    Im a teacher and i teach this to my studends but this only works in perfect fit ups some time u have to weld bad fit ups and that is where u have to learn how to weld big gaps and play with the wire but good technic👍

    • @douglasmueller4684
      @douglasmueller4684 2 года назад +1

      We found that when we welded crazy gaps or other bad fits we would feed each other wise through the pipe. Try it in you school tobget the hang of it. It does come in handy.

    • @gcwelds3481
      @gcwelds3481 2 года назад +1

      I do believe me i know about bat fit ups had to weld a 3/8 gap in one side and a 1/16 in the other one time 24in pipe made it work but hard but yes you are right they should teach different scenarios

    • @jeepwk6.5L
      @jeepwk6.5L 4 месяца назад +1

      Eh kind of. If your fit isn't completely jacked you can always swap to different wire size through the weld to accommodate for tight spots or loose spots.

    It’s so cool to see how many different techniques there are to achieve the same goal. Not to mention taking pride in a ones work and sharing it for people to learn from. I will have to experiment with this in the future. I don’t weld pipe but I do open root plate welding while fabricating things. I always preferred running hot with a tighter gap, which most other people seemed to run colder with a big gap. It’s nice to see how well running hot can work with the right skills 👍🏻. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • @galengarren7212
    @galengarren7212 4 года назад +81

    Good technique if you have a perfect fit and gap. The way the fits are now days that’s why a lot of welders go to the backfeed method to compensate for uneven root gaps or high low in the pipe in the field. Not taking anything away from the man welding he was slick.

      damn straight, real life dont throw gravy work at you very often.
      that said, to get a good idea of the technique and the principles a gravy setup doesnt let you get distracted from what the idea/process is.
      now someone will know how they can hit some speed in the gravy spots and slow down around the corner where fitment went south for whatever reason

    I was thought this technique by my welding instructor Dan Sterry out of Wyoming a long long time ago... Dan called it a "wiggle" root, I've come a cross more than my fare share of folks that thought I was nuts for not key hole and dabbing. It's nice to see other folks using this technique..

    @Weld tube - awesome video! The trick of controlling the root pass is to focus ALL of your attention on the BASE of the puddle and just watch how the puddle *wets* both ends of the pipes, and how it *flows* as you go along. In other words, don't focus too much on what you are *doing* (fancy weaving pattern, torch angle, etc.), focus on what whatever you are doing -*is doing* - to the puddle, and whatever the puddle - *is doing* - to the base metal.😉
    Yeah, it's kinda Zen, but once you learn the trick you can control the bead profile of any pass *instinctively*, in real time, forever.
    Imagine that the inside of the pipe is the TOP of the bead, (because it is) and you are welding "up from underneath". After you try a few welds and see what you are getting, you will know what needs to be done (speed up, slow down, weave more, weave less, change angle) to control the *bead profile* (inside and out).
    Most beginners are so concerned about weaving a particular way they were shown, or the *appearance* of the weld on the OUTSIDE (their side), they can't even TELL if they are making good penetration and bead profile on the INSIDE🙄which is Job #1 on the root pass. Take care of the base of the root pass, and the top will usually take care of itself. If not, its a lot easier to fix.
    BTW, don't be *too* proud of that little groove down the middle of the bead. Yes, it DOES prove good fusion with the base metal on both sides of the pass🤘 but it's almost a defect. If your pass was any deeper, it would be a crack. Yes, you're going to remelt the top of it in the next pass, but there can still be a *lot of stress* left in the root pass. Just because you left no voids or inclusions, it doesn't mean you made a strong, tough weld. That shiny, dead flat "row of dimes" has practically nothing to do with strength.
    An old experienced welder dude once said to me "the metal doesn't care HOW it gets into the weld, as long as it gets in there CLEAN, and sticks where you want it"😉 - as he showed me this *same exact* technique as a *stick welding* trick, using stick electrodes with the flux knocked off as the "lay wire". Works for MIG too.
