    "I went for a casual run today in the park and ended up being run at and followed for about half mile by this little cinnamon black bear who was fresh out of the den. I've seen plenty of bears in the wild, but this was the first time one had shown any interest in me. He must have been extra hungry and hoping for an easy target!
    Luckily this was not my first bear encounter as I have worked as a wildlife guide for Guides of Jackson Hole (www.guidesofja...) for several years, and have learned a good deal about the behavior of black bears in that time.
    Couple of things to note:
    1) This is a "cinnamon phase" BLACK bear....even though it is brown in color
    2) I had bear spray in my running vest and got it out immediately (but did not spray it as the bear never got within 20 yards)
    3) I did NOT run away. If I had, the bear could have thought of me as prey and chased me down. Being that I am not prey, I stood my ground when it charged (showing it that I'm not a prey animal) then backed away slowly
    4) I did NOT play dead. That may save your life if a mother bear with cubs is attacking, as she may perceive the threat to be over. But with a solo bear who is interested in you like this, it is not trying to eliminate a threat - it is trying to find an easy target. Don't be one.
    5) I kept talking to it to show that I was a Human and not to be mistaken for another animal
    Not all bear encounters are the same. In most cases, I've been able to just go around the animal. But this one was interested in me, so I had to change its mind!

      Ur absolutely right. The incredible burst of speed and stamina ALL bears have is terrifying. All I could think in the end when the guy was like WHEW im safe when the bear turned into the woods is NO UR NOT SAFE lol I was expecting the bear to come barreling outta the woods from the side lol. Just recently watched 2 fisherman get charged from a grizzly and it was literal SECONDS she was feet from their boat 😳😳

    For people that are confused about what kind of bear this is:
    The guy in this video is correct. This is a Black Bear. The American Black Bear is just the name of the SPECIES of bear. Just because the term 'Black Bear' has the color 'black' in it does not mean that all bears of that species are black. American Black Bears can come in different colors. Like cinnamon (the one is this video), brown, blonde, blue-gray, etc.

    Don't need bear spray. If he charges just reach down his throat, grab him by the tail and yank him inside out. Then he's inside out and heading the other way. I've done it plenty of times but mostly with grizzlies. Might be a bit harder with a smaller bear like that one to get your arm in his mouth. With little ones like that I just grab them by the jaw and shake the piss out of them. That scares em and they run off every time. I've done this with sharks too but only a couple of times.

If a bear is following you for any distance at all it is because it is trying to determine if it is a good idea to try to eat you there's nothing curious or friendly about it

      Guys read about this lol. Read about black bears silently stalking. It IS considered a bad sign actually. A bear openly charging is often more of a dominance or defensive thing. A bear silently stalking can be an alarming sign. Also standing up to black bears is sometimes advisable. Edit: to acknowledge the other comments attacks are exceedingly rare, however it seems the worst black bear attacks do start like this- silent following. Read about the west milford attack in New Jersey or about the bears in backcountry canada. It’s also usually young black bears like this.

    • @arieerkkila

    • @davidmiller1114
      @davidmiller1114 3 года назад

      Wrong, most black bear attacks are due to the bear being startled, cornered, or because of a nearby cub. Here they break into homes in search of food. Bears are curious, and they will follow, but it is not a sign of aggression. Simply move along and they will loose interest.
