  • When you hunt for long enough, sometimes less than ideal things happen and it's our job as hunters to put all our effort into recovering the animal. This hunt was a perfect example of persevering when things are tough mentally and emotionally. At the end of the day, we hunt for the meat. We are thankful that we could recover this buck and thankful for people like Lindsay who come and bring closure to hundreds of hunters by helping them recover their animals.

I’m an older Maine hunter. Don’t listen to the noise on RUclips. It can be tough to know as hunter you didn’t make the shot you wanted. You practice one shot one kill. You want to be clean and humane. To respect the deer is to take part in the harvest of them every year because if we didn’t go out and hunt them they would suffer because of overpopulation. Well done young man. Your blessed to have the time you did with your father. He’s proud.

Congrats on a very nice buck Dan. Two things I want to mention here. I’m 61 years old, and one thing I’ve learned in 50 years of hunting is it is next to impossible to always make the perfect shot. There will be branch deflections, sudden lay of the land changes, or just plain old buck fever. All you can do is try your hardest to put your shot into the vitals and hope for the best. Furthermore, your emotions are your own, and never let anyone tell you how you should react when killing a deer. I shot the biggest buck of my life on November 5th, in 2012. It field dressed at 241lbs. My only son and his best friend helped me drag out my buck. 17 days later on November 22, my son was killed in a car accident. He was just 23 years old….💔Gone 10 years as of tomorrow. I’m sorry for the loss of your dad.

Thank you Mike! It is nice to speak with someone who really understands what goes on out there and who has gone through something similar to you. I appreciate your comment and I am so very sorry for the loss of your son. The anniversaries and birthdays are the hardest of all.

Hard to believe their will to live, I mean to put one in the boiler room and have him keep going like that is amazing. Something about those northeastern deer they seem ultra tough. I follow lot of guys that track them and without fail it takes multiple shots to bring them down. I appreciate that you went to the length to get that buck! As hunters we have to express respect for them! It’s what makes a true hunter/ conservationist! Congrats on a well earned deer. I hate to see any animal suffer! You always want a quick clean kill, but it doesn’t always work out that way! God bless young man!

Nice Buck Dan. Never apologize for being emotional, it's who you are. Unfortunately, marginal hits happen, and anyone who hasn't had one, hasn't hunted much. It's what you do afterwards that makes the difference, and you did everything right and recovered your deer.

Great buck, congrats! Way to stick with it and call in Lindsay and Aldo. Smart move, glad you were able to recover him. As hunters, we understand that we can’t always make the perfect shot, but we never want to see a deer suffer. We have so much respect for these animals and you showed that. This was an example of the best possible outcome given the circumstances. Well done, nothing to be ashamed of!

You don't need to apologize for the emotional feelings you have when harvesting a wild animal. They have the will to live and they're equipped to survive in the harshest of conditions. I always stop and give thanks to God for the opportunity to match wits with one of the smartest animals He's created and to enjoy the natural environment we share with them.

People don't understand how tough these animals are,, they have no sense of mortality, they don't know what death is or that they are mortally wounded. The Deer just knows its hurt and needs to get away from whatever is chasing them. I too have been in this situation, it just sucks,, Period.. There is no sugar coating it. If you hunt long enough, this will happen. The best you can do is stick to it and do the best you can to bring the animal to rest. I'm pleased to see you had the fortitude to follow up and finish what you started. Good ethics Son.. ~Best

Being in the woods in God's country thinking back on hunts of year's past with friends/family members who are no longer with us is EXACTLY WHAT DEER HUNTING IS ALL ABOUT! This past Fall was my first season without my Uncle, the man who taught me everything I know about the outdoors. It was definitely a tough one without him, but I know he was right there with me in the woods, just like he was 30 years ago when he first took me deer hunting for the first time. Great buck and congrats!

Not the best but it happens. At least you were able to recover it. I’m 78 and have had a few not so great shots. It’s always so emotional for me also. We always strive for a clean quick kill but it doesn’t always happen that way. The main thing it was found and not wasted. Nice buck.

I too am an old Maine hunter. I know what it feels like to lose a father
And loved to hunt together. It’s always tough when you score. Brings back the memories and that you miss your dad. Anyone gives you beef over that then so be it. Doesn’t change the fact of the relationship you shared with him. Some people are just straight up ignorant. That’s not your fault. They will come around eventually. Good job my man. Now it’s time to enjoy the family. The hunt is over. Til next year

Great deer Dan I get emotional when I take an animals life as do many other guys that I know and watch as others have said it’s because of empathy and respect. It’s possible the people who don’t get that haven’t taken an animals life before or maybe they just deal with it differently. Just like some of us deal with loss different than others we’re all individuals.

My great uncle raised me to hunt and fish I helped him with alot of deer over the years and also a moose at the age of 78. The last deer he shot was an 8pt 180lbs my uncle passed last December just b4 Christmas. I was given his old buck knife that he used on that 8pt. So this year I took it with me as a good luck charm and low and behold I wasn't in the 30 mins b4 I had an 8pt 182.8lbs come in hot to rattle and grunts. I ended up processing the entire deer from start to finish with that same knife. And now the ol boy sits on my wall with that knife hooked onto the antlers

Nice one. You can see the branch get cut off by the bullet on the replay. The bullet must lose alot of energy doing that. Pretty cool what a tracking dog can do. Good advice to keep bumping him at night to keep that blood flowing. The deer might of gotten away otherwise.
