My fiancée and I are getting married in a week and do a lot of indoor gardening. Our goal is to be growing all of the herbs we cook with by the end of the year, the basil was what I started us with. Mostly my idea but she looovvveess harvesting basil and I'm glad for her involvement in my favorite hobby/future career.
That's so awesome Michael, love it! For our best friends, we actually grew mint centerpieces for their wedding reception. It went with one of their desserts and was such a cool idea! Hey, best of luck, you got this! 🙂
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms such a cool idea and mint grows so quickly! Did you let them take home the mint plants?
@@sparkymikey25 I think it's generally understood that guests at weddings can take the centerpieces.
I love fresh basil I never knew until this year.! I went on with rosemary plants and oregano, oregano died totally my fault. The Rosemary on anyting is pretty good potatoes for some reason being the best. Herbs can add a lot of depth that my forty-year-old ass never realized. Easy to grow and doesn't take up any room comparatively.
Haha, perfect timing as always, Jeff.
I've got a bunch of basil plants growing in solo cups in my garden window. They're all 8"-10" tall, very bushy, ready to snip & make a big batch of pesto or new plants. I took a few to my coworkers & told them what to do for endless basil, gave them a little course in growing/propagating herbs, and they're totally psyched. 😊
Right on! Love it! So much Basil, so much awesomeness!
Thank you Jeff
Dude I just discovered your channel and I've been BINGING. SO much good info - thank you!

I love you videos for basil the best…very informative and detailed. Thanks🙂
Yes! Awesome.
Another great and informational video.
Thank you
Grew sweet basil for the first time this year. They only took two days to sprout and due to my error, they took a month to start growing their second set of true leaves. Finally corrected my mistake and boy did they take off. Now they are on their second round of flowers while I have the first dozen flowers drying for seed harvesting. Bees have been loving their flowers.... while the caterpillars and snails have been loving the leaves but I have so much basil that they aren't harming my plants. All the caterpillars have disappeared though but the basil has been remaining strong. The 100°F temps haven't really affected them so long as I keep their soil moist. Will plant them against next year that's for sure. Surprised me with how resilient and hardy they are.
May i ask what the mistake was because ive started to grow basil too and it grows very slowly maybe i did the same mistake? Sorry to ask that after a year
Great attitude, great video!

I'm also growing a lemon tree from seed. Its about 10 inches now. My mint is in a pot on the patio and is insanely large. I got it from a grocery store for $1.99 at only 4 inches. In one month it's almost 2 feet. Its in a big pot. It's very happy. My basil will be growing indoors and cuttings in glass. Now i know what to do. As well as in my pasta dishes. Best of luck! I do find that eventually Basil plants just wear out and you have to start again. With the cuttings, just start new plants in the last few weeks of summer and you should be good to go all winter! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thanks - I just went out and cut some stems. I could not find any without flowers, so I cut off the flowers. Hopefully those stems will still root!

Wanted to provide an update. Yes the basil stems with flowers (that I cut off) did root. They have grown into absolutely beautiful plants, and I havested some fresh leaves for pizza this past week! Growing completely indoors on a windowsill. I have hope for a successful winter-long harvest of fresh basil!
I'm going to try this I have a beautiful basil plant I bought from the store that wants to die maybe I watered it too much but it's savable because I'm going to cut the cuttings and put them in water like you said this was a great video I really enjoyed it I've been trying for two summers to keep my basil growing
You can DEFNITELY do this! Get those cuttings rooted and you'll be back up and running with new plants in no time! :-)
Man I love this dude. 😂
Thank you so much! Appreciated!!
Thanks to you Jeff, transplanted all 19 cuttings (with root nodules formed) into my first ever made soil. So much new for me. Super excited. Thankyou for your wonderful channel. Questions I had 1) after cuttings transplant, how long before I seaweed folio spray? 2 after cuttings transplanted, do I need to mulch or that's only when they transplantinto next size pot (? 2 gallon) /garden bed? 3 presoak of 2hrs did not wet the soil on top. I used peat v coco fibre as that's what I had. It took 48hrs before top was wet in 4 inch pot. Is this correct or did I make mistake Thankyou for all your help. I've been making home made gnocchi basil (%it's ricotta, fetta and only sprinkle of flour).
pretty good. you’re funny. thanks

Indoors or outdoors Jennifer?
I thought the jelly of the month club was the gift that keeps on giving?? Lol In all serious i had no idea Basil was so easy to propagate! I love the stuff. I need to try this. Thanks Jeff.
Even indoors too, trust me, you got this! :-)
The video is beautiful and educational.
In the video you are showing the watering from the bottom when planting from the seeds. I would like to ask how long you can water it this way? In my case, I planted the basil from the seed and I'm watering it from the bottom - putting some amount of water in the dish and the pots with basil in it. After few weeks I repotted it in a bigger pot and I'm still using the same method of watering - from the bottom. But I noticed that the stem is becoming week and unstable with brown color at the lower part of it. I assume it is from overwatering. What is the time I normally should stop watering it that way?
Thanks ;)
Nice video... How about cutting Cilantro
So 1 person either accidently hit the dislike or just hates Basil.... No way they didn't like your video man.
Ha ha, the REAL McCoy! Thanks buddy!
Can you do an episode on dill and how to continually harvest?
Ha ha you read my mind...its already underway!!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms My problem with growing dill mainly in pots is the white fungus that appears on the soil and leaves. Maybe you can give us some tricks if there’s a way to avoid the fungus.

I saved a store basil that was looking really sad not even knowing what to do with it. I pruned it all the way down put the stems in water and it has taken off! The leaves are so tasty that I want to grow more. Now I know how thanks!
Right on Dee! That's how its done! :-)
This is my first successful year of growing basil. I've tried off and on over 4 decades to no avail. I think it is because I started them from seed instead of buying a few plants. We ended up with more basil than needed and unfortunately most of it went to seed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Next year I'll propagate some so we can have it in the house over the winter months. Take care!
Right on Michael, glad to hear you had a big bounty! Did you try to dry any or freeze some?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Can you dry basil or freeze it after it has gone to seed and still have good flavor?
@@michaelmarchione3408 It'll have the same flavor as when it was unfrozen....but once Basil goes to seed, the flavor changes dramatically....and not in a good way! Freezing isn't going to help that.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks for the reply!
@@michaelmarchione3408 no worries, best of luck!
Question
Do you have a good use for the flowers? I know I see where people maybe use them in teas because they are supposed to be a potent source of flavor.
I trimmed my plants and put the leaves in the dehydrator last night, but obviously I have a pile of flowers and small leaves
❤
Do you need to fertilize basil? In the fall when preparing the pot to bring in for February planting I add blood meal. What about ferts during the growing period?
Just had some today with an avocado and a nectarine. Original recipe uses peaches, but the nectarine was so good. I use to make a vinaigrette dressing, but it's really good with just a fork. 😊
Sounds amazing!

Hi, thanks for the video! Just wondering, when pruning the plant, that creates two extra stems that grow out, and on top of that extra stem is another one of those nodes that can be pruned. How does one keep the basil from getting taller and taller since at every prune, the stem segment increases by one? Thanks!
Actually, if you don't prune, the plant will get super tall and skinny. By pruning, yes new nodes come out, but they are easy shorter and they double in number. Pruning is the ONLY way to prevent the basil plants from becoming taller and taller! :-)
Jeff, perhaps any video of Oregano?
Definitely! I got a couple of HUGE plants growing now, I should get a video on them soon. :-)
Can you tell me which month is better for those cuttings you showed in this video please ? I only can use pots . i am from malta eu and i love basil , mint and also parsley which very strong in Mediterranean and i just started from late last year . Thanks again And keep up the good things .
Hey Mario! Basil is a mint my friend....as such, it'll root at ANY time. Its highly prolific!!
Quick question. Do you grow one plant per pot or grow a few in the same one? Are basil ok to densely plant?
I am Italian by marriage and we love basil!
Ha ha those who know....KNOW! :-)
I never knew that it is so easy to grow basil and can be propagated as well. I wonder if I can propagate basil bought from supermarket?
1000% you can. The Basil in this video was FROM the supermarket! If you are talking about the already-cut stuff.....be aware, that once cut, the Basil needs to go into water right away. The stems at the store have likely been cut for too long...but its worth a try!

@@nathanaelivanche3821 nice! I gotta try some of that indoors this winter!
One question I have is when could you have potted those cuttings? You waited until day 26, with huge roots, but at day 6 you had small roots, which i wonder if you could have planted it then and it would have been fine? It did seem that the roots were a little small , but I think they might make it, I'm not sure. It would probably be best to wait a little longer. 26 days seemed too long. Those were some huge roots.
Hello! New subscriber here! 😊
Just wanna ask if what is the indicator that I may transfer it to the final pot? thank you 🙂,
also, up to when do you delay its flowering to prolong its life?
thank you 😊
Hey Jason, thanks! I replant them into their larger pots when their roots have filled the current container. Some people go by leaves....say 4-5 nodes of true leaf sets....but roots tell the story. By constantly topping the leader shoots off, you are delaying flowering the whole time. That's the best way to do it, rather than waiting for the early signs of a flower stalk and quickly cutting it off....by then its too late and the plant is dead set on flowering mode usually.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Wow thank you so much. You are awesome 😁👍

Loved the video, I love fresh basil but I'm TERRIBLE at keeping plants alive, I just bought 4 varieties and not knowing any better they are reaching seed, so thats terrifying, going to trim them in the morning now that I know thats a no no

Basil basil basil more basil
Yes, Yes, and YES! :-)
its interesting they dont like overwatering when they do so well in water
Right? All the mints in fact are like that.
Question...my house is in the high 60s...how do I keep the seeds at 80-90?
2nd question...can you plant the seeds directly into a larger pot?
hey Jeff what variety of basil do you like (grow)
Sweet, large leaf genovese
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks . Last year I bought a basil from I think home hardware (my first basil) did not know the type (rookie mistake) it was beautiful big leaves produced crazy good. This year got one from a local nursery I forget the type but do have it wrote down. very small leaves nothing like the first one. Big bummer .. will start my own from seeds now.
btw.. How is the lifespan of the ones that is from the cuttings compared from the seeds?
Hey Jason...it basically re-sets the plants....so almost as long. Sometimes they flower a bit earlier, but I wonder if that's more of a seasonal change because you're taking a cutting later on, rather than the plant being inherently older.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarmsOnce again Thank you so much! 😊
I always have beautiful basil plants unti I plant out into the garden. They are fully hardened off loving life in their potting soil mix but every year in the garden they decline ( growing under my tomato plants) . I am no dig, no till growing in raised beds.
Why does this happen? Living in Northern BC
Gotta be one of the variables has changed. My suggestion would be to plant them outside really young and let them grow into the spot, rather than transplanting larger specimens, no matter how hardened off they may be
What happens if you cut the sides and leave one long stem ?
You get weak, tall, spindly plants that stop producing and eventually flower.
Can I set the Basel to set in plastic bottle.
Hey Valrie, yes, plastic works fine as well! :-)
