Shaq wasn't so bad in a Celtics jersey as much as it was wrong to see him in a Celtics jersey. That's how I would put it. Cavs, whatever. Miami Heat, sure. The Lakers' fiercest rivals? That's how you know the plot has officially been lost. Several great players have played for both over their long histories, but nowhere was it more *wrong* than here.
As a Celtics fan I was like "Why are we doing this?" and little to do with the rivalry as much as it was with how washed he looked. It was hard to watch.
@gerimayawhyte154 Exactly. Odd take: Why do I think that it would have benefited every party involved for Shaq to sign for the Magic instead? He brings his career full-circle, he gets to play for a contender, and both Dwight and Shaq get to attempt to quash their beef that would last for the majority of the Diesel's post-playing career.
@@nicholastricarico2957 Yeah, that could have been nice but Shaq has too much pride for that. For as much as Shaq likes to dish out criticism he seems pretty ticky tack about how much he takes and from who as in evidence with his beef with Bill Walton.
@@urbaindelva7869lmao right, the celtics just built a championship level team consistently since he was a rookie, and they’d expect He’d go a dumpster fire that is the lakers organization
The move Shaq did after the alley oop is called “high stepping” and it used to be popular amongst football players in the early 2000s, Deion Sanders made it popular by doing it while defenders were still trying to tackle him lol, but his (Shaq) was a unique version of it, I can’t remember who it was, but their was an elite pass rusher that used to do it slowly after sacks similar to how Shaq did . It just looks weird because Shaq was so big and out of shape when he did it 😂 usually there’s more emphasis on bringing your knees up and taking higher steps as you walk off. But you can tell that’s what he was going for by the way he was trying to swing his arms in sync with his steps.
So, back when I was in high school, I got to see Shaq in Boston against the Nets and I still have the video posted on my RUclips channel where he hit two clutch free throws in the 4th quarter, which blew my mind in the moment because you know... Shaq shoots with Steph Curry's precision from the free throw line... 🤣 BUT it was a memory for me and on top of that, he was surprisingly the leading scorer from that game with 25 points and even added 11 rebounds for a double-double like y'all mentioned in the video! And yeah... He scored more than KG, Pierce and Ray Ray that night... Now he was definitely washed at this point in his career BUT I got to see him play really well in person one last time before he officially retired. So in my mind, his Celtics' tenure wasn't a waste just cause I got an amazing memory from it! 😂😄 ALSO! I always thought Shaq chose number 36 because his birthday is 3/6 but apparently he chose 36 for some other reason that I don’t recall. BTW! It wasn't so much that Shaq was terrible (Putting up decent role player numbers at 38 is a win), just that it was kinda embarrassing that the Cavs and Celtics would try to hype the signing as though he was still MVP Shaq.
I love superstars that are past their prime and joining a team that straight up makes you wince at how wrong they look wearing that jersey. Hornets Tony Parker Warriors/Spurs CP3 Cavs Dwade Cavs Drose And Melo literally every team after his time with the Knicks
At this point in his career he was more occupying space and playing some meaningful minutes but his dominant days were far behind him. But you still had to deal with him.
if you watched the Celtics with Shaq that year, he was actually really good in his role and a massive upgrade over Kendrick Perkins (which says a lot since Perk was 12 years younger) but he sustained an achilles injury that ended any effective, winning basketball he had left
He actually played well for them and when he was on the court + fully healthy they were the team to beat in the east. The problem was that ainge traded away perkins and therefore the team was gonna be relying heavily on shaq for the remainder of that year which simply wasn't practical given his age. Once he suffered the Achilles injury it was over for both him and that particular celtics team for that season.
Celtics fan since 07 Celtics didn’t bet on shaq Perkins was going to be a free agent and they offered him an extension but it wasn’t enough because of salary restraints with the big 4
I'm a Celtics fan and I was watching my championship team disintegrate in front of my very eyes. Watching Shaq who was more like Shanty Shaq at that point was kinda hard to watch. I hated it ever time he hit the court.
its kinda wild to think he ended up playing 19 seasons in the end. i wonder how long he could have been an all-star caliber player if he gave a shit about conditioning
I gotta say I agree with most of the video but Shaq was terrible on Inside the NBA for years before he finally settled in. He was not the missing piece at all, the show was already of the best shows in sports TV history with just Ernie, Kenny, and Chuck. The show went from great to fine with Shaq then back to great again, but it took a few years
Damn so if the Celtics didn’t bet on shaq, Perkins would’ve stayed a Celtic and not been traded to okc. Without Perkins contract on their payroll they would’ve been able to sign James harden to the max he wanted. Shaq killed a dynasty by signing a minimum
Was shaq at his time from the celtics bad ? No debate . Yes . He was overweight and almost amassed 400 Pounds . Injury Prone and his legs are so bent up like he was wobbling from the court trying his best to stay on the floor alive . Shaq would've made more productive years if he was healthy , he could've taken kobe's advice .
@hitek9too255 shaq was "washed up" yet averaged 17p 9r which was the same as Pau Gasol who was "top 5 big man in the league".... Shawn Marion was trash in the playoffs dude was overrated
By the second year in phoenix he was done…wish he stayed in Miami in a UD/Alonzo role, but he was too big of a celebrity and had too much ego to do that.
Yes he was. Although he may have had a few good individual games, he only played in 37 games, 20 mins/game, averaged 4.8 rebounds/game and averaged 9.2 points/game. Pretty pathetic numbers. He should have retired before Phoenix traded him to the Cavs.
Shaq was basically ring chasing at that point because he just witnessed Kobe win his 5th ring, which is more than Shaq's 4 rings.
Shaq paved the road for David west in the future of ring chasing
Shaq was the best player on 3 championship teams and Kobe only 2 that’s game

Washed Shaq meme is entering its Washed Shaq era 😭
Shaq actually wasn’t bad in Boston lol. He was a decent center even at 40. It was just nasty to see him in a green jersey after being a Laker god.
Shaq should’ve humbled himself and went back to Miami during the big 3 days. The 5 position was a major issue.
It wasn't so much that Shaq was terrible (Putting up decent role player numbers at 38 is a win), just that it was kinda embarrassing that the Cavs and Celtics would try to hype the signing as though he was still MVP Shaq.

That he was just 1 year removed from making an All-NBA team is definitely the most uncanny bit about celtics shaq
He actually played well for them and when he was on the court + fully healthy they were the team to beat in the east.
