    This video is on tig welding lap joints.
    I had some small drop pieces left over from a previous video and so i thought a quick video on tig welding lap joints in 11 ga crs made sense.

    It's so refreshing to watch a RUclips video where the content creator identifies a commercial as a commercial. It goes a long way to establishing trust.

    I agree with Danni regarding Jody's approach to selling his wares. He is straight up about it and always tells you ahead of time. He doesn't force it down your throat. He only shows you good stuff that he will use (and does obviously use in all his videos).
    The end result is not an advertisement. Its a friend telling other friends "Hey, check out this new thing I got. I've been working with it for xx days/weeks and I really like it. Let me show you WHY I like it and WHY I am using it and WHY I want to show it to you. If you want one too, I have some."
    No shill video. Just a friend looking out for ya.
    Thank you Jody!!! Thats one of many reasons you have the loyal following you do. You look out for us all and we appreciate it.

    Just ordered a Furick #8 kit and the mounting kit for #17/#26 torch from you. Great stuff in the store just wish I found it earlier.
    A few weeks ago I ordered a new regulator from a swedish welding store and they sell something called Tig-finger from weldmonger 😀. I bought one and the label pointed me in the right direction and I have now had a couple of RUclips evenings watching your channel, sooo much good information and super crisp welding shots. Really enjoying every minute!
    One thing I can't find much about is fumes and ventilation. For us weekend warriors a dedicated extraction system is only a dream and using a fan blows away the argon. I'm using a Miller/Elipse p100 respirator as often as I can and when I'm not sure what metal I'm working on. So much free scrap metal around with nasty zinc and cadmium coatings 😷

    I don't mind the "commercial" at all. I haven't done any TIG welding and was a bit confused about the hardware and the types of torches. This helped me a bit. It may be worthwhile for many viewers if you do a video sometime comparing the different types of torches and the variations and reasons for using one vs. another. This sort of thing helps us newbies determine what equipment to consider. I know you have talked about it here-and-there, but a more comprehensive comparison would be great.
    One thing you may have mentioned at some point ...I bet the pyrex cups don't scuff metal like the ceramic ones do when you are walking the cup.

    Another helpful tip on tight arc practicing that I've learned is favoring that arc slightly more on the flat piece as you see here. I learned that when I add tiny filler rod at higher amps. Like welding 1/8 steel and adding .045 filler. I like favoring the arc more on the bottom rather than the root. With proper torch angle it seems to prevent the rod from balling up

    Need your help jodie???
    I mainly weld aluminium 99% of the time-using gold tip tungstens which apparently are good for both ac and dc welding, anyway the other 1% of my welding is mild steel header tanks. They are 2mm thick mild steel. I buff any millscale off before i weld them and sharpen a boatload of tungstens before i start. Ive found the point blunts quite quickly even if i dont touch off on the parent metal. I end up only doing about 6 inches to a foot of weld before having to change out to a freshly sharpened tungsten-it does my head in. Anyway , any suggestions?
    My machine is a lorch and im using bout 100amps and about 10 litres a minute of argon. I also using just a wp20 torch with a no.5 regular(not gas lens) cup. Ive tried using 2%lanthanated but still fouling after about 6-9 inches of weld .rsvp an answer please

    I actually enjoyed the commercial content of your video. I think you may be oversensitive to the quantity of commercial content you add and therefore include very little of it. Its stuff I certainly would like to understand more of. The right gear and how to use it to your best advantage can be as important as your technique. Don't worry, you're not being a shill!

    Jody,
    I'm an older guy and my sight isn't as good as it once was so I have trouble seeing the weld. I'm using a Miller Elite helmet and sometimes I weld thin metal but it's too dark to see. Perhaps you could do a video on lens numbers and welding different metals and thickness. Do you ever need or use outside light to light the weld more? I do have your glass cup but haven't used it yet.
    Thanks for all your great teaching videos, I've sure learned a lot!
    Rob

    • @mattleicester977

      For as bright as the arc is while welding, you would think that provides all the light you would need, but an outside light is amazingly helpful. I am also in the bifocal generation, and between magnifying lenses and external light sources, my welding career has been extended immensely.

I have the CSS (can't see sh%!) and like the idea that is creates more light. Have you had this issue? Can you use it to weld aluminum? What is the max amperage recommended for these? Thanks

    • @weldingtipsandtricks

      I push them pretty hard without issues on the o rings. I think the #8 cup is rated for 200 amps and with AC or DC. But the #12 furick cup is rated around 175 amps for DC only.

    • @eddiekawecki2510
      @eddiekawecki2510 7 лет назад

      Not answering for Jody, just my opinion. First stick to the best welding procedures for the type of weld your doing. Then for me it's get as comfortable as possible, get creative, like bending the rod, positioning the mirror, put up a steady rest to lean on and torch and filler rod position when tig welding. Be as patient as possible and really focus and concentrate. Set up different practice scenarios on your own and practice, practice, practice. For me when the weld turned out great it was like WOW ! that was cool! Ed K. Cleve. Oh.

    • @goodweld7562
      @goodweld7562 7 лет назад

      MrCrunky92 Sometimes it's cheap steel that causes the dull grey color. But there are many things that cause it such as too much heat input, bad argon, not enough gas coverage or your material isn't clean enough.

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  7 лет назад +3

      not much difference for most applications S6 contains higher silicon percentage which can help float out impurities and oxides. S2 has less silicon but contains other deoxidizers. Both are good. I notice more difference when the puddle penetrates and the back side is exposed to air. S6 seems better for those situations

      Or don't you use 7018 rods with an AC welder?

      Normal 7018s don't run on ac, they make special ones for that. From my experience using both rods there is very little difference in starting, maybe try upping your current?

    You could probably ebay that weld piece for charity and do alright. Nudge, nudge.

    Anyone else cringe when he grabbed the steel with no gloves? 😂

    I hate tig welding steel, as I seem to always burn it by going too slow.😢

    Ok, I noticed today that you are wearing bifocal glasses. How in the heck do you weld with a helmet on and see what you are doing? I have a awful time with mine.

      I am wearing bifocals. But I also use a 2.00-2.50 magnifier in my helmet. I look thru the top of my bifocals which is easier for me

      I have been having a nightmare with my progressive glasses ended up without them on and getting in real close (short sighted) all good till the parts you are welding get in the way of your helmet. I have some close up glasses now which have helped, not into this getting old thing ! Thanks for the excellent video's Jody.

      Frank Mair 54 and it does not get better as older friends tell me ! always had glasses but when I had to go to the progressives the problems became more apparent, I have just brought a pair of auto welding goggles which are good in confined spaces less bulk and they don't fall off when working with your head upside down.

      I had a pair of prescription glasses made where the entire lens is the near vision prescription of my bifocals. Then I had another pair made because I liked them so much that I wanted one pair at home and one pair at work. Using my bifocals just messed me up as I looked up and down to see what I was welding.

      I’m 57, been wearing progressives for years. They had become useless for welding, and I need every advantage because I don’t weld often. When the arc struck, it was visually not in the same place as the wire or rod beforehand, literally jumped, ruined the start of every bead while I moved my head to locate it. Two solutions: one, get your optometrist to prescribe single vision glasses for the distance you need. Figure it out beforehand and tell him. I now have two pair like this, one very close, one fairly close. Two, try better progressive lenses. I switched from the mid-grade to the top grade Nikon lenses and it stopped the arc jumping on first strike. I can actually weld with them again. Magnification would be good, too.
