Fun fact Erik. My mother grew up in Astoria when this movie was being filmed she got to be an extra in the shot on the beach and it’s actually in the movie.
I watched this movie at a drive-in theater on the roof of my parents car. My dad would put a blanket down and my brother and I would lay up there. One of my favorite childhood memories.
I was 5 when this movie was released. Was down visiting my oldest Aunt in a town we didn’t live in, my youngest Aunt who was 13 and my oldest cousin was 6, we all got together on a bus to go to the local mall that had a theater in it to see this movie. On way to mall we were not sure if we were on the correct bus so they sent me up to ask the driver and make sure this bus was going to the mall. It was and we did see the movie. I don’t remember how we got back to my oldest aunt’s house.
Remember a time in Grade School, there was a movie night with this. Right behind the old radio shack, and they had a lot of pizza and had this movie playing there outside. It was probably 2010, and it was an awesome time because its such a classic movie
Amazing how much a young Aston and Brolin look like actual brothers. Great casting. It’s truly amazing how much this ridiculous pirate fantasy has stood the test of time.
Because it’s archetypal. The Hero’s journey. The descent into the deep dark cave, get the gold, rescue the girl and save the town from the devouring Dragon. It’s all in there. 👍
I loved how Sean Astin and Josh Brolin were so young in this movie. They are my favorite characters. This movie was absolutely Fantastic. Loved the video this summer, Erik. Thanks for making my summer better. 👍

This movie was the anthem of my childhood. I was 12 when it debuted. As a 50 year old Gen X'er I can watch this movie anytime and it still gets me. Thank you so much for diving deeper into this classic! ❤
@soundguydon Absolutely! Since you're a Goonies fan, have you watched the more modern movie Super 8 or the Netflix series Stranger Things? Both would never have happened if not for Goonies in my opinion.
As an 80's kid, this was one of my favorite movies growing up, and still holds a special place in my heart. I can't tell you how many times I wished I was a Goonie, to be able to go on adventures and come out with a pirate's treasure.
This movie is such an important part of my childhood. The first time I saw it was when my family was on a road trip when I was 11. It was the dead of night and all my other siblings were asleep (except for my older sister) while my parents were driving. My sister and I were in the back of the car covered in blankets watching it. We laughed so hard when Mouth was translating instructions for Rosalita. Though we did try to quite down since my other siblings were sleeping. Now every time my sister and I see each other we quote the movie! I had so much fun and it is one of my favorite memories. I am a massive 80’s fan and this was around the time when I was really getting into the era. I was already in love with the music from the 80’s what with growing up listening to it and delving deeper into it around the time I saw the movie. I even tried to style my hair like Mouth. My dad always likes to tell me how when he was a kid he and his friends were literally like the Goonies in which they actually all rode their bikes to go see it for the first time. This movie is such a big part of my childhood and I love it so much. Every time now I go on a trip I make sure to watch this movie. (Also kind of random question, but has anyone noticed that the actor who plays Troy in this movie also plays in the Jessie’s Girl music video? I could be wrong though.)
Greatest movie of all time. It's got everything: adventure, comedy, drama, romance... I was worried it wouldn't hold up watching it as an adult, but I still adore it.
As a kid we rented the vhs so much that the folks who owned the video store eventually told my parents we could keep it. Love your breakdowns of these classics!
NGL, had tears in my eyes by the time you got to 18:57. Just such an incredible movie, my sister and I grew up watching it, and is still a family favourite 30 something years later. You know a movie is special when quotes become part of the family vernacular, and "Hey you guys" from Sloth is something we regularly quote to each other.
As a person of color who grew up in the 1980s, “Data” is iconic. In both Temple Of Doom and Goonies. What kid didn’t want to go on treasure hunting adventures with Indiana Jones or their neighborhood friends? And the fact that he is not just a stereotype or a sidekick, but an actual hero with real stunt work in both films in so friggin’ awesome. We love him!
One thing I noticed when watching Goonies years ago that I couldn't believe: In one shot there's a calendar on the wall (I believe it's when the kids are in the kitchen and Chunk says "God, I'm depressed" after Troy's father leaves), and the calendar is dated October 26, 1985, which is the same date that Marty goes back to 1955 in Back to the Future. Also, Mrs. Walsh was played by Mary Ellen Trainor, Robert Zemeckis's wife at the time, who also played one of the 2015 police officers in Back to the Future Part II.
@@palmsquad4 I noticed it as a kid in the early nineties before RUclips existed, and I think other videos corroborated what I had assumed at the time was just wishful thinking.

I think it'd be fun to bring everyone back for some sort of a reunion to Astoria and then have them decide that they're going to go scuba diving to find the pirate ship. Now that they're all much older, it'd be along the lines of a mid-life crisis movie where they want to relive their youth by going on "one last adventure". I'm not a writer so I don't know how you'd make it fun with different twists and turns, but having them finally recover the treasure would be awesome. It'd also be incredible to see all of the cast together again.
Sadly, I don’t feel any writers have the freedom to write like this anymore….like they did in the 80s and early 90s. I like your idea a lot. Let’s say I love what it could have been

This movie came out when I was a kid, I liked it, probably watched it ten times, but it did not hold a place in my heart. Thank you Erik Voss and the Deep Dive team for strengthening my emotional connection, I need to watch this again.
When this came out when I was a kid we didn't even have a vhs-player at home, we had to rent a moviebox and could only keep it for a day before we had to return it, so naturally me and my brother watched the movie 5 times before we had to return the thing just in time for the video store to close. Fond memories!
I just saw this last week accompanied by the Grand Rapids Symphony. It was incredible and I got to share the experience with my daughter. I adore this movie.
This was the first live-action movie I remember watching and enjoying. My sister and I watched it while we were sleeping over at my cousin's house. Her husband picked it; spot on pick.
Erik, that could be an interesting sequel, the grown up kids trying to find the pirate ship to get ALL the “rich stuff”! To save something important in their current lives, like they did for the Goon Docks.
Thank you so much for doing these videos... they remind me and support just how pivotal and truly special the movies of my childhood really were! It's one thing to say that when you're a kid a pirate movie like the Goonies would be appealing to any kid, but the themes of community and perseverance and survival were on full display in Goonies... themes that would later shape this adult and even to this day think of Goonies as not just a classic but a masterpiece of adventure and rights of passage ;)
When I lived in Portland I went to Astoria to see the house from down the street. Tons of signs to not go up the street. Had a giant blue tarp to try to block photos. The docks by the sea lions really give a great photo opportunity to see the house.
Another fun detail, at 18:02, when Sloth opens his shirt revealing the Superman T-shirt underneath, we hear the Superman theme from the movie Superman by John Williams.
As a child of the 80s this whole month has been an amazing walk though my childhood. "HEY YOU GUYS!" was such a staple of pool parties and birthday parties 100% because of this movie. It was probably also the cause of quite a few broken bones as kids stupidly jumped off of stuff.
Watching your Deep Dives take me back, not just to the movie, but to the FIRST time I saw it. You breathe new life into them, make me appreciate them on a deeper level, and give me the same chills as that long ago first viewing. It may be out of left Feldman, but possibly The Lost Boys for a Deep Dive?
I love this movie. Fun fact; a friend of mine was given the nickname Chunk due to The Goonies and now, 35yrs later, that is still the name pretty much everyone calls him.
Wow I love this! I have been trying to my damndest to dive into the world of writing lately, and Goonies (thanks to my amazing brother who grew up loving this movie) is such an inspiration. Thanks for doing these :)
GREAT BREAKDOWN ERIK ! Thank you for this . (Btw huge fan of NRS and your coverage all these years) This ,by far , is my favorite movie of all time (I’m aging myself a bit 😅) Little Tid bid: the deleted scene with cassette player and the octupus had a song playing by The Goon squad (name of a freestyle/80s pop dance group created by producer Arthur baker specifically for the film ) entitled “eight arms to hold you” - that’s why it’s on the official soundtrack seemingly randomly - which became a hit on its own even tho it didn’t make it in to the movie .
A. Sharp and B flat. I watched this movie before I became a musician and so I didn't realize at the time that those were the same note. Good catch on that Voss!
At the end, Data spoke in Cantonese, “Wow, this thing is really strong”. It meant a lot growing up in the US to hear Ke Huy Quan speak my native language in Spielberg films.

When this came out when I was a kid we didn't even have a vhs-player at home, we had to rent a moviebox and could only keep it for a day before we had to return it, so naturally me and my brother watched the movie 5 times before we had to return the thing just in time for the video store to close. Fond memories!
I've been waiting for a video like this for a loooong time! Thanks Eric
Thank you for this video. Parts I've heard before, but this was a fun trip down memory lane with new information and energy.
I just saw this last week accompanied by the Grand Rapids Symphony. It was incredible and I got to share the experience with my daughter. I adore this movie.
OMG I would LOVE to see this with a live symphony!
@@RodneshaGreen It really was incredible. I believe next year they are also doing Black Panther as well so that should be pretty interesting.
This was the first live-action movie I remember watching and enjoying. My sister and I watched it while we were sleeping over at my cousin's house. Her husband picked it; spot on pick.
One of my favourite movies as a kid from the 80s.
God i love this channel voss is the boss when it come to breaking down films keep it up deep dive love from uk ❤ .
Erik, that could be an interesting sequel, the grown up kids trying to find the pirate ship to get ALL the “rich stuff”! To save something important in their current lives, like they did for the Goon Docks.
One of my most cherished childhood movies. Superman and Goonies were on repeat. Basically, Richard Donner was the greatest.
One of my favorites. I love how dark it is.
This was my childhood
@@DeepDiveNRMy favorite 80s movie ever!
Probably one of my favorite movies of all time.
Ahhh the nostalgia! I still love this movie. Just reminds me of my siblings and I watching and loving the chaotic scenes! 😂
Great video! Love this content! Also, 15:04 sloth calls the sheriff? Lol...
I loved this movie when I was younger great work the Deep Dive
@@DeepDiveNR I love the channel and also the New Rockstars
Thank you so much for doing these videos... they remind me and support just how pivotal and truly special the movies of my childhood really were! It's one thing to say that when you're a kid a pirate movie like the Goonies would be appealing to any kid, but the themes of community and perseverance and survival were on full display in Goonies... themes that would later shape this adult and even to this day think of Goonies as not just a classic but a masterpiece of adventure and rights of passage ;)
Outstanding. This has been the best video from this channel I have seen.
Geez… such an integral part of my childhood!!!!!
The Goonies is still fun to watch now in 2023. And I remember the Cindy Lauper Goonies song.
Oh! MY NOSTALGIA!
(Btw huge fan of NRS and your coverage all these years) This ,by far , is my favorite movie of all time (I’m aging myself a bit 😅)
Little Tid bid: the deleted scene with cassette player and the octupus had a song playing by The Goon squad (name of a freestyle/80s pop dance group created by producer Arthur baker specifically for the film ) entitled “eight arms to hold you” - that’s why it’s on the official soundtrack seemingly randomly - which became a hit on its own even tho it didn’t make it in to the movie .
That maritime law ending... Is pretty damn impressive a hunt for a ghost ship at sea
Thank you for this deep dive Erik!
I loved the electric company reference. Watched that as a young kid all the time and it happened to be my introduction to Spider-Man…
Cipher is amazing in everything!
A. Sharp and B flat.
I watched this movie before I became a musician and so I didn't realize at the time that those were the same note.
Good catch on that Voss!
Don't touch Willies, good advice!
Goonies is a great kids movie, was one of my favorites growing up.
At the end, Data spoke in Cantonese, “Wow, this thing is really strong”. It meant a lot growing up in the US to hear Ke Huy Quan speak my native language in Spielberg films.
Memories.... 😢
