I also like rosemary for tea and to put in yeast rolls when I make homemade yeast rolls. I'm glad this video popped up in my recommended videos, my rosemary had outgrown the terra cotta pot I've had it in for years; this video reminded me that I used to take cutting and grow new rosemary plants, I had one out in my yard at my previous home that did get very big. I moved in 2021 and been so busy developing garden areas and working on the old farmhouse that is on my property that I totally forgot how lovely rosemary is in landscape! I'm now in northwest Florida 8b and loving it up in this part of the state.
I grow my rosemary in a large pot and prune it every few years to keep it lush and compact. My neighbour planted a single rosemary plant in her front garden and now it has overtaken about a third of the space. It’s a huge monster. She has it pruned once a year to prevent it from engulfing everything else. Your warning about its vigorous growing habits is a wise one.
I use the branches from pruning. I use woody parts and new growth but new growth roots way better. Take a whole lot of cuttings because not everyting will root. I put them in old used pottingsoil and keep the soil wet. Not moist but wet. Works like a charm. I've been doing this for years. When you want to take a big cutting you should layer a branch. I've used layering a couple of times with succes. I do like to leave it in the ground for about a year. Also when you plant the rosemary it likes poor sandy very good draining soil, little to no watering when it is established and preverably full sun. They like brick walls too because it retains heat at night. And when you prune them each year or every other year the bush grows more compact, has more new growth and looks nicer. That's just a my two cents from the experience I have with rosemary. It's a great plant and super easy. I primarily grow it for the scent and looks.
@@katvsdaedreamz8628 After bloom is when I usually prune. Late may, early june. But they can be pruned year round if you want to.But if you want flowers late may early june.Don't cut the whole shrub away but it can take a heavy pruning if necessary.
Thanx themadsamplist! Poor, sandy, well-drained soil for sure! Interesting about the layering! Thank you so much for sharing. I am starting to wonder if Rosemary is like my raspberries in that rooting in soil is a better option than straight water? More air, contact with natural hormones in the soil.. Etc. Food for thought!
@@katvsdaedreamz8628 I prune early morning as studies have shown that the rooting hormones are highest in the apex (top) of the plant at that time of day!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I don't like rooting in water and get bad results when I try it no matter what plant. And when I do have success I find the transition to soil difficult for the plant. I always use pottingsoil and usually used pottingsoil. That doesn't tend to harden up and doesn't dry out as much. And I keep it wet. Works for me and I've been doing it for years now with rosemary, sage, butterfly bushes, conifers and more. And I like to cover the soil with moss, bark, twigs, leaves and stuff like that to reduce evaporation of water. And I keep them in the shade. Just stuff I found out by trying.
"Rosemary is dead easy to grow from cuttings." Well with my cuttings, the word "dead" definitely seems to be correct sir! Haha! I took several about 6 weeks ago and put one in water and the rest in general purpose compost. The one in water was about to be evicted and sent to the great herb garden in the sky as I thought it had rotted but just in time I noticed three tiny roots appearing so it is now on parole! As for the others, they seem to be static with little black bits on the ends of their leaves so I have cut them back a bit in the hope that the other end might grow roots (if they have not already done so!) I read that stressing cuttings sometimes encourages growth so I have cursed at them frequently but rather than being stressed I do not think that they are taking me seriously and they have lost the will to live! Incidentally I am in UK.
@@g.e.boroush5176 Well GEB there have been more deaths I am sorry to say but (without wanting to tempt faith) three are still with us in "the land of the living" so far! As for a thyme cutting, it has joined the great herb garden in the sky for some reason. I am not sure if it died through lack of water but my understanding was that it was supposed to prefer arid conditions! Perhaps it was in some pact with the Rosemary and decided to "give up the ghost"? On the other hand, several thyme plants in the garden have been well and truly watered recently and they are looking decidedly ill so in no time there will be no thyme at this rate. On the bright side, some mint looks as though it wants to cover the whole of Northern Europe so "win some, lose some" as they say. I was planting things for the benefit of the bees, butterflies, birds and beasts but it has been so hot then so wet I think most of them have decided to emigrate to a country that knows what sort of weather it wants and sticks to it!
@@georgealderson4424 Sounds about right for my area in the west of England. 😂 I knew well enough that mint was very prolific but put just a tiny weak looking bit in my big oak half barrel with other herbs that were well established and it’s taken over. I thought the sage monster growing like crazy would be a good contender to keep it at bay but how wrong can you be. It was the pot I originally bought for a bay tree that was only growing really slowly with small leaves that kept being eaten by various insects. At least that is doing so much better with much bigger healthier leaves and doesn’t seem at all bothered by the fight for space around it between the other herbs. 😊
@@Pinkfox56 Haha. The battles continue. It's just as well that there is no noise from the garden fight or the neighbours might start complaining! It wouldn't be so bad if some plants fought to survive nevermind tried to take over. I planted various herbs for the benefit of the wildlife but I don't think they are impressed or even grateful as after an initial buzzy period they seem to have emigrated!
;'D The great herb garden in the sky! ;'D Yeah, I've been chewing out my pomegranate tree lately and it's not taking me seriously, either. It's in transplant shock and I'm afraid it's gonna die and every time I go out to say nice things to it, I wind up asking it why it can't just buck up and do what it's supposed to, as though I'm a parent of a depressed teenager in the 70s. Gardening is hard work!
Cooked with dry rosemary for the first time a few months ago and it smelled and tasted amazing. Made my whole apartment smell incredible too. I have a container big enough for a full sized rosemary plant so it looks like I'll be growing rosemary next year.

Thank you for this easy to follow video. We love Rosemary here in Ireland. We make our own sausage with rosemary and a few other herbs and spices. It makes for a delicious homemade egg and sausage "Mac"Muffin.
Thank you for this video. It’s very clear and easy to follow! I spent a pleasant time this afternoon doing exactly what you demonstrated. I just now put my two, clear glasses of rosemary sprigs-in-water on a safe windowsill, along with a little file card with dates on it that I will need to change the water and watch for roots. It’s amazing how happy doing this this simple little thing has made me. But then, gardening projects seem to have that effect on one, don’t they!
So awesome Jayne! Glad to hear that! I love these little easy projects where its not hours and hours of labor.....simple, fun, and then rewarding in the end!
I love rosemary and use it every day. I dry them then I grind them in the grinder to make a power and sprinkle iy in everything because it is anti aging, anti viral and has many good things on it. I even use it on my hand made soap as an natural preservative and my soaps last more than a year fresh. Thanks for the tip on how to grow them.
same here, appreciate the detailed video. am def not a green thumb n have limited knowledge, but curiosity & fascination remain. I've got a huge rosemary bush (which i fail to trim periodically) that seems to be growing heartily (zone 9b, clay soil😕). recently noticed that the bush has flowered. silly Q's, what to do with the flowers? n should I prune & separate the large bush, and/or up-root the rosemary n try growing new ones in the same spot? (I don't use them for cooking or other things, just growing them so they retain greenery to & repel unwanted pests, in the yard).
I’m following this right now! I hope I can get amazing rosemary! Thank you for this it was so simple! Based on these comments I think my rosemary will be successful! Thanks again! ❤
I love my Rosemary bush. It is blooming right now, in Texas in October. I use it in pizza dough, over roast pork and lamb. Thanks for the propagation tips. Going out right now to do it.
I actually started mine from grocery store cuttings. I wasn't sure if it was going to work since there is no telling how long they sat on the shelf but it worked! I now have three beautiful little roots growing out of the stem. I am so excited!
I have always pruned in fall, and felt defeated when it doubled in size again mid-spring! Pruning those new shoots in the spring seems much more effective, especially if I can pot them up to share. I prefer my rosemary ground to a fine powder, then used as a dry rub with black pepper on a pork loin, cooked long and slow in the smoker. 🤤 As a person with scalp issues, I can use it as a hair rinse to calm things down. Its high oil content makes for excellent homemade smudge\aroma sticks too!
Thank you so much for your informative video, especially for not pushing any products. Every video I have come across they push you to spend money here and there. I want something as natural and inexpensive as possible.

Thank you for your clear and informative video. I love rosemary and have attempted twice in small pot but failed. Surely I will start tomorrow with great confidence that I can make it as per your clear tips. Thank you
I wish I would have seen this video a month ago. I started rosemary from seed and ended up with 5 viable seedlings out of 500 seeds. I went to Home Depot for something else just recently and found a beautiful rosemary plant for $3.48....it's doing really well after being transplanted a week ago, while my seedlings are healthy, but growing soooo slowly. Thanks a lot for the easy tips. Simple and quick. I watched this because my partner just got me some freshly cut rosemary from the public garden. So I thought I need to grow more of my own. Easy enough, thanks for sharing. And good point about the rooting hormone. Survival of the fittest is a good thing for your cuttings Our rosemary always seems to croak over the winter - but I've never tried to heavily mulch them.
We're in NH. We see a typical 0 for a low, with a few days down to -15 here and there. Snow cover probably has a lot to do with it. If there's a lot of snow when it gets cold, the plants do ok. We had brutal cold snap 2 years ago (2 weeks sub-zero) but we had bare ground. It killed our magnolia (my favorite tree in the yard) and a bunch of other things that were well established
Oh, those temps were F, not C... I forgot you're one of our northern friends :) I'm going to try to look for a more cold hardy variety next time. The snow is a great insulator, and without it I think the roots freeze up a little too solid. Also, you're likely right - the soil would be exposed to the wind, and probably dries out more without snow, too.
Oak Knob Farm ha ha, yeah, it's all Celsius and metric up here! I would think though, that the varieties for sale in your area, even from the big box stores, would be MEANT for your area. Better yet though, hook up with a local colleague that has a thriving specimen, and ask for a cutting or two!
Thanks for your easy propagation of Rosemary. As I was wanting to make a small hedge of rosemary in my garden. I will try and strike some cuttings in preparation for this hedge. That I am planning for my garden.

I was told by a professional grower to make small cuttings, about 1 1/2 inch long, and pop it in the earth. You will have way more plants than if you take such a huge piece. I haven’t tried that method, but I will this year

what is the best way to prune? I live in FL, so the soil in my yard is poor sandy fast draining soil already
As for the others, they seem to be static with little black bits on the ends of their leaves so I have cut them back a bit in the hope that the other end might grow roots (if they have not already done so!)
I read that stressing cuttings sometimes encourages growth so I have cursed at them frequently but rather than being stressed I do not think that they are taking me seriously and they have lost the will to live!
Incidentally I am in UK.
SO funny! Let us know the outcome! haha!
I planted various herbs for the benefit of the wildlife but I don't think they are impressed or even grateful as after an initial buzzy period they seem to have emigrated!
;'D The great herb garden in the sky! ;'D
Yeah, I've been chewing out my pomegranate tree lately and it's not taking me seriously, either.

Thank you for this video. It’s very clear and easy to follow! I spent a pleasant time this afternoon doing exactly what you demonstrated. I just now put my two, clear glasses of rosemary sprigs-in-water on a safe windowsill, along with a little file card with dates on it that I will need to change the water and watch for roots. same here, appreciate the detailed video. am def not a green thumb n have limited knowledge, but curiosity & fascination remain.

I have a big rosemary bush in the garden that was grown from a tiny cutting given to me by my father-in-law. I'm ready to take my cuttings now!
Easy enough, thanks for sharing. And good point about the rooting hormone. Survival of the fittest is a good thing for your cuttings
Our rosemary always seems to croak over the winter - but I've never tried to heavily mulch them.
Whereabouts do you live? How cold are the winters?
We're in NH. We see a typical 0 for a low, with a few days down to -15 here and there.
Snow cover probably has a lot to do with it. If there's a lot of snow when it gets cold, the plants do ok. We had brutal cold snap 2 years ago (2 weeks sub-zero) but we had bare ground. It killed our magnolia (my favorite tree in the yard) and a bunch of other things that were well established
Yeah, wonder if they get either smothered out, or even dried out? Interesting stuff. I wonder if different varieties behave differently as well.
Thank you for your good ideas be blessed❤️🇿🇦
