This is my review of the NEW DJI Focus Pro! (Used on BMPCC6K Pro & BMCC6K with Cine and Vintage lenses) And I was also lucky to get my hands on the new Ronin RS4 Pro :). Cheers, Flo
12:30 one thing I have noticed is that the manually setting is something that most people think isn’t even on here, so it’s nice that you pointed it out. The only issue is if the lens you’re using is not parfocal, then having multiple focal lengths is pointless, as you have to manually set it every time. But on my 24-105, 24 is set for perfect lidar, while going above that (or really up to 35mm) makes lidar useless for keeping focus. But in quick shots like weddings I find it easier to pull focus in the 70-105 range while 24mm relies on lidar. Really with these camera had hard locks when focusing manually like how zoom rings on everything work. Love the video!
Thanks for watching and glad you liked the video! And yes a lot of people, myself included, are excited by the autofocus but being able to use the system with Manual focusing is pretty cool as well and I love the natural feel of it :).
I don't have ani DJI item but I always look for their stuff because every time they release a new gear they seem to innovate way ahead of the competition.
11:24 actually there is a sensor mark on the Blackmagic cameras, it’s just hidden by your cage aha. Top right, just above the fan, on the sloppy side next to the screw on top. Best!
@@OfTwoLands ahaha right, I thought the same for a while until I removed the cage to clean the camera and was like: Owh, that would’ve been useful to properly shim my cine lenses ahahahah
Love the video. I gave up on the gimbal for my BMPCC6K rig as it NEVER worked for the Moza Air 2 thanks to my super heavy Sigma Lenses. So I literally this week was about to pick up an RS3 Pro to see if that fixed my issues. Lo and behold, the RS4 email from B&H came into my mailbox yesterday and I was pumped. Then I see you have reviewed it and now I don't even have to wonder if it will work as it seems you have already proved that. As always, I love your work and I appreciate the format you use for these reviews. DJI should be paying you on top of sending you free gear (in case anyone from DJI is reading these comments) as you have SOLD me on their new line up. Thanks, Sean
Thats a nice combination because i found the limits on the RS2 pro, definitely will upgrade. The offset from the BM case is a lot for the RS2. Thanks for that.
Thanks so much for this review, good to see that it won't work with still lenses. Convinced me to go for a Cine lens and this Lidar setup. Hopefully it will work out.
Hey Flo, thanks for all your awesome content :) Quick question at @12:30 in the video, you mentioned adding the manual end points didn't work. Could you elaborate a little? Im curious why. Thanks!
This is super interesting, but it’s not clear how to accurately measure the distance between the LiDAR and the sensor, especially since there’s no marking for the sensor on the body of the Blackmagic 6K Full Frame. How did you solve this issue when mounting it on the hot shoe? Would love to hear your thoughts!
So my Focus Pro is on Back Order. The RS4 arrived yesterday. I watched a few videos detailing both items. Yours is the only one that showed close up pic of both. My observation was...How do you power your BMPCC? I saw no external batteries. You only rely on the internal camera battery? My set up is..I got rid of the RS2 and only do handheld with a NPF battery on top of the Smallrig Wooden handle and external ssd card.
Is it possible to mod a lens with a non-fixed focus ring in a fully reversible way? I also use the popular Sigma Art 18-35, my inelegant solution is adding tiny clamps to an added belt ring and these clamps then mechanically stop the gear wheel of the focus motor. A bit annoying since if the focus ring is turned too fast (risk of slipping) you have to reset the proper position so that the calibration data in the DJI system matches again.
Keeps giving erratic results though. I've spent most of the day yesterday trying, all in vain. Tamron 24-70 2.8. Even on set focal distance it doesn't work as it should. Have plans to shoot coming weekend, and it frustrates me af that after paying for the all in one set I still have to rent a lens instead of using mine. It is all DJI's fault, as they _elegantly_ omitted mentioning that the Focus Pro doesn't work on no-hard-endpoint lenses. All they (and most of the reviewers, of course, for obvious reason) keep saying is "for all cameras, all lenses, all gimbals". Very bad attitude, DJI, very Asian.
I just bought one, curious what I can do to use it with stills lenses that have no hard stops. With the nucleus m I would have to stop the lens from turning with my hand once it reached infinity / close focus. Not the easiest thing to do
The thing that I don't understand is: does the rs4 pro combo work as a focus grip? It does have a lidar but can I use it as the focus grip setup or am I "limited" to the gimbal only (with the lidar on top)? If you had to choose one what would you pick? Thanks!
Great review as always. As a DJI fan and designer of accessories for their gimbals ( Heavy Duty Gimbal L Bracket to make the Creator Rig) I’m loving this new batch of products. One thing though (which you mentioned in the negatives), unless you have a pre-release version of the BMCC6K FF that doesn’t have it, you missed the sensor mark on the FF. It’s on the top right of the camera near the fastening screw. You can’t see it with a cage attached ;) 💫
Thanks for watching!! And Yes, haha, it is there next to the vent! It is more of a design flaw from Tilta and Smallrig as I think the cages should probably have it since they cover it. I never shoot without a cage with the Pocket line or the 6K FF.
@@OfTwoLands yes I’m exactly the same and also thought BMD didn’t give us the marking till I saw in in my new FF couple weeks back but then it disappeared with both cages. I made a mental note that it’s near the join of the case in for when I need to measure when the case is on..
Hi, could you explain for me how you are using the Lidar Focus Pro, without having a sensor plane mark on the camera to measure to? I was under the impression that you need to measure to the film sensor in order to calibrate the Lidar.
Thank you mate!! Do you mean for the Lidar unit? When I had the easyrig I put the handle of the right side of the cage for example so you can have the lidar in the middle on top. When handheld and when you still want the handle centered you can install a small cold shoe adapter anywhere on top of the cage to attach the lidar or in my case with the tilta cage I had 2 options either left or right since it had 2 cold shoes built in already. Just have to be prepared for the lidar feed to be slightly different than the cam.
@@OfTwoLands The LiDAR unit, yes! Mmm, I totally didn’t think about mounting the LiDAR unit off-center in one of the Tilta cage’s cold shoe mounts. Makes sense, as I guess it doesn’t just focus on whatever’s in the middle (as I understood the original DJI Focus to do. Awesome! Would love to see examples of that all rigged up from you. Excited to implement it into my productions. Cheers!
if you use the lidar/motor with the gimbal:what about the missing screen from the focus pro handgrip? as example, how do choose the af focus point? best, frank
For the lidar and a matt box could you use a small magic arm with cold shoe to extend the reach? Smallrig, KondorBlue and others have many of them with different attachements.
You can put the Lidar where you want basically but it still has to be straight / levelled to get accurate distance reading I think. An Arm would work :)
awesome review as always! Would you be able to do a video on how to pair the sirui lenses to the lidar system? As would be great to know how to do it if it was a bit of a struggle? :)
Thank you!! It is super easy at the Sirui Jupiters are already pre-loaded in the system so you just have to click on it from your phone :) I just had an issue because I had to setup the installation distance a few times and not having the sensor mark on the outside of the camera/cage made it difficult to cage to get the exact distance.
Is there something like that handle grip for index finger focusing without the lidar? I liked that part more than the lidar part since I'm okay with manually focusing and not looking to spend a grand. As always, great video and I appreciate that you use the gear in situations that mimic your workflow as opposed to the usual YT vid.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I think you can use a similar system when you have just the Ronin but I am not sure about just the grip. It would be great to be able to get the Focus Grip without the Lidar as some people like you might be interested.
@@OfTwoLands For my use case (no people) it's not worth a $1000 to have AF on my Contax Zeiss lenses. But a little less reach to the follow-focus would be sweet.

@OfTwoLands thanks for the feedback. I really love the Blackmagic image, but the lack of auto focus has been a hindrance. It's good to see we're getting something for it
It’s rated for 20m and it does track pretty well, I’ve tested on cars and people. At first we couldn’t always get an accurate focus past 9m but there is a setting to unlock the 20m range. The longest lens I’ve used was a 75mm so far on a S35 sensor since I wanted to use lenses I would genuinely use on this types of shoots. I’ll try my 100mm asap :).
I really want that focus pro one day :D finally works without the gimbal 👏 I'm cool with using manual focusing though so I can hold myself over for now until I can afford this, maybe there'll be a Focus Pro 2 by then xD but yea the autofocus on vintage lenses is awesome. I just ordered some Canon FD's and I'd like to someday use them with something like this 👏
I love my Pocket 4K, but it is so sad i need to pay 1000€+ for the "Pro" version of an RS3 / RS4 even though the normal RS 3/4 would be enough for me in terms of payload and features. But due the strange body size of the Pocket 4K, it seems to be to big for all but the Pro gimbals (Box camera please BM). Has anyone here had luck to use a Pocket 4K with a non Pro RSC2/RS3/RS4, maybe with an extension plate and counter weights?
The RS4 Pro makes it so easy to use the Pocket bodies. The cameras also worked on my Zhiyun Crane 2s just for info. I also used the bmpcc4k on a Weebill S years ago.
I think the video is already pretty packed with information and bts and also long enough. Rigging is different for every setup and camera. Feel free to watch another video or to make to make your own when you get it :)

I really want that focus pro one day :D finally works without the gimbal 👏 I'm cool with using manual focusing though so I can hold myself over for now until I can afford this, maybe there'll be a Focus Pro 2 by then xD but yea the autofocus on vintage lenses is awesome. I just ordered some Canon FD's and I'd like to someday use them with something like this 👏
It really is a useful and flexible product for sure, especially for vintage glass! Hope you get to use it one day :)
this is big....the plot thickens NAB BMD brings out a AF cine cam?
No idea haha, I doubt they will but you never know with all the technology available these days! Pretty happy with this combo for now :)
This is also a low key comparison of BMPCC6k and Sony fx6 low light performance which is fantastic to see.
We had fun comparing and it was super interesting!
I also used the bmpcc4k on a Weebill S years ago.
would have been nice to delve into the rigging. you really didn't touch on that.
I think the video is already pretty packed with information and bts and also long enough. Rigging is different for every setup and camera. Feel free to watch another video or to make to make your own when you get it :)
$2000 for the Focus kit!?!? Dang!
I think it’s just under that but yeah it’s not cheap! Wireless system never are though. Without the Hand Unit it’s a bit more ‘affordable’.
@@OfTwoLands Yeah, like $1890 or something. With tax it's probably over $2000 haha. It's a lot of tech so it makes sense though, just not for me xD
Do you need the focus motor using the gh6 and lumix 12-35 lens?
