Rye Level Crossing (Ferry Road Crossing)

  • Two Class 171s in Southern livery cross the Ferry Road crossing in Rye, heading into Rye Station and to Winchelsea respectively, the former then going to Appledore. Two more trains then repeat this the second time, creating two long closures together. The points change between each train crossing and the Winchelsea bound trains sound their horns for the Tillingham Bridge foot crossings by the local windmill, where a man died a couple of months before. This crossing has no alarms themselves, but instead it has alarms in the nearside barrier boxes. They produce strange alarms. The crossing's lights cannot be seen at all from the one-way system side, as there is a building and a signpost blocking both. If a car was travelling too fast along this relatively straight piece of road, then they would not see the lights and have to brake sharply, possibly crashing into a barrier. There was a great controversy over this crossing when a large supermarket was proposed in the area next to it. It was suggested that a large pavement was to be put in across the track. This and its counterpart The Grove crossing are the only ones left on this line still with halogens for lights. This crossing is right at the end of the B-road I live on. Yay B2089.

Those lights don't look as if they have been there for long, it seems to say Unipart Rail on the label instead of National Railway Supplies. I looked at this crossing in Google maps between May 2011 and June 2015. In may 2011 they looked really old but in 2015 they seem to have changed them to new halogens.
