10 BEST Broadway Musical Soundtracks!

- Hi friends! Welcome to this opinion/listicle/favorites vid: Top 10 BEST Broadway Musical Soundtracks!
I always get this question from you guys--especially from those who are newer to the musical theatre fandom and are looking for show suggestions. This is a great place to start!
Question of the day: What are your favorite musical theatre soundtracks? Comment them below!
Like I mention in the video, not all of these are necessarily "broadway" musical soundtracks. In actuality, some of these are off-broadway shows or studio cast recordings. Also, like I mention in the video, these are just the current 10 (okay, 14) soundtracks that I listen to the most. They're not necessarily my absolute favorite shows (even though I love them all), they're just albums that I want to share with you guys!
For example, if I had to choose one all time favorite musical--it would probably be Les Miserables....which I don't mention on this list. I love the show, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I listen to the cast album every day. If I did that, I would be crying 24/7.
Also, like I mention in the vid--I didn't try to get fancy or obscure with the shows listed. I just answered truthfully with the shows I've been listening to the most recently. Never let anyone make you feel bad for loving the things you do.
This is definitely not in order (sorry!). But here are the shows mentioned in the vid ♥️
Bare
Light in the Piazza
Hair (2009)
Last 5 Years
Parade
Carrie (2012)
Heathers: The Musical
Bridges of Madison County
Spring Awakening
Next to Normal
Company (2006)
Ragtime
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Bright Star

I've been getting a bunch of questions on why I call these "soundtracks"-- not all of the shows mentioned here are the original broadway cast recordings and I wanted to use a label that covered all of them. "Recordings" sounds like bootleg/pro shot so I didn't want to be more confusing. Hope this clarifies! 💘
Katherine Steele They’re still cast recordings, even if they’re not on Broadway. Cast Albums would also be acceptable. But no matter which way you look at it, they’re not soundtracks. Soundtracks are for films.
You may never see this, but could you do a top ten flop show recordings? The shows that for one reason or another failed, but have glorious or fun scores. I love Prettybell, Her First Roman, The Grass Harp, House of Flowers, Minnie’s Boys, It’s a Bird... it’s a Plane... It’s Superman, Calamity Jane, Mata Hari, Snoopy the Musical , Dead World
RLucas3000 Based on the content covered on this channel, I’d wager a guess that she’s never heard of most of the wonderful flops you’ve mentioned.
You're such a thoughtful, intelligent musical theater person, I think that's why people are calling it out. For those of us you care about the proper terms and difference between the two terms, it's not a question of what sounds accurate. A soundtrack is recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a motion picture, book, television program, or video game. A soundtrack is the collection of songs played IN a movie, for example. It's a fairly minor difference, but it's worth keep the accurate terms alive rather than perpetuating the wrong one. But for what it's worth, I love your list and I'm so glad to see you promoting scores that aren't necessarily part of the online MT culture, like Ragtime, Parade, and Piazza ... 3 of the best scores of the last 50 years. And Company of course!
You must listen to and watch 13 the musical!
It was the last show that I was in.

@@smpzpzpz I've listened to the soundtrack at age 13 and two-three monts later saw the movie, and later found bootleg. They are both very different and tho I love the musical, I do not see it as "Heathers" In the meaning the movie has given.
The original story is definitly more disturbing, but for me really better. But if you think you are too young for the musical, and think it is dark, I will not recomend you to watch the movie any time soon.

Kat: I listen to it NON STOP
me: hehe I wonder what that's going to be. Hamilton? *Cough, Cough* 😏
Kat: I feel like it's very underappreciated and no one really listens to it

I actually really love the soundtrack for Shrek the Musical
that is my absolute least favorite musical theatre score ever... knowing jeanine tesori’s other work i am blown away that she would write something of that caliber
same. it was my first ever musical so it has a special place in my heart
Yes
You know, there are times when I watch your videos and go "I really like her, I think we'd get along," and then you mention Parade and I think "we're best friends"

They aren’t in any order, but the first two are the ones that I recommend you listen to if you haven’t already, they’re really good, and quite underrated:
-Fly By Night (seriously, go listen to the cast recording it’s AMAZING)
-A New Brain: 2015 cast recording (if you’re a fan of a lot of singing, then listen to this one. There’s barely any dialogue because it’s all sung)
-Spongebob
-Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
-The Book of Mormon
-Heathers
-Dear Evan Hansen (first musical I listened to, a lot of the extra songs [Hiding In Your Hands, Oblivious etc] are REALLy good)

Henri Tomic Is it hard to find?? I’d love to see it?
ryanwa5h3re depends on what you mean , I heard there is an incredible good bootleg but never have seen it, don’t think there is an official recording, I’ve been in the European production, so I only know it because of that, just google it I guess
theres a recording from both la jolla and papermill, theres also an official recording with michael arden and ciara renee!
ruclips.net/video/A1cG5_zrOFM/видео.html of cause nothing compared to the live experience (really- not even close. When you see this show live you are so stunned you can't even talk afterwards) but still better than nothing ;-)
Ryan If you live anywhere near Seattle it’s still at the 5th Avenue Theatre for a few more weeks, I saw it last Sunday there and it’s absolutely fantastic I was crying by the end, it really is beautiful representation of the story
THE LIGHTNING THIEF THE MUSICAL IS AMAZING. It captures the book SO well. It really is just the book being sung and just singing along with you're favorite characters and I LOVE IT!

Hey there! My husband and I love you and this channel. We discovered it accidentally when we were searching hot takes about a play currently playing in Chicago called Six. We also found that play accidentally and loved it. We think it may go to broadway but it definitely needs more songs and a book for that matter but it does well with just playing like it’s a rock concert. We know you’d love it. Keep up the good work and we will be sure to watch more vids. Oh yea. Completely agree with this list. We also loved the soundtrack to Legally Blond. Very poppy and fun.
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR INCLUDING HAIR! No one ever talks about it and I love it so much!!!!
hahaha I haven't heard enough musicals to have 10 favourites (but just you wait...)
1. Hamilton- can't beat it. Won't even try.
2. Legally Blonde- heard it recently. Such a guilty pleasure, and also never fals to uplift and inspire me.
3. Waitress- so much fun, takes you along for the ride. I swear, the music sounds like the sweet texture of a cake to me.
4. 21 Chump Street- I can't even explain this one. But, again, a lot of fun.

I'm so glad you put Ragtime in this list! I love Ragtime so much and it has a special place in my heart. I was in a show of it recently and g o d I'm so glad I've found other people who enjoy the beauty of this musical so much! Also, I really really hope they revive this show somuch. And tbh, Josh Groban would be an amazing Tateh.

I just came across your channel I can’t bruise never saw any of your videos but my favorite musical theater soundtrack is a little princess and my favorite song is soldier on. I really recommend you listening to the whole thing.
I might get to see Company this year (not a big production but still) and I’m really excited! Not many shows come to where I live other than really really popular ones like the Sound of Music or Grease.
This is the video I always needed. My favorites are Next to Normal, Sweeney Todd (2005), and The Last Five Years.

I looooooove Aida !! such a good soundtrack
I can't choose 1 so have 5! Be more chill, dear evan hansen, rent, something rotten and falsettos
Becca BMC AND DEH!
I'm an older guy (and a performer) and all my favorites are your classic 'golden-age' shows. I must confess I'm only vaguely familiar with virtually every show you've mentioned and haven't even heard of 'Bare'. (Man, I'm old!) That said, I've often contemplated my 10-disc 'desert island' picks of B'way musical CD's, and while they're mostly Rodgers/Hammerstein or Lerner/Loewe, at the top of the heap must be John McGlinn's 3 disc restoration of 'Show Boat' (should probably count as classical/opera). Katherine, you are probably familiar with this, but if you haven't heard it, you must! I intend to educate myself by listening to the shows you've mentioned. Thanks for your channel!
If you cannot tell, I am going on musical theatre binge..when you said Ragtime I almost started crying I love that show so freaking much! I could just listen to the symphonic suite and I just melt (musically)...it's so good!!!
I think this is my list for now...
Les Miserables (Always)
Heathers
SpongeBob (Not embarrassed in the least)
Neverland
Sunday in the Park
Hamilton
Ragtime
Assassins
Falsettos
Cinderella (2012-such a gem)
Don’t be in embarrassment. SpongeBob is AWESOME!!!!!! Btw I did get an autograph from Ethan Slater and Lilli Cooper.
FALSETTOS YES
Les mis, wicked, heathers, the little mermaid
Orange Bar YES
It’s a concept recording, but could not stop listening to Starry. Music is insane! I’m with you on Next to Normal, Spring Awakening, Last Five Years. Also, Hadestown & Grease Live (because Aaron Tveit and Jordan Fisher).
Thank you for putting Carrie on this list!! Such an underappreciated musical
1. Heathers
2. Dear Evan Hansen
3. Hamilton
4. Hairspray
5. Newsies
6. Waitress
7. Wicked
8. Hair
9. School of Rock
10. Spring Awakening
11. Amélie
Falsettos revival, be more chill, and waitress
Aww, you like Bright Star, too! I discovered it by seeing Steve Martin on Jimmy Fallon. I love Steve Martin so I wanted to listen to the music and I think it's great and also a little underrated. Haha
I've been absolutely obsessed with the original off-Broadway cast recordings of "March of the Falsettos" and "Falsettoland" for the past (over a) year now. I have the cast recording CD for the Falsettos 2016 revival and I like it and listen to it a lot but the off-Broadway cast recordings are so incredibly special to me in particular
YES THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA!!!!! YES CLARA JOHNSON!!!!! YES ULTIMATE DREAM ROLE!!!!! THIS 👏🏻 IS 👏🏻 WHY 👏🏻 I 👏🏻 LOVE 👏🏻 YOU 👏🏻 AND 👏🏻 THIS 👏🏻 CHANNEL 👏🏻
I'm in my schools musical, guess what it is!

(Sue Me from guys and Dolls, Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler, and Sixteen going on Seventeen from Sound of Music are also some of my favorites, ...if you’re curious)
Some of my favorite cast recordings, in no particular order:
1. Fiddler on the Roof. No musical will ever be so perfect. The movie soundtrack has the entire wedding dance. It's beautiful.
2. West Side Story. I can't get over Leonard Bernstein's music. It's perfect.
3. Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 (both versions). The off-B'way CR is amazing, the B'way CR is amazing; I love them both so much. Dave Malloy owns my soul.
4. Be More Chill. The amount of talent that went into this cast recording is simply insane. And the score is fantastic; I love weird computer noises and theremins.
5. Little Shop of Horrors. Everything about this musical is the epitome of weird perfection.
6. Parade and Ragtime. I need revivals of these. NOW.
7. Godspell (2011 revival). How did they get so many amazing actors on this? Lindsay Mendez... George Salazar... Uzo Aduba... YES.
Hunter Parrish as Jesus = 😍😍
OMG YASSSSS I TOTALLY AGREE!
Im constantly listening to the in the heights soundtrack.
