You can cut the lemon stalks from the grocery to about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom. Let them sit in the water until a few new roots sprout out, then plant them 45 degrees, not upright. They will have thicker stalks, grow faster, and new baby stalks sprout out quicker.
I have done that. A year or so later, I had to hire someone to remove it - it was humongous and massive. The commercial variety must be more robust. Next time I will keep it in a pot.
I have always planted my store bought lemon grass in an upright position and they grow fine but the stalks are not large and they're not full and tall as Marcus has it. I'm gonna grow them at 45 degree angle this year. Thanks for sharing your tip Christine Nguyen
It does indeed repel mosquitoes. But you need to bruise the leaves to release the essential oils to get the repellant effect. Pick a bunch of leaves and scrunch them or twist them and lay them near where you are working. Or, after doing that, rub your hands, which will have residual lemongrass oil, over your arms, legs and face.
Hah! Great video. We are in northern California, grow zone 8. My wife is from Vietnam. A year ago, she purchased lemon grass in a local market and simply planted it in our back yard. Not only did it grow like crazy, it survived last winter. This past summer, we planted more. We had a summer of 40 C degree days. The more we watered, the more it grew. We now have an entire row of lemon grass. We cut it back all the time for use in tea and soups but the plants come right back. What a satisfying discovery. :-)

In the Caribbean this is commonly called fever grass. When we are sick we make tea and this helps reduce the fever. And it really does grow like a bush in our yards
I like to cook a lot of Thai food, but they don't sell lemongrass at the local grocery store, so I need to buy it online, making it one of the most expensive ingredients. So this video is really useful to me. I just bought a thousand lemongrass seeds for a little over a dollar and fifty cents. If it grows successfully in my backyard, this will instantly go from one of my most expensive ingredients to my cheapest. Thank you very much for this video. :-D
If you live in a state or area with Cambodians, Vietnamese and Thai community there's always Asian stores with Lemongrass available always. Because we use a lot of Lemongrass besides for Curry. But of course if we don't live in your area there wouldn't be stores there.
When you buy it from the store, you can grow more from it. They often have the root removed before it gets to market, which can be regrown, but you can chop the bottom .5 to 1 inch and sit in water. An easy rooter. Plus, they split easily. I have never been able to get the seed to grow for me. But don't be discouraged. I bought 1 stalk lol last fall. I don't have a batch yet (zone 55 so my baby is in a pot) but i got a cup of tea from trimming its leaves. You can do it!
I moved from NY to rural Virginia, and no lemongrass here, either! Strange, I can't find all sorts of stuff here in VA, at the supermarket, however, there are other foods that I never had seen, like cherrwine soda, and country ham, boiled peanuts...and weird meats. I guess every region has its local favorite food to stock! I miss having lots of ethnic foods to choose from, and certain stuff in NY, but that's about it! I don't miss the traffic! Tip #N, lemongrass also is planted around the houses or as fences to deter wild beasts such as tigers in southeast Asia countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Sumatra etc., in rural areas such as countryside and hills and mountainous landscapes. Typical Asian family cooking use lemongrass so often, we are accustomed to it. Yes, I was born in Vietnam and still cooking with lemongrass everyday ❤. Thought I’d shared.
Over here in Assam, India, tea planters use lemongrass as a fencing around the huge lengthy garden boundaries which serves also as a deterrent to snake invasion and infestation inside gardens.
My families in the countryside do the same too, they plant them on the edge of their lands (as fence substitute) to keep venomous animals and bad bugs away. We may learn it from the Indians a long time ago! 😊👍❤ (I live in Sumatra, Indonesia!)

I planted Lemon Grass seeds in Mar in a plastic tote. This video answered every question I had on what to do next before winter arrives. Thank You. BTW I'll be ordering the metal raised beds in a few month to take my gardening to new heights.
I buy them $1/bundle at Asian markets. Cut 3/4 of top off, stick the stalks on the ground. I get fresh lemongrass June-October in the Midwest (US) zone 5. I use the leaves tied up in bundles or a few 3" stalks with a few kaffire lime leaves as soup base especially fresh chicken soups. Also, I use stalks as skewers when doing bbq. You can also use chopped/minced stalks in marinades for pork and chicken.

Not invasive. For a container, I would plant 3 stalks (5-6 inch stalks) per 5 gallon container. You can root the stalks in a cup of water (cut off the hard end of the stalks, cover 1-2" in water and should root in 5-8 days).

I grow lemongrass in pots mostly for the leaves to make tea occasionally, but you've inspired me to put some in the ground. I've got a weedy, clay bound yard that seems to grow only plaintain, dandelions, clover and something sharp and pokey... I'd love to grow a border plant that was also edible. I thought about basil, but I like the idea of the lemongrass. I live in zone 7b so we get hard freezed a couple of times a year, so I guess I could pull it all out, and just replant it. I didn't know the leaves could be used as mulch. I'll consider that once I have an abundance. And I hope deer don't like to eat it. That is another reason I am balked in my garden expeditions , deer eat all of my progress and it's very depressing to do all that hard work just to discover it destroyed overnight.

Marcus, we grow it all year round, we live in the hot tropics, our soil is clay and it loves wet feet! Bit opposite to your tips but maybe different in your climate. We use it for fence lines and drains to filter and slow the water flow. You can sit it in water to start the roots or jut put it straight in the ground.
I live in Sumatra Island (Indonesia, tropical climate). Yes I agree with you, here we're also stick lemongrass in any DAMP soil and they will grow abundantly without any care needed. People planted them in public gardens/ponds so anyone in need can always take them for home cooking/medicinal purposes (personal/non-commercial use of course). It's believed to be some venomous animals and bad bugs repellent as well. I love using them the most in curries and stir-fries recipes. 🤤👍❤

The intro was awesome, I'm a movie buff but somehow Gladiator has slipped under my radar, but you've inspired me to watch it. The Gladiator reference near the middle of the video was pretty witty too, I have a real appreciation for puns and analogies. I am fr, Thailand I bought the lemongrass two-three bunches and put them in the water then waited until it rooted then plant it into the ground. Water and some plants food they grow well. As for the next yr I ( in winter ) I put the lemongrass in the good size bucket with water about five inches I keep it in my house until the next Spring. And I made Thais fried chicken wings with lemongrass it’s the best things….!
Thank you for the useful info. My family love lemongrass. We put it in Asian dishes; even making some hot or cold drinks as it has an aroma scent, it makes me feel relaxed every time I consume it. I have been planting lemongrass from seeds every year for 3 years in containers. I would say it grow massively quite easily with the right time and temperatures.
As it's a grass I wondered about your comparison with lucerne, a legume whose roots have nitrogen-fixing bacteria. A quick search on the internet shows lemongrass to be a nitrogen-hungry plant, so I guess if you've fed it the correct fertiliser to grow well, it will then have nitrogen in it to use as a mulch around trees.
The Russell Crowe bit gave me a chuckle. I recently found your channel and I’m so glad I did. You remind me of my Pa who I lost a few years ago. I’m always sad I can’t ask him about preserving vegetables, gardening and composting and all the self sufficient peaceful ways he lived his life in the mid north coast. You might be interested to know I grew it on the Central Coast of NSW with no problem...the spot did have good drainage, as you advocate. I am also growing it here in Sydney in a sunny, flat spot this time, but with free-draining soil. I didn't know to cut it back in winter, so now I will; makes total sense. Excellent tips; thanks.
I'm happy that we've managed to propagate 1 lemongrass into probably 100 heads now.. XD It's really one of the greatest achievements in gardening in my oppinion. The same with our sweet basils, started from 1, and is now 100's. both plants never seeded.
Yep. Still a great video. I acquired some starts this year from a local lady. I started 3 in each bucket and I now have 6 buckets that are doing very well. I've given away 2 buckets all ready and some of the original starts I purchased. I can't wait to divide and propogate. Hurray!!!
I live in Florida and the reason why I planted my lemongrass 2 years ago was to help with the mosquitoes. I literally laughed out loud when you said to help with mosquitoes but it doesn't lol 😂 Now here I am looking at RUclips for ways to use my lemongrass since it didn't help with mosquitoes at all!

I cut some off the top and have them sitting in water. Hopefully we will get some roots and I can plant them. Have grown lemon grass very successfully in Durban, South Africa. Leaves are cut into pieces, dried and added to tea for added flavor - mostly in winter for the added warmth. Your video was very informative. Keep up the good work. N

Did you figure it out? I'm in Oregon, so climate prevents year round garden for LG. However, he did mention you can keep inside during cold months and be sure to keep thinned and trimmed, so this is so far the best info I've found. You could do that with your balcony plants.

I love to use on soups everytime with keffir lime leaves, may it be on seafoods, chicken, beef and vegetables, and add fresh mince ginger and cilantro before putting off the heat and squeeze of lime juice, its really full of aroma and appetizing.
I started growing my lemon grass from cuttings I got at the supermarket. I forgot one on the counter and was surprised to see it growing right there, just like my ionions, garlic, and ginger. Whoa!

The best lemongrass tea is a blend of ginger and lemongrass. Very good to drink daily in winter. Nice video.

I grow lemongrass in pots mostly for the leaves to make tea occasionally, but you've inspired me to put some in the ground. I've got a weedy, clay bound yard that seems to grow only plaintain, dandelions, clover and something sharp and pokey...
I'd love to grow a border plant that was also edible. I thought about basil, but I like the idea of the lemongrass. I live in zone 7b so we get hard freezed a couple of times a year, so I guess I could pull it all out, and just replant it. I didn't know the leaves could be used as mulch. I'll consider that once I have an abundance. And I hope deer don't like to eat it. That is another reason I am balked in my garden expeditions , deer eat all of my progress and it's very depressing to do all that hard work just to discover it destroyed overnight.

Marcus, we grow it all year round, we live in the hot tropics, our soil is clay and it loves wet feet! Bit opposite to your tips but maybe different in your climate. We use it for fence lines and drains to filter and slow the water flow. You can sit it in water to start the roots or jut put it straight in the ground.
I live in Sumatra Island (Indonesia, tropical climate). Yes I agree with you, here we're also stick lemongrass in any DAMP soil and they will grow abundantly without any care needed. People planted them in public gardens/ponds so anyone in need can always take them for home cooking/medicinal purposes (personal/non-commercial use of course). It's believed to be some venomous animals and bad bugs repellent as well. I love using them the most in curries and stir-fries recipes.

Mark- I mean Marcus, you are really on the RUclips grind, pumping out content as fresh as your garden. The intro was awesome, I'm a movie buff but somehow Gladiator has slipped under my radar, but you've inspired me to watch it. I want to congratulate you on the amazing success of your last video, only in my dreams do I achieve that level of RUclips success. The Gladiator reference near the middle of the video was pretty witty too, I have a real appreciation for puns and analogies. The mosquito slaps really gave me a laugh... keep doing those and I might have to do a "Every mosquito slap from Self Sufficient Me" LOL. I have such a small garden that I'd rather grow other crops like tomatoes and peppers than lemon grass. But when I get my own 100 acre farm someday you bet I'll grow some. The truth is you never quite know if or when a video will go crazy and get picked up by the YT algorithm but what I do know is you have to be grinding out the content to give yourself the best chance. Likewise, I also enjoy your vids for the same reasons and I think to add a little fun into gardening content (which can be quite a dry subject sometimes) helps keep people interested. Lemongrass is so easy to grow, no need to root in water, I planted it directly into the ground/soil and it grow like wildfire.

I am fr, Thailand I bought the lemongrass two-three bunches and put them in the water then waited until it rooted then plant it into the ground. Water and some plants food they grow well. As for the next yr I ( in winter ) I put the lemongrass in the good size bucket with water about five inches I keep it in my house until the next Spring. And I made Thais fried chicken wings with lemongrass it’s the best things….!

Thank you for the useful info. My family love lemongrass. We put it in Asian dishes; even making some hot or cold drinks as it has an aroma scent, it makes me feel relaxed every time I consume it. I have been planting lemongrass from seeds every year for 3 years in containers. I would say it grow massively quite easily with the right time and temperatures.
As it's a grass I wondered about your comparison with lucerne, a legume whose roots have nitrogen-fixing bacteria. A quick search on the internet shows lemongrass to be a nitrogen-hungry plant, so I guess if you've fed it the correct fertiliser to grow well, it will then have nitrogen in it to use as a mulch around trees.

I recently found your channel and I’m so glad I did. You remind me of my Pa who I lost a few years ago. I’m always sad I can’t ask him about preserving vegetables, gardening and composting and all the self sufficient peaceful ways he lived his life in the mid north coast.
I think he would have enjoyed your videos and your dad jokes. He had a really hard life and found his happy place in the garden focusing on his health and well-being.

You might be interested to know I grew it on the Central Coast of NSW with no problem...the spot did have good drainage, as you advocate. I am also growing it here in Sydney in a sunny, flat spot this time, but with free-draining soil. I didn't know to cut it back in winter, so now I will; makes total sense. Excellent tips; thanks.
I'm happy that we've managed to propagate 1 lemongrass into probably 100 heads now.. XD It's really one of the greatest achievements in gardening in my oppinion. The same with our sweet basils, started from 1, and is now 100's. both plants never seeded.

Yep. Still a great video. I acquired some starts this year from a local lady. I started 3 in each bucket and I now have 6 buckets that are doing very well. I've given away 2 buckets all ready and some of the original starts I purchased. I can't wait to divide and propogate. Hurray!!!

I live in Florida and the reason why I planted my lemongrass 2 years ago was to help with the mosquitoes. I literally laughed out loud when you said to help with mosquitoes but it doesn't lol 😂 Now here I am looking at RUclips for ways to use my lemongrass since it didn't help with mosquitoes at all!

Awesome job on the video! My wife wants lemongrass in the garden. We couldn't find any at the local hardware stores, but she picked up some in the herb section of the grocery store. I cut some off the top and have them sitting in water. Hopefully we will get some roots and I can plant them. But soon enough running out of season (we don't even seem to have a summer this year). So now I know how to grow them. Will try to grow them in container too.

Have grown lemon grass very successfully in Durban, South Africa. Leaves are cut into pieces, dried and added to tea for added flavor - mostly in winter for the added warmth.

Did you figure it out? I'm in Oregon, so climate prevents year round garden for LG. However, he did mention you can keep inside during cold months and be sure to keep thinned and trimmed, so this is so far the best info I've found. You could do that with your balcony plants.

I love to use on soups everytime with keffir lime leaves, may it be on seafoods, chicken, beef and vegetables, and add fresh mince ginger and cilantro before putting off the heat and squeeze of lime juice, its really full of aroma and appetizing.

I started growing my lemon grass from cuttings I got at the supermarket. I forgot one on the counter and was surprised to see it growing right there, just like my ionions, garlic, and ginger. Whoa!

I got some lemongrass at the store in a container and transplanted into a larger container. It eventually greened back up after some leaves died a bit. However, all of it is narrow, no bulbs. What should I do to ensure my lemongrass grows thicker stalks?
