Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :) - Хобби
Thank you for being the Steve Irwin of plants
This made me crack up in laughter XD thanks
Yes but don't let the fly trap get you. Be careful.
Another awesome video, thank you for your advise
hilarious 😂
@@jerrylisby5376crikey!
As a Italian mix and my full blooded Italian mom over heard to say oregano she just giggled and kept walking..lol classic 😅
Oregano is very easy to grow. In fact it even tends to spread over large areas. Also it self sows like crazy. Each year I find some little plants just somewhere in the grass. I tend to gift those to others. Bees and butterflies love the flowers which are very pretty. So let them flower. It's also very easy to dry and keeps its aroma too. Definitely one of my favourite plants.
I love my oregano plant too. It is quite beautiful
Thanks for that. Im going to do so.e more oregano that i will allow to flower.
To bad I cant keep it it alive
I was just out in my garden and I had forgotten what I planted. I crushed a leaf between my fingers and it smelled kind of like mint. I figure it will grow like mint once it gets going. I'm not sure if that's a good thing because mint takes over..
plus the flowers are edible as well so it's even better
I LOVE ALL PLANT´S FROM THE MINT FAMILY.
Our agriculture teacher in high school taught us to aerate the soil to help plants grow better. Most of us in the class were too lazy to take care of plants every day but one of our classmates aerated the soil of his group's vegetable bed. Theirs was the only one that produced large bok choy and carrots. The difference was so obvious vs the rest of our crops lol
Excellent instructional. Who knew oregano was so resilient? One of my goals in this lifetime is to have myself a garden as lovely and prolific as yours. Thank you for continually inspiring me! ❤️
No worries Catie thank you and all the best reaching your garden goal! :)
Who knew plants are adapt at living outside. Like o my gosh they don't even have uggs.
I'm from Greece and we love this herb here, it is a main ingredient, along with basil, in many Greek & Italian dishes. As far as the sun, low humidity and altitude, you are very correct. It grows on mountains often rocky ones. Great video man!
I love Greek and Italian food - simple and full of rich flavour - YUM :)
illxs Oregano is from Turkey too.
I have been many times to Greece as I live in Ireland it's pretty easy to go. I can affirm that oregano is everywhere. I normally drive motorbike and the smell in the mountains when you drive is amazing !! I have a kilo at home. I use all the time !
This channel is literally one of the best
Thanks, Mark. Always to the point, sensible and ego-free.
Mine grew much larger than I thought it would when I planted it in the garden bed. Thanks for the information
I had thyme die back several times before I realized my soil was too compact as you explained and was not draining well. I am switching to a mixed soil to add some cactus mix or coconut coir into my potting mix and compost to see if the thyme and oregano do better. Didn’t think to aerate it also. Great tips! Thanks.
Add some perlite to aerate it ❤
Oregano not growing? Awhhh, FORK IT!. I made that up but it's along with what Mark suggested and I love his videos. I watch them all the time and could not resist commenting tonight. Keep the videos coming!
Has anyone seen the Cuban Oregano yet? Has white and green variegated leaves and strong scent too. Comparatively, hmmm. Love it. Hello from Ghana
Every time it’s time to start my greenhouse/garden, I run straight to you 💚 thank you for your amazing channel and garden care!
I am so pleased to have discovered your channel. You are a great teacher. And skilled at editing.
Thank you Patrick! I'm trying my best to improve a little each day/video :)
Love your vids mate! Late 2018 I bought a small farm up here in Norway, and I'm lovingly blowing my mind with the accumulation of information needed to get started. Today we got 25cm of snow, and I'm depressed about it, but at least it gives me more time to watch videos like yours.
Thats awesome, how’s it going now?
The Americans mostly pronounce it "oar-RAY-guh-no." and "oh-REH-guh- no." or-REG-uhh-no" (not "or-RAAHG-uh-no"). No "rag" in there, unless Russian or Austrailian trying to talk American. Or some British.
Some call it like president raygun. lol.
"or-ree-GAH-NO" in Australia. And India speaking English. And close to how to say in Italian.
Love your videos! You are inspirational!
And they needed way more root room than I expected. I was under the impression they were a small plant. So when I first got him it was about 2 days they started wilting I transplanted and I noticed the whole little square nursery pot that I got them in was completely root bound. They need more soil than you might think to the uninitiated.
Thx for the info. Need to get my grandmother’s original plant from the 70’s a refresh. If I can get my portion back to the healthy level like yours, she’ll be smiling down on me as I use it to cook her traditional lentil dish she taught me. Love your enthusiasm too!!!
I really loved this video!! I grow and dry so many herbs in containers! I love having them on hand. Thank you so much for sharing!!
That's exactly the information I needed. You definitely know how to teach. Thanks sharing your knowledge with enthusiasm.
Thank you for the awesome tips and this explains why my oregano wasn't looking so well during winter lol I will be pruning it's back if I'm not using it
Huge thanks for these informative videos Sir. Your enthusiasm and down-to-earth style are very inspiring. Greetings from a frosty UK
This is amazing, that it comes back so beautiful after that hard treatment. Thank you for your tips. Great information!!
Our oregano has been going crazy! It even threw some seeds in our patio's sand cracks last season, I derooted it and replanted it in another little pot next to our other oregano for now!
Thank you so much for your videos! They finally helped me convince my wife to get the Hoselink. She loves it so much she wants another one for the front of the house.
Thank you for your pieces of advice. I took notice of them. I am growing it in 20 litres pots. Best Regards from Montevideo, Uruguay.

Hey Mark even after a few years of doing this video it's still helping us little Gardner's here in Central Florida. Yes our oregano plant drives us crazy but you might have just helped relieve some of the craziness now we'll just be a little oregano crazy. Cheers from the Nana's in Central Florida

A lawn substitute in some parts of our yard! When you walk it smells great!
Can you walk on it regularly?
You are right. I have the same oregano plant for over three years now and it is still growing and thriving in my small raised bed along with other herbs in it, I rarely give it fertilizer. None at all this year and it's still growing strong.
Me an American: It's pronounced "uh-re-gun-oh"

You are a big inspiration to me!! We are going into winter here in Ohio, USA and I am planning next years garden for our new place and I want lots of herbs.
Cool, was just about to repot mine before our Perth summer heat hits us because it’s not looking as lush as it was during winter. Great tip about the forking. I only ever feed mine with Seasol about once a month if I remember. ( except winter time ) Time to get shearing! ✂️
I bought a pot of ore-eee-ganohh (love that Aussie talk, lol) at the nursery a couple weeks back, mid-May here in the US, and I live in south FL. I've never had a live oregano plant before, so appreciated all these great tips for a sub-tropical climate, thanks!

Thank You for the wonderful tips!
lovely tips many thanks
Thank you so much, my oregano started turning brown in the center and I think it was because it was too moist, I had it happen to my rosemary and thyme as well.
Thank you, I find that oregano and Rosemary grow well in my garden with almost no care. But I never ever could grow thyme in the same conditions without killing it... So I'm going to see if you have a dedicated video for thyme. Thanks for your tips 🙏
Your a top bloke mate, love your video's because I've not long moved up here to mid Queensland North of Brisbane from Sydney's South Coast Port Kembla so it helps because as you know South of Sydney gets the frost a heap more in winter so I'm stìll learning and studying the Sub tropical climate here.
Thanks again and keep up the good work and thanks for making the videos for this covid-19 lockdown.
With Thanks,
Scottie.

Thank you for inspiring me with this video. Right now I am also growing oregano, but not that kind, it's the bigger version here in the Philippines. And this really does best in full sun and enough moisture, and does not need too much of fertilizer.
Very informative, where can I get the seeds?
I am in Kenya.
Great tips. I'm growing herbs for the first time ever and oregano is one of them. The plant has buds and teeny tiny leaves. I wonder if its maybe not oregano?? Great video. Looking forward to a nice thriving plant in time with the help, thanks you, of your tips!

Great video! I was surprised growing oregano for the first time how hardy it was over the hot East Texas summer, as well as over winter, surviving sub freezing temperatures and a light snowfall. It looked amazing the following spring.
