Film Trailer Deception EXPOSED: How to Spot the Lies | Invosstigation #1

- How do we know when trailers for movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, and Avengers Infinity War are LYING? Is deception in film marketing ever justified? Erik Voss investigates!
One recurring frustration among filmgoers is paying to see a film that doesn't live up to the hype of the trailers. After breaking down over 100 trailers for seven years at New Rockstars, Erik Voss is now an expert in spotting editing trickery and misdirection in film marketing. For this first episode of his "Invosstigation" series, Erik explores the industry of film marketing. How film trailers began, how they've evolved over time, and why audiences and studios have such diverging expectations for them. Should Hollywood studios be able to be sued for false advertising?
Welcome to The Deep Dive, a new channel in the New Rockstars Digital Network. Hosted by Erik Voss, The Deep Dive is the destination for more pointed media investigations. From full seasons of Marvel streaming shows to cult classic films, Erik will dig to the roots of the hidden agendas beneath every title.

Stones being removed from Thanos’s gauntlet is imo one of the best examples of trailer trickery being used for the right reasons, it added so much to the hype and made us speculate even more as to how many stones he would retrieve in the movie, it didn’t take anything away and was a clever use of lying
I agree
Exactly.
The flip side to this would be like The Flash trailer showing us all this Michael Keaton Batman footage, only to reveal his role has been cut from the movie entirely after the movie comes out. Like that’s the only reason I’m going bruh 😂
Now if only they would put all that cleverness of trailer editing into producing a decent script
Also the scene with Hulk running in Wakanda is not a deleted scene. Its purpose was to hide the conflict Hulk goes through and was never meant to be in the movie.
Yes!
Congratulations Erik and TDD team on this official launch day! 🥳
🎉🎇🎊🎆
This seems like a cool chanel!
@@DeepDiveNR Eric ..... Eric voss.... Big fan spiderman keep going
Just reading "invosstigation" I was like, wait a minute I bet we'll see Mr Erik Voss somehow involved.
Cheers from France! 🍻

This is like an Obama rewarding himself meme
If the court case costs them anything, I don’t think it will lead to a different style of trailer. I think what it will lead to is a disclaimer on EVERY trailer we see (whether it does or not) that it may contain elements deleted or altered from the final film. And when that message is on every trailer we see, we won’t pay attention to it anymore. They’ve covered their ass, and we get the same trailers.
I’m so excited for what’s to come! Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in creating this for us nerds
Awesome
I go to the gym and get girls? Do I still fit as a nerd?
Would love an invosstigation on the nature and history of post-credit scenes.
So excited for the new channel! Congrats on the launch!
Marvel invented post credit scenes and other followed suit, simple as that.
@@lees8359 I'm no film expert and would love to see a proper history of the post credit scene. Marvel most certainly didn't invent the idea. I can recall it used in 1999's Austin Powers 2, and even the quickest of google searches shows the concept goes back to at least 1966.
This type of nerdy behind-the-curtain technical explanation of the construction of film trailers is just the type of content I crave. Well done, Erik and New Rockstars!
I really hope that this lawsuit wouldn't have the backlash of having 100% precise trailers, because I love not being spoiled some major plot points
Simple solution: don't watch trailers.
If the lawsuit does succeed, I could see the result being something like: if there's a suitably famous actor featured prominently in the trailer, they need to be in the actual film in some significant way, or else it's deceptive advertising. So perhaps trailers don't include cameo actors in them anymore.
This is going to be incredible! Thank you all for bringing so much fun and positivity into the nerd space, even in the criticisms that you give. Its been so refreshing to see.I can't wait to see more!
THE FIRST DEEP DIVE VIDEO!!!
Congrats Erik and best wishes!
I have been watching for SO MANY years now and I have been loving what you do. I'm sure you will rock this as you (and the others) have been rocking NR 🎉👍❤

Erik Ive been watching your breakdowns on new rockstars for a minute man and I just wanna say that’s it’s great to see you branch off into your own channel whilst keeping the same creativity and energy, keep it up man.
Some times the teaser is just a nearly-completed scene (Finding Nemo) that is mostly the same but likely trimmed for film-pacing later.
Other times, Disney/Pixar have basically released a complete mini-scene that actually the whole sequence isn't in the film at all. In Frozen 2, they had that whole Sven and Olaf fighting over the carrot-nose on ice (itself inspired by an indy animated short, but lets not go into that right now), of which only one tiny bit (Sven spitting the carrot-nose back on Olaf) was used in the film. The entire teaser was just these two characters, mostly silent, that had nothing to do with the plot at all.
The trailer was for Frozen 1, not 2.
@@braydengraves4655 sigh, typing before coffee. i always make stupid typos like that.
We need a deepdive about why studios do social media events, because they affect a lot of movies these days, for example Ant Man 3 had mixed reactions and affected the box office
Already loving the feel of this new channel! I'm excited for the future here! Great job Erik and to all the team there!
Calling it now, this man's gonna go on national TV news for being so good 👍🏿
The first video I ever watched from you was your breakdown of season 7 episode 1 of The Walking Dead, ever since then I’ve been watching every video New Rockstars has uploaded and now I cannot wait to watch the videos you make on this channel! Thank you for all the years of amazing insights into the passion we all share
I’m so stoked for this channel and everything coming out of it. I love video essays and breakdowns, and the science and logic behind techniques used in media. It’s fascinating stuff and this channel coming from the same quality as New Rockstars is a perfect fit
I actually love this video, Erik you've hit the nail here. Can't wait to see more content on this channel. No pressure
This content is so so good. Would love a breakdown of content and casting announcements at events like Comic-Con, D23, etc. to see what kind of patterns you've observed there (and comparing it to leaks / rumors)
Congratulations Erik, the new channel is already a success
Erik Voss you are a freaking RUclips breakdown/deep diver GOD 👏🏽 so stoked for what’s to come from this channel. Let’s goooo!!!
Congratulations!! I am beyond excited for this chanel! I would love to see a video done on everything everywhere all at once!

Excited for this channel already impressed with the content!
Congratulations on launch! This video has got me hooked for more deep dive content! Very excited!
This was the best way to wake up today! I clicked on this video not even realizing it was the deep dive. I was genuinely interested in the content. This channel is about to make me a very happy man
The day is finally here! Well done Erik & team and congrats on this new and exciting endeavour.. I’m looking forward to all things Deep Dive!
Can't wait for this channel
Wow, this was an incredible "invosstigation"! My husband isn't a movie buff and he loved it, too! Thanks for creating something we could both enjoy 😃
so excited about this channel and everything to come!! this video is so incredible!
Loved this deep dive! So excited for whats to come! I have been watching you and the early new rockstars team since I was in 8th grade (I am now a Senior in college)! Always providing a good use of time for a study break or harmless all day loop whole of binging a bunch of videos lol. Congrats on furthering your journey!!
This happens a lot more lately because studios are "scrap-booking" their movies in the edit phase. Trailers released 2+ months in advance are merely "best guess" for what will be in the final movie because the studios are so incompetent they have lost the ability to actually film and edit the original story during filming. When they have no vision for the end product at the filming stage they are forced to try and mash something together in editing.
I was excited for the new channel, but you're already exceeding my expectations! This is awesome, I can't wait to see what else is to come!!
This is the first vid I've watched on the channel so far and absolutely loved it. This kind of almost journalist practice and exploration is my cup of tea. Congrats on the launch and being one of the only channels I actually subscribe to!
Love the video guys! The detailed background and everything was so facinating!
Congrats on the channel! Loving the content so far!

Congrats on the launch Erik! So excited to watch this channel grow!
Such fun and cool video, congrats Erik and the entire New Rockstars team! Excited about more content from The Deep Dive 🎉
This is so fun! Already loving the Deep Dive channel. I'd enjoy an "invosstigation" into film spoilers! It seems to have increased in recent years, or at least spoilers have a further reach now. We get apoiled these days wirhout even seeking it! How are the studios responding, how is it changing the film going experience, etc?
Interesting breakdown. I tend to avoid trailers for potential spoilers and - lately - to avoid seeing things that don't end up in the movie and can feel disappointing. Spiderman's scene with the cops not being in Far From Home was a good example, it seemed like a really fun action scene.
At essence, I don't mind trailers containing "fake" footage, because it's definitely better than trailers that completely spoil the plot. I also don't mind the idea of watching the trailer being a part of the film watching experience, and getting to see small snippets of what characters do outside of the eventually tightened movie script. That can be awkward for watching films years after release, when you're not going to even be aware of the trailers, though.
But by far the biggest problem is when trailers don't match the tone of the final movie. Whether that's because of a change in direction after early trailers or because of intentional dishonesty, nothing feels worse than going to see a movie expecting one experience and getting another. To keep using the MCU examples: Age of Ultron is an awesome movie but it gets a lot of flak because it's early trailers showed a really dark, ominous, and interesting tone that was almost entirely lacking from the movie. It sounds like, from what I've heard, the recent Ant-man Quantumania film suffers a similar problem. The original teaser got me really excited for that film, and it sounds like it's kind of a goofy mess instead of the dark tone the teaser conveyed.
The Mel Gibson film Payback was portrayed as a comedy in the trailer but it really wasn't all that funny.
Loved this so much! So excited for the future of this channel!
I love this Erik!! Bless you and congratulations, can’t wait to see what the future holds for this channel!
I'm so excited for the launch of this channel!!! Loved this first video! I feel like there was so much quality content in that 16 minutes that it seemed a lot longer! 😁
Congrats Erik! We really enjoy the new format and look forward to all of your upcoming videos!
Congratulations on the new channel! Love the content!
Great video Erik! I'm looking forward to seeing more videos on this channel. I'd love to see you discuss movie posters and their stylistic trends. It seems like nowadays, so many posters look almost the same, especially in the superhero genre. It would be cool to see you explore various trends across different movie genres and why so many films are defaulting to similar styles, and what posters convey about the movies they are promoting.
Love! Keep them coming, love the inVosstigation!
Excited for this channel, can’t wait to see what comes
I love it. Congrats on the new channel Erik. This is gonna be fun
Amazing video, well done! I'm very much looking forward to more invosstigations and deep dives!!!
Happy launch day!!! Voss is boss! Wishing you and the channel all the luck and success you deserve. Looking forward to all the great content.
Wow! So cool to learn about the film and trailer processes! I like the direction of the new channel, feels very educational! 🎉
So excited for all the vids coming!!
I did not know this about trailers, and this was so informative
Loved that “invosstigation” - that’s not going away any time soon! This sort of deep dive into aspects of movie making is great. Would love to see you dig into the history of other common action movie tropes like the “that’ll come in useful later” moment. You know, “Hey, Ripley, while we’re flying through space to the infested planet why don’t you have a play around on that cargo loader exo-suit!” Or maybe the Wilhelm scream through history? Or… or… or…
Letsss goooo! Very hypedd for this channel!!
congrats on amazing new channel, hope to see some amazing content ! you are amazing Mr Voss!
I love this Deep Dive into how trailers and audience expectation correlate. This was actually very eye opening because i had never really thought of teasers and trailers in this way before. I definitely want to see more of these.
first of all congrats on the new channel, looking forward to what comes here next.
it is a very interesting subject that you also briefly covered on new rockstars.
i think what bothers me the most is using the trailer to market the movie as something he is not, not the tone or the theme of it at all.
and a lot of the times the marketing i used wrongly against us the consumers to go watch movies with our own expectations and than just avoid them altogether.
i think studios will find a way to keep doing what they're doing a lot of the times, using probably a carefully put warning or some other bs to justify accentually fraud.
also another issue of course is shoving people trailers down their throats especially in the the theatre itself and some people don't even want to know anything about it..
Love the new channel already! This is a video I’m going to share with a film production class!
Wooo! So excited with this channel!
Lol, scrolling through my feed I saw thumb the and clicked it, just to be welcomed by Eric and realizing this is a deep dive. Sure enough you created something I clicked on without a notification. Oh yeah, I didn’t get a notification that you posted, even though they are turned on.
fascinating invosstigation. i think it highlights the struggle between film maker and film goer; which is ironic. they both want good movies to go to. great work!
great start to what will undoubtably be a great channel!
Congratulations on the new channel!
Very interesting video topic, really enjoyed it. Love the concept of this new channel and can’t wait to watch the WandaVision and Loki videos!
Thanks Erik, and the DeepDive/NewRockstars team, for bringing this kind of content. Not only you catter to movie topics I resonante with in both channels, but in this instance you taught me something new about the process of the teaser-tailer-film-release atmosphere. I feel like this Deep Dive videos have been teaching/reconfirming me stuff I knew a little. So pls keep up this great work you all do. Very much appreciated from the screenplay-director-maker heart and brain of a fan from many many years ago. Good luck today and always!

How did you not use this sooner 😂😂
So excited to see more Deep Dive videos!
Great topic for your first invosstigation, Mr Voss!!
Bravo! I look forward to future episodes! 🙌🏼
Awesome, love this Invosstigation. Looking forward to more.
This was awesome! So engaging and informative! Can't wait for more!
Eric I'm here and enjoy every breakdown stuff you do
This is such a great video. Thank you Erik and NR... Really excited for this new channel!
There's so much more coming!
Oof that dig at Quantumania near the end!
I wondered whether you would bring up that recent case, and you did not disappoint! This was good!
IF you're taking suggestions, here's a topic: Spoilers, Hype and collective viewing experience. New and exciting plot details always hype us, but where's the line that declares it spoiler. You can use A Song of Ice and Fire and it's Alternate Universe adaptation Game of Thrones (Yea, that's how I cope). That show is how a lot of Reaction channels began (bringing in the third part of my suggestion).
Appreciate all the breakdowns you and NR team does! and wish you luck with this side channel, and future Invosstigations!
That was a very thorough and extensive research, I'm stunned! Good job Erik! The main takeaway from me is it is unreasonable to expect a movie to remain set in stone during its making. Here is an example. In 1976, Sidney Lumet directed "Network". That movie had an acclaimed screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky who wrote the script under the condition that it would translate to movie without changing so much as a single word. Even though the movie crew tried their best to fulfill the requirement, the lead actor Peter Finch messed up one of his lines while filming a very demanding scene. This take could not be reshot due to the strain of the actor and, as such, we remember the iconic line "I am as mad as hell, and I won't take it anymore" (which was "I am mad as hell" in the script).
Invosstigation is my new favorite thing ! Congrats
First three videos I have seen is amazing... Very great start
That was a great vid looking forward to many more #DeepDives
Fire Deep Dive video! Congrats!
Hey Eric, loved this deep dive!! Thankyou so much for your hard work and effort for this. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💖 Why do some studios make a trailer 3 or 3 mins 30 secs long??
Very well put together content. Can't wait for what's more to come out of this new channel. Congratulations! New Rockstars.
This was so good! Would love more of this!
I love this so much Erik. I can not wait for more on this channel
