  • On this weeks video we are returning to the basics of TIG Welding. Walking the cup is the first thing we teach our TIG students. Wrapping your head around what exactly walking the cup means and how to achieve it is the first step in training your hands to develop the muscle memory needed for consistent welds.

I just finished my first 2 welding classes, my instructor asked us if we wanted to see him do tig, so he sets up and starts going and it was SOOOO quiet. Not only that but it was kinda hypnotizing watching him do weaves and it just clicked in my brain that tig welding is actually art bro.

I've been welding for over forty years, mostly stick, MIG, and gas, but I've always wanted to pick up TIG. Today, I paid close attention to your technique and learned something about walking the cup. I've always understood the concept, but I've never had to use the technique, even with MIG; but after watching how you did it here, I understood the subtlety of using the newly-made ridge as a walking guide to create evenness in the bead's appearance. Thank you for the beautiful camera work; it greatly enhanced the learning experience.

Thank you for the comparison at around the 11:00 minute mark. I've been welding for a few years, still have much to learn, and just entered my first foray into the world of TIG welding. I got the hang of walking the cup with no filler (trying to build consistency before I tackle adding filler in). After much frustration I can now get a half-decent result. My current beads look like #1, and it was insightful to hear how it's what most people's beads look when starting out. I'm certainly no exception!
Thanks for telling us what to do if we want to change the appearance of the finished weld, I'll definitely be trying out the different weave patterns next time I get a chance. Cheers

We are doing Sched 10 Stainless Steel and I had no fucking idea what I was doing.. lol. I strictly learned how to pass that test Through this channel, believe that or not. I practiced for 3 hrs at the Hall then I went in the following Friday and passed the test, beginners luck I gues...
Since being on this project I have progressed a lot and mainly due to the other experienced Welder being super rad and helping me out so much. I am proud to say I am finally walking the cup on every joint now. Does it look perfect? No, but it's certainly getting a lot better. Thanks dude for everything you do, you kinda help change my life. Get some line paper or a yellow legal pad and practice at home feeding the filler in between the red line that runs the length of the paper, or in between the horizontal lines or on the blue lines one row at a time. Practice different speeds. And get some graph paper and score sections to feed the filler rod at different speeds. Bout to get this money y'all! Thanks WeldTube! You guys are the best!

As you gain experience from plate or dummy legs to Critical High Pressure (CHP) you will be welding per code. So be open minded of your preference.

Also thanks for showing this on plate with lines. Saves lots of time on prepping plates when I just want to practice walking

I usually come to RUclips welders to talk shit hahaha but this is quality stuff man for New comers and even myself I've been welding 10 yrs plus ....I know that's nothing but to still be able to learn is good man your made to teach you take the complicated stuff and make it simple gives new welders hope rather than discouraging them with how hard it's gonna be ....I'm subbed keep the good content coming
