I would not recommend shooting an elk size beast over 300 with a 6.5 Creedmoor even if you can hit it perfect every time, i have seen the Creed fail to many times at distance on animals that size, not enough power Well done to the guys here, not an easy cold bore shot even for an experienced target shooter, as we all know our first sighter can be off by a margin and is not always in the 1 moa area
Love this series ! But in all reality an ethical hunter shot @ 500 would be 3 moa , in 15 inches u have shoulder , high shoulder , spine , heart , lungs etc , if your hunting in the mountains or thick areas they can still run a great distance after a heart shot , high shoulder shot locks them up and ends it pretty quick
He actually explained " pretend that it's behind scrub and you only have that shot" so what your saying is completely meaningless. So you can't see anything more of the deer then that 5inch shot. Not really hard to understand
“Long range” is very subjective, growing up in MN I know plenty of people who have never shot even at a target more then 100 yards, just because 200 is a long shot to many of them doesn’t mean it’s long to everyone.
@@jaydunbar7538 I get your point but 1. 100 yards isn't long to anyone =) 300 maybe. 2. this video was 500 yards. People have talked to say there cold bore shot is usually between 2-4 MOA from POA (lets call it 3 MOA for argument sake) An ethical shot on a deer is approx 12" wide making your ethical cold bore shot a MAX distance (absolute max) of 400 yards. So, if you have practiced you KNOW your cold bore is 3 MOA from POA you know your weather you know your load you are a good shot do not get nervous while hunting you can take a 400 yard shot. I think this video kind of proved that too. Half these guys missed the entire deer, some by a few feet. Cold bore is tricky!! I always laugh at movies like the Shooter. They say a guy is going to take a 1.5 mile shot. Cold bore, I give that guy about a 0.01% of connecting. 2640 yards away on a roughly 12" target. So less than half MOA cold more at 1.5 miles HAHAHAHA Absolute comedy!!
@@KevinWood44if your cold bore is that far off then you either need a new rifle or you definitely shouldn’t be hunting with it at any range. There’s one other option guys have and it’s to zero perfectly for cold bore which can be done you just have to be patient because you have to let your barrel cool between every shot. As far as no one thinks 100 is long range ehh maybe not, but also again it’s subjective because you might have alot of guys that hunt timber’s and never take more than a 20 yard shot so they see something at 100 and might say it’s too far. Now 300 might get into the edge of long range, but subjectively for me that is right at the top of standard regular trusted range for me since I run mostly stuff that drops 9” at 300 with a 100 yard zero, however I zero at 50 which is about +1 at 100 so all of those shots can be held dead on at 300 and I trust them to make impact where I set them up to hit.
Because this is an ethical challenge I have to ask Ethically would or should you EVER take a shot if you can only see 1 MOA of your target. Lastly anyone that is traveling to a new destination other then where they normally shot / site in should go out a day or 2 before and double check there site in. " " it is the ethical and right thing to do " "
Iron sights? Someone who competes at a high level in NRA highpower could come really close with a competition AR15 and open sights. From prone with a sling, not a bipod, a good highpower competitor can easily do 1.0 to 1.5 MOA at 600 yards. (I'm not saying I could do it though but it would be fun to try.) All of those shots with a scope were very good, I think any of those guys with proper preparation and practice could have come pretty close with iron sights.
I dabble in long distance target shooting, Im good enough to make a fool of myself, and I am an avid hunter. There is no chance I would attempt a shot on an animal at 500 yards. Ive taken deer at 250 and been lucky but there are just too many variables in a real hunting scenario to justify taking the 500 shot I'm my opinion.
0:52 if you miss a head shot the deer is not “definitely dead”. You don’t take head shots. Especially questionable head shots. I’ve seen several deer running around without noses or top teeth. So sad. Don’t do it.
500 yards is typically considered the Maximum range for experienced hunters. All lot of the shots taken in this challenge would result in a dead deer most likely. Some hunters have a 5moa group or larger in the field. So at 100yards is there shot unethical?
Seating on a rock shooting a strange angle with wobbly shooting stick, or using your sling to stabilize a shot is probably less accurate for me 125 yards than prone on a mat shooting 500.
Not true with a headshot. Not against anything you want to do, That's your choice, but I've seen jaws blown off, and they live and suffer. Same with neck shots, you still can wound them.
It’s still so awkward watching Eric interact with other people. It’s like someone is shoving bamboo under his fingernails every time he talks to someone.
It’s all context. You’ve got a 4-5” lethal area for a head shot. If a knowledgeable and experienced hunter wants to take a deer in the head at 60 yards and not ruin any meat, how is that unethical? Is it less ethical than a bow hunter taking a deer at 50 yards?
Deer target...Hunting ethics...WTF...that should only mean hunting rifles...hunting rifles should also shoot at a realistic 2 MOA target...you miss named your Challenge
This feels more arrogant than educational in all honesty. The vital zone is far larger than a 5" circle on most game. The guy that hit about 2" left would have blown out the middle of both lungs and a shoulder. Incredibly lethal. Ranks right up there with the TexasPlinking rip-off.

I would not recommend shooting an elk size beast over 300 with a 6.5 Creedmoor even if you can hit it perfect every time, i have seen the Creed fail to many times at distance on animals that size, not enough power
Well done to the guys here, not an easy cold bore shot even for an experienced target shooter, as we all know our first sighter can be off by a margin and is not always in the 1 moa area
What bullet was "failing" and how far?
Plenty of power, bullet selection for the range being shot is a must for any cartridge selection.
@@paulcox9366 I feel like your a Kamala Harris type of guy !! 😂😂
@@kurtissmith4555 as a Aussie I'm so bloody glad Trump got up...... political opinion has zero to do with you understanding the challenge. Bye
I would like to know the brand of open sights David is running on his gun? Does anyone know?
What it’s proper etiquette for brass pick up at a PRS match?
That was cool
Taking any ethical shot cold bore at long range is very hard to do.
Indeed.
“Long range” is very subjective, growing up in MN I know plenty of people who have never shot even at a target more then 100 yards, just because 200 is a long shot to many of them doesn’t mean it’s long to everyone.
@@jaydunbar7538 I get your point but
1. 100 yards isn't long to anyone =) 300 maybe.
2. this video was 500 yards.
People have talked to say there cold bore shot is usually between 2-4 MOA from POA (lets call it 3 MOA for argument sake)
An ethical shot on a deer is approx 12" wide making your ethical cold bore shot a MAX distance (absolute max) of 400 yards.
So,
if you have practiced
you KNOW your cold bore is 3 MOA from POA
you know your weather
you know your load
you are a good shot
do not get nervous while hunting
you can take a 400 yard shot.
So less than half MOA cold more at 1.5 miles HAHAHAHA
Absolute comedy!!
Camara scares people
Awesome!
I will bring a heating gun and warm up the barrel before lol
On the way pull off and shoot 2 fouler shots
Because this is an ethical challenge I have to ask Ethically would or should you EVER take a shot if you can only see 1 MOA of your target.
Lastly anyone that is traveling to a new destination other then where they normally shot / site in should go out a day or 2 before and double check there site in. " " it is the ethical and right thing to do " "
So only the heart is an ethical target?
Iron sights? Someone who competes at a high level in NRA highpower could come really close with a competition AR15 and open sights. From prone with a sling, not a bipod, a good highpower competitor can easily do 1.0 to 1.5 MOA at 600 yards. (I'm not saying I could do it though but it would be fun to try.) All of those shots with a scope were very good, I think any of those guys with proper preparation and practice could have come pretty close with iron sights.
400 yards plus with a 6mm Remington. Lack of practice at 400 and not trusting 6mm...I didn't shoot.
❤👍
“I don’t hunt I just shoot pigs from the patio”, just because it’s very relaxed pest control doesn’t mean it’s not hunting lol
LOL, I heard that and thought, that could so easily be taken the wrong way.
LR shooter. Move the sights.
0:52 if you miss a head shot the deer is not “definitely dead”. You don’t take head shots. Especially questionable head shots. I’ve seen several deer running around without noses or top teeth. So sad. Don’t do it.
Ethical👈 hunting challenge @500yds...Oxymoron? Maybe... "A man's got to know his limitations...."
What Range?????
500 yards.
It’s still so awkward watching Eric interact with other people. It’s like someone is shoving bamboo under his fingernails every time he talks to someone.
😅😂 look at that sight setup! Hardly "open sights" not a hunting rig that's for sure.
Put the dope on your sights before the shot.
Still waiting for Eric to restrict this to hunting rifles with hunting ammo.
All the rifles showed were hunting rifles.
yes sir🤣🤣🤣
Head shots are not "ethical" , any more then long range is
It’s all context. You’ve got a 4-5” lethal area for a head shot. If a knowledgeable and experienced hunter wants to take a deer in the head at 60 yards and not ruin any meat, how is that unethical? Is it less ethical than a bow hunter taking a deer at 50 yards?
@JimYeats because animals are not just metal targets and depends
I’ve seen way more ethical long range shots than the common eastern whitetail drives. Far more animals wounded shooting them on the run.
@Josh-uf1rv what great logic , someone is doing something even more unethical somewhere else so that myst mean it's fine
@@sunstruckfarms4489 just because you feel something is unethical doesn’t mean it is for the next guy. A hunters worst enemy is another hunter.
I think the fad is fading, make yourself proud on steel instead of maiming anymore sniper dreams.

Deer target...Hunting ethics...WTF...that should only mean hunting rifles...hunting rifles should also shoot at a realistic 2 MOA target...you miss named your Challenge
MAGA
Shooting at head is dumb shit stuff
This feels more arrogant than educational in all honesty. The vital zone is far larger than a 5" circle on most game. The guy that hit about 2" left would have blown out the middle of both lungs and a shoulder. Incredibly lethal. Ranks right up there with the TexasPlinking rip-off.
It’s just a hypothetical exercise. What’s wrong with the Texas Plinking challenge?
Who pissed in your Cheerios lol. He has explained 100 times he knows the kill zone is bigger. It’s just a fun challenge
Aim small miss small.
I’m the guy that hit 2in left and I was dialed .2 left it happens there’s a few reasons I had it dialed but hey can’t win them all such a cool challenge thanks again Eric
