One thing that would help me a great deal would be a picture-in-picture or split screen to see the weld being done and also the foot pedal or machine amps to see when you are at full throttle and when you back off. I'm not advanced enough to tell by the picture. Keep up the good work.
Yes for sure. That would be good to do. Perhaps I’ll consider this, it’s be nice to get an additional camera setup for exactly that purpose. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks for all the good info! I just started TIG about 5 months ago. For some reason, I just can't seem to get the lap joints down on thin (.065) aluminum. The upper piece melts and the lower piece doesn't, it just turns grey. I can't get them to tack together. I've tried it clamping them to aluminum and steel chill blocks. Settings are 120hz, ~30 cleaning, tried 45-70 amps, 1/16" tungsten, and 1/16 and 3/32 filler. This is driving me nuts!! I have the same problem with t-joints. Only one piece is melting.
+Mike Feeley Thank you! I appreciate you checking this out! Yes, simple is the way to go. I was taught by basically the worst instructors when I started, so just trying to show people how to start in the most non-overwhelming way haha. Where did you teach at?
@@PacificArcTigWelding mostly on the job as a welding team leader for my employer. We would offten post jobs for welding in house, so I would be in charge of seeing if there was potential. Then I would train on the job .

Gravity gonna pull it that way! Whether you want it to or not. So being ready to have the puddle where you need it, so it doesn’t spill too far down, is key. Then just a matter of laying the dabs down at that point!

Yes! That’s a common electrode for sure, it’s always a bit of playing around to find the tungsten that works best. There’s never a ‘one size fits all’ type of deal for any consumable. Always good to try different options:)
Why do you whip away when you dab the rod? Snap nevermind that was for the first half of the weld. Our teacher said people would cut the tip off the tungsten 2 days before class ended. He also never mentioned that method. Thanks. I feel like with the point the arch jumps a lot..
This is great but you're welding tank armor compared to what I'm welding so it's a little hard to take it to wafer thin aluminum lol might well train her is having me fuse wallet without rod first I'm just trying to figure out how to not have to chase it lol
ouch! 1 way on that brushing brotha.. your digging the oxides back into the aluminum and contaminating it before you start, now when your puddle forms your enclosed environment in the shielding gas is going to have that oxide burn off into it and contaminates it. the point of the argon is to shield against oxygen. its not as apparent on aluminum but start getting into things like stainless that get into the ppms of oxygen present can really matter so its good to practice the theory all the time to be in the habit

I start really high on the pedal for sure, but once the puddle sets down and weds in, I back off to about 3/4 of the pedal. Obviously it differs for all kinds of configurations, but a safe plan is to start a bit hotter, then back off to what is "needed" to keep the puddle moving:) Cheers!

Aluminum TIG: always AC. All other materials using TIG torch: DC-. Most TIG welders can also be used for stick welding - in that case you'd use DC+.

Nicely done. Lucid presentation. Is not 180 amps a little high for 1/8/.125 or are you merely not going full throttle?

Question, I have an old miller I think from the 60s or 50s , AC only. Proper way to ball tungsten?? Thanks you.
Switch to DC, and flip torch/ground terminals to DC+. Then press foot pedal slightly and you’ll see it ball up:) SLOWLY...!

You could try anywhere from 140-160? Should be good to go:)
You can also use the " 1 Amp per thousandths of material" rule.
