@@GaryEats Great you are both coming up North soon to do a review for us. May I recommend the 'Crown Bar' right in the city centre. It is the oldest or one of the oldest pubs in Belfast, dating back to the Victorian era. It's fitted out with Booths and Snugs and maintains the theme of that period. The menu is vast but the Irish Stew and Champ and Sausages onion gravy are my favourites. Great Irish quality and at very reasonable prices. I also agree with Trevor's recommendation. Longs is outstanding for fish and chips, and just across the road from The Crown. Just giving you the heads up. Take care. Sharon
We eat with our eyes and immediately on first look I thought the chips were undercooked and looked anemic, the batter looked awful and the scampi looked very appetising! And so it proved to be. I was hoping for a stunning 1st Irish review after the Ramsay scam/let-down, but at least the scampi saved the day!
A friend of mine several years ago set up a fish n chip shop. I couldn’t believe what is involved to produce great fish n chips. After months of researching, testing & trialing his product was excellent! I think most places become lazy & lose the love!
Hi Gary, I'm Irish and I can tell you that you didn't go to Leo Burdocks on a bad day. Irish fish and chips are very mediocre, I didn't know good fish and chips until I moved to the UK. Anytime I bought fish and chips in Ireland, I rarely ate the batter, always the same soggy and thick. I think you are right when you say they should cook the fish in the same batter as the scampi. I hope you enjoy your trip. I can recommend Shanahans on the Green for steak (pricey) and Sole for fish. A good pub meal can be had at Searsons on Baggot Street. (Reasonably priced) Enjoy 👍👍👍
In the 70s and 80s Burdock's was wonderful. This was before Dublin became a global tourist destination. Then, come the 90s, they expanded all over city to cater for the influx and changed their menu and cooking methods. They were one of the last chippers to continue cooking with beef dripping which improved the flavour no end. Sadly, no more. Also, smoked haddock was their stellar dish, not cod
I live in Ireland and I have to say it's pretty hard getting a really good fish supper. Not impossible but I think you're spoiled in England with good fish and chips shops.
@@Nvlarr that too general. You can't club the whole country together that way. Fish and chips in certain regions are amazing, in others terrible. I have found them better in the north and poorer in the south but even that's too general. Good luck trying to find a good fish and chips in Oxford!!!
When you opened the fish and chips, the paper sticking to the fish, the anaemic chips and sloppy batter would have had me returning the meal with a positive complaint and seeking a refund for what was a poor quality meal. You are a very tolerant man Gary.👍👍👍👍
Yes! I love when they serve the chips in the rolled up paper. So hard to find that anymore. Everything comes in those boxes now. Fish and chips is a childhood nostalgia food and not to be messed with.
I used to live in Rathmines in south central Dublin about 25 years ago and we had a Burdocks there. It was absolute quality , however judging by this video both portion sizes and standards have slipped !! Good to see you sampled the legendary McDonnells curry sauce....I stock up on it whenever I am back in Ireland now.

It's your honesty that makes your reviews so good. That's a real shame after making the effort to go there. I sometimes feel a bit sorry for an establishment, the quality could rise and fall with a simple shift change but at least it gives them info & the opportunity to improve. 🙂
Oh Kian you shouldn't have done that, that's so incredibly kind of you. Anything I can do, please email me and I would be more than happy to help. Take care and have a wonderful weekend
Lovely to see you in the Republic Gary. Dublin too far from Tipperary. Odonnells curry powder/ sauce is sold in the shops. Shall I be surprised about the batter, certainly not, happened loads of times to us. Tramore, best fish and chips, batter crispy, fab. At least the scampi was good. Great show again Gary😂
Can I just say that, being from Dublin myself, you weren't there on a bad day. The batter is almost always the same as that which you had. I've always found Burdock's over-rated - almost as if it was marketed to the nth degree. I don't believe Rick Stein's sincerity for that reason, too. Your review is completely fair and I'm quite pleased to see that because when Rate My Takeaway did the same place, Danny gave it "10 out of 10" and called the food (and batter) "outstanding". This is why your reviews are very quickly gaining pace. It's far more honest. I was furious when Danny gave that clearly misleading conclusion. Your review is 100% spot on, having eaten there several times over the past few years.
There is no bigger award than Gary's seal of approval, all the other ones mean nothing anymore, Mr Burdock can now really call his scampi award winning.
Looks like all the locals in the comment section are not surprised with the poor quality of the fish and chips that you had at that establishment. At least the scampi was good. Great review as always. Make it a great day everyone.
A moldovian family chipper called Romayos became the standard a while back. They have many franchises in Dublin. You'll often get a much better cod and chips in restaurants for some reason. As takeaways go, I also really rate 'Antonio's' of Cabra. Thanks for the great video Gary.
I'd love to see you do a compilation of all the fish and chips shops you've done on the channel and rank them in order. This would be helpful for anyone coming to the UK to plan their food tourism spots properly. Cheers and many blessings!
No Gary, whether they were busy or not, that batter and chips were not cooked properly. Our fish and chip shop in Tring heaves with customers and they cook theirs crispy and golden chips.
You talking about Ocean’s on Frogmore Street? I wasn’t so impressed the other week. I tried the Berko Station chippy last week where I had the plaice, battered sausage and some of the best chips I’ve ever had. Recommend.
I actually don't do much negative myself and understand you focusing on the positive. But sometimes, when things are really poor, I respectfully inform the vendor when I am not happy. It works for me.
I live in Leeds and when my family comes over from Ireland to visit, the first thing they want is fish and chips because they haven't got the hang of it in the chippers at home. You can't beat Yorkshire for fish and chips.
@@bobhul2543 100% agree…I actually think people only buy it because they get to unwrap the fish and chips instead of it being in a bag…there’s not an ounce of crispiness to be found…Irish chip shops are shocking…the battered fish is always part cooked and then reheated in the oil instead of being freshly dipped in batter and served
Hi Gary Yes those fish and chips looked shocking as soon as you opened the paper. They looked virtually inedible. The best things with it were the mass produced condiments which were the curry sauce and the tartare sauce! However, the scampi did look very nice and redeemed them some what but overall 4/10 for me. From what I can read they are living a bit on their reputation from the past and like a lot of eating establishments find it hard to maintain early excellence. Absolute rubbish, there are plenty of good eating places here in the west .Dublin is a tourist trap that gets away with ripping people off like this place and the pubs in Temple Bar .
A traditional restaurant known primarily for fish and chips is Steels Corner House in Cleethorpes. It’s been an institution for years and hasn’t changed since I was a kid. The jumbo haddock is superb and it’s well worth a visit. Give it a go, Gary when you’re next in the area!

Ah Gary... So disappointed (more ashamed being Irish myself) in your first review in Ireland. 😳 Agree on your thoughts 100%, re the Cod n Chips - batter very thick, doughy and undercooked. Glad the scampi was good, one of my favourites. Never heard or have been to a Leo Burdock takeaway I have to admit, but according to their website, have 6 or 7 shops in or around Dublin! Maybe an off day for the chef, but guess room for improvement guys if you are watching. Remember, criticism is good. Talk about curry sauce. Gary, when you are over here, really recommend picking up a couple of tubs of McDonnells 'Original' Curry Sauce. One of my favs, you will be pleasantly surprised. 😉 But hey, look on the bright side, can't get much worse 😜. Onwards and upwards my friend, may your journey ahead be prosperous and bountiful. Enjoy!
Hahaa! The quote by Rick Stein on the flyer had me laughing out loud! I've enjoyed watching Mr Stein's TV shows but there clearly seems to be something wrong with his concept of what a good serving of fish and chips should be! Glad you had a better experience with the scampy though, Gary. 😀😀

As a tourist from the Netherlands I believe I had some nice fish and chips at “The Red Lion Parliament Street” (next to Westminster). I usually don’t fancy peas. But even the mushy peas were very nice! Finished the whole plate!
Gazza, a fish and chip shop in Leicester I used to go to sometimes did exactly the same, and the batter always tasted slightly odd as well but I could never figure out what it was, whether it was yeast or something else. I can't describe it as 'vinegary' because there was no vinegar in sight, but something was off. But I loved the chunky pieces of bread with butter, and the chips were to die for. But fish is the star of the show, and if that is crap then all the supporting actors in the world cannot make it a 10/10 dish.
Gary, don’t judge Irish food by what you get in Dublin, it’s probably the worst place for food in Ireland, try the other cities and towns where the real taste of Irish food can be had, not the plastic Irish food in Dublin.
Dublin born & Bred here and I can tell you from many years of experience this is absolutely typical of Takeaway food all over Dublin. I wouldn't bother with any of it TBH.
When a chippy has to put up boards and give out flyers on the famous customers they've had you know it's gonna be shocking.....go where the locals go, not the tourists....in fact you need to come to Hull if you want proper fish and chips. Never the less, great review pal 👏👏
My local chippie Daniels only cooks fish to order, so it's always fresh, hot and the batter is light and crispy. For a professional chippie there's no excuse for poorly cooked batter, it ain't rocket science

Hi Gary love your content ……. I live in Dublin and you didn’t get Leo Burdocks on a bad day ……. These chippers live off their reputation of celebrities and the oldest chippers etc load of nonsense ……. Way over hyped and if you wine t back tomorrow or next week they will still serve you up the same crap fish and chips and think they are doing you a favour 😳 always keep your honesty that’s why we all love your channel 😀👍
I really appreciate that Jamie, I've not heard good things in the comments
Burdock's is a good sum up of modern Ireland, all about the money, quality comes 2nd now
Ah I see not good
@@GaryEats venture onto Irish rail and you'll see how bad it is, 20/30 years ago you could get a 5 star cooked meal onboard, now lucky to get a cup of tea
To be honest, I think that's true of everywhere now sadly. Money and profit first, quality of service about 10th in priorities.
@@Hoophey yep society is being dumbed down and demoralised so they are also more likely to accept poor service
I’d say second is a bit of a compliment. It’s a desert for decent food.
Next time you come to Ireland, come up north! I moved here 13 years ago and theirs some amazing eateries in Belfast and Antrim coast, particularly. Welcome to the Emerald Isle, our favourite channel! 🎉
It will be in about four weeks time
What do you think of mortens in Ballycastle? I love their seafood ❤
@@GaryEats If you make it to Belfast you must try 'Longs' fish & chips, you wont be disappointed, the most famous chippie in Belfast.
And Eddie Spence's though doesn't open for long hours - a real character though!
Didn't look particularly appetising
Spoons scampi is frozen but cheap and so good. Three buckets of scampi and a pint in spoons is a great night
My wife and I have followed you from day 1!! Love your videos! We've had some great recommendations from you! Don't ever stop!!!
Thanks so much Josh
A friend of mine several years ago set up a fish n chip shop. I couldn’t believe what is involved to produce great fish n chips. After months of researching, testing & trialing his product was excellent! I think most places become lazy & lose the love!
That’s a very good point thank you
The pigeons gave it an 11!
Great review. When a business relies on a list of famous people as a selling point, RUN!
A very good point
Dublin pigeons hit different especially city ones
Thank you very much for all the recommendations 👍👍🇮🇪
In the 70s and 80s Burdock's was wonderful. This was before Dublin became a global tourist destination. Then, come the 90s, they expanded all over city to cater for the influx and changed their menu and cooking methods. They were one of the last chippers to continue cooking with beef dripping which improved the flavour no end. Sadly, no more. Also, smoked haddock was their stellar dish, not cod
It’s sad it has changed for the worse Jim
No excuse that people are waiting in Line. Price is the same and it should be cooked perfectly evertime
Agreed
I live in Ireland and I have to say it's pretty hard getting a really good fish supper. Not impossible but I think you're spoiled in England with good fish and chips shops.
I think we might be as well, Whitby in particular
No mate. I live in England. The chippies here are shite. Isle of Skye has the best one I’ve ever had. All in beef oil
Actually. In fairness. I can only speak to Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and London.
@Nvlarr pretty much every English town has v good chippies now. This Dublin one looks like something from the 70s

It was an excellent curry sauce for sure 👌
This is the best food reviewer, quick intro, straight into the food then an honest opinion, too many other reviewers make it feel like being back at school
That’s very kind to say thank you very much
It's your honesty that makes your reviews so good. That's a real shame after making the effort to go there. I sometimes feel a bit sorry for an establishment, the quality could rise and fall with a simple shift change but at least it gives them info & the opportunity to improve. 🙂
Thank you, have to be honest otherwise no point doing them
Have a Guinness on me Gary. Welcome to Ireland and thanks for all the great videos.

Thanks for letting me know Ann, I was surprisingly a fan of the curry sauce and I didn't expect to be lol
I am so sorry to hear this, Luke, in the past had a fantastic reputation hopefully they can sort it out 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
There is no bigger award than Gary's seal of approval, all the other ones mean nothing anymore, Mr Burdock can now really call his scampi award winning.
Ah Chris you are very kind
That list of all the 'celebs' who have supposedly eaten there would put me off more than encourage me in!
I understand completely Fraser
Looks like all the locals in the comment section are not surprised with the poor quality of the fish and chips that you had at that establishment. At least the scampi was good. Great review as always. Make it a great day everyone.
Thank you for watching and commenting
A moldovian family chipper called Romayos became the standard a while back. They have many franchises in Dublin. You'll often get a much better cod and chips in restaurants for some reason. As takeaways go, I also really rate 'Antonio's' of Cabra. Thanks for the great video Gary.
Thank you very much for the recommendations and for your lovely comment
I'd love to see you do a compilation of all the fish and chips shops you've done on the channel and rank them in order. This would be helpful for anyone coming to the UK to plan their food tourism spots properly. Cheers and many blessings!
The North East Coast is where you get the best fish and chips in my opinion. Fish from the North Sea straight off the boats.
A good idea thank you
No Gary, whether they were busy or not, that batter and chips were not cooked properly. Our fish and chip shop in Tring heaves with customers and they cook theirs crispy and golden chips.
Wendover fish and chips are amazing too

I live in Leeds and when my family comes over from Ireland to visit, the first thing they want is fish and chips because they haven't got the hang of it in the chippers at home. You can't beat Yorkshire for fish and chips.

Hi Gary
Yes those fish and chips looked shocking as soon as you opened the paper.
Excellent as always mate and onwards and upwards in Ireland
The scampi definitely saved the day Tony
Standards started to drop during the end of the Celtic Tiger era (mid to late 2000's) Lived in Dublin for 25 years and remember when Burdocks was truly the best.
Gone downhill it seems
the steam in the wrapping paper makes everything go soft i always rip the wrapping this helps to keep it crispy
This is true . My husband explained this to me only a couple of months ago .
I understand Michael but I only left them wrapped for about 10 minutes, unfortunately the batter was not cooked correctly as you could see 👌
Love the crunch of the Scampi aswell as the look of it but that Cod. Absolutely shocking.

As a tourist from the Netherlands I believe I had some nice fish and chips at “The Red Lion Parliament Street” (next to Westminster). I usually don’t fancy peas. But even the mushy peas were very nice! Finished the whole plate!
Nice!
You’d have to cook that batter for another 5 minutes but then the fish would be dry. Batter recipe all wrong. More beer/soda needed
Yes, far too thick
Gazza, a fish and chip shop in Leicester I used to go to sometimes did exactly the same, and the batter always tasted slightly odd as well but I could never figure out what it was, whether it was yeast or something else.
I can't describe it as 'vinegary' because there was no vinegar in sight, but something was off. But I loved the chunky pieces of bread with butter, and the chips were to die for. But fish is the star of the show, and if that is crap then all the supporting actors in the world cannot make it a 10/10 dish.
