@@melodyvoss Thank you for your sweetness :) I Enjoy gardening, only in another scale and focus. The "former" gardening was a commercial family-owned garden that just wasn't going to survive in a modern world. It ended when my parents quit. They had us kids have an education to get some "decent" job instead of continuing in the garden. After a LOONG while I've started gardening on our cottage. We just planted some apple trees and berry bushes. Soon it's warm enough in inland to plant potatoes and after that other stuff. I'm a beginner gardener, thank you for showing why store bought basil wilt. I seriously thought I did something wrong because mine kept wilting. Last pot of basil lasted 6 months then died and I just gave up. Going to give your advice a shot
Thanks you for posting this up. Its a silly story, but this brought back some sadness for me. When covid first hit, and shopping was so difficult, I bought a little basil plant. My girlfriend and I kept it alive for quite a while, transferring it to a larger pot, and using plant food and some extra lights over the winter. Somehow that silly little plant was something I could focus on improving, when things were so weird. Well, eventually it got to a state that I couldn't manage it well, or maybe neglected it, and we lost it. Silly, because it's just a plant, but the loss still makes me sad. I think I might try again.
Basil is usually fairly easy to look after for one summer, but becomes a little trickier over winter and into the next year as its only a short lived plant. But with regular pruning and the right care its possible to grow it for a few years. If you grow it again and it starts to go down hill you can always take come cuttings so that you can keep part of it alive even if the main plant dies. I understand the feeling, especially with plants that you have grown for many years, you become attached after looking after it day after day for years.
@@Gardeningat58N Thank you for that! I feel better knowing that it isn't a long lived plant by nature...I think I'm going to give it another go, and set an expectation of a year of it being healthy.

This is really great to see. The summers here have been longer and I was always sad when my basil was coming to the end of its life cycle with quite a bit of growing season left. Now I know... it was running out of nutrients and root-bound. The limelapse was lovely!
Yeah, I think these are two points I've learned, even in large trays these things get root bound and even those remain after the plant has died off, so the following year you get a root brick. maybe change soil every two years? 2 months for feeding, got it.
Basil kept dying on me until I watched this. It's been maybe half a year since I tried and my plant is like 6 times bigger than what it was when I bought it. Thanks a lot!
Love the time lapse at the end to show how successful you were at saving it. One question though: you noted the plant should continue to grow well for another year or two- why? Is it naturally going to stop growing after that despite being well cared for?
Basil is only a short lived perennial, after a year or two the plant usually becomes woody and leggy and it's growth will slowly become weaker. Although if you take cuttings the new plants will grow well for another year or two. I usually grow Basil for a couple of years and then take cuttings to get new plants, although cutting them back like in this video can also help to prolong their life.
@@Gardeningat58N Did the flavor of the new leaves "change" or become bitter after flowering? I'd want to try this instead of pulling up my basil after a year.
Thanks, yes the dark winters make growing certain plants difficult, I use grow lights for my Basil plants in the darkest months to make sure they keep growing.
WONDERFUL! The time-lapse is fantastic; I had absolutely no idea even the dead-looking leaves could recover to that extent. Super informative, thank you
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my time lapse. Yes, depending on the cause of yellowing it's possible for the leaves to green up again once in better growing conditions.
My wife showed me this … So many answers, especially with trimming, dealing with flowers and dryness. Just Subscribed from 18 Latitude North. 🌴🥁US Virgin Islands.
It depends on the type of plant, for fast growing plants like basil it's not problem as it will fill the pot within a few weeks, however with slower growing plants like cacti or certain houseplants you will want to have a smaller increase in pot size.
I wish I saw this in May... Mine were exposed to high heat and too high light during the summer and the results showed this. Hopefully, next year I'll remember the lessons learned. Thank you!
Hopefully this year your plants will do better, they will be fine with strong sunshine in the cooler months, but in late spring and summer it can be too hot if you live somewhere with hot summers.
@@Gardeningat58NI had basil on the windowsill all through the winter :) (Eastern Europe) This summer they will be enjoy more favorable conditions on the balcony :) Thanks again for the video!

I buy basil in a soil pot from the supermarket…this inspires me to pot it up to a larger pot and take care of it a little more diligently! Thank you, the time lapse was fascinating to watch. Cheers from New Zealand. 🐑🐑🇳🇿🇳🇿NZ
Thanks, basil does much better when it has the space it needs for it's roots. Keep it in a warm sunny location and well watered and it should grow quickly with a larger pot.
Many people give up too quick or just can't bring themselves to put in a little work to revive a plant. But now, many ,no doubt, have been converted to plant reviver heros. It is so gratifying to successfully revive a plant. Your video shows that reviving those plants is really possible!,and well worth it.
Wow! Yours advices are really great and to the point! But a time lapse of regrow is BRILLIANT! That's what I've always wished for in that kind of videos, but you have really captured and showed it. It looks so beautifull. It's a pleasure to see how plant revive itself and react to her new conditions you had provided. Great thanks for that!
Thanks for your nice comment, I'm glad you enjoyed my video so much. I always like to include time lapse footage in my videos when I can to show how the plants react to the treatment given to them.
Thanks for the video. I should try growing basil again this summer. Two summers ago, I bought a pot in the beginning of summer and for a while it was doing great. Then, towards the end of the summer, it became what it looks like in your "before" shot. i always thought basil would only grow for one season, ending by flowering. So, I didn't give it any further thought and just let die. Next time, I will give it better care and keep it going. Btw, your timelapse shot is amazing. It was exciting to see how that plant came back bushy life in a month's time.
Fantastic video. The way you explained it seems so simple, and it probably is... yet they're still not the easiest plants to maintain for most. My question would be about the feed. What & how does one feed a plant like this, do you add or refresh the compost? Is there something we can/should add to the water to feed the plant?
Thank you very much. I did not know that window sill plants could be grown for such long time periods. I have been ill treating my plants (not deliberately), but now I will treat them better.
Hopefully you will get a few years out of your basil now, the most difficult time is getting them through winter, especially if you live somewhere with dark cold winters.
Got to agree, that time lapse at the end made me hungry for pesto!! Nicely done and I can't agree more about splitting up that first pot of basit bought to start the season. Give your basil plants room to grow and "bush out".
1) Repotting to allow root growth. 2) Watering enough to keep the compost moist (NOT wet). 3) Compost with nitrogen to boost leaf growth. 4) Grows best 20-30°C with moderate light.
Wow, what a remarkably thorough and info packed video! Thank you for sharing! I grow basil in my garden every year and currently tried started them inside from seeds this year! Proud to say in 2 weeks, my basil is about 4 inches tall already!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video, it's amazing how resilient basil can be and if given the correct growing conditions it can make a surprisingly fast recovery.
Great video, mate! Thorough and well explained each step of the way. The time-lapse of you pruning is very helpful and goodness me what a transformation! I'm currently doing the same to my basil plant that was worse for wear from being indoors without adequate light. Cheers
I don't write a reaction often after watching a RUclips-video. So doing this, already says something 🙂 Thank you for making this informative video, easy to understand and with good videomaterial. I see the video have a lot of reactions and I read some of it. You sound like a kind and warm person ❤. It maybe is just a video about how to take care of a basilplant, but it gives much more than just information. And part of that is because of your reaction on others. I subbed on your channel after watching only this video. I'm curious about what other videos you made!
Welcome to my channel and thankyou for your lovely comment, I'm glad you found my video so informative. I really enjoy helping people with their plants so I try to reply to as many comments as I can. My channel has hundreds of videos, all about plants, some are how to videos like this one, others are diary update videos on my houseplants or my garden. I also make time lapse videos of my plants to help people to understand how plants grow and change over time, also plant growth can look so beautiful when sped up. I hope you also enjoy watching my other videos :)
I did this exactly a week ago. My plant looked even worse than this one, it only had tiny leaves at the top and really long sprouts, but no flowers. As of now I cant see any difference, but I think it really is (as stated in the video) because the plant focuses on root growth rn. Lets see how it goes, I try to keep this updated!
Update: it got some dark-green but very tiny leaves after about a month. I realized I forgot to put the fertilizer.. afterwards decided to plant it in the garden, without any fertilizer and now its growing stronger and bigger leaves again!
Hopefully you were able to restore your plant, basil really struggles over winter, without extra heat or grow lights my plants struggle to survive winter even on my sunniest windowsill.
Thanks, it can be a little delicate, but as long as it has plenty of light, a good sized pot, is warm and is kept well watered it should grow very strongly.
Wow... What a transformation! Here in Cyprus, my basil tends to grow very well due to the heat and very strong sunshine, but I have a problem that I've never been able to solve - once the basil starts to flower, it's impossible to get it out of flowering mode and pinching off the buds just encouraged more flower growth and it stops producing leaves. İf you have any tips as to how to stop that happening, I'd be very grateful!
Basil usually flowers due to stress, but also if it gets to a large size. If your plant flowers lots in summer it may be too hot or more likely too dry for it. Basil is tropical, but in the tropics temperatures don't usually go above 35C and it is norally very humid, unlike the extreme dry heat of Cyprus in summer. Keep it away from the midday sun in summer and make sure it has plenty of water. If it is because it has become a large plant then regular pruning should stop it from flowering. If you also feed the plant with a fertiliser which is high in nitrogen it will also encourage leaves instead of flowers.
Omg that timelapse is like magic happening. I've been really struggling with basil for a decade now. Might give it a try again, just sunlight and temperature might be an issue
Agree with @lgrillo. Also, it was nice that 58North did not talk over it but let the basil come to life and rule the scene in silence. I also appreciate that there was no music. And - the main thing - I learned many things about how to save and keep basil for my pesto happy!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my time lapse footage, I always try to include some in my videos when I can. Enjoy your pesto, if you want to see how to propagate enough basil for an unlimited supply I also have an interesting video about that.
incredibly informative! thank you! I killed two basil plants and felt heartbroken and confused as to what went wrong. I learned so much while watching this, I think i'm gonna try and give having a basil plant another go!
My store bought basils just die out in days even if I split them into multiple pots. They just hold on kinda, grow thick and not very tasty leaves that stay small. It doesn't grow up, it doesn't branch, it doesn't grow big leaves. The existing leaves start dying out and look sick or like bug infested. It might come back after initially dying down and push a lot of new foliage, yet they stay small and start look sick after a bit and the plant itself doesn't grow.
Some basil plants from food shops will have had growth inhibiter added, so they won't grow well deliberately. This is so you have to buy more. The thing to do is buy the plant and immediately use it for cuttings, rather than trying to grow it on. The growth inhibiter is in the soil, so cuttings will thrive, but the main plant will die!
Basil is my arch nemesis, as a chef I’ve tried to keep these going so many times and fail every time! Hope this time we will win! Thank you for your help

@@Gardeningat58N Did the flavor of the new leaves "change" or become bitter after flowering? I'd want to try this instead of pulling up my basil after a year.
I never noticed bitterness unless the whole stem was woody.
But it wasn't horrible. I imagine one as in the video wouldn't taste bitter.
@@RunninUpThatHillh Thank you! I wasn't sure.
I live in Denmark and its always too dark during Winter -magic to watch your video - I learn a lot 🎶💚🎵
Thanks, yes the dark winters make growing certain plants difficult, I use grow lights for my Basil plants in the darkest months to make sure they keep growing.
The best I've seen on basil, exactly what I wanted to know. Appreciate the effort
Thank you . This is what I needed for my poor basil 🌿
15 minutes well spent. Thank you!
The time lapse bit is absolutely tops!! The miracles of nature! So heart lifting!! ❤
My wife showed me this … So many answers, especially with trimming, dealing with flowers and dryness.
Just Subscribed from 18 Latitude North. 🌴🥁US Virgin Islands.
Welcome to my channel :) I'm glad I could provide you with so many answers. Good luck with your basil plants.
The timelapse was beautiful! Thank you for all the information 🙏
Wow I had no idea one could go up to such a big pot! I had read you had to go up one size at a time. Game changer!
It depends on the type of plant, for fast growing plants like basil it's not problem as it will fill the pot within a few weeks, however with slower growing plants like cacti or certain houseplants you will want to have a smaller increase in pot size.
Wow, my plant looks exactly like this and I had no idea there was a way to save it! This will have to be my next project.
Good luck with your Basil plant, hopefully in a few weeks your Basil plant will be flourishing again.
@@Gardeningat58NI had basil on the windowsill all through the winter :) (Eastern Europe)
This summer they will be enjoy more favorable conditions on the balcony :)
Thanks again for the video!
It is AMAZING what many plants will come back from
Yes, even if a plant is nearly dead with the correct care it can bounce back and make a full recovery.
Plants are so underrated creatures
This is the best video I've seen on how to save a plant. Basil always ends up dying on me. Now I know what to do if I see it go into distress. I really appreciate that time lapse video. It gives the viewer a much better sense of what to expect from the work you put into saving the plant. Very cool. New subscriber.
Worth the watch especially the satisfying time lapse!! Will put this new knowledge to work tomorrow! Thanks 🙏
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my time lapse, I always try to include some time lapse footage when I can. Good luck with your basil plant, it should recover well.
Going to repot my wilting basil now.Thank you for the great vid!
I'm sure your basil will love its new pot.
The time lapse gave me a serotonin boost. Such a happy plant!!
Thank you for sharing this video. My basil plant looks identical to yours. With pruning shears in hand, I’m now ready to take charge.
Good luck with your basil plant, hopefully it responds as well as the one on the video.
Excellent video and love the time lapse at the end. beautiful touch and well worth watching
Thank you for this. I have two basil plants in recovery mode now.
Good luck with your basil plants, they won't do much for the first week, but then they should start putting on lots of new growth.
Thank you very much for this video, so detailed! 🙌💛I wish I saw it years ago, a few basil plants could've been saved
Got to agree, that time lapse at the end made me hungry for pesto!! Nicely done and I can't agree more about splitting up that first pot of basit bought to start the season. Give your basil plants room to grow and "bush out".
Thanks, the smell of this basil plant filled the room as I filmed the time lapse. Yes they do so much better with more space.
1) Repotting to allow root growth.
2) Watering enough to keep the compost moist (NOT wet).
3) Compost with nitrogen to boost leaf growth.
4) Grows best 20-30°C with moderate light.
wow - brilliant. Can't wait to try out those tips. I love the time-lapse at the end.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video, good luck with your basil plant.
repotted one already@@Gardeningat58N
Wow, what a remarkably thorough and info packed video! Thank you for sharing! I grow basil in my garden every year and currently tried started them inside from seeds this year! Proud to say in 2 weeks, my basil is about 4 inches tall already!
My God....this was so satisfying to watch. Now I know it's possible. Thank you very much for posting!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video, it's amazing how resilient basil can be and if given the correct growing conditions it can make a surprisingly fast recovery.
Separating them into their individual plants when you buy them really helps too, Charles Dowding did a great video on this last year or so I think
Was searching how to recover a build system, but this works too
Great video, mate! Thorough and well explained each step of the way. The time-lapse of you pruning is very helpful and goodness me what a transformation! I'm currently doing the same to my basil plant that was worse for wear from being indoors without adequate light. Cheers
Thanks I'm glad you found my video helpful. Good luck with your Basil plant, hopefully it makes a quick recovery.
@@Sophie-ev6ol I'm happy to hear that!
That's great, I'm glad you managed to bring your plant back to good health.
Thanks for the tips, hope I can bring my plant back to life.
Thanks, I hope you were able to bring your basil plant back to life by using my tips.
Wow
I learned so much watching this.
I love how informative your dialogue is.
Keep pushing good content into this world 🌎
The time lapse was amazing to watch. Thank you.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my time lapse.
Wow, that is brilliant! Thank you for doing that and explaining so clearly and especially for the timelapse!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video and time lapse, I always try to include time lapse footage in my videos when I can.
That timelapse was really awesome! The info in the video was great too. You might consider posting the timelapse as a short or another video!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it, that's a good idea, I may do that.
I have one look just like that which I had over winter last year. Thanks.
Hopefully you were able to restore your plant, basil really struggles over winter, without extra heat or grow lights my plants struggle to survive winter even on my sunniest windowsill.
Wonderful timelapse! Thanks.. It gives me confidence to grow Basil as i slways thought it was a delicate plant. ❤
Best video ever. No BS straight tot the point and wonderful idea with showing recovery in time lapse.
Thank you for this incredibly informative and wonderful video! :) It is so helpful!
Thanks, I'm glad you found my video helpful.
Omg that timelapse is like magic happening. I've been really struggling with basil for a decade now. Might give it a try again, just sunlight and temperature might be an issue
Beautiful plant! Nice work! This has been quite helpful :)
I cant believe it grew that much in a month hahaha Mine has been trying to grow a couple leaves for 6 months already :(
incredibly informative!
Hopefully this time your basil plants will thrive.
