My favorite kind of spy is the one that stabs you right in front of a sentry gun or your whole team, and dies a second later. But not because you're an especially important target. Because that was their brilliant plan all along.
Bro.. this happened. The enemy pushed and won. We had a heavy and two Uber medics, a demo and a soldier and one engineer with a sentry, he pulls up. Slaps the medic. The engineer puts up his wrangler and the heavy turns. The spy dies, and the enemy sniper pops the other medic. I'm here as a huntsman sniper, a demoknight runs. Slams the heavy, a soldier fires a three shot with the beggars. Than the heavy dies and I get rushed. I die, and the soldier and demo soon die, the enemy takes the point. And I now hate spies.
Holy shit why all the hate for Mr. P? He is a good spy main that doesn't focus on trickstabs, he makes consistent gameplay for spy if you need your fix, and on top of that he gives plenty of good tips on loadouts to use.

Just got an Ausie minigun, and i tought the same. I do get killstreaks when i kill a DR Spy. But theyre really easy to spot anyway. Btw, a tip i also use: Spies like to act. Well, breaking news: you can act as well. I usually act like im not aware a Spy is nearby. Then i wait untill he decloack (im always using a headset, so i can hear even his footsteps, sometimes), wait a few seconds for him to get close, and then i immediately turn back shooting him. Baiting a Spy works almost every time i try.

As a spy player with my fair share of experience in pubs and competitive , I'll just add to what you say in various sections of the video. 1:25 - I find that a lot of people do this certain tactic a lot, but tend to accidentally walk in a linear fashion to their source of metal (dispenser or ammo packs) and usually spy check either right before or right after they reach the metal source. Then they almost always walk to the closest side of the sentry and rotate behind it. I think people just subconsciously like to be behind their sentry so recognizing this pattern has gotten me my fair share of engineer picks. They also tend to rotate the same direction until their wrench hits the gun, then they either chose to reverse directions or stay going the direction they already were. This is another pattern that has helped me pick paranoid engineers. 2:15 - This is just a little tip but people can stand on that lamp post behind you, and it's a very good CnD spot, just check that before standing there or you might get ambushed. 2:42 - It is a very good idea not to backpedal versus a spy but not for the reason you said. In a situation where a spy is coming up behind you while you are engaged in a firefight with other players, you are most likely going to die weather you back pedal or stay in the same general spot while strafing. The reason back pedaling is bad is because you move at a slow speed and your back hitbox is wack. This makes it much easier for spies too get those wacky trickstabs where he was visible on your screen to the side of you but he still got the stab. Now I still recommend turning around and running away from firefights so you can't get stabbed then, but usually the most immediate threat is the person your fighting, so I still would say to only turn around after you kill them or if they duck behind cover for a moment then you can check your back really quick before engaging again. 5:11 - Another HUGE tipoff is when a friendly is looking right at you for an excessive amount of time. This can even be as short as 1-2 seconds, but that is a long time in a game like TF2. Teammates tend to keep their back too allies because they have nothing to fear from them, while spies tend to look right at enemies because they know that they can take damage from all of them. If you ever see someone starring you down, it's always worth a spy check. 10:30 - A general tip for fight DR spies is to glance at the top of your screen where it shows who is dead and who is not. When you "kill" a DR spy and he feigns away, his icon will not appear grayed out. If he actually dies then he will become grayed out. 11:35 - Your KS will increase. There are more things I could have added, (espicially in the "Finding the Spies" and the Hunting the Spies" categories) but I decided against it since it mainly only applies to competitive or spies that play competitive since they tend to do more big brain plays. I figured that because this video is based more on casual play I wouldn't include those tips. ~Also it would take a long time and I'm kinda lazy~ Hope this helped expand on what was already said in this already well informed video.

They literally just need to remove spawn wall hacks. Or at the very least they need to make it so once you leave the spawn room you lose the hack instead of a set amount of time (with a 10 second limit).
I find the wallhacks at the start very useful for figuring out which way I'm supposed to go when I'm new to a map, spies can stop the wallhacks with a lack of disguise, however 5 seconds of wallhacks only in spawn would probably be much better
That fail stair stab montage was so great along with that music selection! Great video! Demo has become my second favourite class because of you. I follow your tips while playing.
Another tip for duelling the DR : Wear some pyroland item. For some reason "killing" a DR Spy will almost always trigger his long laugh (the one from the Schaden taunt). And that laugh is almost as long as the DR's cloak time and will follow the Spy. So follow the laugh yourself.
great video toofters! I love your production skills and clips you use. Also, you are a pipe god. I commend you. Some of those pipe hits blew my mind. something else I may add when you're spy checking: if you see a spy on your team, and he's not wearing a disguise mask, and you can see all his cosmetics, you can disregard him. he's truly on your team. If a spy is disguised as a spy, he will always be wearing a disguise mask. It took me a super long time before i realized that, and it's kind of a good thing because that makes him the one class that you don't actually need to try and run through, or set on fire, to spy check (other than teammates that are clearly firing their gun) Tips for spies: you can really only do 3 things while disguised: change weapons, reload weapons, and use voice lines. If you do all three of these things a lot, it makes it a hell of a lot more convincing. I've been disguised as a heavy before, an enemy medic came up to me and started healing me and then immediately pulled out his ubersaw to spy check me. I did the spy call X+2 and that reverse psychology immediately made him stop spy checking me and instead, started swinging the saw into corners and shit. And then yes, I did backstab him. I felt like I was playing TF2 in 3019. anyway, again, great video dude! I love these. Also, hats off for making this more of a general video instead of specifically for demoman, even though I love your demoman vids. Keep it up!
2 tips not mentionned in your video against DR Spies: -Look the skull on the scoreboard when you "kill" a spy, if the skull disapears near the name of the spy you just "killed" really quick, this spy is still alive. -If you take the ammo pack dropped by the spy, and it doesn't give you ammo, this spy is still alive.
I read on the wiki that using the "battle cry" voice command with a certain weapon equipped (idk which but melee seems to work with all classes) your character will say one of a few special voice lines instead of the usual ones even against disguised spies You have to be looking directly at an enemy for it to work
Another very easy way of telling a Dead Ringer apart from a real kill is to walk over the ammo pack they drop upon death. A Dead Ringer pack won't actually give you ammo or play the sound of picking it up. It'll simply disappear when you walk over it and since you probably spent ammo on killing the spy, it'll be easy to tell if you got more when grabbing the pack.
Tip for "RIc TSebs": don't walk into the spy and walk back. With spys who walk around a corner to corner stab. Take a wide straife this also helps with fighting pyro. Trick stabs are obvious if you know how they work and airblast denys any trickstabs and some spys will get very tilted if you airblast them too much.
0:06 That's actually called a butterknifer or a SHPEE. Facestabbers are actually the Spy mains that know how to abuse lag, and will use settings to give them high ping and/or interp.
7:11 lol that ragdoll Also if you put your back against the wall, the Spy could still kill you with a revolver, especially the Ambassador, which crits on headshots, or the Diamondback if he has enough crits stored up.
As a pyro main, rule #1 against spies, never ever let them into melee range, especially with knives like the kunai that just let them facetank damage. Experienced spies will usually go for trickstabs or facestabs when caught out because of how the backstab mechanic works with hitboxes and lag where they get you to face one way by strafing left (or around corners), then they quickly go the other way before your client catches up, and you're facestabbed.
quick tip on how to catch a dead ringer spy. quickly look at the tab of the dead players the enemy team has in the if a dead spy icon appears the moment you kill an enemy spy, you can usually confirm that they used stock invis watch or the cloak and dagger. if a dead spy icon does not appear the moment you kill an spy, they are using the dead ringer
Another good thing if you're not quite sure is to check the scoreboard with tab, their name won't be greyed out if they faked it. has saved me more than once
Also if a teammate Isn’t using there item/weapon it’s safe to think there probably a spy. as a spy main I know this guide is very helpful and works so yeah all of these have worked on me before.
obviously this is 2 years too late, but another tip that wasnt mentioned for Dead Ringer spies is to actually check the other teams member list thing at the top of the hud; there wont be a grayed out Spy with the respawn icon to suggest one had died, this is what i do whenever i kill any spy and it works pretty well on its own even
Is this a series still a series for the Demoman or is it just in general. Please tell me it's for Demoman because as a Demomain I really appreciate that your one of the only demomains posting helpful content for Demoman.
I'm not sure how well known this is but for the Dead Ringer, any weapon that every hit shows up in the scoreboard (being Holy Mackerel, Hot Hand and Unarmed Combat) show up on the scoreboard as a normal kill instead of a specialized kill which has text after the kill icon. Again, I have no idea how well known this is Edit: This is listed on the Wiki, which I did not check before now
Honestly, as a "professional" spy, they all just attack your teammates when they are distracted or in a middle of the battle since they wouldnt hear the decloak and wont turn around
A simple anti-spy strategy is to get 2 or more pyros while on offense on a cart map and have them constantly run in circles around the cart W+M1ing. (The cart will refill ammo so ammo isn’t a problem). It can be a bit more situational if you are constantly in combat but when you are just moving the cart without much trouble, it works so well against spies.
My favorite way to detect a Dead Ringer (even though it’s almost always completely obvious) is that the ammo pack their corpse drops is fake and won’t actually give you any ammo. Really handy with Engie, since it’s so easy to notice when you collect metal.
I hate the deadringer. It is usually very obvious that a spy has used it, yet they now are nigh-invincible and will soon be back to try to kill you again
Another tip is that if you use the Holy Mackeral, Hot Hand or any other weapon that has a message pop up in the kill feed whenever you land a hit and you kill a Spy without the feed saying that you got a kill with the weapon, instead saying you only got a hit, the Spy deadrang.
Tip for detecting a dead ringer:Damage numbers. If a spy just respawned and instantly attacks you know he will be on full health maybe taken some fall damage, you know he's health is gonna be 125, you can use this to your advantage by seeing the damage you've done to the spy and if he dies to late, dead ringer. Let's take a rocket at its default damage. No matter how close you are to the spy even if you completely nullified damage falloff it will take 2 direct rockets to kill the spy unless you use the direct hit. Him getting one shoted by you just gives you a change to detect him.
btw, especiallyif you play heavy, and you suspect a spy deadringered, you can bait him by pretending to have fallen for it. Spin up your minigun, look like you're going into the fight, then turn around ~5 seconds later when the spy is too close to escape ^^
I know this video was made a long time ago, but since I main spy I want to sprinkle in some of the things I do. Whenever I’m in the back lines of the enemy to either take down their Teleporter or cause chaos, I always remove my disguise or put on a friendly in order to bypass the wall hacks for when people spawn. A spy should always assume that their disguise isn’t fooling anyone. A good way to test to know if you’re a decent spy or not is to not use a disguise when killing, not only will it help you time your stabs, but teach you how to be a better spy in general.
I've found that when a spy uses his dead ringer and you have kill sounds on, a kill sound doesn't play. So if you kill a spy and don't hear a kill sound, it's probably a dead ringer.
Here is a quote I came up with “the most dangerous kind of spy isn’t the one you see that guy is very easy to deal with. No the most dangerous kind of spy is the one you don’t see”
No, I just walk a straight line if you strafe left and right while walking, I just time it, and I know people are gonna be like bunny hopping isn’t a thing, but if you Bhop left and right, unless the spy can do that then you’re good. Also, about dueling spies, unless you are a scout, don’t back up, your movement backwards is slower I believe and we can get a back peddle stab against you, meaning we run at you, strafe around to your back, and you keep trying to back up trying to look at us and we can stab you before you look behind. Also, don’t pull melee out unless you go back and forth kind of like a demoknight, also it kind of requires you to move your mouse meaning a matador could work but not always, just moving left and right in short bursts gets you to eventually look one way a lot enough for us to stab.
My favorite kind of spy is the one that stabs you right in front of a sentry gun or your whole team, and dies a second later. But not because you're an especially important target. Because that was their brilliant plan all along.

-Look the skull on the scoreboard when you "kill" a spy, if the skull disapears near the name of the spy you just "killed" really quick, this spy is still alive.
-If you take the ammo pack dropped by the spy, and it doesn't give you ammo, this spy is still alive.
Toofty: And Finally The Flying Spy
Me: There is another the Rarest,🦀
I read on the wiki that using the "battle cry" voice command with a certain weapon equipped (idk which but melee seems to work with all classes) your character will say one of a few special voice lines instead of the usual ones even against disguised spies
You have to be looking directly at an enemy for it to work
Another very easy way of telling a Dead Ringer apart from a real kill is to walk over the ammo pack they drop upon death. A Dead Ringer pack won't actually give you ammo or play the sound of picking it up. It'll simply disappear when you walk over it and since you probably spent ammo on killing the spy, it'll be easy to tell if you got more when grabbing the pack.
I use this a lot, totally forgot to mention it!
Wait, no hitsound is played when triggering a Ringer?
Oh my god... I never knew either... Thanks for teaching me this, dude!
same. Like i mustve noticed cause now it seems obvious but it never actually stuck out to me
Tip for "RIc TSebs": don't walk into the spy and walk back. With spys who walk around a corner to corner stab. Take a wide straife this also helps with fighting pyro. Trick stabs are obvious if you know how they work and airblast denys any trickstabs and some spys will get very tilted if you airblast them too much.
7:11 it wasn't the "Hail Mary" that made me laugh, it was that rag doll!
0:06 That's actually called a butterknifer or a SHPEE. Facestabbers are actually the Spy mains that know how to abuse lag, and will use settings to give them high ping and/or interp.
I have some serious case of deja vu
7:11 lol that ragdoll
Also if you put your back against the wall, the Spy could still kill you with a revolver, especially the Ambassador, which crits on headshots, or the Diamondback if he has enough crits stored up.
Toofty: pls fix the literal wallhacks so spies don't get naenae'd
Valve: *updated localization files*
“Just go pyro”
**laughs in spycicle**
Take a shot everytime he says Spy/Spies.
quick tip on how to catch a dead ringer spy.
quickly look at the tab of the dead players the enemy team has in the
if a dead spy icon appears the moment you kill an enemy spy, you can usually confirm that they used stock invis watch or the cloak and dagger.
if a dead spy icon does not appear the moment you kill an spy, they are using the dead ringer
Another good thing if you're not quite sure is to check the scoreboard with tab, their name won't be greyed out if they faked it. has saved me more than once
12:38 That Spy who got Holiday Punched to death...
That's what friendly killers deserve.
Me: *follow enemy to stab*
Enemy: *turns around*
Me: So, you have chosen... -102
0:26 he really said 🌠
Also if a teammate Isn’t using there item/weapon it’s safe to think there probably a spy. as a spy main I know this guide is very helpful and works so yeah all of these have worked on me before.
obviously this is 2 years too late, but another tip that wasnt mentioned for Dead Ringer spies is to actually check the other teams member list thing at the top of the hud; there wont be a grayed out Spy with the respawn icon to suggest one had died, this is what i do whenever i kill any spy and it works pretty well on its own even
13:31 "not our finest moment"
2:41 same with trolldiers.
#1 rule: *D O N ‘ T . B A C K . U P .*
Me a spy main: you may have outsmarted me, but i outsmarted your outsmarting.
Toofty: dealing with spy
Pyro mains: Laughs in wm1
4:15 dont you love when two cloaked spies run into each other
Is this a series still a series for the Demoman or is it just in general. Please tell me it's for Demoman because as a Demomain I really appreciate that your one of the only demomains posting helpful content for Demoman.
Its general
I'm not sure how well known this is but for the Dead Ringer, any weapon that every hit shows up in the scoreboard (being Holy Mackerel, Hot Hand and Unarmed Combat) show up on the scoreboard as a normal kill instead of a specialized kill which has text after the kill icon. Again, I have no idea how well known this is
Edit: This is listed on the Wiki, which I did not check before now
Honestly, as a "professional" spy, they all just attack your teammates when they are distracted or in a middle of the battle since they wouldnt hear the decloak and wont turn around
7:10 who knew spy could cartwheel?
6:27 Cloak and Dagger spies: I don’t have such weaknesses.
When it comes to stair trick stabs... I know there is a 80% chance of failure, but i can't hold back. Those few successes are just that rewarding.
That last clip with the mann co store hat spy... not our finest moment
Something about accidently killing a cloaked spy is really special and should be immediately treasured forever
0:19 Me as a spy
0:21 Other as a spy
Thank you for this video. I was having a very frustrating time with spys and this video really helped me.
That poor spy at the end of the video... An F for that guy.
There was nothing he could do to get out of that situation.
My number one rule as spy is
Be random
People expect you to be in a corner so I cloak in a random place in the room they are in
5:54 “that was idiotic. Off to hang myself! Watch and lear-“
5:02 the ultimate perk of owning a 1/1 unusual
i love this spy that kept you at gunpoint of crit diamondback just so you would dance with him
there are the bad to mediocre spies, the ok to good spies, the great to annoyingly great spies, then there is Swipez.
8:35 damn, toofty be lookin might fine
the " and of course, the flying spy " line in 2019 : * joke
the " and of course, the flying spy " line in 2020 : * realistic
0:26 Simply majestic.
I play a lot of Medic so i knew the Uber thingy but i've never noticed the hitsound one. Thanks for the useful info
btw, especiallyif you play heavy, and you suspect a spy deadringered, you can bait him by pretending to have fallen for it.
If I had a penny every time I saw a spy failing to trickstab me, I'd be Gabe Newell.
I've found that when a spy uses his dead ringer and you have kill sounds on, a kill sound doesn't play. So if you kill a spy and don't hear a kill sound, it's probably a dead ringer.
On the top panel for casual, you can see the dead spy portrait if you actually kill him, if a spy dead ringers, you won't see that death portrait.
Was sitting in my sentry nest in 2 fort and spy walks in disguised as me like what was the thought process
1) jiggle
2) run on fencing
3) back on wall
4) be cautious when backing up
I'll keep these in mind thanks!
