@@Selfsufficientme great video. Didn't even know there are many varieties. Is it best to put the nitrogen fertilizer on soil only or is it safe on the leaves to consume pls?
One tiny tip. If you only get one basil plant to grow(happened to me one year and seeds couldn't be found) I took a few cuttings and had them sitting in water for cooking with later in the week and it rooted. So now I pick my best plants and make cuttings to root and move around the garden.
When harvesting basil, I have also found that cutting a full stem rather than pulling off individual leaves helps to keep the plant producing the soft and plump leaves. Otherwise the stem, with the rest of the young leaves at the top still on, just dies and the whole plant looks anemic or the remaining leaves will get dry and taste woody.
When my basil tries to go to seed I cut it down almost to a stump with almost no leaves on it and it regrows a whole new crop, I have found doing this technique that it will never go to seed and the leaves with stay super plump and healthy the whole time. This is especially useful if you need a bunch of basil all at once, for pesto, rather than it just as a spice.
Grow it next to your tomatoes ,trim if going to seed until your tomatoes start to flower then let it bolt it will bring in the bees for better pollination

Here in Tampa area near the Gulf Thai basil is a perennial and self-propagates. Sweet basil is a bit more work. Most of my pepper varieties are perennials here as well.
Thank You "Self Sufficient Me!" This really gave me a good introduction to types of Basil and their benefits. The growing tips were very useful too! And I loved seeing your awesome, huge, healthy Ginger! I'm impressed, awesomely amazed, and abundantly grateful! : - ) Happy 52 years on the planet!
Mark, you ROCK! I Love your videos! I've had so much fun since I started gardening a few years ago and these videos are so helpful. Thanks for the tip about growing some other varieties of basil - I had no idea there were more than just the three knew of. Most of all, thanks for sharing what works for you and what doesn't. @@z.weertje7209 what I heard is about ratio, 1 part urine, 10 part water! Also add 1 part banana peel's tea and sea salt (for un liter of urine 1 Tsp of sea salt)
I've just set up my first batch of stinging nettle liquid manure. What you do is, you take 1 kg of nettle on 10 ltr water. Some say you should mince the nettle a bit but I've just squashed it properly with my hands. That will break open the cell walls I guess. Use rain water if you can. Put the nettles in a bucket, squash them, add the water and then add a small cup of limestone pulver/aglime (that's supposed to suppress the scent of decomposition). Put a stone or something on top, so that all the nettles are submerged. Let it rot for about two weeks. Aerate/churn it every day. It's done when there are no more bubbles coming up while churning.
@@jalemairliha Yeah. Use gloves for harvesting and squashing them. Once they're squashed they shouldnt sting anymore, because those parts of the plant are pretty bristle.
I don't have a garden bit some space on my balcony where I experiment. However watching your videos brings me so much joy and energy, your are so encouraging and I feel like I can do anything haha
I've had a basil plant for three years that has turned into a massive bush, and I just trim off the tips when it tries to go to seed. Love the videos, cheers
Hands down one of my most favorite herbs! I got real happy when I saw your latest video. I'll be over sowing all my herbs this year. So many uses for herbs. Can't wait to get started! Wow! I've never seen anyone with a trained honey bee! Lol! Great tips on basil. And happy belated birthday. I hope it was a great day for you. Have a wonderful day!

Great job, Mark! This is one of the best video tutorials I've watched ever. My Basil Genovese plants are doing well because I followed your tips. For sure, you've inspired so many newbie gardeners. Thanks a lot! :)
Thank you for this information, great tips.
