Well after seeing the exact same team crushed by unevolved pokemon multiple times, it was kinda expected. Without copying the movesets this run would have been a cakewalk.
When you have to spread EXP to five Pokemon who aren't great even when fully evolved instead of pooling all of your resources into a single ally, it kind of makes sense management would be more involved and progress possibly slower.

And even if they really wanted a Rock type on his team, why not the vastly superior Golem that would be much more fitting for an Elite 4 member? I can see them wanting to keep Rhydon exclusive to Giovanni and Blue but it's not like anyone else in the game was using Golem (in fact no trainers in the Gen 1 games have a Golem at all).
In the game where every other big trainer had a type, I remember never being able to figure out what he was as a kid. His dialogue didn't clarify, Brock was shirtless and had Onix, was he rock too?

@@KiranasOfRizon And that's the EASY part against the E4! For an itemless run, the big no-no is Bruno, he's FOR ONE pretty tough... jk, he's a joke again. Nah, the problem is your PP won't be large enough for Agatha (no dirty-pun intended): none of her Pokémon can be poisoned, Golbat and Arbok resist Poison Sting, and her 3 ghosts DOUBLE resist it, and cannot be hit by Struggle when it eventually runs out. Even if she barely attacks, just to deal enough damage you need a ridiculous amount of crits even at level 100 with maxed-out PPs, attack DVs and Stat Exp/EVs. Keep in mind: Weedle's low base speed mean crits won't be very frequent, a successful Dream Eater gives HP back to Haunter or Gengar, Agatha has at least 5 Super Potions and has a 32/256 chance of using one for every turn her Pokémon is below 20% of their max HP, you don't have a move to exploit the badge glitch (I think her Golbat and/or Arbok have Screech, but use it randomly due to being a "Bad AI", so you could get lucky, but if Golbat uses Haze your Stats go back to normal), and she usually leaves her Haunter and the 2nd Gengar for last, which means that when you're forced to use Struggle, her only Pokémon remaining will be the ones that are immune to it. She's the run killer, even when she doesn't attack much. Lorelei requires the 3 crits in a row against Dewgong, which is very infrequent, but you get plenty of tries since she won't attack back and is the first Pokémon of the first E4 member. She is not THAT high of a threat after that. So Loreiei is a matter of time. A lot of time, though. If you don't save between E4 members, it will take a lot of time just to have another go at Agatha. Then again, since Jrose's reasoning for doing all of it with no saves in between is to prove his Strategy is good enough to win each battle consistently. I don't see much point on applying it on a Weedle run, which gives practically no room for strategy due to the fact Weedle doesn't learn any moves. At all. But even then, Agatha's lottery might make it impossible.

That error exists in gen 2 as well. Bruno uses a Hitmonlee with High Jump Kick, that pretty much always misses, but only takes 1 hp of damage each time, in Crystal.

I think people who claim Gen 1 is remotely hard just haven't played the games since they were little kids and just remember the levels being high, thinking "higher levels = more difficulty".

Jrose can you do a Beedrill run just so we can talk about how OP twinneedles is
Amen to that! Twineedle does not get enough attention. BLAST AWAY THOSE OP PSYCHIC TYPES! :D
@@hatsoffXO4 I just finished soloing blue with beedrill and although I had to get it to level 87 before I could take everyone out it was so easy to level up! The fact that it gets that move just makes it godly.
Beedrill solo is actually really fun in HG/SS (It was my first solo run), 'cause it's movepool in those games is legit decent. It gets Bug Bite before Falkner (Since Weedle gets it at level 16), Twineedle is always nice, Pursuit is actually really nice for ousting the Ghosts which would otherwise resist both of its STABs (Since Gastly is everywhere), has other good STAB for late game with Poison Jab, good set up in Swords Dance and it has recovery in Roost. Probably one of the most fun times I've ever had playing a Pokemon game tbh.
@@airtempest8945 Agreed! When I played blue for the first time when I was a kid I was trying to feel out other pokemon to use and stumbled upon beedrill and I think it was the first time my jaw genuinely hit the floor when I was 8 years old xD I genuinely don't think there was or has been one since that is as good of a bug pokemon as it and the fact that it's so OP may actually be the reason why.
its nice to some Beedrill love, for some reason if i can have one i do, i love its Mega too, its scary glass cannon and in lets go its even better, no abilities just pure stats.

You know jrose is struggling on a challenge when he hasn't posted a best pokemon challenge in awhile.
its been 4 days... maybe y'know, just maybe, he wanted to mix it up a bit and do something else to split it up? He never said he was going to do all 53 parts back-to-back.

@@ThatOneBadMuslim Bongzilla is the one true pokemon! All other's are no better than magikarps in his eyes! Praise be to Bongzilla! Fear the might of Bongzilla! Worship the Bongzilla!
@@ThatOneBadMuslim Weedle challenge will be impossible, most likely. Against Lorelei, he needs 3 consecutive critical hits with poison sting with maxed DVs and maxed stat XP. Else it just spams rest and recovers any ordinary damage, plus any poison status. Also, it's not even guaranteed to kill with three consecutive critical hits, due to damage spread.

@@eddiecowen2624 ~*it just works*~
When he says glitchless he means no overworld glitches.
In battle glitches are fine.
@@petelee2477 I thought that also meant no glitches in battle, with the badge boost glitch being the exception since it can't be avoided unless you never use a stat move again and also prevent the opponent from using these moves on you.

As Hitmonchan is one of my favorites, I must say I'm very proud of him in this run.
I believe in Gen 1's bad coding Hi Jump Kick and similar moves when you miss and crash, it will always only deal one damage.
@Gavin James Okay? I never claimed I could code better and I'm not hating on the game. I love Gen 1 but you have to admit the coding on it is terrible at times. JRose and other RUclipsrs who do Gen 1 runs have commented on how bad it's coded. I'm putting forward information for those who watch the video especially JRose so they can use it for strategy.
@@shu8440 I double-checked with Bulbapedia and a couple other sources and as far I can tell it's correct.
It was like that until gen 3
That error exists in gen 2 as well. Bruno uses a Hitmonlee with High Jump Kick, that pretty much always misses, but only takes 1 hp of damage each time, in Crystal.
Gavin James “You said something disagreeing with a company and how they did a thing! You’re a stupid troll!” Begone.

You got a snort outta me. Have my like.
I don’t get it when people say gen one is the hardest game. The opponents’ teams are terrible and the AI is garbage,
And then you got the Stat EXP system and the Badge boosts making your pokemon so much stronger than the opponent's, to where by the end you can be over 10 levels lower and still have better stats than the Elite 4's pokemon (nevermind the Badge boost glitch and all the imbalances you can exploit). I think people who claim Gen 1 is remotely hard just haven't played the games since they were little kids and just remember the levels being high, thinking "higher levels = more difficulty".
@@OmegaTyrant I still remember beating Red for the first time and I still won the champion rival battle despite forgetting to heal beforehand, lol. All of my Pokemon were at Lv. 47, too.
R/S/E through B/W were probably the games that came closest to actually being Hard. Pokemon's never really been that difficult, and I don't suppose it was ever meant to be, but things certainly have been getting simpler recently.
They probably say that, because Pokémon newer actually got harder after the first Gen.
They either stayed equal or became easier.
I guess clunkyness is a difficulty to them. Good thing GSC is superior to RBY in every way.

I thought this was gonna be boring, but it turned out to be rather compelling. It's hard to tell ahead of time which constraints will make for a dramatic narrative, but it made for a great video. Thanks again!
I like how Bruno is so bad even Bruno can beat him with relative ease
I know you're not really interested in gen 7 runs, but Elite 4 Hala has one of the worst sets: 1 pokemon with 3 move slots, 3 pokemon with 2 move slots.
If you ever did a gen 7 challenge set team, I think this would be a difficult and interesting one to do.
See, a Protect/Last Resort combo would be great as a 2 slot setup

Honestly i mean why he have two Onix?
By Agatha/Lance it is "excuseable" trough the fact there are almost no Ghost/Dragon types. But there are still plenty of Fighting types!
There are two - Primeape and Poliwrath. I think, maybe developers thought "huh, this guy really would have 4 mono fighting Pokemon, that's not good". Maybe there is some reason about his backstory, idk.
