When Disney acquired Fox Studios in 2018, Marvel fans jumped to the conclusion that MCU X-Men would be right around the corner. So why is it, in Marvel's announced projects through 2026, no X-Men title is on the calendar, while so many other less popular Marvel characters are getting the film adaptation green light? Yes, it takes time to plant the seeds for mutants, but why have so few seeds been planted, compared to other times when Marvel Studios clearly prioritized and fast tracked a storyline within a two year period? In this Invosstigation episode, Erik Voss explores the rumors and contractual history of the X-Men franchise and what Marvel Studios is actually capable of doing.
Welcome to The Deep Dive, a new channel in the New Rockstars Digital Network. Hosted by Erik Voss, The Deep Dive is the destination for more pointed media investigations. From full seasons of Marvel streaming shows to cult classic films, Erik will dig to the roots of the hidden agendas beneath every title.

For real.
Doom and Magneto should have been the next big bads after Thanos. Should have set them up immediately after Endgame.
@@DeepDiveNR especially Dr. Doom. I LOVE Jonathan Majors as Kang, but he should have been A BAD, or a bad guy within a couple IPs, but Doom should be THE BIG BAD. THE next Thanos
I don't think they'll use Magneto as a bad. Most likely an anti hero.
@@erikstrothers2679 Yeah but I think that works best if you first set him up as a villain.
@@Jim-Mc I think that'll be told past tense. I have a feeling when the MCU x-men come out, magneto and xavier will take more of a backseat. I mean, if you look at the current comics, they've made magneto a significantly more heroic character than xavier.
@@nogrecordsIt would be even more awesome to set-up Kang as the main villain only for Doom to absolutely destroy him, Doom deserves a movie of his own that’s something Marvel really need to do, invest more time into the development of these characters rather than simply showing up and being killed off in the same movie.
I'm really learning a lot from the Invosstigations. I'm not obsessed with filmmaking or the industry, but the insight you provide helps me understand the business level of things.
Also, would you consider a collaboration with Screen Crush? You and Ryan seem to really have a shared love of diving deeply.
😉
Ryan rips off half his material from Erik. It wouldn't be a collaboration. Just look at the videos SC puts out the day after NR or DD puts out videos. Same content, same theories, same easter eggs, etc. And when SC *does* get their videos out first, they miss many many things.
Excellent breakdown, I completely agree that it’s probably more likely a producer issue.
Side note - I took a seminar class with Michael Uslan (pronounced You-slen) at my university and his story is so inspiring and awesome. Highly recommend his memoir The Boy Who Loved Batman for those curious.
I think the Tom Holland Spider-man reboot was greenlit regardless of how recent there had been another Spider-Man because they found Tom Holland. They may be trying to wait for similarly perfect X-men casting for key characters, or they know who they want and they've been under another studio's thumb.
I kinda felt it's more of a strategy of not wanting to burn too bright too fast.
The last couple years showed that Marvel can only make so many movies/projects a year. The X-Men movies were constantly bogged down by the need and demand to include more and more characters. There just isn't room for that bloat, and then burning through all your best characters before and leaving nothing for the future.
Let people get to know this current roster of Marvel Heroes and slip in a mutant or two. The Next wave making more X-Men and being selective is the key.
The excitement of stuff like the Ultimate Universe was fueled by fans wanting to see new takes on their favs. That once they were all out in the open, the excitement died down. They need to hold back to survive as a long term studio.
I completely agree Giancarlo Esposito would be a terrifying casting as a SUPERVILLIAN considering his performance in Breaking bad as Gus.
He would be an excellent Charles Xavier - for much the same reason 😈
Based on breaking bad alone I would have agreed. However, in everything I’ve seen him in since he’s been pretty awful. I think he was just great for that one specific role but doesn’t have the range to pull off the complexities of Xavier.
@@cacoethes1366 I'm not sure I agree. I think Esposito has a good opportunity to pull off something completely different and could do it. Christopher Lee was another famous "villainous" actor who was able to play sympathetic characters as well. Don't just write off Esposito like that.
@@thenamesbrownie AGREEEEEEEEEEEED, hes so charming in real life, but he can flip that switch and thats exactly how prof. x is
The producer credit thing is really sad, especially when writers aren't getting paid what they deserve.
THIS
I clicked so freakin fast bro!!!
Love The Deep Dive!!
Yesterday I rewatched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and i think it deserves a deep dive video because there's a lot to tell :D
As much as I like Wolverine, you DON'T NEED HIM to start of the X-Men!! I've been saying it since they announced Mutants coming to the MCU from the beginning: if youre going to establish the X-Men in the MCU, START WITH THE OG 5: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast and Iceman! We have yet to have ANY type of adaptation with just those five so why not now; Then, you can start bringing in those characters we love like Storm and Nightcrawler and yes Wolverine!
Absolutely would love to see the original team, especially in their original costumes and designs (I would love to have Jean Greay be known as Marvel Girl too, though it might be a bit too confusing having too many “Marvel” named characters).
It would be great if it was set in the 60’s too though not sure how it could be explained why there’s been no major reference to mutants if they’ve been around the entire time, so I would be fine just setting it after the events of Secret Invasion which would help create the narrative of the general public becoming untrustworthy/ fearful of new groups of people with various powers/abilities, especially those with a unnatural appearance.
Yes!!! You guys get it. Too many folks hit with their nostalgia bug of leading-man-hugh-jackman wolverine. But not the OG, OG xmen. To establish the core values and tone of the Xmen properly you really do need to start with the first 5.
So excited for this video erik
Don't forget The Princess Bar in TFATWS. Direct reference to Patch.
Or the name Braddock getting mentioned in Endgame even though you only tell it was said through the subtitles.
It's interesting that WGA writers are striking, in part, because the studios view them as creative replaceables (by AI, scabs, etc etc) but producorial assignment to IP -- outside of actual rights procurement, as with the Uslans, Peters, etc -- leads to near-permanent entanglement, like it's obvious and integral. F'n Hollywood, lol.
Invosstigations are the best part of the new channel!
I remember meeting Bryan Singer at a pool party around the time X-men came out. Never would have thought that about him. Great video as usual Erik!!
I was watching the Hollywood Reporter round table yesterday and Evan peters was there and dude looks traumatised still, like after AHS cult, but much worse, after the dahmer thing and I though god it would have been so great to see him again back as Quicksilver, he was absolutely brilliant as that, a complete highlight of those movies and so underused (dark phoenix). He’d be excellent for the MCU in it I think. I think anyhew 🤷🏻♀️
@@DeepDiveNR hard agree. And how thru sidelined their kind of golden goose (he made such an impact and I know a lot had to do with the amazing work done by crew on his scenes bur he was absolutely wonderful to watch. He’s so good at that but, excuse my language but that movie was honestly such a clusterfuck… I wonder do you think since he was the first to cross over - in a very unpopular way in the end but massively popular in the beginning - do you think they might be smart enough to bring him back. I think him and Deadpool would be a great combo…
@@deeobrien5417I honestly think at this stage it’s best just to recast everyone, that’s clearly what’s going to happen in Deadpool 3 (essentially an adaptation of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe) with only Deadpool himself being the soul survivor of the FoXmen.
@@DeepDiveNR Peters was busy filming American Horror Story.
This is my favorite new YT channel by far! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hi New Rockstars and The Deep Dive am a big fan of your amazing work. Can I ask if you could do a breakdown for Severance?
Just take the time to get it right! Plus give me Jeremy Allen White from The Bear as a comic accurate Wolverine & Jacob Elordi from Euphoria as Cyclops!
Yeah it's weird to me that Erik and NR were the ones saying they wanted the X-Men to be slow rolled into the MCU so they could get all the characters and stories right and now they're saying Marvel is dragging their feet lol. And I also agree, Jeremy Allen White would make a pretty cool Wolverine!
@@keithwoodcrest they need to make more speculation content since the WGA writers strike has put everything on hold
@@DeepDiveNR But doesn't it make sense to first deal with the issues they've had with Phase 4 & 5 so far (Writing, VFX & Jonathan Majors/Kang) and get all of it right first before diving headfirst into the X-Men at the same time thereby stretching themselves even thinner than they already are and producing inferior X-Men output?!
It doesn’t take 5+ years to “get it right “
Always great getting your insight Eric. It’s crazy, given the fact that these are publicly traded companies that we can’t get more solid evidence of why the X-Men hasn’t been relaunched with new actors. I think you’re right that it’s more about the producers than the actors.
Good points. Thanks for bringing them up.
Wow. At least if youtube fails, Voss has a backup career as a PI. That was one hell of a video!
Great Video, So excited to see the X-Men in the MCU
I'm not worried about this. I like the slow introduction of the Mutants in the MCU.
So far in the MCU, we have Kamala Khan, Namor and Wolverine. Keep the slow build going.
I'm pretty sure when we do get the Mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it'll be glorious.
Where is wolverine in the MCU? You can’t mean the obscure headline that’s seen for half a second in she hulk that hints at a guy with claws?
@@cacoethes1366
He's out there. Just hasn't been casted yet (Hugh Jackman is playing a Variant version in Deadpool 3).
@@thealjohnsonshow2188 what does "he's out there" mean? If you're counting deadpool then nearly ALL the heroes in it are mutants so why are you singling out wolverine?
@@cacoethes1366
I'm not
Wolverine?
Wasn't expecting a Singer Zinger to end the video, but was happy to see it.
I don’t remember seeing Geologie product placement in ‘A League of Their Own’ I’ll have to re-watch it
I Hope they do what they did with avengers and kinda do solo movies of some characters and then do an XMen movie
Thanks so much for all your work. Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤
I'm pretty sure Rogue's introduction will include Carol Danvers. And maybe that's how they will end Captain Marvel in the MCU. Then maybe, they will start it with an Avengers vs X-Men. And also they made another T'Challa by introducing us with King T'Challa's son, So he can become Storm's Husband. Hopefully soon! X-Men is my favorite family of superheroes.
I mean .. Deadpool & Logan . That's probably the start of their Mcu arrival.. like everyone. Instead of bits
I'm surprised you didn't mention that some mutant characters showed up in She-Hulk. So obviously they can use mutants, they just can't specifically say they are mutants. Especially when they're lesser known characters
Speaking of hulks and mutants, I wonder if they will do an MCU version of Hulk Vs Wolverine in Deadpool 3 as Wolverine's intro Earth-199999 now called internally as Earth-616.
That would be something!
because nobody remembers this show lol
@@FireJach I do. It was great fun.
@@FireJach but people remember to hate on it? Doesn’t make sense
yeah they can use mutants now cuz they own the rights to them, back then they didnt
Id honestly love to see them leave Wolverine alone for a bit and introduce Daken. That, and bring back the ridiculously talented actor who's name escapes me that played Laura Kinney/X-23. Let's see more of her story now that she's older. I would dig the hell out of that.
Her name is Dafne Keen.
love the content
3:37 YOU DIDNT NEED TO SAY THAT ERIK!!!😂😭
Another good Invosstigation.
Please don't ever leave us, I watch for u and howu react to things
The problem is that the MCU becomes more unwieldy as it expands, meaning we either needs a ton of content all the time or it'll take a while to get to things we want. The X-Men (and the Mutant side of the Marvel worlds) is such a gigantic facet that adding it into another world is difficult without it overwhelming or underdelivering while raising questions like do you start with the original era or Giant Size X-Men or something else, when do you bring in other things like X-Force or X-Factor, and how much interplay should/must there be with the rest of the MCU? It's tougher than just bringing in Spidey, it's almost an entire universe unto itself (which is why it was able to work reasonably well on its own under Fox, the main issues being creative).
Arguably your most interesting Deep Dive E.V. Love your work and keep doing what you do.
That producer contract info, is just the sort of thing I would never have even thought to consider. That’s a good knowledge drop
And that truth hammer at the end, damn you know your shit!
I've wondered for a long time what producers do. I guess part of the job is collecting paychecks for not doing anything. 😕
Great video ! These producers are getting paid!
Hey Eric! Love the content and was wondering if you could do a breakdown of Memento, I watched it for the first time yesterday and thought it could make a very interesting Deep Dive
I would have been so stoked if they would have cameoed in the End Game final battle.
I LOVE THIS CHANNELL
marvel probably is going to introduce the x-men after secret wars, maybe do a whole saga around them and the fantastic four, giving some space for a soft reboot of the avengers later
I think the reason is that the X-men are too big to appear not as a main character. If they appear in this saga they will not be as big as if they had a saga about them. So I simply think marvel might do a soft reboot the MCU after the multiverse saga then have the X-men, F4, Avengers and spider-man be their main focus like the Avengers in the infinity saga and Kang(before the legal drama)
I think the Avengers: Secret Wars movie will basically conclude the MCU as we know it and we'll follow a different Earth from that point on.
I agree, there has to be a reboot after Secret Wars to have mutants in the MCU
Taron Egerton would make the perfect new Wolverine - Hugh Jackman would absolutely approve and Taron totally fits the build!!!
No and no.
Scott Eastwood be kl
still can’t believe bryan singer had mystique pull wolverine out of the river (when it made sense if it was stryker) just because he thought “it looked cool”
Regardless of the reason, it's been a blessing in disguise. The Fox properties have been spared from the mess the MCU has become.
I didn’t even realize there was a different Spidey-man becuase I haven’t forgotten about Tobey’s Spidey and Garfield’s Spidey was still fresh to my memery.
THIS is the channel now
Good video...
THANK YOU FOR THIS! As a older 44 year old fan of the 90's comics X-Men. I have been patiently waiting for decades for a real MCU version of the X-Men! Short Wolverine and all! But now, I doubt we will ever get it. I say Marvel should've just slowed down the Avengers properties after endgame and went right into the X-Men extensive universe. People are too young to remember, but the X-Men were the most popular team in Marvel.
we need erik voss to step up and produce a mcu xmen
Do the prestige breakdown
you are essential. thank you
I was waiting on a storm movie but I guess I should let go lol! It’s been decades of a dream and hope though
good Kevin Smith Photo... Kicking it old school hahahaha
11:52 VOSS with the "I Got a Microphone" zingier😏😅
Wolverine should have a producer credit.. I mean, he's really the biggest reason why x men are so huge on the big screen
Hugh Jackman
Wolverine is a fictional character.
Could you do a deep Dive on Bicentennial man ? Really deep emotional movie on the nature of the human condition. What does it really mean to be human. I feel like it's really a propos with all that talk about AGI. We always hear about how scary it can be but here is a beautiful movie about how beneficial it could be. Anyway. Just a thought.
I feel like it's because they have no idea what direction they want to take the MCU in as a whole given all the issues it's been experiencing in the past two years. And perhaps they know they are slipping and do not know how to pivot?
What kind of energy was in that bangal, that activated Ms Marvel's mutation? They set the stage for this same energy from the Noor dimension - where Djinn come from - to possibly activate a global activation of mutant abilities. The "Snap" didn't do it (containing every known energy in the Universe) - the second "Snap" didn't either. So it must come from another dimension.
You think calling it the Noor Dimension might in fact be a reference to how it’s actually a different dimension separate from Earth?
Fun Fact: It’s inspired by the Light Dimension from the comics which is a reality filled with photonic energy that helps create Captain Marvel.
@@ObsessiveGeek yes...
like yes good video as always but i mainly clicked bc Eric calling it Invosstigations is so funny 2 me 😂😂😂
I think a lot of it is probly feige need for secrets. Didnt even think about needing to wait for deadpool 3 though thats interesting. Im still leaning towards mutants being introduced through incursions maybe in doctor strange 3 wich isnt anywhere in sight so far so im not getting too excited for xmen yet
Mic drop on that Jonathan Majors comment at the end lol
that last brian singer joke was classic
I need me some invosstigation!
Wolverine BETTER be comic accurate. Short, hairy, cigar chompin, indestructible, berserker Canadian man’s man with a heart of gold.
Cast a no name - just like you did for Hemsworth and Hiddleston. Tap into Sarah Finn’s magic. The people don’t know what they want. Until you show them.
Invosstigation...
I see what ya did there Eric !
Bout ready to grab my pitch fork. Studios got money for contracted legacy writers, which is future pay for future work not getting done or present for. But now all the sudden theres no pay for a big enough room and adequate staff, no residuals for shows that getting continuously watched/streamed. No rating numbers to add to resume.
I know this is out of left field but could you do a deep dive on knives out
can you do one of the characters from moral orel?
I want to see Legion and more of the lesser known mutants in a movie
I believe that Deadpool 3 will use time travel retcon mutants into the MCU and that’s why they’re just now popping up with Ms. Marvel and Namor
Wowzer, Voss you've hit the nail on the head...Singer is likely the Truest Big Bad in the Marvel & X-Men Universe!!!
I was paying attention but to be fair it’s 3 AM. I feel like I missed a detail. Right there at the end, that comment about Brian Singer, what does he do that was so shady?
I think its just because of how reecent the last xmen movies was, the last one came out less than 3 years ago, and unlike spidey they don't have to listen to what another studio wants like having having a spidey films every 2 years, for the first 3 at least. As for xmen the last 2 films arent exactly loved, meanwhile the f4 havent had a film scince 2015 and they fully own and not a partner ship they can just wait as long as they want
11:53 Facts 💯
Hit the nail on the head on this one Voss
Taron egerton rumoured to play the main mcu wolverine as we know hugh jackman is reprising his role as wolverine but his version is fox from alternate world
currently rewatching the X-Men movies with my siblings 😊
I always assumed they were going to introduce the X-Men in Avengers Secret Wars
While I'm fairly eager to see the Fantastic Four, I'm not excited for the X-Men. It needs to be set in a different universe accessed by a portal for me - Mutants have never made real sense to me being set in the Marvel universe, it lessens the power (err... metaphorical power) of non-mutant characters with powers if anyone can have one, and mutants are persecuted, but superheroes aren't? It just never jived for me. Now, I love exciting crossovers, which is why I definitely propose the portal. The X-Men lore is definitely rich enough to exist by itself - Mr. Sinister, Apocalypse, The Phoenix, Sentinels, The Hellfire Club - There's a lot more than just Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants.
The fact you pump out mini documentaries every day is impressive! Bravo! I watch as many as I can :) ps Im so excited for Xmen! I cant imagine another Wolverine apart from Hugh, although I would be pumped for a Radcliff Wolv!
Watch Nando v Movies fancast Wolverine. It's great.
Jack Black as a variant Wolverine!
From what I gathered, Marvel was not allowed to talk about, prep, cast, write stories about X-men, until the contracts were up. Now the contracts are up it will take acouple of year to cast, prep, write the X-men stories.
You posted this before watching the video I assume.
Kevin Feige was ~27 when X-men 1 came out, not 24. Born in 1973.
Best Deep Dive so far. The intricacies of Hollywood contracts has always been a mystery. Legacy attachments are absurd. Thanks for clearing all that up. And thanks for dropping a nuke on Bryan Singer. 💣
Giancarlo Esposito for William Stryker or Trask. Not magneto or doom.
Or xavier!
Do a one video one lesser known characters like Howard the duck and all
Voss, you are the man!!!
It's more likely Fox tried doing what Marvel now does and says you're with us as this character for X years/X movies, whichever is first. And it's more likely the years will come up before the films.
I want them to make a good fantastic 4 movie. Get Brad Bird (The Incredibles) to direct. He has experience basically making the same movie after all.
so The Flash finally paid off Nicholas Cage’s Superman fighting a giant spider 😂😂
Hey Eric can u do a Deep Dive bout every Nick Fury Convo to see what all he really "Knows" because how he know Howard knew his son would be the answer to it all Ironman 2
Damn Eric. Creepy Brian singer.
ea voss ftw!!
My theory is marvel will reboot xmen as a whole avengers type series with everyone getting individual movies then coming together for a xmen collab after secret wars
