    • @roryforham

what valve wanted the classes to be compared to how they turned out is polar opposite. the original idea for the stick launcher is great area denial and you can mess up sentries and concentrated enemies quickly but it just turned into sticky spam. sniper was meant to be a class to pick one an individual player however sniper counters everything and we all know sniper is the most broken overpower thing ever to exist and valve still hasnt done anything about the hitscan god but splash damage classes have been balanced. so somewhat of a win

@@blazefactor6849 Part of that is demoman's default sticky being frankly *absurd*, and part of that is it not being great in CP 6v6's competitive formats, but most of it is that it takes a different skillset and mindset than most other weapons. Your skill improves with your ability to keep track of information more like an RTS than with 'sick 360 headshots' or 'rocket jump precision'. Most people get stuck trying to only lay one or two traps, trying to pay attention to them all 24/7, the issue is it's unfun for a lot of players to play, and it's a skillset that isn't cross-comparable with most other weapons.

    • @blazefactor6849
      @blazefactor6849 4 года назад +1

@@rocketrelm1125 While I do agree to an extent, there's also the fact that Demo already has a ton of defensive potential by nature. No matter what sticky you're using, you always have good access to strong spam and choke denial options. The Scottish Resistance gives you an extra bump on that defense, but in exchange, takes away more of the Demo's offense. This isn't a good trade, as it's a relatively small boost to his already existing abilities in exchange for less reliable damage, which is something demo struggles with.

The SR is my favorite sticky launcher and I see your reasoning and opinions on this weapon and I understand why. You use the stickies as a second primary.
I always concidered them a secondary weapon and relied far more on the pipes so the SRs playstyle come for easier to me. I love the weapon for it's improved ability to lay out carpets, cover multiple flank/choke points and because fooling people with a fake trap while the actual hidden one is just a few steps further is hilarious.
It can get hard to keep track of multiple traps at first that's true. But you'll get used to it over time, such as it is with most things in TF2. With enough practice and experience you'll even be able to effectively detonate traps you put into paths where you bareley see enemies, like a healthpack you know someone's on their way to because you saw them running there or the way to the objective.
In some very rare occasions you can even use a single sticky to knowck enemies into the actual trap (rather rare but funny when that happens)
All in all I love the SR for being a tad bit more strategic and giving me more control over a ceirtan area.

Overall if I were to rework the Scottish Resistance to make it more viable, I would probably go for some sort of "One big bomb" rather than a ton of "normal" ones. Whether it be a simple "this one stickybomb makes a high damage, huge explosion" or "this one big stickybomb explodes into multiple smaller grenades that explode quickly after". Mind you, I would definitely miss the 14 stickies that can currently be placed.

Yeah, the reason it feels like engineer is because well level3 engie requires a lot of multi tasking and that's something essencial for the SR you have to pay attention to all your traps, that doesn't mean that you have to cover every chokepoint with your traps, just cover 1 or 2 if they are close with multiple traps each, that makes it so once you set up you'll always have a safety net once you blow 1 trap

Not to mention that firing speed buff, you can put out all 8 stickies in the same time you previously could only put out 6 letting you be able to defend and even abuse multiple chokepoints.

I think the biggest issue with the weapon is that you can hardly use it to defend YOURSELF. With both other sticky bomb launchers if a scout/soldier/pyro starts chasing you, you have a chance to throw down a couple stickies to ward them off. With the Scot Res, you're forced to use pipes. Against scout, that's a death sentence, unless they're garbage you're fucked. Every other class is still going to give you a run for your money in that situation too (except Heavy). Hell, even a sniper can rush you down with the SMG and win in that situation. I think the best way to buff it without completely reworking the weapon is just replace the arm time penalty with the Love & War nerf to stickies where they had a massive damage penalty for the first 2 seconds after firing. Accomplishes the same thing as the current stats but you can still somewhat use it for self defense. On top of that I think it would be good if each individual bomb got a 5% damage bonus based on the number of bombs you currently have out, which would make it so that you can have 14 stickies on the ground and each of them has a 70% damage bonus. It would take longer to set up but you'd be able to set up traps it a lot more locations at one time.

As an engineer main first and an everything else second. I find that one of my favorite (often forgotten) uses of the Scottish resistance is (big surprise) Supporting engineers. In the event that a demo is sticky spamming a sentry nest, I always find it handy to leave 1 or 2 stickies around the engie's setup. this makes it so that if the engi calls out he is being spammed by stickies, you can instantly destroy all the stickies around his setup. its surprisingly useful in pubs, but I have never tried it in comp.

A couple friends of mine once talked about how to make the SR live up to being a clearly defensive secondary. The one idea we liked the most was a proximity mine layer, and we must've talked about it for an hour about balancing it and making sure that it isn't brain dead, but doesn't dominate. I think we got close to the idea, but looking back we may have missed some important details that could better achieve the idea without being overpowered.
    The New Scottish Resistance
    - 25% max stickybombs deployed. (6 max)
    + 0.8 sec priming time
Bombs detonate 0.4 seconds after an enemy gets close enough
    - 15% base damage on auto detonation (102)
+ 15% base damage on manual detonation (138)
Stickybombs can be broken by explosions and airblasts.
No Random Crits (Imagine placing a proximity mine that can delete everything that isn't an overhealed Heavy)

As somebody who's been playing MVM since it's inception, as well as having 300+ tours in 2city alone, I'm rather mixed on the ScoRes.
I actually think the stock sticky launcher is still an all around better weapon, as the faster detonation speed allows demo to both output high damage, as well as become an excellent crowd control class.
Things the stock sticky does well:
    - Pick off uber medics
    - Efficiently clear hordes of "trash" robots
    - Traps are quick to set up, and require little commitment in case a separate lane is lost, and you need to help out.
    - High DPS that is only limited by your need to reload
    - Crit traps that can one shot every standard giant sans heavy
    Things Scottish Does well
-Can handle large groups of medic bots (think the Giant crit soldier with 13 medic bots on Wave 1 of Metro Malice)
-Traps do more damage, meaning one shotting giants with crits are easier compared to stock.
    - uh
I've had plenty of Mann Up Matches where I've out damaged even our Heavy, without being babysat by a crit medic, and have had matches that pit me with a high tour count ScoRes demo, and I still manage to both out score, and out damage them. It's not a bad choice, as a good demo can still make use of it, and I even think it works better than the sticky launcher if you're going for an upgraded Pipe Launcher build instead, as you have access to higher burst damage, and slightly easier medic picking.

I think you kinda hit the nail on the head here. The concept of a defense oriented SBL is not inherently bad, but the clunky nature of resetting your traps and having to reload quite often means getting caught out of position more than you’d like. Ideally this weapon would be extremely good when you find a choke or want to hold down a flank route, but bad at dealing with engie nests and enemies in moderately wide areas, but it’s really only middling at the first thing because of how long setting up a trap actually takes

It is a fault of the weapon that you have to reload quite often and it leaves you vulnerable to attack, this is just a fact, and why most Demos prefer either other sticky launcher

I find the carpet bombing method to be the most effective overall. Lay them *everywhere*. In the heat of battle most players will not notice where every bomb is unless they saw you fire them, so you can often find enemies blundering into them as they avoid your grenades.
As for the fun of the weapon? That's mostly when I just have a run of good detonations in different places killing unsuspecting enemies who though they had the drop on me. Makes me feel like I'm the conductor of an orchestra of high explosives.

  • @TheDunsparceGames
    @TheDunsparceGames 3 года назад

my problem with the scottish resistance is that it fails to even do what it was designed to do (sticky trapping) better than stock or even the quickiebomb launcher
i think this has to do with 3 things:
1: the fact that you can put out 14 stickies instead of 8 means that it takes longer to set up traps
2: the 1.5 second arm time means you have to be setting traps way earlier in advance compared to stock
3: the fact that you have to be looking directly at your stickies or be directly under them to detonate them gives the user extreme tunnel vision and makes sticky jumping horribly awkward
    here are MY solutions:
1: remove the arm time penalty
2: increase the reload speed or clip size
3: remove the stat that makes it so you have to flick your crosshair to the trap to detonate it (although keep the ability to see stickies through walls) that way sticky jumping becomes consistent using this thing
4: add a new stat that gives it a 15% damage penalty when the stickies are active for less than 2 seconds, but increase their damage (up to 25%) after 2 or 3 seconds of being active
all of these stats would incentivize players to use it to set traps, but still give them the ability to use it offensively when absolutely necessary, although the damage penalty makes it less effective at sticky spam than stock or quickie

Can be selectively detonated by aiming towards.
    +6 Bomb maximum.
    +25% firing speed.
    +35% heavier bombs.
    +60% Bomb arm time.”
I kept the important stats and traded the less important ones for a better trade off (+0.6 seconds instead of +0.8) Bombs don’t detonate when underneath you because that was always a straight downgrade, you can just look down to sticky jump. I love the heavy bombs idea, so I also added that.

Like say you make two groups of sticky traps, one has 4 stickies on a door, and the other 5 are somewhere else. You don't have to look at them, you just have to press a key, like f or something. For example, if the bombs too heavy to push away, you'd essentially make door traps impossible to deal with, so the team would either have to go around or sacrifice someone to the trap and thats deeply unfun. I think the best possible thing you could do is just increase the clip capacity or reload speed to make the trap laying process less annoying.

The only change that i believe they should make to the scottish resistance would be adding a resistance to explosives or airblast to your traps so they dont move or fall off walls and ceilings as much as they normally would. Maybe even making it so they dont move at all. Or maybe making it like the opposite of the Quicky-bomb launcher where they gain damage the longer they're out and near a set number of stickies so that you dont have to set as many stickies as you normally would with the stickies right now (I've used the gun for a while, my favorite weapon in the game in fact!) and from experience i know that it takes about 4-5 stickies to kill any class at full health with overheal. But cuting that down and rewarding trapping with it could be cool. Along with preventing some stray rocket from rocking them out of place and all over the place.

I think the situation that truly epitomizes just how bad this weapon is, is this time I cleared out a scotres Demo's sticky trap while he was in the middle of laying it down down. I did it with melee, standing on top of the stickies, and he was unable to stop me because he wasn't in a position to do anything about it himself. This weapon can be good when used correctly (and when people on your team have more than a couple brain cells and are actively protecting you), but even then, you'd just be doing so much more for yourself and your team if you just used stock.
Personally, I think the two best buffs they could give this weapon are as follows:
    1. Replace the longer arm time with a 80% damage penalty for the first 2 seconds after firing, you can still det stickies at the same speed as stock, but you're going to do heavily reduced damage. This would allow you to use the bombs to stagger and disrupt enemies trying to rush you, and make it so that your bombs still present a threat when you shoot them (albeit a heavily reduced threat), as opposed to them taking so long to arm that you may as well just accept death if a random scout appears.
    2. For each bomb that is active, give all bombs a 5% damage bonus, this would cap at a 70% bonus for each bomb at 14 bombs active. Make it so that this bonus does not take effect until the bomb has been active for 2 seconds. This would allow the demo to effectively cover a much larger area, as now instead of needing 3-4 stickies for an effective trap, you now only need 2 or maybe 1 depending on what class you expect to walk over it.
You still wouldn't be able to use the ScotRes for direct combat as effectively as stock or the QBL, but it would absolutely make the weapon a lot less of a headache to use.
Maybe also give the bombs a proximity flare that makes them flash whenever someone gets close to them, so that you can see to det even when you don't have a direct line of sight. Although that could potentially be a little bs to play against, which is why I'm not saying it's a necessary buff.

If you're a person who loves playing on defense like I do, the Scottish Resistance is actually a lot of fun. It's great for area denial like you said, which can help lock down hotly contested areas where no other weapon I've used can. It's also a pretty decent point defense weapon if your enemies aren't smart enough to destroy/move the stickies before running onto the point, and if you can hide them somewhere not too obvious they're even better. I play a lot of CTF, a gamemode often decried as the most boorish gamemode, but I like it and the Resistance is handy for making good and sure that the scout who tries to swipe the intel will be good and mutilated.
Other than its gimmicks, it's just a significantly more powerful trapping weapon that can double your maximum instantaneous DPS or spread it out over a much larger area, not to mention that you can watch your stickies disappear/get blown around and know an enemy is there, even if you don't have line of sight, making it a situationally useful sensor array of sorts.

They should replace the longer arm time with the stickies being weaker when when fired but grow stronger the longer they're left un-detonated. This gives you a weaker, yet still effective, way of sticky-spamming but you can sticky spam whilst you have a trap set-up.
From there you can either keep the firing-speed increase so you have the same DPS as the default when sticky-spamming but you have less damage in your clip or replace the firing speed buff with an increased magazine so you have the same amount of damage in your clip as the default but it takes longer to use it all but you can set down all your stickies without having to reload.

I generally think the TF2 classic mine layer is a better implementation of a multi trap weapon. You have 3 fairly powerful bombs that go off automatically, so so can place them independentely and don't have to worry about keeping tabs on all the traps. The problem with it is that it still can be spammed blindly, especially since they sort of bounce and slide.

What I'd do is remove the attack speed boost and instead have it so that it fires a cluster of upto 4 stickies per shot in a set pattern. The spread of which depends on how long you charge so single click will place em fairly spread out while a full charge will have them stacked at close range but at long range they'll land in a small spread.
This would allow rapid and mobile trap placement without having to sit there constantly waiting to fire and reload them, just 2 shots and you can put 8 stickies down in 2 seperate places and move on while reloading.
Also would have to make it so they don't start arming until they have landed (no quad sticky spam across the map) and give a 75% less blast damage to the demo using them for sticky jumping (as you'll be using 4 of them per shot).
Essentially allowing scottish resistance demomen more map presence as they can set up effective traps quickly and from range but at the expense of not at all being able to use the weapon in an actual fire fight, you'd also still have the detonation mechanics too.

You could either use a defensive powerhouse to lay traps on multiple areas and deny a great deal of area to attackers from all sides, coupled with smart pipes to be an insurmountable wall to the enemy team and live up to the class's defense classification
or you could unga bunga with stock.
Wonder what most people are gonna pick.

What i like about the SR is the denial of other team's sticky. I have the most fun whenever i try to do that
