he's in the zone, you can't actually fish because Prowlers just throw a frog in the water regardless of whether or not he's in the water. This meant I spent an unnecessary amount of time firing bounce bombs into his underside trying to drive him off instead of fishing. 40 minutes into the hunt I've only got 1 fish. I get lucky and 2 of them spawn in my fishing spot. All I have to do is catch them and I'm done, and guess who shows up to try to run down the clock? Luckily I did win, but man that was nerve wracking.
I do have to ask, what's with all the hate for Lavasioth? Plesioth and Cephadrome are absolutely terrible monsters, but Lavasioth seems like a perfectly acceptable fight. His Whack-a-Mole moves are fairly interesting, and he actually keeps his head low enough to hit most of the time.

Hyperspace tackle is a great little reference to the most hated hip check in the franchise. I think it's just cause he had a weirdly high stance compared toother wyverns and it made him really janky and hasv weird hit boxes cause it's several feet higher than someone like Rathalos. Why he needed those long legs, I do not know. But I feel like Jyratodus was meant to be sort of a redo of Plesi.... but he's boring too. Even with the mid skin mechanic, and creating mud terrain.

You failed to mention the best part
The hip check move in 3U and GU had fixed hit boxes but also had a wind pressure that would hit in a considerable range on its side as a sort of a joke of the original hitboxes
To put it simply the original hitbox became a wind pressure attack while the damaging hitbox was made fair

Honestly I think the worst incarnation of Plesioth was Green Plesioth from Freedom Unite. I have vivid memories of having to fight a giant monster that attacked fast, had a ton of HP, and I had to go between waiting 3 minutes for it to get out of the drink when I ran out of sonic bombs only to have to fight it in the volume of an actual aquarium. It doesn't help that one of all TWO zones he appeared in on the island was the one with all the bamboo, which combined with the heavy rain, its green color and the generally c*cked camera controls of a PSP game made him a very literal headache to try and hunt. The worst hunt in the entire game I think, right behind FU Tigrex. And Tigrex is my favorite monster! XD

Well, coming from a World player that went back and spent 150+ hours on MHFU on the psp, at fr at I found Plesioth rather annoying(like most monsters in that game), with it's weird hotboxes and just waiting for it to jump out of the water
Initiall I was using Lsword to fight Pleaioth, got a few wins and that's that. I'd quit half way through the hunts a few times simply out of frustration from it.
Afterwards I had to farm it for some materials, so I went looking for different weapons to deal with it. Lo' and behold, the hammer was great against it.
It also helps that by that point of time, I could dodge through it's hipcheck most of the times.
I also learned from experience that the Plesioth being so big, if u stand below it when it spins, it's AI is force to hipcheck in order to hit u, so with that in mind I can make long openings for bashing it's feet.
Overall I think Plesioth fight isn't too bad after a few hunts, heck I'd say it's one of the easier monsters with how manipulatable the AI is with positioning. Really the only grit I have with it is how long I have to wait for it to jump out of water
