Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :) - Хобби
"This usually doesn't grow this time of year" - Plant looks fantastic
"Never tried this before, no idea what'll happen" - Plant looks fantastic
"Just an experiment, might not make it" - Plant looks fantastic
"Just came up by itself, might have to rip it out" - Plant looks fantastic
Joe McCall Hahaha True summarization 🤣
That was a really wonderful tour, and i've seen many. Well done and best wishes for your restructuring work. I also have no winter since emigrating from UK.
Right!?
you see he put his bits of his mother in law in the beds
Lol
4:16 “probably pick that up later”
“... no I probably won’t” lmfaoo this man is too real
Read this before it got there. 🤣
Perfect. Classic move
The best sarcasm
Your channel is awesome, without people like you, the world would be a horrible place
The world is a horrible place. Nice garden though.
We are all like that in Queensland 😋

Olá bom dia adoro seus vídeo parabéns bjs
I had to laugh. When you gave the temperature range for your Winter I thought that's just the same as our Summers. Yes! I am in the UK 😄
ruclips.net/video/9UPq0FanXPg/видео.html
Well. More like our mid to late Spring weather. Typically in the midlands where I live. Summer will be 20s and even get up to high 30s
@@sshep86 Im in Mid Wales and for the last 2 weeks its been 8C every morning! Despite the very hot days.
Susan Hills Yeah. Temps dropped this week. Getting around 10 to 13 highs here in Lincolnshire. But back up to low to mid 20s by end of next week. But like I said, this is spring temps. We should be getting much higher mid Summer.
Can I grow lettuce in 34 temperature?
Wait, I need a video of your seed organizer!! Or more time over it! I love how organized it is even though you only showed 2 seconds of it!
You so cute
Your channel is always relaxing and informative
Here I sit behind my monitor at midnight with some microwave sausage patties. Watching this guy with all his plants really makes me want to feed myself better.
I just love your videos. You've inspired me to start a small container garden on our back deck up here in New Hampshire, USA. To keep costs down, using rain gutters to grow leaf lettuce, an assortment of lid missing Tupperware, buckets, and trash cans to grow tomatoes, peppers, bush beans, mini eggplant, potatoes, and french carrots. It's coming along so well that my hubby is talking about getting us a Birdies raised bed for next year! YES!!!
I’m in New Hampshire too! Yay!
Containers are really amazing. My family had low expectations then a few dozen 10oz tomatoes later they're all in
Beautiful! It’s work but I’m on a planting craze in Northern California. 🤷♀️♥️
Ok, he’s got a filing system for his seeds!! I love that. It appeals to my gardening side and my organisation side.
I get so excited when You upload. I like your humor and i like the way you film. Thank You For giving me so many useful tips!
Mate!
The deck looks fantastic!
WellMet I know! I’m jealous.
Yes it does! Very nice. Everything! ♥️
Indeed Mate! 👍🏾
Was about to go to bed, it's 12:41 am here in trinidad... But can't hit the sack without watching a new upload from SSM!
When you figure out a way to grow some extra time, please let me know.
there is one way, you have to quit your job
If you want to grow extra time. I recomend schedules. Time managment on the farm is critical. As a market gardener i schedule things pretty close so i can have time off now and then. Lol
Thyme grows like weeds here
MrBucky338 🤣
MrBucky338 😂🤣😅
Hello Mark. I live in Michigan and your gardening tips have help me with my garden. I know it’s not the same climate, but most of your tips are the best. You are my main gardening channel. Hope to see lots of garden updates and tips this year. Stay Safe.
Wisconsin here! Mark and SSM is what made me start gardening! This is my first year and so far my garden is absolutely thriving :)
Hey Luke, I live 300km north of Mark, in Queensland Australia.
Used to work with a bloke from Michigan, top bloke. Used to tell me about Michigan, beautiful place, got to go and have a look one day. Peace 👍
Mitchell Schreiter I love all of the first time gardens. Mark inspires me to go big or go home. His info is good, you just have to adapt it to the season. Hot or cold. 🤣
Mark your playlists are making my weed grow faster than rnz radio 😳 ... by the way the backround aussie birds are a gem!
Winter, you say? *laughs in Canadian*
Fantastic Mark!
Also fantastic, person managing Kevin's account 😃
"Unless you give it a go, you just won't know"
Right on Mark, Great video as always!
Awesome video Mark from another Mark. That is going to get old I know but so are we hahaha 😂 ok I'll stop now. Man I wish we didn't get some cold in the winter well some times we can. Have a good night from Texas
And Mark you’re one of my biggest inspirations you encouraged me to start garden and get chickens thanks
I love you videos about gardening and your sense of humor in the video
Man because of you i was inspired to start growing stuff. I an currently growing a dragonfruit cactus, some herbs, and some bell peppers.
I am growing some sweet beans and they all started to have blighted leaves like my tomato's. One web commentator said they might be short on Supfur, so I put my Blueberry's elemental Sulfur down and the new growth is all clear of blight. Perhaps hay/mulch gardens can be low on Sulfur. Put some under my potted capsicum and bullocks heart tomato as their leaves were blighting too. And the new leaves there are solid green now too!
G'day ... Here on the other side of the world it's about the same weather right now ... Washington State coast ... Summer might get up to a balmy 80°f ... But not for long ... Save the punky wood to add fill to the new beds ...
All mine are in pots as I don't have a yard ... Just a gravel parking lot ... Onion ... Garlic ... Mushrooms ... Chives ... Mint ... Corn ... Crook neck squash ... Potato ... Tomato ... Sweet peppers ... Strawberry ... Raspberries ...
Turn the parking space into a gAWDen.
you know you need a patch of corn to get proper pollination?
king james488 no you don’t you can pollinate it yourself,
@@kingjames4886 nope ... A trio of 24 inch pots with 5 in each ... Makes for easy hand pollinating ... I hand pollinate tomatoes and squash too ...
@@jameswitte5167 I'm sure there are no bees.
Hey Mark we live in Florida so we have the same climate , but opposite times of the year we now are getting into summer and this is the first year we are planting a garden thank you for the tips !!!! Karl and Lori B. !!!!
New gardener in central Florida. I'm taking notes on what will grow next season 😊 I'm hopeful for the plants I'm growing currently, started them a few months late. I didn't know, but I do now. I hope your plants do well.
@@cammydunn2675 I'm late too , hope yours does well also !!!
Hi to both of you 👋 I’m in treasure coast myself. make sure to try sweet potatoes, Seminole Pumpkin, Seminole tomatoes and Malabar spinach. Here in Fl, they do great!
Thank for the tips im on the treasure coast as well annd this os my first year. Pretty excited.
I started my urban vege garden a year ago and learned so much. I am based in South Africa so our seasons coincide. I love your videos. They are not only instructive, but you always make me laugh :)
I want to say a big thank you for your videos. I used to garden a lot as a child but somehow forgot along the way of growing up that it was a passion of mine. This pandemic brought me back to the soil, and now caring for my little garden has become the best part of my day. Your videos have been a major help to me in re-training my green thumb, and they've also doubled as a nice distraction when things have gotten too much in the world. Thank you so much! :)
Mark, you definitely inspire me to get out into my garden everyday. I really appreciate your knowledge and tips. Cheers from the USA.
Same here...Cheers from Poland :)
Jarosław Polański nice!
I'm tickled pink to see this upload within 10 minutes !!! Thanks for the great content
Oh wow. I'm not too far from yourself ... out in Ipswich but we drop quite a bit here. We'll definitely start getting frosty nights heading into winter and if Stanthorpe have copped a cold day, we feel it here. My poor basil almost had a heart attack a few weeks ago but I got him inside in time. 😁 Other than that, I've got the rest of the herbs ready with framed frost/wind protection setup. 👍🌿
I’m only five minutes into the video and I’m already impressed by the number of volunteer plants: lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, etc, it’s almost like you don’t need to do any gardening . :)
Being an English man I normally happy waking up to a cuppa tea, but today i got a bonus... tea and this! Nice one
You made me start now I have over 200 plants
Amazing walk about.
Amazing variety's mate, the garden is looking amazing! I have to admit you do make us jelous with the crazy stuff you can grow on the other side of the pond! Cheers from a UK gardener! 👍😀
Like the clappers. I haven’t heard that one for years
Was overwhelmed with my seeds that i was saving, until I just saw your filing system! Thanks :)
8:25 this is a great tip for intermediate gardeners.
I never want to thin or move a guy that's happy growing.
But sometimes you just gotta rip them out to grow more stuff for the proper season
This is especially affordable when you've been collecting seeds for some seasons.
Awesome vids as always mark.
I was just about to ask where in QLD you are. I'm in central Gold Coast so it's good to have a channel to watch that is local and not in the US lol
Keep up the great work, Mark! You inspire all of us back yard gardeners and your presentations are always informative and fun!
Being a local. Love this sort of content.
my favorite line "Unless you give it a go...You just won't know!"
Mark, have you tried to grow okra? It's a subtropical plant, so it's supposed to grow well out there. I was trying to grow it in Victoria, but it definitely needs more sun time and warmth.
There is definitely an okra video on this channel from a few years ago @MrSlavaoat
I absolutely love your videos , you seem like the type of person every man should be , strong but yet loving , thank you my friend .
Brilliant content loads of useful information and really top bloke 👍
You don't live far from me at all so I love the "custom" growing advice! Thanks!
I kinda feel like eating salad now thanks to you.
Filling the bottom with wood scraps was a game changer. I have “tons” of forest scraps and I was able to solve two problems at the same time.
I appreciate what you’re doing for the earth and for the advice you give in your content have a great day
Thank you for the nice video. Reminds me of mid to late spring in Germany.
Ay big fella, what you wanna be doing is getting a barrel cutting some holes in it and making a damn good fire mate, nothing better than a few brews and a nice fire in winter, good time to grab the missus and burn off all the shit. Keep up the good work from you south mates here in Illawarra.
Such a happy good news channel. A great distraction from an otherwise worrying stressful scary planet. Thank you! Could watch for hours.
What a great view at the end of the day from your renovated deck.
When I lived in the Peace River Country of British Columbia Canada your normal winter day was a normal summer day for me...
You inspire seniors to enjoy gardening again
What a lot of work you are doing Mark. It's hard t o believe it will be even better than before. Thank you for all the great advice. I always look forward to your videos.
Second comment after watching all!! THAT WAS ONE OF YOUR BEST DOWN TO EARTH TO HOW YOUR GARDENING IS JUST LIKE HOW I GARDEN!!! Thank you
Summer weather in Scotland, where I live is your winter temps. It's 8c now ! 😆
Nick MG Wow I hate the cold so I feel for you, how on earth do you live like that? Sorry, I don't mean to be rude but to me that is depressing.
Love the recycling of your wood
The new deck looks great!
I'm not much of a gardener or anything, but my dad showed me your channel and I have to say I love it. It's like watching a video from a friend, you have a wonderful personality! Much love ❤️
Mark, I love your passion and energy! Great video as always. Keep them coming.
We got a raw deal, I'm only a couple hours from Bris and we frost regularly. Already had 3 :( coldest we've recorded from memory was -8
I live in Toowoomba and since were already getting 3°C mornings, I imagine winter is going to get frost. 🥶
Well we have had a few frosts but Stanthorpe is known for that. Not that far from Brisbane either.
-8!!!! That is too cold for Qld! Ripped off!
Grow apples
Just show this channel to my mum she loves it 😋👍👍
Wow, you've been very busy. Thank you for the tour. 💐🌹
Egyptian spinach is amazing. I have 3rd generation seed ready to go for late spring
I love your videos :) Always watching. love from the Philippines :)
Probably similar to a good summer in england! 😂 I was literally just thinking that! At 22 Celsius we're all in shorts and t shirts and sunbathing 😂😂
You must have read our minds. My wife and I were just asking exactly that question.
I was waiting for a video and finally
That's our summer temp here in Canada, Mark 😂 Ow well.. Enjoyed the video. As always, very inspiring and entertaining 👌
Your videos are always really helpful. I cant wait for the next.
Love your garden. Good luck with the construction. Never stop growing. Your videos remind people in troubled times that there is more to life than politics and chaos. Keep them coming.
" if ya don't give it a go,you just won't know" wise words 👍
Ha ! Youre correct about a British Summer ( Im British )
However I'm in the same climate and was feeling at a loss with the cold weather.
Thank you Mark !
We have summer now in Finland (at last) for a few months. At the moment about 20 Celsius by day, 10 or less by night 😂
That's not a habitable climate. ;-)
4:21 😂 the honesty
Didn't even read the title when I clicked on the notification and I was like "Hey, another building project, nice!" at 3:00 lol.
Hey mark! Just wanted to say thanks heaps mate for all the inspiration over these covid times. Since watching ya videos ive set up a decent vegtable garden for myself and am continulaly working towards my dream of setting up some acarage in cairns in the following year or so. Keep it up, your influence deffinitly inspires some of us younger generation who i feel are losing touch with our roots ( no pun intended )
You are growing so many great veggies. Stay safe friend 😊
I have a pea recommendation. We grow a few of the traditional peas in our spring and fall but the one that we love to grow in the spring is called "Wando". It is a heat tolerant variety that we are able to grow into a bit of our summer extending our pea harvest for a bit longer. We live in central Georgia in the States and have a wicked long summer season but those Wando will grow for a good 3-6 weeks longer than the traditional peas. Love your videos, wife giggles at me each time she hears your intro. God Bless
Thanks for the tour Mark. Our temperature range at the moment in Darwin is around 19 to 32. Too warm for a lot plants, have given up on normal coriander, but the sawtooth variety is doing ok. Other plants are thriving - sweet potato, rock melon, water melon, zucchini, snake beans... mostly using raised beds because our soil is so poor. Lock down has given me the time to go hard in the garden... enjoying your channel!
I'm only up the road from you in mfield. My zuchhs and cucumbers have started to set fruit, mine are in 300mm pots so I'm sure yours will thrive!
Good day! And thank you so much for taking the time and energy to share your valuable information. Please send more information about how to store seeds once you harvest them and how you plant them once they come out of storage. Do you soak them, refridgerate them, etc? THANKS!!!
Thanks for another Great video! Lots of inspiration
Such an inspiration!
Thank you for information
Love your videos. You’re a true inspiration
Good to see you!.
Great video! Thanks for sharing
Love your gardens
Love the video!!! Keep it up!!!
I just stumbled on this channel, and by God this is one of the greatest channels I've ever seen. It's so informative, but also so entertaining! I've been binging on your videos all day Mark, and online window shopping on the things I NEED to DIY some of my own sustainable produce! Thanks so much Mark for breaking down these tough topics to easily consumable courses!
Love your videos man keep it up!
Your winters are like our summers
All looking great mate, well done
Love this video, youre the best .Thank you for sharing❤
Awesome video! Such an informative channel!!
Love all your videos! And you new deck looks fantastic!
I like the British weather joke! I'm watching this video to see what I could grow here in the UK during summers.
