    Bravo Maestro!
    All your interpretations deserve long life. I can't see any conductor in nearest future who will be able to deliver another version of everything you conducting with the fresher, more innovative and more HUMAN interpretation. Yours is in line with the current world . Sad, some people can't appreciate the depth your soul, wisdom of your brain and sincerity of your passion to music. Please ignore those - they are definitely in minority and don't deserve to be noticed...

    Normally I prefer the 9th with Finale (especially the SPCM or the Schaller completion), but for this performance and this style of conducting, I like how it's combined with the Lontano attacca. Both works evoke for me cosmic and transcendental feelings, and both the Adagio and the Lontano seem to convey a sense of 'departure' (the Adagio with its famous 'Farewell to Life', and Lontano, the word itself literally translating to ‘far away’ or ‘distant'). The Lontano seems to carry that departure forward from the Earth into another, perhaps alien, dimension. (Recall the final scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.) Bruckner and Ligeti pair well together, given the right mood.

    Nur bei der Bruckner 9 weigern sich die meisten immer noch das Finale zu spielen.

    I liked Bruckner's music in this performance, but I am a bit confused. By now, we pretty much know how Bruckner wanted to end his last symphony. Why is it a good idea to play another composer's music right after the third movement without a break?

      In a way, I agree with you. Bruckner himself, apparently, had insisted that the symphony be concluded by a Finale, culminating in a grand hymn of praise. I think it is more in keeping with Bruckner's vision to end with a Finale. So I regard this performance more as a curiosity or a "special performance", with a lot of artistic licence, rather than as a legitimate performance.

    • @hansihinterseher9156
      @hansihinterseher9156 4 года назад

      Bruckner wanted his "Te Deum" to be played instead of the Finale. Most musicians "don't like that" (I will never understand why) and just ignore his will. There is an awesome reconstructed Finale (SMPC) that I love very much - but performances can hardly be found (never could hear it live unfortunately).
      It's just sad and a very unsatisfactory situation for true admirers of Bruckner's art.
      Nevertheless this is a really great performance of the first three movements of course!

    The detail of the response reflects the gravity of that commented upon.
    The critique of a conductor may be focussed upon
    - choice of music presented, to the extent that such choice resides with the conductor,
    - interpretation, within the constraint of the orchestra conducted, of the music presented, and
    - visual projection of the conductor, in as far as it contributes to, or subtracts from, the internalisation of the
    music presented.
    Regarding the interpretation of Anton Bruckner's unfinished 9th Symphony by the SWR Symphony Orchestra under Teodor Currentzis :
    - Regardless of its possible affinity with the music of Anton Bruckner, the Lontano of György Ligati, as final
    movement, contradicts the musical intentions of the composer, clearly documented in manuscripts that are
    nearer to completion than those, utilised to complete final compositions of many other composers.
    - The SWR Symphony Orchestra has evolved as one of the leading orchestras of Germany, and by implication,
    of the world. Its interpretation, under Christoph Eschenbach, of the 7th Symphony of Anton Bruckner, and,
    under other conductors, of many romantic, and classical, works shows an ability of projecting profound
    musicality.
    Yet, as compared with interpretations of renown conductors, such as Claudio Obbado, Leonard Bernstein, and Herbert von Karajan

    • @gotzpahl6302
      @gotzpahl6302 6 лет назад +1

      Continuation
      .... although technically beyond reasonable critique, is devoid of the sublety, and fluidity, of nuances of sound,
      and phrasing, integrated into a transcendental whole, that characterises this final, and summary symphonic
      composition of Anton Bruckner.
      We are made to witness the spiritual death of the composer,
      - and left with the ashes of showmanship manifested in superfluous gesticulation and mimicry by a self-
      aggrandizing conductor.
      Individually one may have different opinions regarding these issues.
      Collectively it is made economically possible that Teodor Currentzis can express his musical individuality.
      Is it in the collective interest that Teodor Currentzis be given this opportunity?

    The 'fourth movement' is so wrong, we largely have much of what Bruckner really wrote. It couldn't be more different than this. The real last movement is one of Bruckner's great achievements, but has no century of history of performance - the reconstruction only has the coda as a problem, it is mostly there. Mozart's Requiem had more post-work required, Bruckner's last movement as lot less. Just play it!

      Hampelmann - schwacher, willenloser Mensch der leicht zu lenken und zu beeinflussen ist (DUDEN). Teodor Currentzis zeigt grosses Geschick um seine gewollte Interpretation zu realisieren und Zuhoerer damit zu begeistern.
      Populismus ist die große Gefahr in der Klassischen Musik. Das, von dem Dirigenten, populistisch Gewollte ist nicht unbedingt das, von dem Komponisten, musikalisch Beabsichtigte.
      Anton Bruckner, und das SWR Symphonie Orchester, verdienen größeren Respekt.

      Dass Populismus, nicht nur in der Klassischen Musik, die derzeit größte Gefahr für unsere Kultur darstellt - da bin ich ganz auf Ihrer Seite, und mein Beitrag war auch keinesfalls populistisch oder polemisch gemeint. Alleine, diese windmühlenartigen Bewegungen mögen ja auf das Publikum gut wirken, sind allerdings nicht wirklich zielführend (als Musiker, der unter allen großen Dirigenten gespielt hat, weiß ich, wovon ich rede) - auch das ist Populismus - es schaut gut aus, zerstört aber jede Linie, was sich gerade bei Bruckner fatal auswirkt. P.s.: Der von mir benutzte Begriff "Hampelmann" bezog sich notabene nicht auf den Charakter des Herrn Currentzis, willenlos ist er sicherlich nicht!, sondern alleine auf seine Bewegungen ...

    Understanding of music is enhanced by knowledge of its historical context.
    The nine symphonies of Anton Bruckner have undergone many revisions, some of which can not be authenticated as being by Bruckner's hand. The last symphony was unfinished after almost ten years of composition.
    The first performance of the 9th symphony, under Ferdinand Loewe, was based upon a score, largely amended by the conductor.
    During the 20th century a tradition evolved as to the score and its interpretation, attempting to reflect, to the extent possible, the original Intentions of the composer.
    More recently there is a tendency towards showmanship in the form of pantomine and minimalistic ballet in conducting, and selfrealisation, as composer, in intepretation.
    The extent of this tendency varies as to individual conductor.
    The appreciation of Bruckner's genius merits restraint in the conductor as regards personal visual and musical projection, allowing the music to come into its own.

    • @gotzpahl6302
      @gotzpahl6302 6 лет назад

      PS.
      Anton Bruckner was a very devout and humble person, by most accounts celibate, although very much attracted to the fairer sex. He was a church organist and musical pedagogue. His music is of extreme introspection, a communication with his God, to whom, it is said, he dedicated this symphony.
      There exists much material, in Bruckner's hand, for a final movement to his 9th symphony. None approximates, in any meaningful way, Ligati's Lontano.
      Adding Ligati's Lontano as a final movement to Bruckner's 9th symphony constitutes an act of irreverence to both Bruckner and Ligati, making a statement that is highly personal of the conductor.
      Bruckner, in his own words, wanted to finish his last symphony with references to his previous symphonic works.

    • @gotzpahl6302
      @gotzpahl6302 6 лет назад

      PPS.
      It may be enlightening to visually, and musically, compare the interpretation of Bruckner's 7th symphony by the SWR Symphony Orchestra, under Christoph Eschenbach, with that, by the same orchestra, under Teodor Currentzis, of Bruckner's 9th symphony, augmented with Ligati's Lontano as a final movement.

    • @ThreadBomb
      @ThreadBomb 5 лет назад

      Actually, Bruckner had pretty much finished the finale of his 9th. Unfortunately his "friends" handed out pages of the manuscript as souvenirs after his death. A large number of these have been located, and several (mostly convincing) completions have been recorded. Possibly the most convincing version remains the one recorded by Wildner.

    Und was muss er die ganze Zeit in die Partitur sehen? Kennt er die Partitur nicht gut genug? Ich kann diesem Dirigenten überhaupt nichts abgewinnen (ich habe schon einige andere Videos von ihm gesehen und jedes Mal nach einiger Zeit abgeschaltet, weil es mir überhaupt nicht gefallen hat)
    Mir kommt es so vor, als wollte der Herr Currentzis permanent allen zeigen, wie das Stück zu spielen sei, um sich selbst zu profilieren und zu inszenieren. Statt die Musiker einfach frei spielen zu lassen (zumindest im Konzert sollte das der Fall sein). Mir fehlt auch die Ehrfurcht und der Respekt dem Komponisten gegenüber.
